Cakes for Cancer Pancake Breakfast

April 25th, 2012 - 11:56am by Gray Caldwell

During the 2011 season, the Broncos offensive line had even more reason to put defenders on their backs.

For every pancake block the line made last year, Zane Beadles donated $250 to Brent’s Place as part of his “Cakes for Cancer” program.

This Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to noon MDT, Beadles and his teammates are holding a Pancake Breakfast to benefit the Cakes for Cancer program even further, helping kids and families of Brent’s Place.

“This event is big for us,” Beadles said. “We’re going to try to raise a little bit of money, but the biggest thing about it is just trying to get the word out. Get people on board, companies on board, and get fans informed about the program. We want to have them be able to come in and interact with us.”

The event will include a pancake breakfast from Snooze, a photobooth by Bamboo Booth and a station to decorate cupcakes with D Bar Desserts along with facepainting, frame making, bounce castles and a few more surprises.

Tickets are still available — $50 for adults and $25 for kids age 12 and under.

More information can be found here.

“The program has been going well,” Beadles said. “We raised $15,000 (in 2011) just from the offensive line here. The goal is to really expand that as we go through this year and get some corporate sponsors — we’ve already started to get that. So it’s going well.”

Beadles’ inspiration for the program came while playing at the University of Utah, when he met a 7-year-old boy named Ryker, who was stricken with Glioblastoma Multiforme cancer.

The Utes adopted Ryker as a member of the team, but about a year later, he lost his battle with cancer.

“I knew I wanted to do something with cancer and something with kids,” Beadles said. “I just looked around the area and found Brent’s Place. I learned about them and what they do and it seemed like a perfect fit. That’s how it kind of came about.”

Brent’s Place operates two hospital hospitality houses — one near Denver’s Presbyterian Saint Luke’s Hospital with six apartments primarily for adults with cancer and their families, and one adjacent to Aurora’s Anschutz Medical Campus with 16 apartments primarily for children with cancer and their families.

The new facility also includes social and activity spaces, a meeting room, commercial kitchen, library, exercise room, and an outdoor play space designed specifically for immune-compromised children.

“Specifically, the money raised by Zane will be used to provide specialized housing for pediatric cancer patients who have been required to temporarily relocate to Denver, along with their families, to receive life-saving medical treatments,” Brent’s Place Executive Director Sean Meyerhoffer said in a statement.

“It’s awesome,” Beadles said. “Especially when I go into Brent’s Place and interact with the kids and the families and they say, ‘Thank you.’ Really just being around them is huge for me and really fulfilling.”

The program is important to Beadles, whose family has also been affected by cancer. He said the rest of the offensive line has taken up the cause, as well, allowing for a little extra excitement while watching tape looking for pancake blocks.

“It’s been fun,” he said. “The offensive line, we do everything together anyway — that’s the whole thing with us. So something that we could do for charity and kind of incorporate everybody in the room was definitely something I wanted to do. It’s been successful so far.”

    LUKE KUECHLY is CRAZY GOOD!!!

I took this from Wiki to show his tackles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REMEBER THIS IS IN AN AVERAGE “12″ GAME COLLEGE SEASON!!!!!!!!

12 GAMES!!! Look at his total for each year and his SOLO’s!!!!

THAT IS THE DEFINITION OF PRODUCTION*************************************************************************************************************

As a true freshman in 2009, Kuechly became the Eagles starting outside linebacker after Mark Herzlich announced that he would miss the season after being diagnosed with the rare form of cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma.[4] He finished the season with 158 tackles (87 solo), which led the team and conference, as well as being second nationally (first among freshmen).[5] He was the first true freshman in team history to lead the team in tackles and almost broke the freshman tackle record set by Stephen Boyd in 1991.[4] He also had a sack and returned an interception for a touchdown.[6] For his play he was named the 2009 ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year, was on the 2009 CFN All-Freshman Defensive Team.[7][8] In the Emerald Bowl, Kuechly was named the defensive MVP, registering 16 tackles in a losing efforts.

He moved to middle linebacker at the beginning of his sophomore season. He went on to lead the country with 183 tackles (110 solo) and has an ongoing streak of 21 straight games with at least 10 tackles.[9] Kuechly was named a finalist for the Butkus Award and the Nagurski Award. He broke BC’s single season record for tackles, topping the previous record of 165, held since 1991 by Tom McManus. After the season, Kuechly was named a unanimous consensus All-America selection. He was the first consensus All-American for the Eagles since Mike Cloud in 1998.[10] Boston College played in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl (the same bowl as the Emerald Bowl from the previous season with a change of corporate sponsorship) at the end of the season and Kuechly was named the defensive MVP for a second time.

2011See also: 2011 Boston College Eagles football team
Kuechly led the nation with an astounding 191 tackles (102 solo) during the season, averaging nearly 16 tackles per game.[11] Kuechly compiled his stats in the 12-game regular season, as the team finished with a 4-8 record and was ineligible for post-season play. He still almost broke the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) single-season tackle record (193, set by Lawrence Flugence in a 14-game season) and did break the single season tackles-per-game record with 15.9 (previously held by Rick Sherrod with a 15.6 average over a 10-game season).[12]

Kuechly broke the BC and ACC career tackle records with 532 tackles, eclipsing the previous record of 524 held by Stephen Boyd and only 13 tackles short of the NCAA FBS record held by Tim McGarigle.[12] He also broke the BC and ACC single-season tackle records, records that he had set the year before. On December 4, Dick Butkus personally presented the 2011 Butkus Award to Kuechly at the Boston College team banquet a week before the expected formal announcement of the recipient.[13] Kuechly went on to win the Lombardi Award, the Lott IMPACT Trophy, and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy for 2011.

  13. Orange27Crusher says:

We may not get him and probably won’t, BUT we can’t let the Chiefs get him either!!!

If he doesn’t go to Denver than I hope he get’s banished to the NFC West or somewhere we don’t play him very often!!!

GO BRONCOS!!! LUKE KUECHLY IN 2012!!!

  14. broncosfreak30 says:

Watch Martin break Burfict tackle at 2:02. haha

  15. Broncos LAX says:

Alright… Would you be interested in a full mock just me and you one of us can take AFC the other NFC?

  16. Orange27Crusher says:

Can you imagine Kuechly next to Von Miller for the next decade???

    DECADE OF DOMMINATION!!! 8)

  17. Orange_Crusher says:

Thanks Buck, wich blog was you mock on? I would like to go back and take a look at it.

  18. alaskanbronco06 says:

LAX That would be a lot of work. Having to keep track of who your taking as well as my boards lol. If the draft wasnt tomorrow I would.

For those participating get boards set up for round 2. If we can get the first round done quick then we can go to the 2nd.

If not all the divisions are chosen then i will split up the teams in those divisions and hand them out.

  19. buck484 says:

OC, not sure where its at it was one of the first ones. Not really so much same order as same players.

  20. alaskanbronco06 says:

Freak Martin vs Nevada 4:10 run was great!!!!

  21. buck484 says:

I think Mcgahee is a great back, but as a change of pace Martin could be great. He gets real low out of backfield but can break tackles and catches also. I believe he also returns kicks so very versatile and valuable.

  22. BleednOrange14 says:

ab, ill do the AFC East if i am able to do it when you all do it

  23. alaskanbronco06 says:

BNO14 are you going to be able to do it? All of it? Cause I dont want to give it to you if your not going to be able to do it.

  24. BleednOrange14 says:

    8)

  29. alaskanbronco06 says:

Ok BNO14 I got you marked down for the East. Right? If you arnt able to participate i will split the teams up among others.

Prepare for round 2 also. If we get round 1 done fast enough than we will do round 2.

Round 1 will now be 10 minutes before forfeit

Round 2 will be 7 minutes before forfeit.

For round 2 you dont need to have all the 1st round picks following your choice. Just previous round 2 picks.

Picks will be made the same way. Round 2 will also need a reason but not as long as round 1.

  30. BleednOrange14 says:

so does anyone else on here like trading up for Melvin Ingram?

  31. BleednOrange14 says:

ab, can you put me in the running for the AFC West as well? I would prefer the AFC West over the AFC East.

  32. alaskanbronco06 says:

BNO14 Yes I will mark you down for the running of the West also.

  33. BleednOrange14 says:

for the first time in a while, I actually agree with someone from the bleacher report:

Despite the incessant clamoring for the Denver Broncos to draft a defensive tackle in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft, I just don’t see it happening.

Defensive tackle is a position that is one of the deepest positions in this year’s draft. Not only is it incredibly deep, but also defensive tackle is one of the riskiest positions to draft and one of the positions most likely to find a bust as opposed to a gem.

John Elway and the Denver Broncos will hold a best player available attitude when they approach the 2012 draft and as the top talent at defensive tackle will likely be gone early, the scraps available rated at probably second or third round talent will be all that is left late in the first round.

I think prospects like Jerel Worthy, Kendall Reyes, and the like will have a good chance of making it in the NFL, but do they warrant a first round pick? Not if better talent at other positions is available.

Some of the better options in the first round for example, might include Alabama’s Donta’ Hightower at middle linebacker. He’s a beast in the middle and he would be a perfect match alongside Von Miller and D.J. Williams. He has lots of intelligence and has the look of a defensive quarterback. He can call plays on the defense, has experience in a pro-style defense from Alabama, and is ready to start Day 1.

How about top, first-round talent like Lamar Miller from the University of Miami? He is a home run hitter on offense and would be an awesome complementary back to Willis McGahee, a fellow Hurricane alumnus. In open space he is nearly impossible to run down. A threat out of the backfield, Miller would further boost the increasingly dynamic Broncos’ offense.

Recent news of the Broncos’ interest in cornerback Asante Samuel, points to the Broncos possibly acquiring South Carolina’s Stephon Gilmore at cornerback with their first overall pick. Gilmore had an awesome NFL Combine, running a speedy 40 time and impressing in defensive back drills. Imagine what next year might look like: Gilmore, opposite of Tracy Porter, Champ at free safety. That might ease some of struggles the defensive backs had in 2011.

So what does the Broncos’ VP of Football Operations say about their likelihood to draft a DT in the first round?

He was recently quoted in a pre-draft press conference on ESPN.com saying, “We don’t feel as bad about our tackles as everybody else does. I think that we feel OK there and Ty Warren will be back coming off an injury and (Kevin) Vickerson is coming back and then we have some young guys in there where we feel like we’ll be OK. It’s not nearly the need in our minds that people think it is.”

Despite last seasons’ struggles, mostly due to early injuries during the preseason, the Broncos are not looking too shabby at defensive tackle come into training camp. They have Ty Warren and Kevin Vickerson returning. Justin Bannan was brought in on a one-year contract during free agency. Air Force DT Ben Garland is coming back to the team after being on military reserve. Mitch Unrein is returning after an OK rookie season. Plus, there are a whole handful of others who will be wrestling over a roster spot during the offseason.

Unless a “can’t miss” defensive tackle happens to fall into Denver’s laps at No. 25 don’t assume the Broncos will be “buying” Jerel Worthy or Kendall Reyes with their first pick. Don’t even assume that the Broncos will be looking to pick up help on the defensive side only with their first rounder.

“We’re going to go in and continue as we get closer if we hear some things about going up or down, we’ll look at everything” Elway said during his pre-draft press conference. “We’ll continue to work on our board, set our board, do our mock drafts, see how things might fall. Again, we don’t have a mindset of exactly what we’re going to do. We’re going to have to wait and see until we get close to that pick at No. 25 and see how the board falls, we’ll never know. It’s a mindset that we want to find the guy that is going to come in and have an impact when it is offensively or defensively.”

Lots of positions on the Broncos’ roster could use upgrades. A first-round pick at a sure starter and instant impact player would be just what the doctor ordered.

My bet is, it’s going to be somewhere other than defensive tackle.

    Ok Freak. Its all good.

  41. buck484 says:

TRB, you’re right, wildly optomistic. Just picked who I wanted and where.

  42. mikew007 says:

AB….Man, if I would have known I would be down for the mock!!! I would commit but it will be almost 6PM when I get to the house and I don’t want to screw everyone over if I’m late.

I will check in though and if someone has to drop out in the middle of it, I’ll pick it up for them????

  43. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Its all good. I did the same. I had a mock long ago before Doug Martin rose in ranks and it had my hopes of getting hima t 57. Because of that I never changed it. Even tho that is ridiculously optimistic as he is now scheduled to go late first/early second which would mean our first round pick would be ideal for him. But I love to have my cake and eat it too (ha, kinda works with blog title.) TRB

  44. alaskanbronco06 says:

Mike think youd be able to be on by 6:30? If so I dont mind waiting a bit if you want part of it. Then we can start when you get on if its going to be before 6:30

  45. 1nOnlyTRB says:

well mike … depending on your division … u may not be selecting for a while after 6pm lol. Not unless u have the colts or redskins or vikes divison or something.

    TRB

  46. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Who ever selects the NFC south will only have 2 picks … both in the top 10. Bucs and Panthers. Falcons and Saints both traded away thier first round picks this year.

    TRB

  47. mikew007 says:

If I get the Colts, I’m going to pick Weeden just to screw up everyone’s draft board!!! Can you imagine???

  48. alaskanbronco06 says:

Mike if you want the AFC East has yet to be claimed. (BNO14 wants it but hes also in the running for the West) The first pick for the East is #8.

  49. mikew007 says:

AB…I’m solid at 6:15 to 6:30….so if you need me I’m there!

  50. mikew007 says:
