Dawkins a Surprise Guest in War Room

April 24th, 2012 - 11:31am by Gray Caldwell

On Tuesday, the Broncos war room got a surprise visitor — recently retired safety Brian Dawkins.

Dawkins entered the room to thank everyone in it for the opportunity to play in Denver, and there were lots of smiles, hugs, laughs and some heartfelt interaction.

Before he left the room, however, Owner/CEO Pat Bowlen, Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway, Head Coach John Fox, General Manager Brian Xanders and the rest of the war room had a surprise for Dawkins as well.

The group presented him with a framed No. 20 jersey, which Dawkins said he truly appreciated.

Dawkins is expected to meet the media at approximately noon MDT today, and DenverBroncos.com will have more coverage of his visit to Dove Valley this afternoon.

Im trying to set up a blog community mock draft to start tonight and finish before draft tomorrow.

So If anyone is interest (need at least 6 more people) please just name the division you want. If your going to partake please make sure you will be able to be on 6pm blog time the night of the 25. Hopefully we can get it done tomorrow night but if we dont then make sure you can be on Noon Thursday if you have a pick then. I hope to be done before 5 pm blog time (hour before draft starts).

To make your pick you put Round 1 Pick 1 Team selects Player Position School
then description. Like in the draft you have 10 minutes to make the pick and type it all up. No trades. If after 10 minutes and a 5 minute grace period (So basically you have 15 minutes to make your pick) then the pick is forfeit and it goes to the next pick. Also after your description you have to add the previous picks. Just the picks not the descriptions. So only description should be yours for your pick.

Between picks you can offer your thoughts on the pick. I would prefer no arguing for it as we will be the “GMs” for the teams but would be nice to hear the opinions of the picks.

I hope to get enough people interested to do it. I know its late but next year I will set it up earlier. I think it will be a fun time and get to hear others thoughts on all the picks.

It wont take place on the newest blog. it will take place on the blog Rice Takes: Previewing QBs and DBs.

If all divisions are taken up and we have more than one wanting a division then the teams will be split evenly.

To decide who takes the AFC west i will have all those interested choose a # between 1 and 100. Closet one WITHOUT going over wins. If three people are interested then each will get one team.

If you have any questions ask away. I will post this again later in the day. And will post the rules for making your picks before it starts.

So again if you are interest please just say the division you want. I will write down who has what division and all the picks then post draft night Thursday i will do a side by side comparison. (Wont be 100% I know)

NFL teams were informed this week of 2 more players of note who have flunked drug tests: ASU LB Vontaze Burfict and Va Tech CB JayRon Hosley

  3. DenverCB says:

AB, that 31′st pick is a little rediculous… I do enjoy the Martin pickup at 25!!!

  4. broncosfreak30 says:

Honestly, I would even love to take Fleener at #25. Sure we just signed two tight ends. Put Dressen in for blocking purposes and Tamme and Fleener on passing situations!!

Fleener is the best TE I’ve seen since Jimmy Graham whom I think he will even be better than Graham.

Before anyone throws fits at this, just think about this! The patriots have two absolutely great pass catching TE’s. We play them again this year. I say take Fleener if available at #25 and show the Pats what it feels like for a TE to pick apart a defense!! Bitter Sweet Revenge!

Then in round 2 take your DT/LB and round 3 whichever position of the two from DT/LB we didn’t take in round 2. Then round 4 get a WR and a C/DT/CB. Round 5 take Derek Carrier. Round 6 take Ron Brooks if he is there.

  5. broncosfreak30 says:

    The vid on Fleener.

You have to give Peyton a few go to guys. He trusts Tamme and I believe Fleener will be better than Hernandez and is faster than Gronkowski!

  6. DenverCB says:

I do like having lots of TE’s but I dont think we need another one, however Fleener would be an instant help but Martin is someone who we could use more and get more out of. Carrier in the 5th sound fine to me.

  7. Orange27Crusher says:

I like Doug Martin as a person and a player. I am a huge Boise State fan and I have to admit that I was really upset when Denver Picked Ryan Clady from there a few years ago. HOWEVER, he turned out to be a GREAT PLAYER at LT. I feel the same about Doug Martin = I really don’t want Denver to get him because I think there are better players . . .

THAT BEING SAID – MARTIN is a GYMN RAT and will work his backside off where ever he goes! I worry he is too little to compete in the NFL, but in college he did everything from being a true FEATURED BACK to returning kicks (for touchdowns – VEGAS BOWL opening kick off). He is one of those rare player that actually switched positions like TD did in college.

I like the man as a player and where ever he goes I will root for his success. HOWEVER, I think my Denver Broncos would do better with a Defensive player!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    “D” in 2012

    GO BRONCOS!!! 8)

  8. broncosfreak30 says:

Actually I respectfully disagree. If you look at the contributions that Rob and Aaron made for the Pats, the TE position can help better than a RB position.

I mean just think about this. Peyton has NEVER had a good rushing offense. He always had TE’s in there a lot that he heavily relied on. Fleener would cause DRASTIC mismatches for defenses!

Just watch this prime example against Notre Dame. He’s all over the field and the defense doesn’t know what to do!

  10. Broncos LAX says:

AB I’ll take the AFC West lol but if its not given away easily I have backup plans

  11. broncosfreak30 says:

Fleener ran a 4.45 as a 247 pound 6-6 TE. That is absolute elite speed. I really wanted Ruldolph a couple of years ago. Now we have the chance to get someone even better! I think about it, Fleener will most likely be the best talent at #25! He is the #1 TE and is an absolute catching machine!!

  12. buck484 says:

I am a big Martin fan as witnessed through all my posts. I think he has great skills but IMO even better character. No prima donna here just a hard working player that only gets better.

  13. alaskanbronco06 says:

LAX the AFC West is the last one im giving away. I wanna see who all is interested in it first and if i can get someone for the other divisions.

O27C Im 2 hours behind blog time. Any posts from 10 blog time to 6 blog time im actually working.

  14. alaskanbronco06 says:

LAX I do have you marked down being interested though.

  15. Broncos LAX says:

K arew we setting this up for today? Because I work tomorrow and am off today. BF30 you should participate and AB you should tweet SW about it I’m sure he’d love to

  16. broncosfreak30 says:

Mark my words, if we take Fleener, he would make us one of the most potent passing offenses in the league. We would be right there with the Patriots. We already have a better defense than the Pats and they went to the super bowl last year. Add a DT in the 2nd and maybe another in the 3rd or a LB.

Fleener is my new pick for #25!!

Plus there are several mocks that project him going to us!

  17. broncosfreak30 says:

    Sure, I guess I’ll participate!

  18. alaskanbronco06 says:

LAX Im hoping to get it all done tonight. I want to start it about 6 blog time and get it done as fast as possible. I thought there would be a little more interest in it than theres been.

  19. Broncos LAX says:

Don’t gues haha you can take fleener with one of your 4 teams!

  20. alaskanbronco06 says:

Ok Freak what division you want?

  21. Broncos LAX says:

AB can you email me a big board if you have one?

  22. broncosfreak30 says:

Here is Fleeners sports science vid. Crazy!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mXJ3_C78n8

  23. alaskanbronco06 says:

LAX I dont have a big board. All I did was do some research and kinda set up my own boards for the teams in the AFC south.

  24. DenverCB says:

Freak, very valid points and good ones if i may add, but i just say that because we picked 2 up in free agency and already have 2-3 on our roster, im not ready to give up on our rookies from last year. With Manning our TE’s could really take off in production, Especially with Manning knowing how to check the ball down.

  25. broncosfreak30 says:

Gronkowski ran a 4.75 and didn’t participate in vertical and 23 bench reps.

Fleener ran a 4.45. 37 inch vertical and 27 bench reps!

His weakness is blocking but that is why we have Joel Dressen. We need to get this guy.

Manning having targets like Fleener, Deck, Thomas, Tamme, Willis, Caldwell…that is scary and is by far a top 5 offense!!

  26. broncosfreak30 says:

Yea, I was just stating that he would probably the the best player available at our position.

Elway states that we are win now mode and adding Fleener wouldn’t have to make us wait for a year or two with our other rookie TE’s.

Look at this. Manning had two great pass catching TE’s with Clark and Tamme. We already have Tamme. Time to add the “Clark” TE and take the best TE in the draft.

I understand what you are saying by saying that we have bigger needs. But going on talent, Fleener would be the pick. We are high on Turbin who we can get later. Already said that DT most likely wouldn’t be the pick and there will be A LOT of good ones in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. This team wants to win NOW.

As much as I love Martin, Fleener would have a bigger impact than Martin would in my opinion. We will be passing more anyways instead of running.

    Making my new mock now!

    Draft!

  29. alaskanbronco06 says:

Freak what division do you want for the blog community mock draft?

  30. Orange27Crusher says:

    alaskanbronco06,

hahahahaha – I am actually at work too! You are two hours different than Mountain Time. What is your time zone called??? I am in the Pacific PTZ (Nevada).

  31. DenverCB says:

It would be nice if somehow we came down with Decastro as well. He looks like he could be a starter for years to come. I dont see how he would fall that far but id take him if he was available.

  32. DenverCB says:

What time are you doing this mock draft AB?

  33. alaskanbronco06 says:

    O27C Alaskan Time zone.

  34. alaskanbronco06 says:

Per a league source, Atlanta has agreed to terms on a 3-year, $18.5M deal for Asante Samuel. So trade will likely go through soon.

  35. Orange27Crusher says:

    Alright BLOG QUESTION???

They say Denver would like to move “up or down” and would preffer to move “down”. It used to be “forward or back”. If you move “DOWN” are you getting a lower number/earlier pick, or are you dropping back to a later pick???

Why can’t they just keep it the same year in and year out???

  39. BleednOrange14 says:

AB, we are doing a mock draft?

  40. broncosfreak30 says:

1 (25) Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford (Or trade up and get Luke)
    2 (57) Worthy/Reyes/Wolfe/Irvin
    3 (87) Winn/Jared Crick/Cam Johnson/Markelle Martin/Mike Martin
    4 (108) Turbin/T.Y. Hilton
    4 (120) Brandon Hardin
    5 (137) Ron Brooks
6 (188) Kellen Moore, David Molk

  41. alaskanbronco06 says:

BNO14, Im trying to set up a bloggers mock draft. So far theres four people only two have unassigned divisions. So I need at least 4 more people.

  42. DenverCB says:

I wont be able to participate :( im off work at 6 (Blog Time) ….. i blog at work haha

  43. broncosfreak30 says:

    I am with you Orange!!

I want that more than anything else. If not, then Fleener!

The Chiefs already have a good defense. Adding Luke will make things absolutely scary for us!!

Either move up and solidify our linebacking corps making them the top in the division or get Fleener. Don’t care which you pick. Just do one of them!

  44. alaskanbronco06 says:

    Lol CB. That sucks.

I need at least four more people.

  45. BleednOrange14 says:

i have read that Melvin Ingram has a chance to fall out of the top 13. If he gets past Seattle, then we need to get a trade with Arizona to jump ahead of the Eagles and select him. He can play ILB, OLB, DE, AND DT. Him, Doom, AND Miller rushing the passer, wowwee!!!! And Miller is also very high on him. He thinks Ingram can do a little more than Miller can. If Ingram is better than Miller, then the pass rush from Miller, Doom, and Ingram would be better than the pass rush of the New York Giants.

  46. BleednOrange14 says:

    ab, what divisions are left?
