Cutler Named AFC Offensive Player of the Week

November 11th, 2008 - 6:10pm by Jake Grilley

On Tuesday the NFL informed the Broncos that Jay Cutler will be named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week, for his performance against Cleveland in Week 10.

Cutler’s selection as AFC Offensive Player of the Week is the first such award of his three-year NFL career. It marks his second league-issued honor this season—He was named AFC Offensive Player of the Month for September.

During the Broncos’ 34-30 win at Cleveland on Thursday night, Cutler tied for the third-highest single-game passing yardage total in Denver history and registered his fifth-career fourth-quarter comeback. He helped Denver overcome a 23-13 deficit in the fourth quarter and finished the game completing 24-of-42 passes for 447 yards with three touchdowns and one interception for a 107.9 passer rating.

Cutler is the second Bronco to be named AFC Offensive Player of the Week this year. Brandon Marshall received the award for his performance in Week 2.

He is the first Denver quarterback to receive the award since Jake Plummer in 2005.

Cutler’s selection marks the 43rd time a Broncos player has received AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors since the award was initiated by the NFL in 1984.

  15. rustycletis says:

I am a HUGE Jay Cutler fan. I think he has the potential to be a top 2 QB in this league. However, am I the only person who watched that game against the Browns?
Cutler threw for a lot of yards on a very poor secondary. More than that, he should have had at least 3 or 4 interceptions instead of 1. I like Jay, but lately he has been making some poor throwing decisions.
Do you all remember the horrible pass the was dropped by McDonald that should have been a pick or pick 6? We were real lucky when Eddie Royal hit him over the head to prevent the pick. He also threw another horrible pass to Scheffler in the endzoze where he threw across his body to a covered Scheffler. Tony had to tackle the guy and take an interference call to prevent another pick and possibly another pick 6 because nobody was on that side of the field.
He threw another ball sometime in the game that went right threw a linebackers hands.
Last, the ball that Nate Jackson made a fantastic catch on could have been another pick. Credit Nate for his play, but the defenders had position and should have made that play.

My point is simple. We had some very fortunate plays in that game Thursday. Everyone is talking Jay up because his numbers were good. But if these CBs and LBs would have made the plays they should have, people would be talking about how stupid his decision making has been lately. The beginning of the season was great. He was making smart decisions, but lately that is not the case. I don’t know if he is pressing, but he has made some really poor decisions lately. He has talent, but I wish he would just throw the ball away more instead of always trying to make a great play. We got real lucky. If this were a good team, we could easily be sitting here upset talking about a 5 interception game.

  16. wormyblackburny says:

    rustycletis:

Gotta agree with you there. That miracle dive by Hillis on 4th and 1, was almost stopped because B-Marsh did a lackluster job of blocking his guy. Cleveland did everything BUT win that game. We TRIED to give away the game to them several times, luckily they wouldn’t take the gifts.

  17. royalbroncofan1 says:

Jay is doing the best he can and unless you’ve played the game, it’s easy to say “they could have had this many picks” or “we got lucky”. That’s all irrelevant at this point… bottom line – WE WON THE GAME! Jay is very very competative and has a never say die attitude ! That’s what going to make him a great QB in this league.

  18. Detroit Reggie says:

Thank you rustycletis, very well said, a throw away is much better than a INT,

Cutler might be good one day, but the way he plays you are going to need a great defense to help you win because of Jay Turnover INTS

  19. broncofannsd says:

Hey look everyone…Detroit, I have nothing better to do than hate on Cutler and the Broncos, Reggie crawled out of his freaking hole to spread his negativity.

Well said royalbroncofan1. Without Jay and his never say die attitude, we wouldn’t have won that game. Let us not forget that all the pressure is put on Jay since we don’t have a running game. Jay’s numbers are just as good, if not better, than Elway’s were his first 3 seasons in the league. And this is only Cutler’s 2nd full season. I would rather have a QB that always tries to make the play instead of a “oh s**t” throw the ball away Elvis Grbac. The Giants wouldn’t have won the SB last year if Eli didn’t throw that pass to David Tyree which could have easily been intercepted. Just like the ball to Nate Jackson that rustycletis points out. Eli gave Tyree a chance to make a play just like Jay gave Nate a chance to make a play and guess what, he did.

It’s easy to sit on your cozy chair at home and criticize.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  20. samoanbronco says:

No suprise there! Nice work Cutler! I like the aggressiveness of his play which showed in the first 3 games of the season and again in Cleveland. Do not hide that gun slinging arm of yours with WR like Marshall, Royal, Stokes, Scheffy and now CJ you have the weapons to drive this team to the post season!!! Good luck boys lets prove that Thursday was not a one off!!! WAY TO GO BRONCOS WAY TO GO!!!!

  21. 2champ4pickSIX says:

I think Detroit Reggie has more than one account and he got on the other one to start the negativity to be able to crawl out of his hole and comment as himself again!
Stop looking at the negatives, and saying if they would have made this play or that play. The FACT is they didn’t, you can’t put that all on that player, you give it to Sheff for making a heads up play, and Royal too. Ya they were passes that he shouldn’t have thrown, but can you blame the guy? I mean he has the confidence of no one else, he has an arm of no one else, and he has great receivers at all WR positions, TE positions, FB positions, and now RB positions. He did not have a RB in the majority of that game, and what did he do? HE PUT THE TEAM ON HIS BACK AND BROUGHT YOU HOME A W CAKE! Then you have the nerve to say he could have thrown 5 interceptions!
Great point there broncofannsd, a throw in the SUPERBOWL that should not have been made, but it was and it was spectacular. As much as I hate Eli…. There comes a time when maybe no one is open, but you get a small window and YOU HAVE TO MAKE A PLAY! But like Derek Andersen said, you CAN NOT MAKE THEM CATCH IT! So Cutler did what he could, put the ball in most cases where his receiver could go and MAKE A PLAY, and they did just that! So praise both sides, not bash them, OR GO BACK TO YOUR BROWNIES SITE AND RAMBLE ON THE WHAT IF OUR DB PICKED THAT, HE SHOULD HAVE! Those what if’s are not welcome here!
Also it doesn’t matter how bad their secondary is, because we did not have any running backs, so it’s not like we were trying to trick them, they dropped everyone back, and we still lit them up. Doesn’t matter if your Peyton Manning, having 4-5 receivers to catch the ball v.s. 7 defenders is never an easy task, no matter who is the defender!
Don’t make the comparison to our defense dropping everyone back either! Because the huge difference is that the teams offense against our defense when we have done that, COULD STILL RUN THE BALL!
I do agree with Marshall’s lackluster block on the Hillis carry for 4th and 1. That was easily a 15 yard run by Hillis, but Marshall half hearted a block and nearly cost us the game. Hillis is a trooper and fired up his own train to chug for that first with someone on his back!
    WELL DESERVED JAY! WELL DESERVED!

  22. GO CUTLER says:

way to go jay just keep playing hard anytime you get eddie one on one let it fly he will make the catch he has the best hands on the team a close second is hillis i believe in these two rookies. jay congrats you are the leader and in sw indiana we are very proud of you. go broncos

  23. Detroit Reggie says:

broncofannsd, I do not hate on the Broncos, just Jay turnover Cutler.

  24. broncofannsd says:

Jay is going to be the face of this franchise just like Elway. If you hate on Cutler, then you are hating on the Broncos. It’s a team sport. If you want to hate on anyone, hate on cry baby Rivers and the stupid freaking Chargers. Stop sharing your negative BS comments with the rest of us because no one agrees with you. Only people that lack self confidence hate on other people. You can’t do what he does, so instead of supporting this team and the players, you just spread hate and negativity.

  25. wormyblackburny says:

“Jay is going to be the face of this franchise just like Elway. If you hate on Cutler, then you are hating on the Broncos.”

As I recall Griese and Jake were going to be the new faces of the Broncos, too. Right now, Cutler isn’t even as good as Plummer was, so lets not crown him just yet. Let’s see if he can even GET us to the playoffs (at least Griese and Jake have), much less WIN a playoff game before everyone starts falling all over themselves about #6. Until that time comes, he is just a young QB that keeps losing games for us with his mistakes. I see potential, but I am sick of his smug little attitude in post game press conferences after he helped lose a game for us. None of it seems like a big deal to him. Guess what Jay: You are a 3rd year QB with a career losing record! Manning and Brady have earned the right to act like that (although you never see them do it), YOU haven’t. Start ACTING like a leader on this team and take your job seriously. Talent is NOTHING without the drive to be the best.

  26. 07elway says:

Well well well, if it isn’t Detroit “Mr. I’m jealous of Cutler because he’s not the QB of my 0-9 team up in Michigan” Reggie. Go back to your deep dark a million feet under the ground hole because like broncofannsd said, you hate on Cutler you are hating on the Broncos. Cutler is a part of this team in case you haven’t noticed and you come after him you’re going after the entire team. And what in the world did Cutler ever do to you that made you dislike him so much?? Honey, you couldn’t be more jealous but of course you won’t admit that but you know it is SOOOOO true!!!

And I, for one, NEVER thought Griese or Plummer would be the face of this team. And wormyblackburny – go be a worm and go live in the same hole as your Lions fan up there. You two are unreal. You obviously did NOT watch the game against the Browns – if it weren’t for Jay’s leadership in the 2nd half to get the TEAM together we would have never won that game.
And here we go again – IT IS NOT ALL JAY’S FAULT IF WE LOSE A GAME AND IT IS NOT ALL HIS FAULT IF WE WIN A GAME — ITS A TEAM EFFORT, DUDE!!!!!!!!! I don’t know what planet you’ve been living on but we WON a game on Thursday – just shut your little trap till the official end of the season and we’ll see if there’s anything for us to complain about. Seriously go be a Chiefs fan – they could use one more fan to add to their fan population of like nothing!!

And Jay Cutler IS the face of this franchise for many many years to come. I’d love to see you Detroit Reggie and wormyblackburny do better than Cutler – oh wait there’s absolutely ZERO talent between the two of you other than complaining… oh yeah I can see a victory with you two in his place. You two don’t even deserve to be put in the same sentence as Cutler… he’s got more class and respect than you would even know what to do with. Seriously, if you think he’s so bad go take over his job – do you even know how to hold a football??

Keep up the GREAT work Jay… shut these two turds up, Please!!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  27. broncofannsd says:

“I see potential, but I am sick of his smug little attitude in post game press conferences after he helped lose a game for us.”

Are you freaking kidding me? You and Detroit Reggie must be long lost lovers. Do you know how much pressure is put on a NFL QB? How about being a QB for a franchise that had Elway, who is a living icon in Denver? Try not to overlook the fact that the guy played a half season with undiagnosed type 1 diabetes. He is a role model for little kids and does good in the community, yet you hate on him and spread your negativity BS. Jay has some maturing to do, but all of us go through that…the only difference is he is in the spot light and you’re not. We are a young team, and B Marsh’s silly “glove celebration” is a perfect example of that…thankfully a veteran stepped up and kept him from getting a penalty. And saying Plummer or Griese was better is a joke. How many years was Plummer in the league before coming to Denver? Besides the win against New England, we couldn’t even get past the wild card games with Griese and Plummer. We got our butts kicked in those games. Making it to the wild card game and getting our butts kicked is nothing to brag about. We ALWAYS have a chance to win with Jay, which couldn’t be said for Griese or Plummer. And it’s a team sport. Jay doesn’t lose the game for us. That’s like saying saying Champ Bailey is the only reason we won that playoff game in 2005 or TD is the only reason we won the SB.

    Great blog 07elway.

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  28. broncfan21 says:

this is REDICULOUS!!! first off congrats jay all true denver fans are extatic over the preformance you put on thursday. uh rustyceltis what are you talkin about cutler could have done this, cutler could have done that blah blah blah. you wern’t the only one who watched the game i saw it too and i have a few different views than you. Cutler did have a few throws get away from him no one is going to deny that, but Cutler still threw for over 200yds and 3Td’s in the 4th quarter alone. when was the last time you saw any Denver QB do that??? Also this week will mark 2 full seasons starting for Jay. So just looking at the facts Jay is doing everything as well as a 2 year starter could. Another thing at the start of the season the Broncos wern’t supposed to be a tough team…..you can thank Jay for making teams think twice now.

And whats with sayin the Browns secondary is weak? C’mon it wasn’t a secret what we were going to do all day……PASS. Idk if you follow the rest of the league but he Browns handed the Giants there only loss of the season so far and with the giants running game and everything that secondary was able to pick-off Eli 3 times one of which was a pick-6.

Last the Broncos are struggling more with injuries than any team in the league. all of our 5 running backs are out 4 being on IR, none of our starting line backers are playing, and 2 of our 4 players in the secondary are out. The healthiest position right now is WR and we arn’t even 100% there. With all the injuries we have right now its a wonder how we are still competitive. This is just a small sign of how much heart this team has. lets just hope that Jay provided the spark last week that our offense needs to become as dominant as they were the first three weeks of the season

GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!! Lets hand ATL their first loss at home this week

  29. Cutlercountry08 says:

    JAY FOR MVP!!!! Nuff said

  30. YoungGuns says:

Ok, I’m tired of people bad mouthing Jay for his “could have been” ints. Ok so for us that played football, know that every quarterback every game has a few balls that could have been picked. Thats why db’s are on defense, because they can’t catch. Also its the receivers job, if he can’t get to the ball, to knock it down. Eddie Royal did nothing special against the Browns when he played defense on that one play. Thats his job. Now I do know Jay has made some bad decisions this year. This is his third year in the league!. Cut some slack. He is also the third ranked quarterback in the league right now. And he’s doing all of this with no running game. Watch the games. They don’t respect the run game at all. They always drop five in coverage, or play the tampa two which is very difficult to pass against. Teams are giving Jay all they’ve got and he is still winning games with only the help of his o line and receivers.

And by the way, Dre’ you came up huge big man. I saw him several times lower a shoulder and hit someone. not to mention that game changing strip. Best and toughest I have ever seen you play in a Broncos jersey. Thats how you play defense!

  31. Denver Fan in NY State says:

Here’s what one woman in Central NY thinks – Thank God for Jay Cutler – he is the real deal! Brains and brawn. I’m hoping he goes to the ProBowl since I’m going to be there anyway. If he keeps playing like he did against Cleveland there might be an excellent chance of that.

Can you imagine what he could accomplish if the rest of the team was as in great a form as he is? They’d be unstoppable – let’s all hope they get there.
