Day 4: P.M. Blog

August 3rd, 2009 - 8:49pm by Chris Gentilviso

After a shorter night session on Sunday, with some players in shorts minus pads, the full gear was back in action for Monday’s nightcap. Here’s a breakdown of the action.

ROLL CALL: After missing the morning session due to a coach’s decision, Correll Buckhalter, Brian Dawkins and Brandon Stokley were all back out on the field. Sitting out the p.m. session were Ryan Torain, Casey Wiegmann, and Daniel Graham. After leaving the morning practice due to injury, Nick Greisen did not practice this evening.

  • Although his signing was officially announced just prior to the start of the nightcap, rookie Robert Ayers did not practice, but Head Coach Josh McDaniels instead had the outside linebacker/defensive end complete a workout session.

“He’s a good coach — and he thought it would be best for me not to come out and, you know, make a bad first impression,” Ayers said. “So coach looked out for me and I’ll be out there tomorrow.”

POSITIONING: With Wiegmann not practicing, rookie Seth Olsen got a chance to work with the first-team linemen. Ben Hamilton slid over from left guard to center, with Olsen planting himself at left guard — a position he primarily played in college. Olsen made the most of the opportunity, drawing praise from offensive line coach Rick Dennison during a series of drills against the defensive line.

  • Rookies David Bruton and Alphonso Smith also spent time working with special teams coordinator Mike Priefer in field goal block formation. Priefer was putting their skills to the test as rushers on the weak side of Britton Colquitt and Matt Prater.
  • DRILLS: Priefer got things started, working with his unit on on-side kicks and kickoff returns. Back deep on the kicks were Eddie Royal, Smith and Kenny McKinley.

  • Secondary coach Ed Donatell had his unit working on man-to-man coverage, where one defensive back played receiver and another lined up at their normal post. The assignment for each player on defense was to bat the pass away. On one play, Joshua Bell just missed breaking up Kyle Orton’s throw, but Donatell told him “that could be the difference on that big third down.”
  • The defensive backs teamed up with the wide receivers and quarterbacks in 1-on-1′s. Tony Carter made the only pick of the session, stepping in to snag an Orton pass intended for Brandon Lloyd along the sideline.
  • Receivers coach Adam Gase also worked with his unit on goal line routes — specifically footwork along the back of the end zone to keep both feet in bounds. Royal and Jabar Gaffney both had a pair of touchdowns on that drill.
  • Offensive coordinator Mike McCoy had his quarterbacks work on poise in the pocket. With Lonie Paxton as the center, Orton, Chris Simms and Tom Brandstater all had to scan the field for open men before making the smart decision and dumping the ball off to a stationary Gaffney.
  • PLAYMAKERS: Despite missing the morning session, Dawkins didn’t miss a beat in a 1-on-1 coverage drill with the tight ends. On the first series, he lined up directly across from rookie Richard Quinn. Quinn began to run his route before Dawkins jammed him hard at the line of scrimmage, sending the 6-foot-4 rookie to the ground.

“Whew — man, I got my bell rung today a little bit,” Quinn said. “I didn’t expect some of that to come, but it’s part of the game so I’ve just got to get back up, dust myself off and go at it again.”

To Quinn’s credit, the hit didn’t keep him away from the rest of practice, as he was back on the field catching passes a few minutes later.

For video of the play, check back later for our Broncos TV feature highlighting all the day’s action.

  • But Dawkins wasn’t done. On his next run-through, he went up against Jeb Putzier, and swatted the Brandstater pass away without trouble. On his third chance, he picked off Brandstater. That ended a two-day stretch where Dawkins did sets of 10 push-ups to punish himself for not making interceptions.
  • Toward the end of practice, the team worked on its red zone offense and defense. Royal and Stokley both shined in that part of the session, using their agility and hands to weave through the defense for a series of scores.
  • McKinley also made a nice juke move on fellow rookie Darcel McBath, and was so excited that he chest bumped his teammate. Veteran Kenny Peterson responded, telling McKinley not to expect the middle to be open again.
  • Dawkins again made his presence felt, this time inside the 20-yard line when he forced a fumble by LaMont Jordan. Jordan thought he had the catch made out of the backfield, but the cagey 14-year veteran came in at the last second to rip the ball out.
  • QUICK HITS: Head Coach Josh McDaniels continued to stress situational football, closing out the practice with a bevy of downs designed to test his team for real game situations. On the first play, his offense lined up out of its own end zone, with Orton completing to Stokley on an out route toward the sideline. The next play brought in the punting unit, where Smith ran back the return. Before his team turned around, it was in a first-and-10 situation from the 20, running a two-minute drill.

That two-minute drill brought in some new threads, including players calling timeout and the presence of first down markers on the sideline.

DAILY JUKEBOX: With Peyton Hillis as the morning’s proverbial disc jockey, Peterson took over for the nightcap. The playlist featured:

  • TI’s “My Life, Your Entertainment,” featuring Usher
  • Master P’s “Bout It, Bout It”
  • Rick Ross’ “Mafia Music”
  • QUOTABLE: “I’m on DenverBroncos.com all day looking at what is going on. So, you know, it was stressful. But now I’m here and I’m happy to be here.”
-Robert Ayers on missing the start of training camp

The team will be back on the field for a single practice on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. MDT. More pictures from today’s session below.

seems Dawkins had a good day of practice.

    3. broncos504 says:

let go ayers let see how good u are and hope to see knowshon out there by thursday

    4. TheRoyalBeast says:

Enjoyed finally getting a chance to hear Nolan speak in an interview. Same goes for ayers. Glad his back. Got hopes for Brandstater but he doesnt seem to be meeting them quite yet but then again he is up agaisnt a formitable secondary and its only the begining. Glad to see Royal, Phonzy and McKinley onf KR/PR duty. They are the 3 I figured would be doing it. Royal has both NFL and College experience excelling at it and Phonzy is just fast lol.

    5. Dr.Chris24 says:

      pics look good

    6. 2champ4pickSIX says:

What is the point of “first comment” if you aren’t going to comment about the blog in the same post. To me that doesn’t count, although you were 2nd too with something to say that time. Not that I’m racing! LOL
Glad to hear Ayers got inked in now, can’t say I blame Crabtree for holding out a bit, he was top 5 talent just no 40 time for the old cook in the bay area!
Irritating how one player holds up the next 3-5 on that side of the ball. Moreno will get signed no worries guys, and he will come in and compete very well. He’ll be a starter but I wouldn’t be surprised to see Buck start atleast the first couple pre season games due to being here more.
Can’t wait for the season to start, no more working weekends for me so I’ll get to watch the games live every week!
Royal won’t be 1st on the depth chart returning punts and kicks, he is too valuable at WR to be put in that situation, just throwing him in there now to give some extra pointers and light some fire of competition! One thing for Phonzy or McKinley to say “hey I’m beating out another rookie at this” quite another to say I’m doing better than someone who held this position last year!
      Stay hungry my friends!

    7. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Pretty sure it was on the other blog, but interesting to see that Josh Barrett was in the “hybrid nickel defense” at LINEBACKER with Davis, Doom and Reid. Really putting some speed out there, I hope Barrett gets tutoredwell by Dawkins, he has so much potential!

    8. 07elway says:

You guys are the best at these updates… thank you!

Man, Dawkins looks hungry in that picture chasing down Goodman… haha too funny! Hopefully Moreno will get signed tomorrow, he needs to get to practice!!

      With faith…
      GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

    9. Horvil Tiki says:

The dawkin guy. he get you turned overs like crazy. he say is my rightful football guy. give me this football. It like he get mad when offence out there too long, it disrespect the dawkin. robert ayer guy that is so cool we sign this guy yes. This guy look like terminator out there guy. He gon mash some body up. He gon mash some body up I just know it guy. guy say he gon help with sack you quart back but he even better at ball up you corny run backs in back field.Who it gon be frist. where is the clady. I scared of the clady guy. He have hole year of pactice now. he look like ten year guy out there last year. the clady. the hammer hillis. it fun to watch offence too cause you know some body gon get blowed up run over out there when offence too.

    10. since 86 says:

Man, it looks like Mckinley is gonna have an xciting rookie year like Royal did! This offense is going to come together nicely.

      PUMP BLUE, BLEED ORANGE!

    11. ocrush4ever says:

Last comment (for now). Seriously though, what is the point of claiming “first comment?” Do they give out cookies for that? Do you get a gold star?

    12. since 86 says:

      Horvil, are you ok buddy?

    13. gary bronc says:

Nice to see Stokely out there staying consistent. He’s gonna be an even bigger piece in our offense this year. GO BRONC’S!!!!

    14. Dr.Chris24 says:

horvil, not trying to put you down or anything but I didn’t understand anything you said in that post.

The only reason I say first comment is because for some weird reason it makes some of you angry. I remember one time someone did it and eeerockski basically cussed them out. it was pretty funny. people throw the biggest deals over the smallest things.

    15. knowshon27 says:

Glad to see ayers signed hope knowshon gets signed soon.

    16. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Dawkins is a great asset to us. I love having him here. GO BRONCOS!!!

    17. 2champ4pickSIX says:

Doesn’t upset me there chris, I think its funny, in a nice way I was mocking that you make a comment just to say first comment rather than typing what you wanna say for fear of someone else getting in and posting before you post a real comment…..
Seems like a waste of time to irritate some people you’ve never met and don’t get to see the reaction on their faces. THAT’S THE BEST PART OF BUGGING SOMEONE! LOL

Anyway I think horvic is either:
      A. Fraud Bronco Fan trying to be funny
      B. Barely learning to type in English
      C. In elementery school and learning to type/spell
      D. Related to Farmer Fran from WATERBOY!
“Special Teams, go run laps with Farmer Fran!!!” (the kicker ahhh crap!….)

Dawkins is more than an asset though bradjames, HE IS A WEAPON! Anyone see the video highlights of him popping Quinn! I could not help but laugh, then rewind it!
Anyway time for bed, for me folks! Besides being pumped for the season to start, is anyone else excited about blogging and posting with Phonzy?! So many things to start looking forward to, just gonna take them as they come in order!
      Stay thirsty my friends!

    18. BroncoAussie says:

Man dawkins was on fire, I can’t wait to see Ayers out there tomorrow.

    19. LBWilson56 says:

Guys Guys…geeez the “first comment”thing is a joke, let it go..its no big deal..we got football to talk about instead!!How bout that Dawkins, huh?Man,its gonna be nice to see him play for real in a game, cant wait….As for Knowshon, well lets just hope at least by friday they get this thing ironed out and we can start seeing what he’ll bring to the table….
      STAY POSITIVE PEOPLE!!!!!

    20. Dynamicdave says:

Doc, leave Horvil alone. I asked him to pop in from DP to say hello to the bloggers. His style is always funny to read and he offers his input of the article in a great offbeat way. Plus he’s a die-hard Broncos fan, so how can he go wrong….

LBWilson56, up late, I see? Same here. Had a migraine earlier but I slept for a few and it went away.

It’s game time in two weeks. Let it begin, already.

    21. Dynamicdave says:

Can’t wait to see Dawkins lay the wood on opposing offenses. Bring the pain.

Moreno will be signed soon. I have faith. Anything else we have is just about as useless.

    22. cutler6101 says:

What’s up everyone…good morning! horvil I had to read your post 3 times…but I see what you was saying….you write like my brother in law and he is just learning English. I heard this morning that we signed Moreno so after I finish this I am going to find out for sure! for those who had the opportunity to go to the practices: How does Orton look? Seems to me we have the best oline, rb depth and wr depth in the NFL….we just need a really good QB! Don’t get me wrong I am glad cutler is gone but I just don’t think Orton has what we need! It’s like our team is a 400,000 dollar sports car with a manual trans and he is a teenager just getting his license with no experience driving a manual trans! Oh yeah nice post on the other blog Ashley…it’s always nice to read your comments…….Can I take you to a game this year? lol….gotta try right?

    23. Deify_you says:

Na, I see Orton doing well in this offense. Remember he has WAY better receivers and an outstanding OL than he did in Chicago. But the preseason is next week so we shall see what Orton can bring to the table.
Sounds like the defense will be a huge upgrade from last season. I’m excited that we have another legendary safety that can make the those big hits like Lynch did. Looking forward to how Ayers does this evening, I’ve watched some highlights of his on youtbe along with Rulon Davis(if you guys havent seen this guy in action search for his highlight vid on youtube you’ll be surprised and ask yourself why this guy was a CFA)

    24. ElwaysGone says:

Why is D.J. Williams coming off the field with the special nickel package instead of Davis? Is Powell looking healthy? I think he can be a major clog in the line.

    25. brian_schneider says:

Yes..Ayers finally we got one of them done. Dawkins is going to bring the pain to all of our opponents. Did you watch him lay a stick on Quinn?? I mean that was only 1/2 speed probably full speed Quinn’s head would be on backwards..

    26. reaper81 says:

IF ANYONE WANTS TO SEE WHAT BRAIN DAWKINS IS ABOUT, GO TO YOUTUBE.COM AND TYPE IN WEAPON X-BRIAN DAWKINS AND WATCH!!!!
I’M GLAD TO SEE ROBERT AYERS OUT THERE, WELL KNOWSHON IS NEXT.

    27. Marshallman-15 says:

this is maybe the most random comment in the history of denver broncos comments, but do you guys think the bengaks will do good? i mean, they will lose the first game of the season, but they signed laveraneus coles, lost houszamanzadeh, but all the games they handed it off twenty times or more, the either won or tied with the eagles lol

    28. dogman67156 says:

Personally I am not worrying about Moreno holding out. He is giving the coaches a better look at some of the other backs. Moreno can come in late and ride the pine this season. Denver has several good young running backs that if given a chance might be very good. The way Denver backs got hurt last year, they need to be deep in that area.

    29. champrox24 says:

“My Life, Your Entertainment” is like the perfect song for them haha

    30. eeerockski says:

Just heard that Jarvis Moss is still not back w/ the team. JARVIS, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, we need you, man. You weren’t drafted with such a high pick cause you can’t play. We all go through rough times, some worse than others, but we (the fans), and your team-mates believe in you, and your abilities. Take this time off to refocus yourself and come back out and do what you do. Dominate. Don’t take no for an answer, man. Many talented folks are never given a chance at this level, grasp it and don’t let go. And if worse comes to worst, at least you can say you gave it your all bro. I don’t know you, or exactly what you’re going through, but word on the street is that you’re having a hard time converting. I believe in you man. We believe in you. (I’m hoping this reaches Moss since Ayers stated he was on the website while he was out)

    31. eeerockski says:

I think it’s dumb to put “first comment” and I’ll never change that. Save that for MySpace. I like to come to this Denver Broncos sight for football info and talk, not a childish race to see who can post “first comment.” That’s all I have to say about that one forever.

    32. Dr.Chris24 says:

eeerockski, don’t read the comment. nobody is forcing you to.

    33. eeerockski says:

Thanks Dr.Chris24, I’ll take your advice.

    34. Dynamicdave says:

eeerockski, stop being so touchy. Besides, none of us are the “blog police.”

    35. Dr.Chris24 says:

I don’t care how any of you feel. what is the big deal about someone posting first comment.

    36. Dynamicdave says:

cutler6101, and you base this decision on Orton from what, exactly? From the year that he has yet to play with Denver? To the winning record he had with Chicago; a team that was filled with less talented personnel that Denver currently has? Based off a down yet to be played? Stop calling him a failure (you did, just in subtle tones) before the guy has even had a chance. Or better yet, offer a reason why you feel he won’t be any good in Denver, other then just saying that you think he isn’t what Denver needs? WHY do you think that? What stats do you have that shows he isn’t the answer? McD thinks he can get it done, so for now, I’ll trust the coaches decision over yours or anyone else’s that thinks he can’t cut it in Denver before he has even played.

    37. Dynamicdave says:

You know it doesn’t bother me in the slightest, Doc. Some people just have too much time on their hands. Sometimes little things agitate people for no apparent reason. Too many important things in the world to complain/worry about, other then 1st comments.

    38. broncofanlvnm says:

Man, I’m really excited about Robert Ayers signing! He’s very quick, athletic and is all over the field. Check out these highlights of him if you haven’t already seen them. There’s even one of him picking off a Mark Stafford pass! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAR9Qb3liRs

    39. broncofanlvnm says:

Oh, by the way. Congrats on the first comment Dr. Chris, and I wish you many more!

    40. Dr.Chris24 says:

thanks lvnm. I hope to get many more. it is a great honor.

    41. broncs55 says:

I laughed my butt off at the hit Dawkins gave the rook!

Dawkins is quite intimidating though, even in just the pictures of him running after people!

That is only 1 of the reasons he has been my favorite player for several years now! It’s a dream come true he’s finally on the Broncos squad!

    42. LBWilson56 says:

Dr Chris 24….Dont sweat it buddy…i guess its only a select few on this site that knows”first comment”is in fun….
DynamicDave..Hey bro..glad u got over the migraine…And your right,i not understanding this Orton bashing when the man hasnt even played one down yet in a game situation for us…..Ya know,i used to post that there will be alot of sportscasters that are gonna owe Orton an apology….I guess the same applies to a few “Broncos”fans too……….

    43. BroncosLax says:

I cant see why we would want Tim Tebow. Has anyone noticed half his touchdowns are on runs? He maybe talented but we just don’t need him. If the Bears do horrible and we get a High pick it should go Defensive with someone like Taylor Mays from USC, then we could take McCoy in the 2nd round because that’s what he will be.

      Here you go eeerockski:

      http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp09/news/story?id=4377411

Jarvis Moss is done mulling over retirement and has reported to camp. I dont know about everyone else ut I really want to see him make an impact. He fits the OLB Position in our 3-4 so well, has crazy speed size and strength for that position. If he gets a chance I think a Lot of people will be surprised.

I think Torain will also start and if he can be healthy, then he will prove to be Shanahans’ last steal RB. He runs Like an old Bronco great, lets see if he becomes one himself.

I dont see Jordan going far, I like his talent, size and gamestyle but he is too injury prone, and Hillis does what he does, but better and I think for less money too so…

    44. 831_Broncos_Fan says:

I dont think it would be fair if Moreno starts ahead of Torain. Torain has been doing great and working hard since the start of camp(well thats what everyone has been saying)

      WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

    45. cutler6101 says:

slow down Dynamicdav……it’s just my opinion! I hope he does good but judging on from his inconsistency and being inaccurate sometimes going deep! Like cutlers record if our defense wasn’t so bad the last couple of years he would have some more wins…..orton had a good defense that took them to the super bowl a couple years back and orton without them maybe wouldn’t have a winning record….and that is why I don’t judge on winning record because it isn’t a personal stat it’s a team stat. He didn’t have the talent in chicago for sure and I know we have it (the best in the nfl) so hopefully he turns out to be a gunslinger! I was just being real and there is that chance that he could falter and simms come in. I have heard good things about him but every time someone intercepts a pass in practice it looks bad. We will be a sb team if we get the right ppl next couple years. later

    46. cutler6101 says:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLkMB5l-Roc&feature=related
yeah that is a nice video of ayers! I hope he produces…he plays aggressive and that is what we need. this is a video of lee robinson staying with a wr done the side line…amazing because he is 255lbs
