Day 19 Blog

August 18th, 2009 - 5:41pm by Gray Caldwell

After it looked like rain would move the Broncos’ practice to an indoor facility, the skies cleared, and the team was out on the field at Dove Valley. Despite a little wetness, fans still showed up in droves, and were treated to a session full of 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, including several focusing on the red zone.

Here are some quick hits from the slightly more than two-hour practice.

ROLL CALL: Several veterans who missed practice yesterday evening were back on the field Tuesday afternoon, including Daniel Graham, Brandon Marshall and D.J. Williams.

  • It was the first day of practice for new Broncos defensive lineman Le Kevin Smith, who was acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots yesterday.
  • POSITIONING: The first unit defense matched the team’s depth chart, with Kenny Peterson, Ronald Fields and Ryan McBean on the line, Mario Haggan, Andra Davis, Williams and Elvis Dumervil at linebacker and Champ Bailey, Andre’ Goodman, Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill in the secondary.

  • The kickoff return team this afternoon consisted of Peterson, Peyton Hillis, Kory Lichtensteiger, Reid, Spencer Larsen, Wesley Woodyard, Darcel McBath, David Bruton, Haggan and Josh Barrett, with Alphonso Smith and Kenny McKinley rotating return duties.
  • Le Kevin Smith got some work with the second-unit defensive line.
  • DRILLS: During one-on-one drills between defensive linemen and linebackers versus offensive linemen and tight ends, things got a little spirited. On one battle between Richard Quinn and Darrell Reid, both linebackers coach Don Martindale and tight ends coach Clancy Barone claimed victory for their side. “That’s a win for us!” shouted Barone, while Martindale simultaneously heaped praise on Reid.

  • Peterson and Graham’s matchup brought a little talking from the two after the fact, but the two didn’t get a chance to go up again, and after the drill the players walked up to each other and exchanged a quick five and fist bump.
  • Later in more one-on-ones, the defense had a string of good matchups. Robert Ayers made a good move to get past his blocker, then a few plays later Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder got to the quarterback on back-to-back reps. The offensive ilne made some plays as well, with Ryan Clady stacking up nicely against Dumervil twice, and Matt McChesney recovering to keep his feet in front of a hard-charging Nic Clemons and keep him away from the quarterback.
  • In field goal drills, the unit practiced a fake, with Brett Kern connecting with Daniel Graham, who ran it in for a touchdown.
  • PLAYMAKERS: Quinn made a solid play in the passing game during a red zone 7-on-7 drill. Chris Simms backed up in the pocket and fired a pass directly to the rookie tight end in the back of the end zone, with fellow rookie Alphonso Smith in coverage. Quinn took the ball right out of the cornerback’s hands for a touchdown.

  • Kyle Orton found Eddie Royal for a quick touchdown in an 11-on-11 red zone drill, which disappointed the defense because it looked a little too easy. On the next play, the unit brought a heavy blitz, but Orton quickly dropped back and floated a pass high into the hands of Tony Scheffler — just past the coverage of Josh Barrett — for back-to-back scores.
  • Later in the 11-on-11 red zone drill, the first unit offense and defense stepped up to the line, and it was announced that there was one play to win the game. Orton took the snap and handed off to Hillis, who plowed his way through a hole created by the offensive line for a touchdown, giving the offense the win.
  • Marshall made a few tough catches during practice, once snagging a pass right in front of Brian Dawkins over the middle, and later doing the same thing in front of Renaldo Hill. Of course, no hits were made after the catch, but the receiver’s ability to go over the middle was evident.
  • Tony Carter almost had an interception during an 11-on-11 drill, but the ball fell to the ground. As has been the defense’s policy, the unit treated it like a fumble, but Jeb Putzier was able to get to the ball before the defense and jogged into the end zone.
  • Moulton ended the 11-on-11 session with an interception, causing his teammates to chant “Defense!” as the team moved on to field goal drills.
  • QUICK HITS: Le Kevin Smith and Chris Baker worked to the side with defensive line coach Wayne Nunnely in between drills.

  • Royal acted as quarterback for the rest of the receivers as they each ran routes to the far end zone to start another drill. Most of the balls were right on the mark, but some players goofed around with their fellow receiver throwing them passes — Chad Jackson tried to catch it behind his back, but it hit him right in the back as he and the rest of the receivers had a good laugh.
  • During a 7-on-7 drill, Marquez Brandon made a nice catch and turned to run up the sideline. Most of the defenders kneeling on the sideline got out of the way, but Rashod Moulton stepped up to playfully try to knock the ball away from the rookie. Branson held on.
  • DAILY JUKEBOX: There was quite a selection during Tuesday’s practice, as there were plenty of 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills that required some crowd noise. The playlist was chosen by Head Coach Josh McDaniels and assistant to the head coach Mark Thewes. Here’s practically a whole Broncos practice mixtape:

  • Poison – “Nothin’ But a Good Time”
  • Kris Kross – “Jump” (Marcus Thomas, Darrell Reid and Chris Baker had a little head bobbing going)
  • Hurricane Chris – “Halle Berry (She’s Fine)” (This selection got Alphonso Smith and Joshua Bell dancing)
  • Notorious B.I.G. – “Hypnotize”
  • Michael Jackson – “Bad”
  • The Who – “Won’t Get Fooled Again”
  • Beastie Boys – “Intergalactic”
  • Black Eyed Peas – “Boom Boom Pow”
  • Foo Fighters – “Everlong”
  • DJ Khaled – “We Takin’ Over”
  • Neil Young – “Rockin’ in the Free World”
  • U2 – “Sunday, Bloody Sunday”
  • QUOTABLE:
“That’s kind of like brothers. Daniel and I are really close. Sometimes out here in competition, we are both competitors, we get a little heated and tempers flare a little bit. But 15 minutes later we were laughing and joking about it, so it’s all in fun.”
-Kenny Peterson, on getting heated with Daniel Graham during practice.

The team will be back on the field for two practices tomorrow, scheduled for 8:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. MDT.

    2. broncogodd says:

Great to see Marshal back and I guess the press doesn’t know everything does it,

    3. BroncoAussie says:

Hey I think this is wrong:

‘DRILLS: During one-on-one drills between defensive linemen and linebackers versus offensive linemen and tight ends, thinks got a little spirited.’

Is the ‘thinks’ meant to be things?

    4. 07elway says:

Great update guys! Glad to hear Marshall was back, I guess. lol Soundsa like it was a real fun productive practice.

    5. BroncoOrdie0730 says:

It’s great to see the guys out there having fun and being competitive. i like the fire that they are showing and it’s great to see that Marshall, DJ and Dawkins are back on the field.
i can’t wait for preseason to end and for the regular season to get here. there was some promise in the defense and i think after the gitters are gone you are going to see some great things out of them. we have a tough schedule and everyone is expecting us to fail so now all we have to do is shut them all up.
keep up the hard work guys and GO BRONCOS!!!!

    6. BroncoAussie says:

Haha Gray I see you got your mistake, thanks for the update though, will there be video today?

    7. JaZzyFrIzZlE says:

      Hey guys,

It seems “no PR hard feelings” with Marshall.

Still tuesday… come on game day!

      Go Broncooos!

    10. Marshallman-15 says:

It’s a good thing they haven’t been playing System of a Down. somebody would probably pull a knife on McDaniels

    11. CARAMELLOO says:

What up my Broncos fam?! What I love most about these blogs are the playlist. It’s so nice to see what type of music the players and coaches like.

    12. letdamansmoke says:

Caramelloo…i remember u. lol. I agree too, the playlists are my favorite part as well. After reading the one where Peyton chose the playlist (i still can’t believe he put them through that) i was hooked.

Glad to see Marshall out there…we’ll see how long. (Please don’t go)
      shortest post ever 07elway.

    13. Music1812 says:

      Couple more for the playlist:

Bowlen/McD/Xanders: “Burning Down The House” – Talking Heads

Hoping I’m Wrong But Can See The Broncos: “Free Fallin” – Tom Petty

    14. Greatness007 says:

I see we have a new d- lineman on the field. We gonna be roating so much this yr between dls and lbs. I wope we dont ket a 12 man or not enough men on the field penalty. lol For the most part. I think we’re highly slepted on. It is gonna show during the season. Orton will get better. Mashall will get what he deserves. McD will not destoy the team. Bowlen will get all the praise. Then we will think. What were we all arguing about all summer.lol

    15. CARAMELLOO says:

What up letdamansmoke and what up my bro Greatness007! Yeah letdamansmoke I’m usually here but in the back chilling. How are the blogs on Broncos Country? I tried them one they but just felt like an outsider!

    16. wahleaf says:

Im glad to see b-marsh was there today we really need to pay him based on size, skills, and age he’s our best player we need to pay him he put in work plus i feel he really wants to be a bronco.

    17. CARAMELLOO says:

Ok all of the sports casters keep saying B. Marsh is our best player. He’s not our best player bc if he was he wouldn’t act the way he has. Besides we have Clady, Moreno, and Royal who I would nomanate for best player of Marshall!

    18. Torain ATV fan says:

      Caramelloo,

i think when the season is over with, Moreno will satnd out as our best player also.

    19. CARAMELLOO says:

High five to that Torain ATV fan! I think he can do what L.T. did when he 1st got in the league but much more. Plus he played in the SEC!

    20. bronc fan in WA says:

you cant say moreno is our best player when hes only a rookie in the preseason.

clady is our best player on offense, and champ is still our best on defense. those 2 are our cornerstones of this team.

    21. BroncoAussie says:

      Yeah highlights!

    22. CARAMELLOO says:

I know I’m gonna get stoned for this but alot of yall give Champ way too much credit. I’ve seen him miss tackles and blow coverages just like the others. Why do people always give him a hall pass but go after other players hard when they mess up?!

    23. SC_Socnorb says:

glad to see him out there too but wahleaf, what happens when “our best player” cant play and we dumped a whole heap of cash on him so we cant get any other players. I would rather give royal and hillis more cash since we know we can count on them more than marshall.

    24. BroncoAussie says:

Champ is human, he makes mistakes but not as many as other players.

    25. CARAMELLOO says:

So honestly what does everyone in their heart and gut feel Marshall will do? Will he keep fighting and crying for a trade, will he sit and pout, or will he wise up-toughen up and play?

    26. JaZzyFrIzZlE says:

      champ24 is the password,
my copy and paste shorted me out

    27. BroncoAussie says:

He will play he knows he can’t get payed or traded unless he plays and well.

    28. CARAMELLOO says:

He might as well do like Anquan Bolden! It’s a shame that their biggest gripe is money!

    29. broncoHOLIC19 says:

I have been reading the comments from yesterdays practice and todays, and i dont understand why so many people think B. Marshall will be traded or not in denver this year. McDaniels has already said he wasnt going anywhere. (well i say, at least not this year anyway) Now even though u cant believe everything McDaniels says, after everything that happened with the fall out of J. Cutler. But i dont think he’s stupid enough to let go of another offense pro bowler, cause im sure he dont want to look like anymore of a retard then he already has since he’s been the coach in denver after letting go of the face of are franchise. but but i think at the same time he has made some good decisions to. So im going to try and
have feath in McDaniels to lead this team in the right dreaction..

      GO BRONCOS!!!

    30. 07elway says:

Hey CARAMELLOO, how are ya? Champ can only do so much on his own out on the field. For the time he played last season, it didn’t look so good cause our D was horrible last year. Now he’ll have a team to work with and it will make a big difference having Dawkins with him out there too.

LOL letdamansmoke… you noticed my really short post too.

    31. BroncoAussie says:

McD said this “I think everybody in this, I hope everybody in the world-you do your job well, you’re going to be rewarded. He’s no different, you know what I mean. We’re all in the same boat. We’re trying to do the best we can and hopefully we’ll all be given what we’ve earned and deserve. But that applies to everybody.”

Marshall has done his job well and wants his reward. He will probably get a new contract mid season if he does well or end of year, or franchise tagged.

    32. Horvil Tiki says:

I cant wait to see the dawkin guy. I wonder if they should play he next game cause he need to heal and be the healthy guy. But I bet he light up some corny fool so badly even with nub hand functional. we dodge bullet with morenoe guy I so glad he not hurt to the badly. I see power run guy, all day fall forward like terrel davis.

    33. CARAMELLOO says:

What up to my sis Ash! Yeah I hear what you are saying as well. Yeah I hear what you are saying as well. We will be ok, he will be ok, and everything will fall into place.

    34. ocrush4ever says:

Marshall’s agent is a sleazeball. They knew about the PR mess-up right after the game on Thursday, but of course it only comes out on the same day that Marshall’s agent is at the Broncos’ door sniffing around for a new contract. Marshall wants to play, bottom line. He wants to get paid, but he wants to play foremost. His agent advises him to make it a “pay me or trade me” situation. But you can tell by watching Marshall in practice that it’s the furthest thing from his mind when he’s on the field. He’ll play in Denver with his current contract just as happily as he would play anywhere else or for more.

    35. Samoanbronco says:

This update is “Wiggity wiggity wack! **JUMP JUMP**” lol

    36. OGBronco4life says:

Horvil Tiki – you are funny guy, I enjoy your posts!!!!!!!!!!!

    37. knowshon27 says:

Let’s hope your right ocrush4ever let’s hope your right.

    38. broncofan96 says:

07elway your right just look at 05 when we had willamson(27) at other corner champ had what 10 Int that year i think.

    39. 07elway says:

LOL Samoan, you crack me up.

And CARAMELLOO, do you know you said the same thing twice in a row? hahaha Too funny.

    40. TheRoyalBeast says:

Yay for Brandon Marshall practicing and I agree with you ocrush forever. about all that. Marshall wants to play, when he gets out on that field he will entertain and he WILL PLAy. WIth as much intensity as he has always played. doesnt know how to play different. He just likes to make people go WOW lol. But at the same time its also a personal thing, he wont let money come between his production, his shine, and a possible superbowl. He wont let one number(money) affect his other number(stats). DOnt worry yall, He wont pull a Randy in Oakland. GO MARSHALL. GO BRONCOS!!!!!

    41. TheRoyalBeast says:

and Broncofan his name was Darrent WILLIAMS…The Late Great Darrent Williams (27). Still miss his spirit and impact out there ont he field.

    42. wiggytwig says:

This report was nice and ll…but ‘B-Marsh’ was 1/2 a$$ing it. No, that is WAY too much credit. He was on PUNT COVERAGE unit and Keith Burns had to yell at him to “get moving on the snap!”. Then, he completely kept separate from the other receivers during drills, literally hopping around and talking to the defense like some under-medicated A.D.D. child while the other receivers worked and listened to their coaches

He is talented…a VERY talented CANCER

    43. broncofan96 says:

ment to put williams sorry brain somewhere else mybad

    44. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Perhaps Royal is our secret weapon at quarterback in the Wildcat. Things are progressing nicely for us. GO BRONCOS!!!

    45. Dynamicdave says:

I know if Marshall does his job, the money will come, but I won’t be feeling sorry for him in the mean time. I mean, yes, he’s grossly underpaid and gee, he might starve or end up in a shelter, for Gods sake, with that measly 2.2 million dollars he’s making this year. Yes, we should really cry and feel sorry for brandon. .

    46. leftybigguns says:

I forgot, how long did they say the recovery would be for Dawkins’ broken hand?

    47. Dynamicdave says:

      Around 6 weeks.

    48. letdamansmoke says:

CARAMELLOO, The Broncos Country blogs are mean, ruthless, and addicting all at the same time. I LOVE IT.

      My man Horvil Tiki…good sh!+
      I like ur posts. lol

    49. Dynamicdave says:

Yeah, Horvil is the bomb. He always makes me chuckle.

letdamansmoke, I try to stay away as much as possible from the mean blogs. Don’t like the bashers who take it to a personal level. I had one guy back in June make a remark about my mother at the DP. She just passed away at the end of May. I made it known that I would break him in half if he said that to my face and invited him to look me up in Vegas if he ever stops in. They removed my post and his (gee, I can’t understand why? LOL). But I like this site because the majority of the bloggers are positive, knowledgeable and familiar. I like to debate, not get into name calling. It’s counter productive, IMO.

    50. monodono says:

Marshall will play and if He plays well He will be paid. I’m with you Dynamicdave, Brandon is being paid 2.2 mill and I’m sad for Him. Oh wait did’nt He get a signing bonus too? Never mind.

When I was growing up I worked on a wheat farm. I worked all year long for that harvest. When it came we got paid based on our performance, If the grain came in with other grains like alfalfa or weeds we got less per truck load. The cleaner it was the more we got paid.
I later moved into the oil field and the same thign if we drilled the whole on time or early we got paid more. If we got stuck in the whole we were docked, or fired.
The same thing should apply here, if Brandon Marshall plays hard and does well He should be paid more, until then He should honor His contract He agreed to in the first place. I think He is in a good position to make alot of money in the future.

      TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

      GO BRONCOS ! ! !
