Cutler AFC Offensive Player of the Month

October 1st, 2008 - 3:52pm by Adam Zinser

Jay Cutler will be named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Cutler’s selection as AFC Offensive Player of the Month is the first such award of his three-year career. It marks the first time in seven seasons that a Bronco has received AFC Offensive Player of the Month with quarterback Brian Griese earning that honor for his performance in September of 2001.

Through the first four games of 2008, Cutler has completed 102-of-157 passes for 1,275 yards and nine touchdowns to four interceptions, earning him a passer rating of 98.6. His passing yards and completions lead the AFC and rank him second in the NFL while his nine touchdowns rank third in the league.

Cutler’s selection as AFC Offensive Player of the Month marks the 10th time a Bronco has earned that award since it was initiated by the NFL in 1986. He is the third Denver quarterback to receive the award, joining Griese and John Elway, who won it in October 1996 and November 1997.

    This is so AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    YAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

FI-NA-LLY, he got something he totally deserves. He’s turning into an incredible QB for this team and organization. I’m so happy for him and finally I can calm my frustration. I’ve been dying for him to get recognized for something he does right and this is well deserved.

Keep it coming Cutler. You ARE the future of this team and I am so excited. This just made my day. Slowly but surely, Cutler is following in a certain someone’s footsteps and it is such a relief that we might have actually caught a break after 8 years of driving me nuts with trying to find someone who has what it takes to get as a person can get to filling #7′s shoes… which we all know is impossible but Cutler comes VERY close.

    GO CUTLER, YOU’RE #1 BABY!!!!!!!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Denver Fan in NY State says:

Gotta love that Cutler! Been following him since his debut game that I was very lucky to attend. He’s the real deal!

  6. BroncosRockdaRockies says:

Congrat’s Jay very well deseved and to be 1 of 3 of Denvers QB’s to get it is Awesome! And I see the other QB that recieved it is a QB we will be facing this week against Tampa. So WOW what better time to recieve the Honor WTGGGGGGGG!!!!!!! Keep up the Good Work to all Broncos We are very proud Fans and we all know that WE CAN ADAPT AND OVERCOME IF WE JUST WORK TOGETHER!!!!!!!! GOOOOOOOOOOOOO BRONCOSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!:)

  7. BroncoXXX#24 says:

Man we could start 3-2 against Tampa Bay if our D-line cant create some pressure against the QB. Having Dewayne Robertson and Elvis Dumervil doesn’t cut it. Plus our secondary is not playing so well we need some turnovers there. If we can create pressure, then the QB will make mistakes. Other teams just throw it to Dre’s side, and of course Bly is almost always playing man to man sometimes cover 2. The whole D needs to be physical. Now we also need to pick up on our running game, we need to cause more 3 and outs to the opposing offense. I think we also need to be successful on red zones.

I remember seeing him play for Vandy when they beat Tennessee for the first time in 20 yrs. He showed he was a clutch player bringing his team back to win! I was so excited to see us move up during the draft to get him with the 11th pick two years ago! He truly deserves this award for the month of September !! Congratulations Jay!

  9. 57Yellow T-Bird says:

Are you kidding me? What a joke! The rest of the qb’s in the NFL must be really sorry for Cutler to win such a bogus award. Who cares how good anyone plays during the first month anyhow? You people need to get your heads out of the clouds concerning Cutler. Yes he’s good, but he’s not that good…yet. He’s been very lucky that he hasn’t been picked off alot more than he has. Check out this url and then tell me he’s really all that: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3617727 Cutler is exposed for what he’s really been doing; forcing balls into tight coverage and getting lucky (as if I really believed in luck).

Of course a decent running game would help him out tremendously, not to mention some real support from the defense and special teams. Personally I think Shanahan ought to run the crap out of these guys all week long, week in and week out; in full pads nonetheless. Piss off a few of them, and maybe they’ll get hungry enough to knock off some heads!

  10. 07elway says:

57Yellow T-Bird… SHUT UP AND GO BACK TO WHEREVER YOU CAME FROM!!!!!!!!!

THIS IS BRONCOS TERRITORY, If you can’t apprecitate or even recognize what this award says about a person, clearly you know nothing. And it is definitely clear you are in no way shape or form a Bronco fan so go back to living in a very deep hole in the ground. You’re not welcome here… and neither is your very BOGUS comment. Cutler is very good at what he does… good enough to FINALLY be shown some appreciation for doing his part on the team and he’s FINALLY awarded for doing a job VERY well done.

And by the way…. you’re the joke!!

    GO BRONCOS… AND CUTLER!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. bronc fan in WA says:

57Yellow T-Bird might actually be retarded…… At least he seems like it the way he is bashing one of the best QB’s in the league right now on his own teams website. Don’t you have something better to do T-Bird? Go outside and find a life if you still have the chance.

  12. 57Yellow T-Bird says:

OK, maybe I overstated it a bit…….ok, maybe alot. I apologize for my emotional outburst. I’m just really frustrated because I see Cutler forcing passes that barely make it into the receiver’s hands. I’m also frustrated that it’s almost always Marshall. You need to spread the ball around and not get so zoned in on just one receiver, no matter how good he is. I’ve been a Broncos fan for over 30 years, but like I said, I get frustrated at times. I’m sure many of you are the same way too.

I’ll also admit and agree that Cutler deserves the award, but I wish they would wait until at least mid-season before they start giving out awards. No, this isn’t some type of suck-up, I’m just man enough to say that I should’ve kept my mouth shut. Especially when frustrated.

  13. HOGblog says:

57Yellow T-Bird… SHUT UP AND GO BACK TO WHEREVER YOU CAME FROM!!!!!!!!!

Go back into your RED coma! So you freaks in KC got one over. Isnt it about time? I mean to go a year without a win must be incredibly hard to stomach. Secondly, to watch your evolving door QB situation must be even more painful, especially when you look West and see the emergence of the next great QB. And to think, you drafted Brodie Croyle??? OMG, according to Herm “Thats why we play the game” Edwards, “What were you thinking”? Or were you?

  14. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

So Cutler makes some bad throws from time to time, 57YellowT-Bird, he’s so much better than Jake Plummer and that’s precisely why we’ll win a championship, hopefully championships, with Jay Cutler. He is the next great signal-caller in the league and he will lead the Broncos to great heights both this season and in years to come. Oh yes, Yellow T-Bird, it’s also important to remember that Eddie Royal is also becoming a prime target for Jay, not just Brandon Marshall. Stokley also gets his.

  15. Hesky says:

Well deserved. He utilises all of his offensive weapons to the best of his ability. Hopefully not the last thing he wins this season :)

It only seems like yesterday he was getting his first career start against the Seahawks; look how far he’s come.

    Go Broncos!

  16. GO CUTLER says:

I THINK I TOLD YOU GUYS LAST YEAR JAY IS A WINNER I WATCHED HIM PLAY IN HIGH SCHOOL. IM PROUD TO BE A CUTLER FAN AS WELL AS A BRONCOS FAN . HE WILL ONLY GET BETTER WHEN THE RUNNING GAME CLICKS. GO BRONCOS

  17. May25 says:

BroncoXXX, your post has absolutely NOTHING to do with this blog! If you want to gripe like that at least do it on a blog about how the team is playing, not one that is congratulating a player on an award!

    Congrats Jay!

  18. j_merten5 says:

My friends don’t agree with me when I suggest Cutler is one of the best QB’s in the NFL. But now you can’t argue against it. Cutler will become great, just has to work on switching it around to different recievers a little more – though Brandon Marshall is insane! Congrats, Jay! xD GO BRONCOS! 4-1

  19. broncomesa says:

    Well, enough about 57yellowbelly-tweedybird,

    Way to go Jay!
I’m positive this will not be your last award this season. Yes, you make some unnessesary Favre-esqe turnovers from time to time, but, I know that you study the game film and snapshots to hard to correct this.
    Thanks for your leadership bro.
    I smell 4-1.

  20. 2champ4pickSIX says:

That guys doesn’t deserve to own a T-Bird! Disgrace to a great old car, sell that thing and the computer you used to get on here and gripe against an award thats been around longer than you’ve been alive. 30 year fan of what, a 30 year retirement plan? Don’t be a fool, stay in school! Graduate from D.A.R.E. cuz I have a feeling you’ll need that advice with the direction your crimson red KC team is going!
Well deserved award for Jay, just a confidence booster for him to realize he got it despite some “farve-esqe turnovers.” Did you see how determined he was with the snap shots after that second pick in KC guys?! I was so happy then, I knew 2 things, 1 he would come back harder. 2 even if we lost (which we did) tampa was going to get some!
Oh and that link tweety posted, more or less says the DENVER DEFENSE puts pressure on Cutler. Our defense will come around and when it does, Cutler will just continue to sky rocket! All the QB collumists for sports will be like Rivers, Rogers WHO?

  21. baileythebronco says:

Cutler hasnt even played his best ball i think the end of the season he’ll have 51 touchdowns and 9 ints with 4000 yards that would put every quarterback in history away

  22. baileythebronco says:

we should of went 16 and 0 too

  23. #80fan says:

GO CUTLER that makes two of us because I got to see him play in high school too.

  24. RNST says:

The next Sunday the Broncos are going to lose against the Bucs, and the wonderful defense of the Broncos will be displayed as the worst in the NFL,
is the beginning of 6 victories and 10 defeats in 2008,
and another year full of mediocrity and nothing happens,
because we are tired of hearing the excuse of Shanahan and not do anything about it

  25. GO CUTLER says:

RNST LETS MAKE A DEAL WHEN WE BEAT THE BUCS SUNDAY TRY TO BE POSITIVE INSTEAD OF NEGATIVE. GO BRONCOS

  26. ocrush4ever says:

I like pie. Go, Cut! Go!

  27. baileythebronco says:

i wish they could kick dumbass people like rnst ans yellow bird off here. they know nothing about football and they are not fans. they are fat guys that could never throw a ball or play sports so they try to talk trash about proffesionals. jay cutler is one of the best if not the best quarterback in football and its only his 3rd year. tom bradys numbers are gonna look silly compared to cutlers and yellow bird will be eating his own #$%@. and rnst if you knew anything about football its any given sunday, who cares about losing one game every team loses game what matters is that were in the post season, 16 games rnst learn some respect you pansys, go broncos 14 and 2 would be sick 13 and 3 hell 12 and 4 is excellent just get er done
