Dawkins Selected to Ninth Pro Bowl

January 19th, 2012 - 4:34pm by Gray Caldwell

On Thursday, the Broncos’ Pro Bowl headcount jumped to six with the news that Brian Dawkins will be headed to his ninth career Pro Bowl.

The veteran safety was named an alternate in late December, and made the AFC squad in place of Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu, who will not participate due to injury.

Dawkins is now tied with John Lynch, another former Bronco, for the second-most Pro Bowl trips all-time among safeties. They trail only Washington/Houston safety Ken Houston’s 10 trips. Another Broncos safety, Steve Atwater, is next in line with eight.

Dawkins will join five teammates — Champ Bailey, Ryan Clady, Elvis Dumervil, Willis McGahee and Von Miller — in Hawaii, marking the most all-star game selections for Denver since the Broncos had seven in 2001.

I like Kirkpatrick based on his Size and Speed… 6’2″ and still sub 4.5… not many of those guys available this year…

We have a good small Corner in Harris, and guys like Vaughn and Thompson should provide some depth… If the thought of moving Champ to Safety is a reality, Kirkpatrick would be my guy… I like the safety combination of Champ and QC… I think QC can be a quality starter for many seasons… 2 picks in 2 playoff games doesn’t hurt his credibility with me either…

  2. OrangeTsunami says:

Last Nuggets question, do you think Melo chose to wear #7 in an attempt to retain the Denver fan base as much as possible?

  3. OrangeTsunami says:

I love Kirkpatrick, but we’ll have to move up to get him.. Unless he gets arrested again.. :P

  4. Bronco_Turtle says:

I don’t know OT… tough one to speculate on… I really have no Idea why he is in #7 and not #15…

*Funny right, that is old Number was Tebow, and his new Number is Elway! Just a Crazy Denver Coincidence I think…

  5. OrangeTsunami says:

Well, all we know for sure is that we both like Nuggets.. ;)

  6. OrangeTsunami says:

Btw, it really bugs me that the media out here refers to the Broncos as the “Denver Tebow’s”…

  7. OrangeTsunami says:

Relax people.. I meant the basketball team… Shame on you if you were thinking something different.. Pshhh.. Tisk, tisk…

  8. OrangeTsunami says:

    Interesting fact:

Of the 14 coaches hired in 2009, only two remain…

    Hello all, how’s everybody doing?

  10. gardenstatebroncofan says:

Looks like we have a bit more talent than the “experts” say we do……..good job to the 6!

    GO BRONCOS!

  11. dad13xbroncsfan says:

    the Miller fine interests me.

    ah…like…what took so long?

Seems to me fines are normally assessed within 1-3 days after the infraction. I have been waiting on this and was surprised a bit when it was so long in coming.

What I saw on game day – cuz I was stone-cold sober/LOL – was a late hit and then Miller gets up and goes after that guy with helmet and fists. Then it looked like Miller got the worst of it as 3 separate linemen gave significant shoves that made Miller look like a little man. I think I recall Miller pushing himself around an official’s restraint as well. My immediate thought was that he was fortunate to still be in the game and that the fine was going to be at least $50,000 and that Miller was likely to miss the start of 2012 season.

When I see a $7500 hand slap. The small fine looks to me like the NFL felt obligated to respond, but after extended investigation, there must have been a lot going on there that wasn’t on film. Miller’s level of frustration might also indicate that the Pats O-line had gotten inside Miller’s head more than a little bit. Late hits-not hearing whistles – yep…Miller was way off his game and I’d say they got to him. All of that is a normal part of the game…makes me really wonder what the officials overheard that got Miller off-the-hook.

So, I think Miller grows from this. We – the Broncos (and the fans because Miller didn’t get any suspensions) ought to feel as though we got outta this one cheap! Notice – Tebow wasn’t pulling Miller out of the fray! That’s progress!

All-in-all my read is that Pats are playing mean and dirty (I have no issue with that – it’s a mean and dirty game!). Miller grows. The team is fighting for each other. This little whoopin’ as well as the one on the scoreboard…is going to last the veterans of this game for a long…long time. (I still would love to have the details of what was going on down on that field!)

  12. dad13xbroncsfan says:

Two potential situational justifications for the Broncos:

    1. The Ravens show up and clean-up. unlike!
    2. The Pats show up and clean house as in a 56-0 blow-out. Like!

an additional upside down win for the Pats in SB would go a long way toward improving my attitude and demeanor these days!!!

This is my official change in prediction for the end of the season. LOL

Sure would like to see the Niners take it to NY though!!

  13. dad13xbroncsfan says:

I know why BFE isn’t here. Where are the rest of you?

I’m remodeling the kitchen, and I’m still keeping tabs on you all. I’ll jump in here and there. Trying to make up for lost time during the season with the wife. She’s totally done with Tebow and the Broncos. LOL

  14. alex4serg says:

This east west game is pretty good.

Not really a college fan, so I am somewhat unfamiliar with the rules though. This is essentially like the college pro-bowl though, right?

  15. strandoftds says:

Hey Daddybronco, hows the day going for ya? Blessings to you and yours!

  16. strandoftds says:

Shaztah, I fullt agree with you on your 8:09 a.m. post, you called it and I believe.

  17. shaztah says:

Thanks Strand. Honestly I want to believe that they have no intention of trading Tim. From different interviews the players and the coaches have said that not only did Fox change the attitude in the locker room but so did Tebow. The fans are excited again, the players are having fun and believing and the organization is making money. How much of that would they lose if they traded Tebow? The players really believe in their QB and they all have great chemistry why mess that up? Anyways, I will support whatever thay choose to do I just hope that if they trade Tim he doesn’t take his next team to the playoffs and we don’t make it.

  18. strandoftds says:

The trade talk that we hear about is only by fans speculations and their own wants and desires. Tims going nowhere. I`m resting easy on that.

  19. strandoftds says:

Just like any other QB, it takes a few years to give true evaluation and Tim Tebow is going to get the same eval just like anyone else. And why not if you want to see if he can learn in the offseason, its only fair. Many want Tim Tebow to fail because he defies all of the odds, and they don`t want to be proven wrong. And Many can`t stand Tim Tebow because they just plainly hait people who are good and pure.

  20. oldsouthstander says:

    Seweatherman: Got your 2nd BBBP.
I assume you mean drafting O when goods D is available and other things that don’t make sense to us Bronco Blog drafting experts.

  21. denver0723 says:

    oldsouth,

Tim Tebow will be the starting QB for the Broncos come week 1 of the 2012 season. And in that first game, Tebow will throw for atleast 250yds and 2 TDs and everyone will be forced to reevaluate whether or not they think he will succeed.

  22. tnalen66 says:

congrats DAWK! I hope you can play cuz it might be your last Pro Bowl or last game i hope not! I still wonder why Plummer did not want to play in the pro bowl after the 2005 season. He really wasn’t hurt.

  23. tnalen66 says:

Players who snub the pro bowl should not be allowed to be selected. LANCE BRIGGS. Injuries yes. Being too good to play for the fans who pay you not right. Reason 101 why i love Bailey. he plays and feels its am honor to be seleted.

  24. sndvl says:

    I agree Tnalen66.

Unless they are injured…there should be no reason to miss it.
Not sure if it’s still being played the week before the big game, but that would be a legitimate excuse to decline an invite…IMO

    Broncos Country Strong 2012!

  25. strandoftds says:

I haven`t heard anything from the media saying that Tim Tebow will be traded. It`s some fans that are speculating and wanting it to happen. I pay it no mind, because its just what it is, speculation. Tim Tebow is going nowhere. We don`t even have a 2nd QB to speak of except Adam Weber. Let the nay-sayers talk. I can be just as loud as the haters and my mind will not change.

  26. Applejack says:

Interesting article on why McCoy did not get the Miami job. Seems Miami wanted Bowles as the DC and McCoy pushed back.

His reasons were premised on his desire to select his own coordinators with input from the front office. Sounds reasonable to me.

  27. baylinorcrush says:

The best part about that article AJ is all the comments that follow it. What a mess the Dolphins franchise is in.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

I guess Marshall deserved that much, LOL.

Broncos Country is the best blog in th NFL!

  30. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Smart move by McCoy … never go into a head coaching job … especially your first … handcuffed. Gotta start out your career right or you may never get another HC shot if things go bad and u get fired. At least when u pick your people you know you lost on your own. Welcome back McCoy … while I may not be your number 1 fan … the thought of Gase or Scherer as the OC made my cringe.

    TRB

  31. sndvl says:

I read the comments too baylin. Many of them didn’t have very flattering things to say about McCoy. That strikes me as odd…considering the spat McCoy and Fox had in the divisional game…

I’m beginning to wonder if keeping McCoy as our OC might be a bad decision…

    Broncos Country Stong 2012!

    Denver0723: Got your BBBP.

  33. seweatherman1 says:

    oldsouthstander,
You got the idea of it. Great! thanks.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

    Championship day!

It doesn’t get any better than that.

I’ll go with the two teams with elite QBs.

    Giants-Pats rematch in the SB.

  35. seweatherman1 says:

    I agree bay.

What happened on here last night? Everybody take an evening off? BFE wasn’t even on here.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

When BFE gets wasted one night it takes him a couple days to recover, the way he goes at it it would take me a week.

And get used to the slow down, we have a couple weeks to go with the senior bowl, SB and pro bowl and after that it will be very, very quiet around here, just a few hardcore is all for like the combine but things won’t pick up until mid March for FA but even then as we know Fox and Bowlen don’t do FA, so we’ll pick up some crumbs at the end of that when all the valuable ones are gone and the only true material that will pick the bloggers interest is mid April when the draft rolls around.

Of course now and then you’ll have some of the usual killing time shooting the breeze stuff by a few bloggers who are bored to death.

Normal February-March stuff so you don’t get your hopes up.

  37. seweatherman1 says:

I guess last year I just got used to us all being on here every day yaking about the pending lock-out, then the lock-out and all that surrounded that.

  38. seweatherman1 says:

I remember the days a looooooooong time ago when I would get knee walking, commode hugging. BUT…those days are long gone now. WOW! I’m glad too. I really don’t know how I drank so much.

  39. shaztah says:

So, is Allen still interviewing for the Raiders? I guess since McCoy turned down the Raiders and thought he was going to get the Dolphins job then he is out of that one too. I doubt they would ask him back since he scorned them.

  40. baylinorcrush says:

About the Shrine game yesterday, these are some O line guys we could look at for late picks:

Miami University guard Brandon Brooks, Connecticut center Moe Petrus and Saskatchewan right guard Ben Heenan all did a great job throughout the game of lead blocking in the middle to open up holes for the running game.

The player who really helped his stock this week was Brooks. Weighing in at 353 pounds, Brooks is an absolutely massive player, and he uses his strength and power to his advantage.

Brooks really turned heads with his performance in this game, and went from a late-rounds draft selection to a player who will be selected in the middle rounds.

North Carolina cornerback Charles Brown and Duke strong safety Matt Daniels were impressive. Brown did very well locking down opposing receivers in coverage, and proved himself worthy of being drafted in this game.

Daniels showed his ability as a hard-hitter, making some great tackles in this game. Daniels needs work on his angles and is not a great athlete, but he solidified his status as a player who should be selected somewhere in the middle of Day 3.

Dan Hope contributed those game impressions and of course the Shrine game is for the guys who are not good enough to be selected for the Senior bowl, but still every year a few Shrine game hopefuls make it to the NFL and it looks like if we get any this year it may be an O lineman, also one player who made a statement was Merrimack middle linebacker Shawn Loiseau. Loiseau’s high motor was on display throughout the game, as he was consistently in on plays throughout the game, both defensively and on special teams. Just a late round pick though, not very talented overall but plays with a huge heart.

  41. seweatherman1 says:

I wish I could have seen it. It wasn’t televised here by the local stations. Had to show basketball and boxing, along with the Gasperilla in Tampa. whoopee!!!

  42. OrangeTsunami says:

Second to last Football Sunday folks… Enjoy while it’s here.. I think NE runs the table, as no team currently has the personnel to stop those two TE’s IMO.. Our FO better be watching, b/c if Ed Reed can’t help to slow down those TE’s, we obviously need to come up with a unique and clever way to stop them, personnel and scheme wise during the offseason..

    Quick though on FA/draft:

I realize that FA begins before the draft, but a prudent organization would do its due diligence on the top few hundred college prospects, before FA begins.. It’s a good idea to take an inventory of players by position as we see it before FA, so that we know which positions to target in FA.. As Harbaugh was recently quoted: “the only thing to fear is being under prepared”…

  43. baylinorcrush says:

As far as The Raiders and Allen, the fact that they are so slow and delibearte about it is they are probably waiting to interview one or more of the assistant coaches who are in the Championships today.

We need to keep Allen way more than we needed to keep McCoy.

  44. baylinorcrush says:

    deliberate

  45. OrangeTsunami says:

Allen at 39, is not ready for a HC job, IMO and certainly not one such as the one in Oakland.. Of course, I want him to stay for selfish reasons, but Allen’s best career move would be to complete the defensive turn around in Denver, while learning the ropes from John Fox, who has a ton of knowledge obtained from several greats of the past..

Top 10 Championship Sundays Of The Super Bowl Era

    1. 1987 Season — Washington 17, Minnesota 10/Denver 38, Cleveland 33
The Skinny: If not for the heroic efforts of Redskins cornerback Darrell Green (robbing Anthony Carter of a game-tying touchdown in the waning seconds) and Broncos safety Jeremiah Castille (famously stripping Browns tailback Earnest Byner before a game-tying score in the final minute), this Championship Sunday would have produced two overtime classics, thus crushing its competition in this category by the largest of margins. Instead, we’re left to celebrate two amazing games that titillated TV viewers from the first whistle to the final gun — while perpetuating the notions that Vikings and Browns fans are a cursed bunch, resigned to never experience the enduring dream of just one Lombardi Trophy.

And what makes it sooo special for me is I actually was at that “fumble” game! #1 championship Sunday, how lucky can I be…

    6. 1986 — Denver 23, Cleveland 20 (OT)/N.Y. Giants 17, Washington 0
The Skinny: We couldn’t post a list of unforgettable Championship Sundays without a salute to John Elway’s most legendary playoff appearance, via The Drive — a 98-yard TD journey against the Browns to force overtime in the AFC title game. If there’s been a more pressure-packed drive in NFL history — where the opposing quarterback was deep in his own territory and hounded by inhospitable fans — I can’t think of it. For the New York-Washington game, NFL nation learned of the awesome power of Giants Stadium when near-Gale-force winds and one of the modern era’s stingiest defenses join forces. In the Giants’ two NFC playoff games that season, they outscored the 49ers and Redskins 66-3.

Only rated #6 Sunday because the NFC Championship was a one-sided game.

We may not be in it this Sunday, but I do have great memories….

Condoleances to all those who loved him.

  48. OrangeTsunami says:

I also challenge our Front Office to take a look at each Free Agent from all three AFC West teams.. By plucking a quality player from a division rival, it serves a dual role, by making us better and hurting a team we play twice per year, all in one move..

  49. OrangeTsunami says:

It’s too bad his legacy will always be linked to the horrific events that occurred in his program under his eye… The lesson to be learned is no matter how much good you may do, and for however long, it all can be completely forgotten with just one horrific lack in judgement… RIP
