Kory Sperry couldn’t help but chuckle Wednesday morning when asked to recall his range of emotions this week.
The Dolphins released the second-year tight end from Colorado State on Tuesday. A day later, Sperry received a call from his agent telling him he’d been picked up by his hometown team.
Suddenly, the 25-year-old had the chance he’d dreamed of since his childhood growing up in Pueblo, Colo., and rooting on the John Elway-led Broncos.
“It was just a big shocker, man,” Sperry said. “I’ve followed the Broncos a lot, and I’m excited about what they’re doing. At the same time, just being close to my family is going to be fun. It got me real excited.”
Sperry finished his rookie season in Miami with three catches for 31 yards and a touchdown in eight games, including one start. He joins a tight end group that features a veteran he’s always admired, Daniel Graham, and a pair of players he first met at last year’s NFL Combine, Richard Quinn and Marquez Branson.
The 6-foot-4, 238-pound tight end participated in his first walkthrough this morning and will slip on his white No. 45 Broncos jersey for the first time during the team’s practice later today.
Sperry, who has also spent time with San Diego, said he’s not sure if he’ll be ready to contribute in Sunday’s preseason game against the Steelers at INVESCO Field at Mile High. For now, he said he’s focused on “testing the waters,” learning the playbook and getting to know his teammates.
It’s been a whirlwind few days for Sperry. But in joining the team his father, Belden, taught him to love, he couldn’t have asked for a better situation.
Now Sperry said all that’s left for him to do is take advantage of the homecoming opportunity.
“It’s a blessing,” Sperry said. “When one option gets taken away from you, hopefully another one opens up, and it did. It’s one of those things that you can’t let slip by.”

Maybe the only way Stokley makes the cut is because they might make room for him allowing Thomas to heal somewhere other than on the 53 man roster? It better not be at the expense of Willis, that would be a bad mistake in my opinion, here is the latest on Stokley:
Asked Wednesday when injured wide receiver Brandon Stokley (groin) might return to practice, McDaniels said, “Not sure.” Stokley is expected to miss the remainder of the preseason.
BTW, this post and last was reporting by Legwold.
Another note by Legwold, this one of HUGE importance:
The Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets play the Broncos in the first six weeks of the season. Those teams ranked No. 10, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 1 in the NFL in rushing, respectively, in 2009. So the Broncos’ run defense had better be good quickly.
That is some great info there, wow, facing three of the top five teams in rushing in the first six games… not good info for us haha, but great nonetheless, Legwold is the man!
Bottom line is after the sixth game of the season we will know exactly where we stand defensive wise since our achilles heel is against the run!!! ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL start, and it makes me laugh that some here keep pointing to how easy our schedule is, specially at the start, hahaha…. At least we won’t get to fall into complacency after a 6-0 start, LOL. I thought you “easy schedule” folks needed a dose of reality, thanks Legwold for helping out…
A word of caution about expecting Clady to play in the Jacksonville game as reported by Lindsay Jones:
Coaches and players realize that Clady’s return to practice is just another step in his recovery, and there is no guarantee Clady will be fully ready to play by the Sept. 12 season opener at Jacksonville. That date remains a realistic possibility, Clady said. “We’re excited, but at the same time, we’re going to try to be smart and get him back to the point where we feel like he can play at his highest level,” McDaniels said. “And that may not be for a few more weeks.”
Well, you guys are all up to date now in one easy location, your Denver Broncos headquarters, haha.
not sure about this team, and there are some issues that remain to be solved, I think Xanders and McD have done a terrible job of handling the roster. The bad picks not withstanding there are some bigger issues to consider. Tim Tebow. What position is he going to play. If he is teh teams third quarterback he will need to be made active each week if he is going to play. Typical rosters with a third qb, have that third QB inactive or an “emergency” quarterback so that the team can bring the full roster of position players for sundays. If the third qb enters the game, then the 1st and 2nd qb are no longer eligile to enter (in that situation). So let’s say they are going to bump TT up to #2, and make Quinn the 3rd qb. Is TT prepared to step n and plaay on game days if needed? Who knows. If we are making Quinn inactive each week, we again wasted a draft pick in the trade to get him. As far as the injured players go, do you put them on the roster, knowing they will be unable to play, (remember we are going to be down 1 spot for the first four weeks because of Lendale) We only have seven spots, in essence, how are you gonna fill them. especially if you are going to keep an extra QB, and now possibly a WR you drafted injured. The signings being made by this team are head scratchers. Only time will tell though
Good points made vabronco. All i can say is, “glad its not my job” lol. They def have made it as comlicated as they can.
With Barrett gone, we have one more slot open. Cuz he was a keep over for sure, gonna miss him.
Didnt know all that was wrong with stokely, tough, but it looks like the slot king will have to give up his throne. He will be fine tho, he has won like 3 super-bowls with 3 different teams. at this point he is just playing for the love and the fun.
I say sit Clady till we have our first REAL pass rush threat, which will be the colts in week 3 (freeny, Mathis). we havent beat the colts in years. this new team doesn seem up to the task either. this is gonna be a tough year.
And bay bay, just sit him for like 4 weeks, and then let him start practicing agin around week 2/3. no point rushing him back only to rush him right back off. just keeps extendign the time…
ps: one last thing. MAN did Hillis run hard in the second preseason game. Heard about it, but just saw it for my self a few hours ago. He will def be a fan fave again. People just love his hard tough running. to think we lost him for Quinn and because McD hates him. We sure could use him now tho, he will be a beast at FB or HB thats a gaurantee. One of Shanahans products. That man had a nose for the draft. Even in the 7th round. TRB out…
Agree that Demaryius Thomas needs more time for rehab. No need to bring him back too soon. 3 to 4 weeks could be a reasonable time frame if not less.
Darrell Reid will start out on PUP list and according to original timetable, his return should be early October. We’ll have wait see if we hear or read any updates his progress.
LenDale White will also be available for Game #5 during the regular season which will be the Ravens game.
TRB, agreed on Hillis. I don’t know what McD was smoking when he decided to never use Hillis and then trade him. Guess he doesn’t like tough, hard running guys in the back field? IDK All I can say is I hope McD knows something that all of us don’t. Because I am getting sick of the being mediocre. The Chargers are having major issues this year so it seems like its time to bring the AFC west thrown back to where it belongs, in Denver.
Man, I can’t wait for the regular season so we can truely see what kind of team McD and Xanders have put together.
GO BRONCOS….
Oooopps, suppossed to say “sick of the Broncos being mediocre.”
I guess it is like “crying over spilt milk.” But it is a good point and it makes you wonder. I will refrain from passing judgement until regular season gets underway.
Either way, McD has now made Larsen the official Fullback and I still yet seen him have any impact, McD is not exactly running a Fullback friendly O. Like I always said once it was established that McD was not gonna use Hillis after he messed up the start of the first three games last year, the best thing for the kid was to trade him to somewhere he would have a shot, and he does now and I’m happy about it, best of luck to him. If we ever use Larsen, I would think that we will all find out he is no slouch next to Hillis anyway.
I understood the trading of most of our “key” offensive personnel. The Hillis situation I shall never understand. It is what it is. (but that was the one move that started by campaign to fire a certain individual).
Anyway, baylin, last years stats mean squat this season! Trying to stay positive. But stopping the run (something we haven’t seen on a consistent basis since 2005) is a bone of my contention this season!
Get Healthy/Stay Healthy, BRONCOS 2K10!!!!!!!!!!
TRB, Stokely has two rings with two teams.
Yeah agreed, everything last year and in this preseason don’t mean squat. However it would be nice to win one before we start the regular season, since we are now 2-10 aggregate and very possibly could be 2-12 before we start over in Jacksonville, not exactly ideal, no matter how positive anyone wants to be. The Pittsburgh game is no cake walk and the game at Minnesota might even be harder because the Vikings are now a much better team so I would imagine their back ups are way better than ours, and that’s who will play that game. That is why I personally put a fair amount of importance to this game Sunday when many here say it means nothing, it’s just preseason who cares… I do, in this particular instance.
now that you mention it orange and blue, the only teams i can think of off the top of my head that he has rings with are the ravens and colts so dunnow why i said three lol
I personally see it this way, we have very little depth (I know surprising huh?) but after watching the first two games I feel very confident about our starters. we are beaten and bruised but I can honestly say that after watching those games if the starters stayed and played the whole game Denver would be 2-0 in preseason so far. (and yes I understand its only preseason) we went up 14-0 against the bengals before we put our 2s against their 1s. slow start against the lions but Kyle stayed poised and still managed 2 TD passes to bring us within 2. Either way in my mind, with the way the offense looks, I think Denver could have a promising season!
GO BRONCOS 2010!!!

ILMSDB!!!
bay, thanks for the nice comments you made on yesterdays blog…
sndvl, I agree.. I don’t really understand the problem McD had with Hillis?? I saw Hillis’ tallent in the 08 season and could not wait to see him start at Power HB in 09.
Obviously something happened in the coach/player relationship because we all know it wasn’t a tallent issue…
He did get a few chances last year and flubbed them. Maybe he wasn’t giving 100%, like Scheffler?
I thought Scheffler was acting kinda punkish last week. He played like he didn’t care last year but now he is all proud of his tallent. I think maybe there were a few players and coaches who gave up on McD, they’re all gone now…
KEEP THE DRIVE ALIVE BRONCOS!!!!!!!!
ILMSDB!!!!
we will have a winning season!!!
