Can’t Miss Play of the Year

January 12th, 2010 - 1:00pm by Gray Caldwell

Five plays have been nominated for the 2009 Sprint Can’t Miss Play of the Year. One of them comes from the Broncos. Any idea which play it might be?

Yes, it’s Brandon Stokley’s “Immaculate Deflection” from the team’s Week 1 victory against the eventual NFC North-champion Cincinnati Bengals. In case you don’t remember, after the Bengals took the lead with 28 seconds remaining in the game, Kyle Orton let loose a pass from the Denver 13-yard line. The pass was intended for Brandon Marshall, but a crowd of Bengals closed in, and cornerback Leon Hall tipped the ball into the air. Stokley swooped in and snared the pass, sprinting 87 yards into the end zone for the go-ahead score that cemented a 12-7, season-opening victory.

Still need a refresher? Here’s the video:

I was screaming too. Still remember the quake of the floor boards. Only wish Stokes had more passes his way this year.

  2. chaoticblaze27 says:

Yeah 2009 was a good year there was alot of jaw dropping plays i think royal 2 returns really had my mouth open but Stokley miracle play saved my money

  3. BroncoFan46 says:

    notice Josh wasn’t wearing a hoodie………. lol

  4. broncos20 says:

i screamed so hard that day…just when all hope seemed to fade…aha

but I think my “can’t miss play of the year” is the Cowboys game when Marshall snagged it over Newman and went the distance, juking several cowboys tooward the endzone and ran over to coach..that was amazing..
no wonder they’re called “cowboys”; they could handle one stud bronco..lol

  5. BeastFromEast92 says:

One helluva a play,Stokely.Hope he wins it,still gotta lot left in his tank, hopefully he’ll be here for a long time, good slot receiver too.

  6. thebeard says:

Its good to see McD looking like a professional coach in that video. First free agent release of 2010 needs to be that awful hooded sweatshirt…

  7. mikebirty says:

I still think Champ’s break up at the end of the Dallas game was a better play.

  8. brian_schneider says:

I thought McD would use Stokely more like the Patriots use Welker. Hopefully he’ll get some more looks next season.

  9. Go_Broncos_6 says:

One of the best last-second wins in all of history :D Hope it wins. Hopefully Stokley gets some more playing time this season. He deserves it :)

  10. Invesco_Love says:

if he doesnt win its riged that play will be remembered for EVER!

  11. baylinorcrush says:

It was called the miracle deflection, wasn’t it? What’s to debate, this game was lost barring a miracle, enough said, this contest was over before it started, unless a bunch of Marshall lovers or Bailey lovers are bored enough to vote multiple times for their respective star.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

My bad, the way bloggers were talking here had me thinking this was a contest to vote for the best Bronco play of the year, well, it’s not, it’s the best play in the league, so disregard my above comment. In light of that I voted for the miracle deflection, but I have to say that the game winning long TD pass to the back of the end zone with nearly no time left by Favre while he barely escaped a sack to win the game is probably the most amazing play I have seen this year and it wouldn’t surprise me if it won the contest.

  13. TheRoyalBeast says:

The play that started a year of great plays and even greater finishes….

I remember got back late from church on the east coast…so game was almost over almost over ran to my comp found a feed and as soon as the feed came up what did i see? An attempted pass to Marshall tipped and stokely to the house…amazing!!! only play in the game i say…thought we had lost because when i got to my comp we were at like our 30 with like 30 seconds left 3rd down no timeouts or w/e.

  14. Jde_07 says:

it was a amazing play but probally wont win because that one qb in minnesota name farve or something is on there also but I thought stokes play was more amazing,

  15. gary bronc says:

This is off topic but I was really disappointed in some of our players this year. I thought Jarvis Moss would rebound and turn into a solid linebacker, i thought Scheffler and Royal could possibly be a probowlers. And i also thought we would have one of the best run games in the league seeing how we started off so hot with Buckhalter and Moreno. Although Moreno got better the whole group didnt stay consistent and i really wanted to see HIllis running the ball too. Approaching next season we need some consistentciy.

  16. Orange_Crusher says:

I LOVE ME SOME BRANDON STOKLEY!!!!

He’s not the fastest wideout but he has the heart of the LOIN!!!!

I hope we get the ball to Stoke more next year…..

  17. baylinorcrush says:

OC, I’m surpised the word loin didn’t ban your post! LOL.

  18. Orange_Crusher says:

I’m surprised that I am stupid enough to miss that one…

Sorry Stoke…I meant, HEART OF THE LION!

  20. Orange_Crusher says:

    How about these draft prospects…
    Jimmy Clausen
    Tim Hiller
    Colt McCoy
    or Tim Tebow?

I like Tebow a lot. He is a natural scrambler and playmaker who needs to learn to be the “Drop back passer” that McD’s system requires. I think he has the mentality to be the pocket passer and the ability and natural skill to make the emergency scramble to get the first downs….

Tebow could go as late as the third round… great value!

  21. FTR says:

I like Tebow also. At 6-3 245 lbs he could be a Beast like Big Ben. I just do not think he is McDs type. But then again who knows what type McD does like. Ohh yeah Smart, Strong, Bla Bla. Colt McCoy needs to beef up a bit but is still 6-1 210 lbs We will have to wait and see if we even take a QB.

  22. some_Anchovies says:

Again, I still think we’ve got more problems than our QB. I feel like we would benefit more if we focused on getting our lines fixed, which seems more like a reachable goal, than waste it on just 1 guy.

Now there is also more problems than just the O and D line. But, you do realize that in fixing the O line you also fix the running game and help the passing game all in one swoop? fixing the QB situation does nothing for relieving pressure off the QB, it doesn’t open up the running game and it doesn’t fix the O line. And then if we fix the D-line…

Fix the O line and D line.

This is my logic behind trying to do that instead of the rest. You get more things accomplished by going after 1 task, by transitively helping other parts of the team.

Fix the O line you get 3 things done, and about 6 total if you really get into it. 1) You fix the O line for one, 2) you help the QB in 2 ways by giving him more time in the pocket to make reads, 2.1) and you take pressure off of him because he doesn’t have to worry about getting sacked all day, 3) and then you help fix the running game, 3.1) which in turn helps take more pressure off of the QB, 3.2) and that helps open up the running game by opening up the play action.

Spend all day finding a QB, yea, now we have an Amazing QB, but that only fixed 1 problem, the QB position. His line still sucks, his Running game sucks cause they have no hole, he worries all the time about getting a guy through the center trying to sack him and still has no time in the pocket. He drops back long enough to see option 1, maybe 2 before he has to start to scramble.

And if you can stop the running game on the other side, you make the QB have to pass all of the time, and you know what to play defensively.

That’s just my thoughts. Another John Elway would be great, but he still never won a super bowl till he got Terrel Davis. And I’m sure TD thanked the line for letting him get through those holes.

That being said, I still think we should still explore the QB possibilities, but I think that it’s more logical to fix the rest of the team first. It seems like a more reachable goal.

Back on topic. I thought that that play was awesome. I watched it recorded so I knew the score, but the whole time I had no Idea how they got 12-7. Then that happened..

They should use Stokley more as a Slot reciever, Along with getting Royal in as the Slot reciever the other times, or vise versa. Whoever isn’t tired at the time from running downfield lol.

  23. bronco-blaze says:

So i hear we lost rick D to the texans, and i also heard broncos are letting shanny talk with one of our other coaches…Kinda forgot his name bobby turner? or something like that. X.X crazy stuff man. WHO SAYS WE GO FOR MCNABB if eagles release him, which they wont but never know.

  24. baylinorcrush says:

anchovies, just a re-post of mine to show you bloggers here think like you do, only a minority think a QB is a priority:

This is my complete list of our needs for 2010 in order of priority:

A LARGE NT to occupy the middle.
Two BIG DL to stop the run.
    A sizable Center and
two BIG Guards to operate the power blocking scheme successfully.
    Two STOUT power RB’s.
One DE/OLB to compliment the pass rush opposite of DOOM.
One ILB to stop the run.
One receiving TE with sure hands.
    One TALL WR’s.
One full size CB (not a half pint like Phonzy).

  25. Orange_Crusher says:

    Anchovie…

What part of taking a QB in the THIRD round is taking everything away from the pursuit of getting lineman????? Or waisting WHAT on one guy???? IT’s a third rounder dude……

  26. TheRoyalBeast says:

    Orange Crusher

My QB choice from what you listed would be McCoy… A bit undersized but good speed, high sccuracy, above average arm, and plays/played in a system very similar to McDs (short passes and screens)…plus he may not have to be our first pick…he is going in late first round, early second round….if only we still had our pick and not only the bears pick

But i also Agree with Baylin about our D help which means we can use our first pick on that and find a way to get McCoy with a later pick. I would however suggest we get PROVEN DL help from FA and OL Guards from FA as well and draft some with potential in 3rd+ rounds….Anyway, it will be nice to see how things unfold cuz we dont have any say in these things lol

  27. Orange_Crusher says:

    Ahhh..the minority with the priority….
Here’s my list of needs in order of Minority:

    #1. Guard
    #2. Guard
    #3. QB
    #4. D lineman
    #5. Center

  28. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Stokley is the man. He’s awesome! Let’s have a nice offseason and get ready to dominate in 2010. GO BRONCOS!!!

  29. brian_schneider says:

I love all the enthusiasm here. We all have a great outlook on next season. Talkin’ about the draft, FA, and all that good stuff. There is still one major thing that is troubling me…last season we had a late season meltdown, lost to divisional opponents at home, missed the playoffs, went 8-8. This season we had a late season meltdown, lost to divisional opponents at home, missed the playoffs, went 8-8. We have new players, new system, new coaches and we still have the same results. I’m still wondering what is it that causes this, is someone spiking the water with something in the Mile High City?

  30. baylinorcrush says:

brian , you forgot a couple ingredients that remained the same the last couple of years, the stadium and the fans. The wine sipping/booing fans who have invaded Invesco because the Mile High stadium magic is gone. Our fans used to carry our teams through the tough games, nowadays, they just head for the exits to beat the rush, after they’re done with their booing … Seriously, that can’t be helpful to a team psyche, all those so called fans need to take a hard look in the mirror and realize they are not doing their part, just my opinion. Of course the team was probably dreadful all on it’s own (i.e.: game at Washington), but as fans we can’t control that, what we do control is how we behave for our home games (i.e.: Pittsburgh, SD, Oakland and KC), so let see some improvements from the stadium attending fans next year, I demand it! LOL.

  31. Broncomania56 says:

    Go Broncos!!!!

  32. brian_schneider says:

baylinorcrush, good point. You’re so right too, when Elway was engineering last minute drives everyone was on the edge of their seats, well the ones that weren’t standing anyway. The people that left early were probably kicking themselves, if not they should’ve been. I think you’re right in that the fans aren’t doing their part. I don’t get to go to many games but we’re suppose to be the 12th man. Who the heck drinks wine at a football game anyway? LOL!!! I wonder how many people left early from the Dallas and NE game?

Shame shame, the Barrelman would kick your @$$ for such antics.

  33. Orange_Crusher says:

Did you guys hear the Booos raining down on the Pats last Sunday?

I think the culture of the NFL fans as a whole has been altered into the new age generation X Booo bird types.

The bottom line is that it is hard to win in the NFL. 8-8 is a record that half the leauge would be glad to have right now. Yeah, it’s mediocre but at least it aint bottom feeder.

We actually have a lot to look forward to as Bronco fans. We have a good start on a newly rebuilt team and didn’t have to go through the kind of aches and pains that the Rams, Bucs or Seahawks did.

The future is bright….better put on your orange raybans!

I can’t wait to see Tebow in a Bronco uniform!!!

  34. royalbroncofan1 says:

RB Coach Bobby Turner signed with the Washington Redskins. As most of you know by now, O-line Coach Rick Dennison has signed with the Houston Texans. Two areas of concern Coach McD addressed as the season progressed. Both Coaches spent quite a few years in the Broncos organization. Best wishes to both.
Looks like KC signed Romeo Crennel to run the Defense and Charlie Weiss to run the Offense. (former Pats staff members).

  35. codybleedsorangeandblue says:

i just hope the loss of Dennison and Turner dont hinder Clady and Moreno

  36. TheRoyalBeast says:

    Dennison was the man!!1

Sorry, I didn’t even catch that part at all. Towards the end I was skimming through to get everything in.

I’m not talking about not looking for some QB talent, but so far a large amount of people I’ve talked to or read talking to each other think we should get a QB in the first round so that we get the good QB talent early. I keep telling them it’s way too risky to put your 1st round at risk on a QB when you’ve got much more you have to worry about on the team than just the QB.

but all in all, we do have 3 QB slots to fill and only 1 that we know of that can fill at least slot two in the long run (Kyle). We don’t know about Brandstater whether he could be slot 1 or 3 or two, and that still leaves the other slot open (and simms isn’t filling any of those.)
