Dawkins Selected to Ninth Pro Bowl

January 19th, 2012 - 4:34pm by Gray Caldwell

On Thursday, the Broncos’ Pro Bowl headcount jumped to six with the news that Brian Dawkins will be headed to his ninth career Pro Bowl.

The veteran safety was named an alternate in late December, and made the AFC squad in place of Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu, who will not participate due to injury.

Dawkins is now tied with John Lynch, another former Bronco, for the second-most Pro Bowl trips all-time among safeties. They trail only Washington/Houston safety Ken Houston’s 10 trips. Another Broncos safety, Steve Atwater, is next in line with eight.

Dawkins will join five teammates — Champ Bailey, Ryan Clady, Elvis Dumervil, Willis McGahee and Von Miller — in Hawaii, marking the most all-star game selections for Denver since the Broncos had seven in 2001.

    Now if that doesn’t kill a blog, I don’t know what will… :P

about 10 days ago I posted a comment about the death of Kaiser and I was shocked none of the bloggers had anything to say about it, not the young ones who knew nothing of him, but the elder bloggers. Anyway, today somebody finally did, Woody:

On May 2, 1983, my day was interrupted by an emergency call.

“I have a scoop for you,” the voice on the phone said. “I just got John Elway.”

    “You’re crazy,” I said.

“I’m dyslexic, but I’m not insane,” he replied, then hung up.

Indeed, Edgar Kaiser Jr. had pulled off the football deal of the century.

Two years earlier, Kaiser, grandson of one of America’s most important industrialists, purchased the Broncos — and the surprises kept right on coming.

Back then, at a dinner in New York, Kaiser asked NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle if any franchises were available. Rozelle set up an introduction with Gerald Phipps. The transaction was completed “in a matter of hours,” Kaiser told me.

At the owners meeting, the 40-year-old novice owner with the Woody Allen appearance was mostly ignored by the veteran owners. But Kaiser developed a close relationship with maverick Colts owner Robert Irsay.

After Baltimore made quarterback John Elway the No. 1 overall pick in the 1983 draft, and Elway declared he would never play for the Colts, Kaiser (he recounted much later to me) called Irsay and said, “If you trade Elway, I want him.”

Irsay called back in a couple of days and said, “If you still want him, you got him.”

And Elway ended up in Denver … for good, and for great.

The last time, we had dinner at The Palm downtown. “You always wrote I didn’t know anything about football, but I got Elway, and look what happened,” he said.

On Jan. 14, 2012, my day was interrupted by an emergency call.

Kaiser’s sudden death, at 69, was announced before the Broncos-Patriots playoff game. There was no moment of silence in respect.

But Kaiser’s substantial life shouldn’t go in passing or without appreciation.

Edgar Kaiser Jr. accomplished much in business and industry and for drug-addiction causes, and he changed the course of Broncos history — because he got Elway.

Thanks again Woody for doing the right thing.

The article is much longer and can be found at the DP if anyone cares…

Great story Bay, this was before my time, but Kaiser sounds like a very smart and savvy businessman, as well as an old school gunslinger.. He is a master of leverage, wow.. I love how the transaction to purchase an NFL team took “hours” over dinner.. Not in today’s NFL.. Lol. This story would make a great movie!

To honor this man, I think our organization better “pull a few triggers” in the Free Agent market.. All TT revenues should go towards signing Free Agents, as I’m sure we’ll get 2-3 national games next season, mostly b/c of Tebow. Top free agent needs: S, WR, RB, and QB

Berore my time in terms of following the transactions of the club.. Lol

This could explain a lot of things as far as Tebow’s development on the field:

Tim Tebow is dyslexic. The learning disorder runs in his family. His dad is dyslexic and so is Robby, who is 6 years older.

“If you say let’s figure out how to work this TV,” Tebow said, “well, if you tell me, ‘Hit this, this and this,’ I won’t remember it as well. But if I go through it and do it, then I’ll have it.”

That has to present a major obstacle for his coaches…

The NFL is half on paper, half on the field, what happens between your ears is a major part of it, specially the QB position.

I’m looking at things about him a little differently now, it may be asking a lot to expect him to understand and read all coverages in this game, not to mention learning a new delivery. No wonder this man does eveything well that comes naturally to him, he does not have the best tools to learn to do anything different. It sounds to me like the Broncos need to hire someone who specializes in understanding his learning restrictions if they haven’t done so.

    I learn something every day.

    I learned a lot today.

  6. baylinorcrush says:

    Glad you enjoyed it.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

If we don’t let Tebow be Tebow I really don’t think this can end well.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

It’s amazing how much clarity I gained just from seemingly insignificant info….. Obviously it could be just me though.

  9. shaztah says:

Bay, glad you understand now. It was said way back about his diability but everyone down played it. That is why it is going to be beneficial with Elway helping him on the field because he learns as he does not as he reads on paper. That is why he has never been a good practice player but he excels in games. I just hope the coaches understand that which I think they do. I am kinda the same way you can show me something but I am not going to remember it and reading is a chore because I have to read something several times to retain it but give me a task and I can learn anything by doing it. Our company installed a brand new payroll system and put me through a 1 day training for it but I was able to teach myself the program in 2 days and create 200 schedules in one day. Now I have all the payroll people calling me for advice and direction. including the ones who conducted the training. LOL

  10. shaztah says:

Also, Tim is very intelligent and he can learn to read defenses it just may take some time. I imagine he learned a lot this year by doing.

  11. OrangeTsunami says:

That is not good news, but it would explain a lot.. NFL offensive plays are drawn up with intricate variations which make it tough to learn, as well as read defenses properly.. If we dont have a specialist for dealing specifically with dysexia in football, we better go out and get one.. Maybe the media will give the kid a little breathing room, and quit acting like a bunch of starving jackal’s with their Tebow coverage… This is also why we need to sign a good veteran QB, to both teach Tebow the ropes, as well as be there for a safety net.. I don’t want to have to start a rookie if something happens or if something doesn’t happen… I really think Jason Campell isn’t a terrible idea, he’s mobile, and developed a decent passing game..

  12. baylinorcrush says:

But unfortunately for me it reinforces my reservations about him ever being able to learn the things needed to be a succesfull NFL QB rather than minimize it. Not a good lesson for me today, clarity gained in my mind yes, but not liking the lesson.

  13. shaztah says:

Then again Bay he has proven that he can learn. He has proved that all of his life. Don’t fret it will happen just watch and see.

  14. OrangeTsunami says:

He basically has to learn a new language, improve his footwork, and work on his accuracy and reads (including check downs), during the offseason.. Not to mention build chemistry with his WR’s and TE’s.. To be successful here, this will be the hardest he has ever worked before in his life in IMO.. Can’t wait to see him do it!

  15. OrangeTsunami says:

And for the record, I am still hopeful than Tebow can until proven he can’t.. But I also want a veteran free agent to be in Tebow’s ear all season, as well as be an option if we have an injury

  16. baylinorcrush says:

You know I’ll be watching, I hope I’ll get the see part also, LOL.

You really don’t have to reassure me though, I can take it either way, Tebow or no Tebow I’ll always have my Broncos.

No Tebow disciple here as you well know, just a Bronco fan hoping he works out but not mortgaging the house on all that.

  17. Applejack says:

Dyslexia is complicated. To the point that there isn’t yet a universally accepted definition. For anyone to guess how dyslexia affects Tim Tebow’s ability to be an NFL QB is pointless.

Everyone, including pro ball players, has certain advantages and disadvantages. Physical, mental or societal. It’s what they accomplish that is the defining grade. If Tebow has a learning disability, he has to spend more time with film, coaches, etc. His responsibility to do what it takes to compensate.

He hasn’t asked for anything beyond an opportunity to prove he can succeed. I respect him for that.

  18. OrangeTsunami says:

Bay – thoughts on signing Jason Campbell? I was never too high on him before, but I think it could make sense now on a few levels.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

I knew I shouldn’t finish all my morning posts with a Tebow one, now all the previous issues have been ignored for him as usual, life as a Bronco fan has become a one way highway, the Tebow way or it’s a dead end, oh well.

  20. denver0723 says:

I’ve been reading Tebow’s book, and throughout it is amazing just how much he has overcome in his life, and how his faith and confidence never seem to get shaken. You also learn a lot about his competitive nature.

This doesn’t add to the dyslexia conversation, but I thought it was another thing worth noting in his progression. In his book, Tim talks about playing baseball when he was younger and how on one occasion he fielded a ball at shortstop and ran down a runner heading for home plate to get the final out.

He said he was puzzled by coaches telling him he should have thrown it to the catcher so the catcher could try to make the play. Tim said he was thinking that he was not interested in the catcher TRYING to make the play, because he wanted to win. Tim took it upon himself and the belief in his own abilities to win the game, as opposed to trusting his teammate to do the same thing.

Tebow has such a passion for winning, that he always takes it upon himself if he feels nobody else can. I think that this is important, because he often says in his “needs improvement” part of his interviews that he needs to trust his teammates. With several dropped passes, and people surrounding him that are just as young as he is, I think it had a huge impact on his decision making this last season.

I mean, how many times during his starting tenure, did we see him hold on to the ball or throw it away, when he seemingly had people open? I believe that not only was he afraid to create a turnover, but that he was also afraid his teammates would not make the play either. He was so focused on himself making a play so he could win, that I believe he often overlooked teammates who have that same mentality. He simply didn’t trust them.

As he said, he isn’t interested in people trying to win, he is interesting in winning. I think if he learns to trust his teammates to make big plays, it will be just as pivotal to his development as everything else.

  21. OrangeTsunami says:

One year deal.. He’s coming off injury, and we’re pretty committed to Tebow to start, barring a huge set back.. It would allow Campbell to maybe get a shot, allowing him to sign a new deal, or move on if he doesn’t get a shot..

  22. baylinorcrush says:

Campbell would be ok, specially since he knows of the Raiders, but it all seems like just bandages this year no matter what we do at QB, whether in FA or in the draft, we are basically stuck with hoping that Tebow becomes the one and it’s a rather uncomfortable thought for me. Will have to see if anything major happens in the draft before I get truly nervous though.

  23. OrangeTsunami says:

Trust me im a Bronco fan first a foremost, but to me, it’s a win win.. Either Tebow learns and becomes what everyone wants, or he doesn’t and we have a bandaid to remain competitive.. 2013′s draft class including Landry Jones and Matt Barkley, plus the other prospects that will pop up over college football next season… If Tebow doesn’t show massive strides at end of season next year, we make the neccesary moves to move up and draft Barkley or Jones or another legit QB prospect! Meanwhile we’ll continue to build out the defense.

    All is good IMO!! 8)

  24. baylinorcrush says:

And I’ve made up my mind Weber is too short because there is only one Brees.

And Quinn is the deer who gets caught in the headlights come real game time.

So we need to bring in at least two QB’s, a veteran in FA and one in the draft, the QB situation in Denver is the furthest thing from settled, the QQ might live on in infamy if Tebow isn’t the one. I wish I would of never come up with the QQ, seems like it’s following me to no end…

Talk about glass half full vs. half empty, LMAO!

  29. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    Campbell sounds good.

Tebow and dyslexia. Im surprised we do not hear more about it. Like him in dyslexia commercials or giving speeches in schools about dyslexia. I dunno what he needs done to learn but he has a bunch of football minds around him who can think up and pay for any possible solution so ill leave it up to them. I’ve always been a firm believer the best way to learn is to do.

I can believe it 0723, he is always trying to make a play. Puts it on his shoulders. Only thing that urks me about him. Like ignoring his check downs and shorter outs (not unless the play was designed for them). One time I think it was against the steelers. He had a check down infront of him but he took it upon himself to run for the first. He got it and it was probably the right choice cuz ball can’t catch and might have been caught … but he definitely has a complex where he feels he must take it upon himself or make the big play.

The qq started when mcd came to town and clashed with cutler … who by all definitions was a franchise Qb .. a jerk maybe but had franchise potential … so we had our guy. We just stupidly traded him away … now its up to us to search for one again or hope Tebow is it. I was fine with my Cutler Marshall connection. Talent and being a jerk tend to come together … just need the right staff that can control em. TRB

  33. OrangeTsunami says:

Shaz – do you know if this Tebow fact widely known? Is there any possible way we don’t know about this? I mean, McD’s drafted him.. Maybe he burned all the notes when he was canned.. Lol

  34. baylinorcrush says:

    Whatever funny face.

  35. OrangeTsunami says:

TRB – agreed about looking back at the Cutler/Marshall trades.. They were both great in terms of what he got in return IMO, but our allocation of draft picks was what made it look like we’ve been chasing our own tails.. It all hinges on Tebow frankly, if he becomes legit, as well as DMT, then it might look pretty good in a few years..

  36. OrangeTsunami says:

Not to put any more pressure on Tebow’s shoulders or anything..

The broncos are only going to get better now. They have almost everything they need to get us a superbowl.
