Covering All Their Bases

December 27th, 2012 - 5:15pm by Tyler Everett

The Broncos’ 2012 season has seen the team pile up 12 victories in a number of different ways.

From the furious 21-point comeback win in San Diego that jumpstarted the team’s 10-game winning streak to comfortable victories, Denver has shown the ability to win under various circumstances.

But through it all, one type of win that has eluded the Broncos has been that of the last-second variety. While the team has been pleased that it hasn’t needed dramatic rallies in the closing minutes, it believes experience in such scenarios would be valuable. That’s why Denver does as much as possible in practice to prepare itself for anything that might come its way. But it’s something that Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy admits is difficult to achieve on the practice field.

“I don’t think you can ever really go through the true game situation live,” McCoy said. “It’s hard. With the crowd, if you’re on the road, or at home, or the weather conditions—those things change all the time. The most important thing as a coach is to prepare your players for that. We talk about situational football every day. If this situation comes up, what would we do? On the weekends after you see certain games, as a staff you talk about certain situations in other games and then you try to relay that message to the players. If it is in one of your games, they’re prepared for it.”

Now in his 15th season, quarterback Peyton Manning has seen just about everything the game has to offer. But even with well over a decade’s worth of experience, Manning still looks to spend time in practice leaving no stone unturned.

“You can’t do anything about changing the outcome of the game,” Manning said. “We were down early in some games and came back and closed in some games, got over the hump in some games. So, you’d love to face every scenario, but like I said, you can’t control how each game’s outcome is going to go. You try to simulate game-like scenarios in practice. It’s not quite the same as a game, so that’s something that (Head) Coach (John) Fox and the staff have tried to do all season long.”

“Manuel Ramirez – OG, Denver Broncos

Unlike their fellow teams in the AFC West, the Denver Broncos have had little trouble picking up wins this season and, with MVP candidate Peyton Manning at the helm, are still in with a chance to lock up home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. With Manning on offense and Von Miller on defense, it’s easy for the players around them to get lost in the shuffle. That’s partly true for offensive guard Manuel Ramirez, however part of the reason he doesn’t get many plaudits is because he hasn’t looked that impressive overall this season. Despite this, he turned in his best performance of the year on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns.K

As a pass blocker he finished the game with a perfect Pass Blocking Efficiency (PBE) Rating of 100.0, with absolutely no pressure at all allowed from 47 passing plays. That marked the sixth time this season he has had a perfect PBE Rating, not too surprising considering his struggles have come as a run blocker, but impressive all the same. He had no such struggles in the running game this week however, with his only negatively graded play coming in the form of a false start. His day was highlighted by a nice pull block on Browns linebacker Craig Robertson on 1st-and-10 with 11 seconds left in the opening quarter. It’s been a season of struggles for him as a run blocker, but if he can produce more performances like this in the coming weeks, Denver will be in even greater shape for the playoffs.”

OT – NCAA Cincy/UNM basketball game last night was a great one if that’s what you’re referring to.
The Bearcats have some great shooters, but UNM also has a great squad. Steve Alford has really turned UNM around.
Great finish last night with the Lobos winning by one point.

GO LOBOS, as a NM resident I have to cheer for the Lobos, They are earning the respect that was lacking, until Alford became the coach. He is a great coach and does many things for the community.
