Checking In with Robert Ayers

May 8th, 2012 - 4:25pm by Stuart Zaas

DenverBroncos.com caught up with defensive lineman Robert Ayers after he finished his workout on Tuesday.

Here’s what he had to say about his 2012 offseason thus far:

On his offseason
“I’ve been here for the most part working out. I’ve traveled a couple places, but for the most part I’ve been here.”

On his travels
“I went to a few places – Jamaica, went to New York for a little bit. Nothing major, but went to a few places.”

On getting back to working out in a team setting
“It’s cool. I like being around the team and starting to learn and work as a unit and starting to get on the same page and working hard. That’s the best part about playing football is being around a team and working out together and getting to have that bond and friendship with one another.”

On the Broncos drafting an interior defensive lineman with their first draft pick
“He’s definitely a very good player and he fits our mold – just from what I’ve watched of him. He seems like he has the type of attitude that we look to have on defense and I think he’ll fit right in.”

On whether the Peyton Manning signing excites him as a defensive player
“Oh definitely. When you know you have a quarterback like that who can put up points and always be consistent and be able to keep you off the field, that’s a great feeling as a defensive player.”

Yeah Nuggets!!! Way to stay alive…. Now only if my beloved Rockies could win a stupid game!!!

  2. alaskanbronco06 says:

My day was good BT still working through the mock draft bets from work. No big winners. Handed out 345$ yesterday. Thats going to be about the highest we hand out with how crazy the draft was.

That was a great game. Havnt seen one that good. Lakers need to get it together. They looked horrible on both side of the ball till the end. Sessions was afraid to shoot. Nuggest just need to find a way to close games. I dont think the Lakers or Nuggest can hold up against the Thunder though.

  3. Bronco_Turtle says:

F the Thunder… Westbrook is my second least favorite player behind Kobe… !!!

The Spurs/Thunder Series should be really good watching

  4. DaddyBronc says:

I agree that Kobe is a fairly useless human being. –

Someone asked if Lakers have any fans. When the Lakers make the playoffs – a third of the cars and a quarter of the houses fly Laker flags out where I live. Rarely do you see Clipper stuff by comparison.

I don’t have time for basketball or baseball much. I limit myself to one sport because I get so addicted I end up being as useless as Kobe all year round. LOL

    Am I banned again?

  6. DaddyBronc says:

Well they posted but the blog is acting weird.

  7. DaddyBronc says:

I used that .243 on a little black bear that almost got to me before it dropped. I’d be scared to use it on an elk or a bear again. But if I had to hit something at 500 yards – that’s the gun I use. My favorite gun is the 7MM mag. Now that I can use for anything. Have to take the jackrabbits and varmints with headshots. But I love that gun.

  8. DaddyBronc says:

As for taking crows – we like to take them with .22LR or archery equipment. (Ever hunted quail with archery equipment? Too much fun! Got into it after trying spear fishing with spear guns!) Shotguns are too easy. We have the Ravens out here – you get fined for taking those – biggest difficulty is telling the difference. They all taste about the same though. LOL

  9. DaddyBronc says:

OK – nobody gonna talk to me tonight, I guess I have to go to bed. Prolly already offended the politically correct folks so best give up anyhow!!! LOL

  10. alex4serg says:

Hoping Ayers can have a real break out season this year. He played very well in that Pit playoff game.

  11. Tide Bronco says:

Thank you for the big smile, Turtle. Sure hope your little Norman and Daisey May are coming along nicely. Your posts have brought back many memories of our bottle feeding calves, and how sweet and cute they are when they have to depend on a human instead of Mama Cow. We’ve mixed calf formula by the gallons over the years, but the kids enjoyed it when they were growing up. I can still smell it just sitting here thinking about it.

If anyone runs short of crows, we’ve got dozens and dozen of big ones. Sitting here listening to them “caw” and watching them hop around the front yard as I’m typing this. I’ll be glad to “take” a few, pack them in dry ice, and ship them by UPS to your desired destination. Just let me know. I’m not in on any bets or wager, so I don’t have to worry about keeping any to eat, and may have to eliminate a few anyway, to keep them out of my corn when it starts making.

You guys have a great day!

    From http://www.gazette.com/sports/hillman-138195-broncos-ramsey.html :

The Denver Broncos found a bargain in the 2012 draft. Discovering Ronnie Hillman in the third round is the equivalent of finding a cache of gold coins under your bed.

He’s fast. He’s deceptively tough. He’s elusive in the same way Barry Sanders was once elusive. And he’s only 20 following his departure, after two seasons, from San Diego State.

I believe Hillman will bring instant results to the Broncos, especially as he works alongside Peyton Manning. The Broncos found a first-round pick in the third round.

I’ve seen Hillman at his best during the past two seasons as he delivered pain to the lives of Air Force coaches. In two games against the Falcons, Hillman rampaged for 363 yards and four touchdowns while personally handing two defeats to Air Force.

“This guy,” said Air Force coach Troy Calhoun, “is a home run. And he could not be in an offense more suited to his talent than Denver’s.”

Calhoun still remembers, in vivid detail, Hillman’s run against the Falcons in 2010. Hillman bolted through the middle of Air Force’s defense in the second quarter and encountered half the Falcons’ roster.

“Four guys literally had great angles,” Calhoun said, “and yet you were reaching. You would be ready to put a face on him, and all of a sudden you’re grabbing air. All of a sudden he’s gone.”

  13. alex4serg says:

All to often I just come here for the blogs. I sometimes forget about the great articles they have: http://www.denverbroncos.com/news-and-blogs/article-1/Elvis-Back-in-the-Building/2e4ae77a-4763-450f-b149-ac1c9c99c2c8

Dumervil said. “You’ve got to win. The year is now. Last year, we had a lot of young, inexperienced guys. Obviously we lost (Brian) Dawkins, a tremendous leader for us — that hurt — but on the other side we were able to get Peyton. So that’s tremendous for us. We won in the first round of the playoffs — just having that atmosphere, the way the fans were, just that excitement, I think that needs to be done around here for years to come. This organization is used to that.

“The only way you can keep going is to go up,” he continued. “Last year we won the first round, now we’ve got to go towards a Super Bowl. That’s the goal. That’s a mindset that has to be instilled early. We’ve got to work. It’s not going to be easy — they’re not going to give it to us. But I feel like we have the staff, the front office, players, supporting cast outside of football, the community, just the whole organization — we’re built to make a run for it. Why not us?”

  14. alex4serg says:

Draft pick that I am most excited about is Ronnie Hillman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbSeGoaNilE

Elite speed, great vision, patience and skill at using his blockers, great hands, makes excellent cuts, and he has the balance and agility to bounce off hit and break tackles. Can’t wait to see this guy in games. Heard him compared to Barry Sanders, Marshall Faulk, Darren Sproles. Maybe he can do for us what Charles has been doing for the Chiefs (and I’m not talking about getting injured).

  15. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Alex, Still woulda preferred doug martin but glad to hear good things about Hillman. Puts my mind at ease a lil that it wasn’t only our coaching staff that thought highly of him. Because i believe he was slated to go later than the 3rd. But if we got a 3rd round gem thats great. We need a “Jamal Charles” in our RB corp. Might not be able to carry the load but doesn’t need to.

    TRB

  16. Royalbroncofan1 says:

    What’s up TRB!
Nice article coming from the Colorado Springs Gazette. Hilman had great success vs. Chargers from Air Force.
Speaking of Air Force, sure hope Ben Garland makes the 53 man roster this year.

  17. alex4serg says:

Yeah Doug Martin looks like he is going to be a stud. Since we passed on him, hopefully he doesn’t light up the league for the next 10 years haha

  18. alex4serg says:

Still pretty disappointed in our draft overall, but trying to look on the bright side. Some of our picks have some nice upside. Wolfe looks reliable, Hillman obviously, and Omar Bolden all stand out to me as players that could step in and have an impact this year. If he can stay healthy and return to form, Bolden could end up be a real late round steal.

  19. alex4serg says:

Same, Garland had a great showing in the preseason first time around (as I remember). Plus I always have extra respect -for lack of a better word – for undrafted players.

  20. killerkod says:

Morning Everyone………been away from the blog for a couple days tending to my wife who had some surgery………she’s doing well though so it’s all good.

Wasn’t really shocked to hear Xanders got canned……………I was actually suprised he was retained in the first place. Looks as though the FO is pretty much ridding itself of everything McDaniels. Can’t blame them though……..they want to put their stamp on the team and take responsibility for their actions, not someone else’s. Gotta respect that.

I think next up on the chopping block is Moreno.

OT………where are you bud? Great job by the rangers to tie the game in the dying seconds and getting the OT win. I think the Caps force it to 7 tonight though. They won’t just lay down. Should be a great game!

  21. alex4serg says:

I’m still hoping we hold onto Moreno. He actually had some very good games last year before the injury. Plus, I think he would really excel with Manning hitting him in stride in the flats.

Even so, my BBBP (moreno with 1,500 all purpose yards) is looking bolder everyday haha.

  22. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Not much RBF1. Just checking in.

Alex, I am pretty dissapointed as well but much like you i think Omar Boden will be a great addition to our ranks. They ranked him on a list of value picks.

Still haven’t given up on Moreno. Ball sucks, McGahee is old (and aging), Fannin has potential but got injured pretty easily last year, went undrafted and while i want him to pan out more than anything with that size and speed, is looking like a long shot. I see Moreno and Hillman going forward. Not unless Moreno shoots himself in the foot some more. They are both not the most durable but we will see how it goes.

  23. Royalbroncofan1 says:

So word is Moreno may not be available to start out the season right?

  24. since1972 says:

Can anybody tell me why I can comment from my mobile phone. But from my laptop all I get where the comment box should be is that I need to sign in and register with Broncos country message boards. But when I follow that process it says I am already signed in and registered. Still no comment box.

  25. MILES H.I.G.H. says:

Weird? I wasn’t able to log on for 2 years till we got this new blog.

  26. alex4serg says:

I haven’t heard anything solid about Moreno not being ready to play when the season starts. He got that DUI, but I haven’t heard anything about a suspension. Assuming he is healed from last years injury, he should be good to go, I think.

  27. alex4serg says:

1972, perhaps you need to clear your cache and all that. Make sure cookies are enabled and such.

  28. killerkod says:

I watched the Film Session show on our championship win over the Packers……….it was so awesome to watch and I have it on PVR so I can watch it over and over again. I have the video chronicalling that championship season, which rocks…….but this show went into the ins and outs of the big plays throughout the game……….and there were many of them. That’s a game I will never ever forget.

  29. killerkod says:

I’m so craving to celebrate another championship…………

MAKE IT HAPPEN GUYS! THIS IS THE YEAR!

  30. alaskanbronco06 says:

Drayton Florence is scheduled to meet with Denver after hes done meeting with the Titans.

  31. alex4serg says:

Pretty sure this would have been illegal today http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qy5Wq3QpAfQ

But man, Atwater was taking no prisoners. Wasn’t about to watch Favre mount a comeback.

  32. alex4serg says:

Of course most people remember this one first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpJaJM4Cy8o

  33. alex4serg says:

Would be epic to win it all this year. I would be mostly just happy for Bailey. That guy really needs a ring before he retires to go along with a HoF career. Not to mention a SB win or two would probably cement his place in the hall.

  34. killerkod says:

no SB win is needed to cement his place in the hall…………but it sure would be nice! I’d love to see him win one, he so deserves it!

  35. alex4serg says:

Well, ensure that he is a first ballot HoFer

  36. alex4serg says:

I can hear it now, “This one’s for Champ.”

  37. louisianabroncofan says:

ya that will be great alex. ‘this ones for champ’. would love to hear that. he sure deserves to get one and the next couple of years is looking good for that. and thats about what he’s got left. is stlll hope he switches to safety for the last bit of his career once he cant get it done athletically at cb anymore. a charles woodson type position. jdr could come up with something. he’s a tackling machine and would do well at safety. as far as moreno i think he really could have a break out year. he and hillman could develop into a solid 1-2 punch if mcgahee has problems. either way i think with the 3 of them, we should do well at rb.

  38. Royalbroncofan1 says:

    Thanks alex !

  39. alex4serg says:

No problem, except … for what?

  40. alex4serg says:

Totally agree. Actually, I am kind of looking forward to safety since – due to the nature of the position – it will allow him to have a greater impact all over the field, at least potentially.

Just gotta make sure we have a serviceable corner to step in when they make the move.

  41. alex4serg says:

Yeah I think Moreno and McGahee will be our main 1, 2 threat, and Hillman will be that change of pace guy that is a threat to go all the way every time he touches the ball.

  42. alex4serg says:

Excited about this year and feeling pretty good about our roster. We are stacked at WR. DBs look solid with the addition of Adams and Porter. Harris was very good, and Carter came on strong towards the end of the season. Our LB depth is good, although DJ’s suspension will hurt. I think our DLine should be good. Warren (if he can stay healthy) will be a force in the middle, and Wolfe ought to add an interior rush. Garland and a few others will be good for depth and rotation. DE is good with Doom, and Ayers (who really improved last year imo) and hunter for depth.

Really our weakest position right now might be RB, but I feel good with McG, Moreno, Hillman, Fannin, and Ball. Not sure if JJ is on the roster still or not. Did we end up cutting him?

  43. alex4serg says:

I really like the idea of doing a final roster prediction competition. Is anybody already doing this?

If no one else is going to I suppose I might volunteer to run it.

Basically choose 53 guys from the 90 man training camp roster. Organize selections by position and depth. One point for correct names, one extra point for correct depth chart predictions.

    Anyone interested in this idea?

  44. Royalbroncofan1 says:

    Feedback on Moreno…

  45. killerkod says:

I personally think we have every reason in the book to be both optimistic and excited about this upcoming season. There’s a lot of pieces in place……….and when you really look at it a team on paper is not indicative of how it will perform on the field……..just ask the Eagles. lol It’s all gonna come down to how they gel on the field and how they all play together as a unit. And that……..unfortunately, is a time will tell situation. But there’s def reason for major optimism!

  46. DenverOranges says:

Sounds like a lot of work Alex but sure I will play

  47. alex4serg says:

    Oh. No problem

  48. killerkod says:

I’ve been calling for the axe to hit moreno for a while………but by all means, if he can put together a good season and stay healthy, I have no problems having him on the roster since his cap hit is low. But can he do that………that’s the question.

  49. alex4serg says:

If it seems like there is enough interest, and know one else wants to run it, I will announce rules and such after training camp begins in full.

  50. alex4serg says:

I can definitely understand the hate for Moreno. Oft injured, misses blocking assignments, has had some very badly timed fumbles, has kind of a crazy leg running style that leads to him tripping over his own teammates way too often …

But for me he has shown enough flashes of brilliance for me to hold out hope that he will continue to get better and help get us all more W’s.
