Carter Making Most of Opportunity

October 18th, 2012 - 10:31am by Gray Caldwell

Tony Carter has been waiting for an opportunity like Monday night.

Waiting might be the wrong word.

Since entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2009, the Florida State product hasn’t stopped working.

“Hard work, just being ready when the opportunity comes,” Carter said.

In 2012, his opportunity has arrived.

After three seasons on and off of practice squads with Denver and New England, Carter made the Broncos’ active roster out of training camp. He has played in all six games so far this season, and on Monday against the Chargers, was on the field for more than 50 percent of the defensive snaps.

He took advantage, grabbing his first career interception and returning a fumble 65 yards for his first career defensive touchdown in the 35-24 win.

“It was a great team win,” Carter said. “For me, there was a little icing on the cake (with) Monday Night Football, getting a great opportunity.”

Carter has seen extensive playing time on defense in two games so far this season — in Atlanta, with fellow cornerback Chris Harris out with an injury, and in San Diego, with cornerback Tracy Porter out due to illness.

Now he hopes to continue making plays in a deep, talented secondary.

“I’ve always believed in myself, but actually going out and doing it, now I know I can do it,” he said. “So I just have to be consistent and try to keep it going.”

Head Coach John Fox has been impressed with what he’s seen from Carter all season long.

“It’s hard to measure heart,” Fox said. “We have all kind of physical measurements we use. Tony’s a guy that’s, in stature, not the largest human being there is. But he’s worked very hard.

“My hat is off to him and how hard he’s worked and taken advantage of his opportunities.”

I believe we can get better on defense, just have to play bettet on third down. And play with a lead for once.

It seems to be a consistent pattern since the arrival of Fox, that the Broncos hit the field completely unprepared to play.

How does a team habitually become a ‘first half flop’???

How does a team habitually become the ‘fourth quarter miracle’???

Tony Carter has been playing great, this second half against San Diego will ignite the Broncos to their third super bowl championship!

    On Carter:

Wasn’t Champ referring to Carter when he said, “I wasn’t surprised – he’s the fastest guy in the building.” ????

I knew we had a solid young DB with the last name Carter, but I thought It was Quinton.. I love how Tony stepped up, and I’m looking forward to watching him continue to develop. Next year hopefully we’ll have two Carter’s crushing it in the secondary!

Someone explain to me why HE can’t be our kick off or punt returner please.

VERY good question cat! Unless Trindon turns it around – and quick, I’m all for him sent on an early “Holliday”… Lol

CARTER DID HIS THING ON MONDAY NIGHT..THE WAY THE TEAM PLAYED SECOND HALF WAS NASTY JUST THINK HOW SCARY THEY WOULD BE IF THEY PLAYED A WHOLE GAME LIKE DAT EVERY GAME…

I hope the coaching staff will keep put the productive players on the field like T.C . I can not figure out why the D can not play the first half as good as the second. This team can great if they could get the total plan togather

What a comeback, the only thing I see thats missing is special teams….tere is nothing special about our special teams. And someone needs to light a fire under these guys buts in the first half. Its like de ja vue all over again. every darn game..WE NEED TO CATCH FIRE NOW!!!

Crush Arizona: I think last Monday’s failure’s were a result of trying to “light a fire under these guysbuts..”. It certainly was an effort to make a change brining in Trindon Holiday. It just didn’t work; at least not Monday night. But you have to admit the front office has identified and accepted the problem and is trying to correct it. They’ll get it right but often change is painful before you find a fix for what’s wrong in life.
