Cowboys vs. Broncos: First Quarter Notes

August 16th, 2008 - 7:06pm by Gray Caldwell

15:00: The Cowboys won the toss and deferred — a new rule for this season — and the Broncos will receive to start the game.

14:53: Josh Barrett limped off the field after he was shaken up on the kickoff return.

14:53: After a 32-yard Andre Hall return, Cutler pitches the ball out to Selvin Young for a gain to the right side. Flag on the play — holding on the offense. That brings up 1st-and-20.

14:45: Play-action pass to Marshall for a solid gain that brings up 2nd-and-8.

13:51: Cutler drops back, lets it fly to the right side and Eddie Royal has found a hole in the defense. He makes a 35-yard reception to set up the ball at the 28-yard line.

11:44: Andre Hall takes a big hit from Zach Thomas in the backfield for a loss of one on 2nd down, that brings up 3rd and nine. It’s just been announced that Josh Barrett is “OK” after he limped off the field.

10:54: Brandon Stokley makes a nice grab in the middle of the field and it’s close to a first down. The clock is stopped for measurement. It was just short and it brings up 4th and 1. Andre Hall finds a hole up the right side with some nice blocking from the line and fullback Cecil Sapp. The ball is at the 1-yard line, first and goal for Denver.

10:54: Andre Hall plows forward for the one-yard touchdown and Daniel Graham gives a celebratory fist pump in the air. Matt Prater in for the extra point — and it’s good. Broncos 7, Cowboys 0.

9:43: Prater set to kick off from the 30. He drills it to the front of the endzone, and Isaiah Stanback brings it out for the Cowboys. He’s brought down by Paul Carrington after 35 yards. First and 10 at the 34.

9:36: Just a quick update on the defensive starters: on the line — John Engelberger, Dewayne Robertson, Marcus Thomas and Elvis Dumervil. At linebacker — Jamie Winborn, Niko Koutouvides and D.J. Williams. In the secondary — Dre’ Bly, Domonique Foxworth, Marlon McCree and Marquand Manuel.

8:23 After a couple of short gains the Cowboys have a 3rd and 2. Tony Romo launches it out to the left side to Sam Hurd at the line, and he’s brought backward by Foxworth. There’s a flag on the play. The play was a first down, but unnecessary roughness was called on Dallas’ Marc Colombo. It’s still 1st-and-10 but the ball is back at the Dallas 30.

7:49: Twelve men in the huddle for Dallas, it’s 1st and 15 on the 25. D.J. Williams makes the stop with a solid hit on Marion Barber, gain of a yard.

6:53: Terrell Owens makes his first grab of the game and it brings up 3rd and 4 for the ‘Boys. Romo’s in the shotgun, he drops back and gives it back to Owens on the right side right at the line. The refs give them the spot and it’s a 1st down.

5:10: Barber with a big gain around the right side, knocked out of bounds by McCree. It’s enough for a Dallas first down and they ahve the ball at the Denver 43 with less than 5 minutes to play in the quarter.

4:39: Jamie Winborn gets into the backfield and forces Romo to throw a little early after a fake handoff, and he just overthrows Owens, bringing up 2nd and 10.

4:39: Barber picks up 6 yards and it’s 3rd and 4 at the 37. Romo takes the snap in shotgun, backs up and misreads Owens’ route. 4th and 4 at the 37 and the ‘Boys are going for it. Flags on the play, movement on both sides of the ball, the refs are conferring.

False start. It brings up 4th and 9 on the 42-yard line, and the Cowboys trot out their punter, Mat McBriar. Eddie Royal is back to receive.

3:49: With Denver on their own 10, Cutler pitches to Selvin Young and he makes it just past the 12 yard line. 2nd and 8. False start on Royal on the next play.

2:59: False start again, this time on Tony Scheffler. The Broncos get the play off and Cutler passes to the left to Royal for nine yards. But there’s offensive holding called on the play, it’s brought back.

2:01: Selvin Young takes a draw and gains some decent yardage, but it’s still a long 3rd down. Flag on the play, however — after Young was down there was a personal foul for unnecessary roughness on the defense and it brings up a Denver 1st down on the 28.

0:15: Andre Hall breaks a few tackles and gains a new first down as the quarter comes to an end.

  6. hrdnokd says:

NFL.COM says they had 2 4th downs according to the “count yardage” meter…..hence my play calling rant….nice job guys!@

  7. navy_bronco_fan says:

Well, that was a damn impressive way to start the game. Now, let’s get the DEFENSE going!

COME ON FOXY, you should be SITTIN’ on this stuff!

“The Cowboys won the toss and deferred a new rule this season” ? I don’t think so. The team winning the toss has always been able to defer. The Broncos did it on a Monday Night game against ther Packers in Denver many years ago. It was an absolute blizzard. The Packers chose to receive and on the first play after the Broncos kicked off the Broncos recovered a fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Broncos kicked off, first play Packers fumble and Broncos return it for a touchdown. Score Broncos 14 Packer 0 before the first Broncos offensive play. Final score, Broncos 17, Packers 14.

    ALRIGHT D!

    oldsouthstander –

In the meeting the NFL held during training camp about the new rule changes, they indicated that it’s a new rule to be able to defer to the other team after winning the coin toss. I’ve got to keep watching the game so I don’t have time to research it right now, but I’m pretty positive it’s a new rule. At least that’s the indication the NFL gave.

  12. Gray Caldwell says:

    oldsouthstander –

Jake Grilley looked it up for me, he’s right beside me. We’re both right. Before, you could choose to receive, kick or choose a side to defend. Now in the new rule, you can defer to the other team and make them decide even if you won the toss.

  13. hrdnokd says:

You are correct sir on the “defer”.

  14. navy_bronco_fan says:

These f’n penalties are gonna make me sick.

  15. hrdnokd says:

Alright, Dallas is just starting to take cheap shots now from practice.

  16. navy_bronco_fan says:

Hall is looking good, he just went head to head with Zach Thomas and won!

  17. oldsouthstander says:

Could be the Broncos chose to kick off. I’m positive that they won the toss. Where’s Bob Martin and his fantastic memory when you need him? (Speaking of someone who should be in the Bronco Ring of Fame.) Maybe Larry Zinmmerman will remember the game.

  18. Gray Caldwell says:

    oldsouthstander –

The Broncos did not win the toss. The Cowboys said tails, and it was tails, and deferred to the Broncos.

  19. oldsouthstander says:

I was refering to the Bronco-Packers game, not this game. Sure bugs me that I’m sure what I remember about the coin toss for that game, but, those are some very old tapes.

  20. kndh19 says:

Deferring is a brand new rule this year. They call it the Madden rule because you have always been able to do it on Madden.
