Day 7: A.M. Blog

August 6th, 2009 - 1:38pm by Kyle Sonneman

In preparation for tonight’s practice at INVESCO Field at Mile High, the Broncos held a light workout Thursday morning. Most players wore just their jerseys and shorts while the rookies and some selected veteran wore padded pants and their jerseys.

ROLL CALL: The only players not on field this morning were Rulon Davis, Brian Dawkins and Brandon Marshall. Nic Clemons returned to the field sporting an orange jersey.

POSITIONING: With Dawkins out, David Bruton took the majority of first team reps. The rest of the offense and defense stayed pretty much the same as previous days.

DRILLS: Much of the session was dedicated to situation drills including — 4th-and-goal with no timeouts at the 10-yard line, 2-point conversations, Hail Mary defense and offense, a kick return period and a fake field goal protection session.

  • For the final period of practice, rookies and 11 veterans slipped on their shoulder pads and went through an 11-on-11 session. The remaining veterans watched their teammates battle it out from the sidelines.
  • PLAYMAKERS: Spencer Larsen took full advantage of the final period as he was involved in nearly every tackle when the offense ran the football. His play drew praise from coaches and teammates.

  • Rashod Moulton leaped to break up a Tom Brandstater pass intended for Nate Swift.
  • QUICK HITS: Chuck Priefer, the father of special teams coordinator Mike Priefer joined his son at practice today. The elder Priefer worked in the NFL for 17 seasons and coached at the collegiate level for 12 years. Chuck retired in 2007 after spending 10 seasons as the Detroit Lions special teams coach.

  • A protein shake laid empty and defeated at the feet of Ed Hochuli during the walk-through portion of practice.
  • DAILY JUKEBOX: Only one song played during warmups today, but the title could define training camp for most players.

  • Queen and David Bowie – “Under Pressure”
  • QUOTABLE:
“We’ll get a comfort level, obviously — that’s where we play when it really matters. So we’ll get out there one time before it really counts and have some fun in front of the fans.”
-Kyle Orton, on the benefits of tonight’s open practice at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

    Pictures below

You’re doing a great job with this year’s camp.

    2. Torain ATV fan says:

what i really wish for was for the broncos to put up a tv and show them live during the the scrimmage. i understand why they dont do this, other teams would see how we progressing. but it would be cool.

    3. broncos504 says:

knowshon and the broncos need to agree on a deal quickly

    4. DDynasty37 says:

Maybe not so much trying to hide it since its open but getting a network to provide air time may difficult for a pre season scrimmage.

But I agree I would love to be able to see this(impossible being all the way in maryland). Should be interesting to see who McDaniels puts on the first team and what not. DEPTH CHART ON MONDAY.

does anyone how many players have to get cut for the first set of cuts? Also when that is?

    5. 07elway says:

Thanks for the updates. You guys have really done a thorough job with updates, very much appreciated.

    6. Torain ATV fan says:

      hey princess.

Dynasty, i was thinking more like a link on this site, the way they do for the interviews of the head coaches or players.

    7. Torain ATV fan says:

      Hey Kyle,
thanks for all the info, can not get enough of it. Thank Gray and everyone for me man.

    8. DDynasty37 says:

ahhh, gotcha….ya that would be pretty sweet if they could stream the scrimmage live on here your right.

either way, it’ll be good to hear all the details once its done!

    9. Torain ATV fan says:

      true

    10. Torain ATV fan says:

For all you Cutler fans, read this. Says the mile high is like a 6 and the windy city is a 9.

What’s up ATV? Sorry about the drama on the other site, I had no idea what happened till I woke up yesterday. We’ve put it all behind us but they all know if it happens again, I’ll leave. Hope you decide to come back. I think they know if I leave, the whole site will get shut down. Just wanted you to know that.

    13. Torain ATV fan says:

thanks princess, i actuallu put up a link for you guys this morning. dont remember waht it was 4 though. lol.

    14. Atwater4Hof says:

Hey everyone. So I’ve been following the blogs pretty regularly and I’m a little disapointed to hear that Barrett hasn’t been receiving any first team reps. Even when Hill and Dawkins were out McBath and Bruton replaced them. I really like Barrett and feel like he is being overlooked.

Also, look at Larsen in that picture… we need to find a way to have him on the field. Absolute stud.

My opinion… our linebackers should be DJ, Larsen, Woodyard, and Andre Davis and keep Ayers on the Dline.

    15. Torain ATV fan says:

      all 4 are inside linebackers

    16. Torain ATV fan says:

      i think

    17. Torain ATV fan says:

I also like Barrett. I will tell u this though, i dont think Coach McDmisses anything. If Barrett stands out, he will be seen. Read somewhere he even played LB on some occasions.

    18. Torain ATV fan says:

suppose to be a space after McD

    19. LBWilson56 says:

Man..That Larsen is a stud like Woodyard and i think he would better help us on defense than offense. The only problem:With the other more experienced linebackers out there, where the heck do u put him?Lol..But..its a nice problem to have thats for sure…
      STAY POSITIVE PEOPLE!!

    20. cutlersucks8 says:

Great job guys, did you hear about that loser cutler apparently he thinks Chicago is a better football town than denver, what a jerk Go broncos, go Mcdaniels

    21. 07elway says:

LOL ATV… I remember what the link was for. Now its all over the internet. Crabtree really is gonna be a baby and re-enter the draft. Just wrote Dave an email and told him that is someone who only wants to play for the money. Those kind of people and players just make me sick. They could care less about the love of the game or anyone else… all they want is a big fat paycheck. All they care about is themselves. And he messes up everything else for other players… gee now that sounds familiar… oh yeah Moreno!! Good gravy. I don’t know if I’ll be able to sleep at night with this gnawing at my brain. Alright, I’ve vented my frustration enough. No need for me to get hostile. haha

Oh and just wanted to say I won’t be around for awhile. I shall miss you all but I’ll be having fun a some training camp practices!! haha Will be gone for about a week. Don’t have too much fun without me on here! lol

      With faith…
      GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

    22. Torain ATV fan says:

yeah they link is above on a higher posts

    23. cutlersucks8 says:

What’s the latest on Knowshon apparently a deal should have been done by the morning

    24. Torain ATV fan says:

he reminds me more of Marshall, just cares about money and not their teammates. Moreno i dont blame, all 4 picks before him have not signed.

    25. Torain ATV fan says:

      i was talking about crabtree

    26. memphisboy says:

Does anyone else think the pics are poorly taken and out of focus sometimes? The pics leave much to be desired from the photographers that they’ve hired. I’m just mad I can’t be there for the Invesco Field practice… :P

    27. memphisboy says:

      That wasn’t the face I was going for… :(

    28. Marshallman-15 says:

marshall doesnt threaten to retire or be “re-drafted”. you’d think if he cared as much as crabtree he’d find a loophole. and crabtree wants twenty-five million, and marshall wants like three million. i dont like to compare things like that (especially when it has to do with a bronco lol).

    29. Torain ATV fan says:

i doubt marshall wants 3 million, and now he just threatens to sit out. 3 million, HAHAHA.

    30. Torain ATV fan says:

im glad we dont need him.

    31. Torain ATV fan says:

i rather trade him for a DL stud

    32. Torain ATV fan says:

Marshall only here so he dont get fined, then he gets hurt (aha).

    33. Torain ATV fan says:

      Take off the blinders dude.

    34. Torain ATV fan says:

and he can still get suspended, hope he doesnt, but he still can.

    35. Torain ATV fan says:

and marshall is not a bronco (in his heart)

    36. Torain ATV fan says:

      just on paper

    37. Marshallman-15 says:

id rather have marshall than a pretty good DLman and have eddie royal be starter. he’s good enough, but i think we’re gonna want a good recieving core if orton isnt as good as we hope, ya know?

    38. Torain ATV fan says:

we will be fine with gafney, and mckinley as are 2 and 3 with eddie 1. u see thats how its going to be. Brandon will milk his injuries all year.

    39. Torain ATV fan says:

time will tell if he changes for his teammates.

    40. Torain ATV fan says:

      i hope he does change.

    41. TheRoyalBeast says:

Short of the best DL in the league, Id rather keep Marshall.(big surprise)lol but I think he is too valuable at WR to ignore. When those WR reach his level or close this season then we can talk, for now they are just shots i nthe dark that look “promising”. Dont get me wrong im an optimistic guy. Have had Hope for WR from lilie to darius watts. Guess I am partial to WR cuz that would be my position if i had played college ball and I enjoy it alot. Even McD is already saying tha Jabar is just a good guy to have if someone goes down. Thats how I feel, At least Marshall got enough love for the game to show up and practice with NFL Greats like fitz and rice in the offseason. Definitely better and more proven than Roddy White who isnt even showing up and Wants larry fitz money? HA!!. Brandon wants something more like Jennings money which I believe he desersves

Without Moreno in training camp, I had been suffering from Moreno withdrawal so I had no option but to look at some of his highlights…..All I can say is we gotta get that guy in here lol. Hopefully that post is right ATV and he is the next by tonight.

      GO BRONCOS!!!

    42. Atwater4Hof says:

ATV…. Woodyard is definitely outside and DJ has played both in his career, with more success on the outside allowing him to use his speed. But I don’t know, everything I’ve read has Barrett doing some positive things and I’d just rather see him get the reps before Burton and McBath.

    43. Torain ATV fan says:

woodyard is inside Atwater for sure. and DJ has played outside, but will be inside. remmember its a 3-4 not 4-3.

    44. Torain ATV fan says:

i like barrett also, but i trust in the coaches decision.

    45. Torain ATV fan says:

      TRB,

i dont think they can duplicate marshall. dont misunderstand me. i just think royal can do what marshall did, and between gafney and mckinley maybe they can duplicate what royal did, and we will be fine. I guess i just wish the players we have, wanted to be here and showed up. The way Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey did. Maybe i am asking for too much. you see what im saying, i dont want someone here, if they dont want to be here. that brings down morale.

    46. Torain ATV fan says:

plus we still have stokely, scheffler and hillis for passes. plus our other RBs for passes.

    47. Torain ATV fan says:

damnm our team is loaded. like chris simms said, this is the best loaded team at skill positions that he has ever been on, and thats without marshall on the field. with him it increases, but i wish he would want to be here. instead of whining, because they havent traded him

    48. TheRoyalBeast says:

      ATV

I hear you man, guess i never really knew how rare rod and eds character was in the NFl. between money grubbing rookies and hold out especially at the WR position, got a new found appreciation for thembut yea we can “function” wihtout him just will be better with him but I hope everything goes well with his case next thursday and his hamstring injury.
