Decker Signs

July 27th, 2010 - 11:10am by Gabe Hiatt

Eric Decker

The new No. 87 is officially a Denver Bronco. Rookie Eric Decker signed with the team on Tuesday, so he’ll report for the first day of camp for rookies and early reporting veterans on Wednesday.

In addition the team waived linebacker Bruce Davis and offensive lineman Chris Marinelli.

Decker, a former University of Minnesota star, has been gearing up for training camp by slowly building his workload on an injured foot that kept him out of minicamp. The foot felt good enough for him to fully participate in Larry Fitzgerald’s receivers camp held at Decker’s alma mater.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound wideout is certainly comfortable on the Golden Gophers’ turf. Decker set Minnesota records with 227 receptions for 3,119 receiving yards. In three seasons as a collegiate starter he hauled in 24 touchdown catches and totaled 11 career 100-yard receiving games.

A sure-handed target, Decker only dropped three passes in the 354 times he was targeted — less than one percent of the time. He also threw two touchdowns on four passing attempts over his career.

Reminiscent of John Elway, Decker was an exceptional athlete on the baseball diamond as well. The Milwaukee Brewers and the Minnesota Twins tried to draft Decker as an outfielder in 2008 and 2009 respectively.

Now Decker can pursue football in training camp as he tries to win a coveted spot in the wide-open receiving corps. Past fan favorite Ed McCaffrey presented Decker with a signed No. 87 jersey, passing on the legacy of the number to the young wideout.

Sweet! im excited about this guy in our offense! GO BRONCOS!!!

  2. Shelflyfe says:

Stoked. He has a lot of potential and appears to fit the McD personality scheme well. Do you think this means we are closer to either letting Stokley go or trimming some of the other wr’s?

  3. brian_schneider says:

I think its a little early to start putting our eggs in one basket. Stokes is getting up there in age but he’s still got great hands. Decker does have a track record of injuries so I don’t know if we can start trimming some of the other WRs just yet. Obvioulsy we will to trim down to our 53 man roster, but I don’t think we can start counting anyone of our WR out just yet. Although I do like what I’ve seen from Decker in college. If indeed he truely doesn’t have anymore injuries I could see Stokes being un-signed when his contract is up. If anything Decker can definitely learn a thing or twelve from Stokes.

  7. 07elway says:

One by one they are all getting signed… training camp is almost here, I can barely contain my excitement!!

I hope for the sake of the team he can be the player we need him to be and that he stays away from the injury bug – we do not need anymore of that. And I hope for the sake of the number he is wearing, he will be able to do it justice. I have no doubts, this team we’ll have this year is going to be fierce. Have I mentioned I’m excited?? lol Go get ‘em boys!!

    Keep the faith Bronco Country…
    GO BRONCOS in 2010!!!!!

  12. mpeevler says:

I really like what I’ve seen from our rookies when they were in college. Granted we have Tebow, but I’m excited to see how well they perform at this level. If we can sign the rest we are going to be golden.

    Broncos 2010-Dallas Bound!

  13. baylinorcrush says:

weareamr (or mini-me), funny. Actually I didn’t bother since it was yesterday’s news on the blog, hence the satirical deja vu experience, I think if everything goes according to plan TODAY will be Beadles day, YESTERDAY was Decker’s day, it’s just that headline wise we are like off a day on this website, crazy bloggers like I have learned long ago to move at our own pace to keep up with the time. Of course if Beadles signs this afternoon, tomorrow will be his day on this site… It’s like the twilight zone, a dead time in space, a black hole, well you get my drift, not real fast on news over here, LOL.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

broncos_ed, Brian is a well educated man who is not going to talk out of his rear end here, if he said Decker has a history of being hurt, it’s because on the last two years of his college career he missed games for injuries. In 2008, he had an ankle injury against Northwestern, could barely play at all the next game and had to sit out the game after that and returned for the final game of the season. In October of 2009, he tore up ligaments in his left foot which ended his season and college career. Therefore I believe it is totally justified to be concerned over Decker’s injuries, specially that they both appeared in the foot/ankle areas, some people have weaker ankles than others, like I, I could never play basketball because I would always roll my ankles, but I have knees built like rocks, so when I strapped on snow ski boots, I could ski out of my mind. All this to say I share the concern and don’t find it funny like you do, even so I will give you that Stockley has found it hard to get onto the field the last couple of season. That being said I think we all know the end is near for Stockley, but he is too nice a guy to just let go without at least giving him a shot at it. I for one will not be surprised if he doesn’t make the last cut, rather I will be if he does, too much competition at the position.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, the meanest NFL player on the planet died today, Jack Tatum will be delivering neck breaking head tackles somewhere else now. Never liked how the guy played, and his death doesn’t change that one bit, no disrespect, the guy’s only aim in the game was to put your lights out, literally, ask Stingley. Personally, he is more responsible for my hatred of the Raiders than any other players, but only old guys experienced that, you young guys are lucky not to see stuff like that anymore with all the new rules, it was heart wrenching to watch, except for the darn Raider fans, Romanoski was an angel in comparaison. I guess I had to give the man my proper send off, RIP.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

Actually you can’t ask Darryl Stingley because he died at age 55 in 2007, after being put in a wheel chair for the rest of his life following a Tatum hit, which I remember today just as the day I watched it live decades ago, Stingley lying there for ever without motion, you knew Tatum had gotten just what he wanted, he didn’t hit you to make a play, he hit you only to hurt you, a mean SOB, ok I’m done.

  17. Samoanbronco says:

Gaffney, Thomas, Royal, Stokely, Decker, Lloyd & McKinley (ST) are my picks… Willis on the fringe

  18. BIGGEST BRONCO says:

SO ROOKIE TRAINING CAMP IS 2MORROW??? IM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS SEASON !!! IM GLAD DECKER SIGNED. HE’S PRETTY GOOD FROM THE HIGHLIGHTS I WATCHED ON YOU TUBE. AND HE’S TALL. LETS HOPE HE KEEPS HEALTHY AND EVERYONE ELSE WE PICKED UP FROM DRAFT SIGN TOO.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

Same here, but Willis in, he did great stuff in OTA’S and opened a lot of eyes, and Stockley out.

  20. pdp1408 says:

I’m not so sure we’re gonna have 7 WR’s on the roster. One might not make it.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, it could go to 6, that would be a tough choice for me between McKinley and Willis.

  22. Bones1965 says:

Ask Riley Odoms how tough Jack Tatum was. I really want to see some of the old players brought back for Training camp as mentors or teachers.

    Bring in McCaffrey
    Bring in Atwater
    Bring in Alfred Williams
    Bring back TD
    Bring Back Zim
    Bring Back Sharpe
    Bring Back Tommy Jackson

I am not talking as players I am talking about lending experience to
the younger players and vets. 1. It will give these players the sense of Denver Broncos tradition. 2. Maybe some pointers can help with a given technique.

  23. baylinorcrush says:

T.O. is a Bengal, signed and delivered, thank god for McD, no divas allowed in town, although is has behaved much better of late, i.e. in Buffalo.

  24. royalbroncofan1 says:

Great to see a new WR wear #87 again. There was another WR, who wore the #87 a few years ago… David Kircus.

Didn’t know Decker also played baseball. Great to read. Looking forward to seeing all our rookies signed soon.

Jack Tatum, dead at 61… “The Assasin”. Apparently Tatum had diabetes and suffered a heart attack.

  25. royalbroncofan1 says:

Can’t imagine Ocho Cinco and T.O on the same Team…. Crazy!

  26. broncaholic74 says:

Great job getting decker signed, hope he can make a big impact like royal did his first year. Also RIP Jack Tatum even though he was a raider he will be missed.

  27. KnowshonForSure says:

    beadles signed

  28. baylinorcrush says:

Thanks KFS, been waiting all day for this one, here is Klis’ take on some of the details:

The Broncos are signing their way down the draft-pick list, putting under contract second-round pick Zane Beadles tonight with a four-year deal.

Beadles, the 45th overall pick in the NFL draft, is Denver’s highest selection signed for this season. First-rounders Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow were drafted higher and remain unsigned — the Broncos’ only draft picks still without contracts.

A left tackle his final two seasons at the University of Utah, Beadles finished the Broncos’ offseason minicamp as the starting left guard on the team’s depth chart.

Beadles’ four-year deal is expected to be worth around $4 million with his guarantee approaching $2.4 million.

From what Klis says it’s not in the books yet, but good as done, will be finalized tonight. Two to go…

  29. baylinorcrush says:

Adam Schefter doesn’t even have it on his twitter page, it must not be finalized quite yet, a matter of turning it into the league I guess.

  30. 1nOnlyTRB says:

If it wasnt for Royals slow year last year, He would be the Starting reciever Ez. I still think He can be. Sure it was a diff coach, diff offense, and better QB but his rookie season was no fluke. Kid is amazing. If Desean Jackson can do it, Royal at 5’10 as well can be the main guy.

Glad to see Decker signed. I will like to see, Royal – 1, Thomas – 2, Gaf – 3, Decker 4 (altho I think he would make a GREAT receiving TE), Stokely 5, McKinley 6. In about 3 years, If Thomas isnt instantly what we think, we will have to make gaff 2 and Thomas 3, but Royal definitely 1. This is the year of his Resurgence. Its all on McD, cuz we know what Royal can do, he aint changed, only thing that changed is the offense, the coach and they playbook….SO FIX IT lol. TRB out…

  31. 1nOnlyTRB says:

**Ignore the “in about 3 years” that was part of a sentence I deleted….

  32. royalbroncofan1 says:

Klis also has this to add about Zane Beadles in his article:

    Zane Beadles
    Guard, offensive tackle
    Height: 6-4
    Weight: 305
    College: Utah
    Drafted: Second round, 45th overall
FYI: Four-year starter who played in 51 games for the Utes. Started 12 games at left guard and 38 at left tackle. Intelligent player — he has a degree in mechanical engineering — who makes few mistakes.
Outlook: Received a look at tackle in offseason workouts but likely will be a guard in Denver’s offense over the long haul.

    Welcome to the NFL Beadles!!

  33. caramelloo says:

What’s up my Broncos Family! Our season is getting closer and closer! I agree with Bones in that we need to bring some of those Old School Vets back in. I would love to see the former Georgia Bulldog T.D. working with another former Bulldog in Moreno.

I tell ya what, this team is slowly shaping up to look like that 1997-98 team.

    Tebow – Elway
    Moreno – T.D.
    Thomas – Rod Smith
    Decker – Mccaffrey
    Dawkins – Atwater
    Etc, etc,

We are looking at a Team and that’s something we hadn’t seen in a very long time!

  34. baylinorcrush says:

    It’s official now, Beadles signed.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

Caramelloo, I’d have to agree with you, this is a team that is starting to look like it has a lot of potential, unfortunately the hang up is the Elway-Tebow reference, so as far as I’m concerned we will have to wait at least until next year to see it all unfold, and for this year show a lot of patience… once again…

  36. caramelloo says:

Oh I agree baylin! I mostly was trying to say that all those guys I named are similar to those vets and could one day be the new version of those old vets. I’m with you that all of us just have to be calm and give all of our support 100%. I know it’s all gonna be worth the wait and I just look forward to our team coming full circle to a TEAM.

This squad is a Work In Progress and now we have players who are willing to put in the work. Let’s go Broncos!!

    Bronco Bucking All Day-Every Day

  37. baylinorcrush says:

I’ve been at it over 35 years, so I have no problem being patient, it’s like life, there is the highs and the lows with many dead spots in between, I do think we are going into the right direction and are starting to build something worthy once again, not without pain though, patience is what McD has been preaching and I can see why if he wants to have his shot at it long enough, Bowlen needs to buy into it, at least through McD’s current contract which is through 2012.

  38. IWILLX2 says:

McDaniels is building a wonderful, strong, football loving, team first group of players that are going to be the team to beat for several years. the group of players McDaniels are putting together on this team are going to be considered a Dynasty when it is all over and done with. I truly believe in what McDaniels is developing and I do believe that we are going to win several Super Bowls in years to come. I know it might take a little time for all the players to fully grasp the scheme but when they do….Watch out N.F.L. Orton,Mareno,Royal are going to have the best season of their careers. Another year in the system will prove to be rewarding. Watch out for the BRONCOS ! IWILLX2
