Brown Back on Board

September 21st, 2010 - 4:07pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos on Tuesday signed running back Andre Brown back to the active roster from the practice squad. He spent the first week of the season on the active roster before being waived and signed to the practice squad on Sept. 17.

To make room for the move, the team waived running back Lance Ball.

Brown is a second-year player who spent his rookie season with the New York Giants after being selected in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft.

Ball is out and yet he got most of the work in pre season, with McD if you play a lot in pre season and make the team don’t plan on playing a lot, if at all, you might not even hang around eventually, it’s now a clear pattern for sure. This tells me Maroney is not ready to go. Brown is the biggest back we got I hope he can show us what he can do Sunday, we need to win the TOP against Manning that’s for sure.

  2. 1nOnlyTRB says:

lol well, dunno about this brown kid but i wish ball the best. Wasnt great but he was trying and ive seen more from him than i have from brown. I think wat killed ball was the catching game. he couldnt catch to save his life, and when u dump off to a RB its usually a key play or saving play and the just HAVE TO catch it. Not to mention his lack of catching ability caused an int in preseason.

Any chance we can trade Brown, Maroney and a 5th round pick for Brandon Jacobs? lmao

  3. strandoftds says:

Who knows, maybe Jacobs will end up just getting cut if there is no trade offers. If so, the Bronco`s should snag him. We need a powerback.

  4. baylinorcrush says:

What this shows is how crappy an off season McD/Xanders had about getting help at RB, not a single off season acquisition on the roster at that position, and it’s a position we needed big help at, kind of like falling flat on your face on this one. Oh well, let me think, how are we going to deal with this upcoming game?

On O our running game will most likely be what it always is, subpar, so very little chance to keep Manning off the field, and with our little running game threat, Orton may be an easy target for the agressive Colts D.

On D, we will most likely have no pass rush on Manning like so far this year so he may be able to carve us, and the new Colts running game could have a good day against our D that hasn’t stopped the run in eions.

Other than that I think we are in great shape, haha, just kidding, but seriously folks, our best chance might be turnovers and ST if we can figure out coverages, and of course the home field advantage, but even that is always a non factor for Manning. That guy is like the incarnation of the devil for opposing D’s, a one man team, there is no other one like him in the league, and if I wasn’t a diehard Bronco fan I would be looking forward to see him operate on Sunday. Sorry for not seeing much of a chance, the Colts are hungry since they need to keep up with the Texans, we will get their best shot, I’m not even going to venture whether we will have our stating corners or not, that would be too depressing. But hey I’ll be rooting just the same as always, we can’t pick our opponents, that’s who we have to beat this week, and this is as good a time as any to remember any given Sunday. That’s gonna be my mantra for the rest of the week, I think that’s the best thing I can hang my hopes on:

ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY…

  5. baylinorcrush says:

    This just out from Klis:

The sheriff’s office report, quoting an investigator at the scene, said McKinley had made statements shortly after the surgery “that he should just kill himself.” The report added McKinley didn’t know what he would do if he couldn’t play football because football was all he knew.

Now I don’t know who he told those things to, but it certainly contradicts everyone close to him so far saying he showed no sign of distress whatsoever and that he was just as happy go lucky about his life as ever. Something is seriously amiss, I wish I knew who he said those things to.

  6. baylinorcrush says:

They probably got it from some of the people they interviewed (I’m on here all alone so I have to answer my own questions):

Among those listed who presented information were former Broncos’ running back Cory Boyd, who was McKinley’s roommate at the University of South Carolina and a close friend, Boyd’s wife Brittany, and several females. Brittany Boyd and Shantell Smith, both of Aurora, and a small child were outside McKinley’s residence when officers arrived. The child was McKinley’s son, Keon.

I guess they didn’t take the threat seriously.

  7. baylinorcrush says:

I heard Keon is one year old by the way, at least he won’t have any recollection of this event.

  8. baylinorcrush says:

    Shanny released Larry Johnson.

  9. bronco-blaze says:

Just because he smiled, doesnt mean he wasn’t hiding something. Prob didnt want to worry his fellow team mates by the way they described his personality. What im curious to see is if there were an overdose on drugs or alcohol… Because maybe he got so S*** faced and got super depressed and yea…Never know.

  10. baylinorcrush says:

    The police reports says:

The TV in the bedroom was on the NFL Network. Police said the second floor was “very smoky” and the attending officer “could smell a strong odor of marijuana.” A bag of leafy substance was found in a shoe box that was in the bedroom. The report also said McKinley had been taking 500 milligrams of Naproxen, an over the counter pain reliever.

I don’t see how such benign drugs, an over the counter pain reliever and weed could have such effect, in my opinion it had nothing to do with it.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

And no suicide note so it will go down as a young athlete falling down on his luck, unable to cope with the difficulties of multiple injuries and doubts about making it in the NFL after a stellar college career with no background other than football to fall back on if needed by his own admission. Education is way more important than football, an injurty can take football away from you in a split second, an education will stay with you forever. I think that is what the youth out there should take out of this tragedy.

  12. Yovi21 says:

agreed bay, A very sad situation and my heart and prayers go out to his family. I really felt as if he could contribute huge to this team. I wonder if there is something we don’t know, I just don’t understand why (not that I ever would) I just wonder if the injury was downplayed or something. I know he will be watching with D.Will and D.Nash come Sunday.

  13. BeastFromEast92 says:

Does Larry Johnson have anything left ???
It’s a damn shame we have to sit back and hope for some RB to appear out of nowhere to help us,McD blew it in the off season and especially the draft,WE NEEDED A POWERBACK,but we didn’t get one.Maybe White or Maroney will be our Powerback next year.

    BFE

  14. baylinorcrush says:

Larry Johnson should have something left:

    6’1″, 235 lbs, 30 yrs old.

Played for 8 seasons, but his first one for only 20 carries and last year for only 46 carries. 4 of the other six years he only carried the ball less than 200 times for each of those years.

The only two years he was the starter and got to put real mileage on his body was for two years in a row where he amassed over 1700 yrds each of those years.

The problem with him is more attitude than mileage in my opinion. At this point anyone at RB is worth taking a look at, specially someone who was released straight out. If Jacobs stays put in N-Y, I would definitely have this guy somewhere on my radar. I mean Bucky is obviously all but done, Maroney is hurt and can’t play, Brown no one in the world knows what this guy can do, it leaves us with Moreno as the only legitimate threat at RB we have now, not exactly something to be confortable with, what if he goes down….

  15. baylinorcrush says:

This should tell anyone how bad we need help at RB:

After two games, the Broncos are in the odd position of ranking eighth in the NFL in rushing attempts (63) and ranking last in average gain per carry (2.4 yards).

Last as in 32nd place, sad, very sad, and McD said all along through free agency and the draft that we were fine at RB, so he didn’t address it, how does that feel now coach? And please don’t tell me it’s all the O line’s fault, coach adressed that, remember?

  16. oldsouthstander says:

Yes, McD addressed the Ol in the offseason, but… While our currrent RB core is not a group of all-pro and should take some of the blame for our dismal average carry, at the moment the current actual starting OL has only one strter from last years startiung OL. No matter what the caliber of skill any starting Ol has, it must play together to get that intinnctive knowledge of what the guy next to him ius going to do at this instant. Only them can they functions as a true unit. This is not going to be that case for several games after Kuper and Harris are back as starters. Reality is that our riunning averegae will not be worth talking about until the OL can truly work 8instinctively as a unit.

  17. hometeam007 says:

OSS (old south stander)- I agree 100%.

This O-line is still gelling.. They have not worked together as a unit much and they keep getting switched around. In addition, I do see Moreno improving in the first two games. Remember this is his preseason also. I think we should be a much improved running team against Indy. The game will tell. I hope they are under-estimating us and their Defense takes the game off. If we can come out with a lead, I think we will play much better defense.

  18. baylinorcrush says:

Of course the O line will improve over time because McD adressed it in the off season, but that is not the case with the running backs, time will tell as usual, time has been good to me, haha.

  19. baylinorcrush says:

If you want us to come out with a lead, hopefully McD won’t defer on the coin toss like he did last year against the Colts, LOL.

  20. BeastFromEast92 says:

Moreno is a good RB,he slashes and dances around trying to find a hole, and I know the Oline needs time to jell, but we need a powerback that can slam it up the gut for a yard or 2 when we need it.Blame it on the RBs or the Oline it don’t matter we still need a dominant RB with power that can run thru defenses, just one man’s opinion that don’t mean a Helluva lot.

    BFE

  21. baylinorcrush says:

Look at it this way, we used to have zone blocking backs with a zone blocking O line and it worked wonders, now we have a power blocking O line and we still have zone blocking backs, that to me is a substantial problem that McD failed to address. There are a lot of things I don’t see eye to eye with McD and that’s no big deal, it’s his show, but I don’t have to buy it all just because he is the guy in charge.

  22. Broncfalls says:

All the points regarding the running game have some merit. But what’s a little deceiving about our running stats is that Moreno got over 60 yds out of the back field. Now I know it’s still an outlet but it’s 67 yds he’s getting because of his style of “running” in the open.

For whatever reason, it’s working. It’s getting Moreno out in open spaces to do what he does best. Let’s hold out the final ruling of our o-line until we play with all starters. It’s unfair to blame McD or anyone else for a results against a loaded question.

I believe the Colts game will test this team in every facet of the game. Let’s be real here though. One of 2 things are going to happen. Let me prefece that I can fully understand either of these situations.

Either the distractions this week are going to be to hard to overcome that we are simply out played and out coached or this organization will push through this adversity like the great team using it as a motivational resource to play with all their heart.

If we lose I will have a good idea of why and I will understand. But I will never, say that this Broncos team can’t compete with the Colts. I simply don’t buy it! Yes they are a fantastic team, but gosh darn it so aren’t we! I’m tired of people giving teams SO much love because of what they achieved over time and not what was in front of them now!

Heading into week 3, Houston has the #31 ranked total defense. We are at #19…..I know it’s only a stat but it’s a starter. Houston does have the #1 rushing offense with 157 yds a game. o.k. (I’ll take Moreno’s total yds) and Denver has the #5 ranked passing offense…..My point is Indy can be beat! PERIOD! on paper…..comparing the Houston/Indy game vs. the Indy/Denver game why wouldn’t we win?

Just my opionion is all :)

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  23. baylinorcrush says:

Like on your car, if you have a sports car with slick rims you are going to put some real nice racy tires on it. On the other hand, if you have a hummer with nasty big old rims on it, you are going to put some tires with major thread on that, it only makes sense. Right now we got hummer style heavy duty rims with slick sports car tires mounted on it, go figure.

  24. Broncfalls says:

on a side not…..I saw John Lynch doing another game as an analysist with FOX….that was wierd! :)

I LOVED THAT GUY! what a class act….and he could flat out play some football….Man #47 that was a number to run away from. :)

That guy would hit you so hard, he’d make squirrels fall in love with mountain goats!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

    * just trying to have some fun :)

  25. baylinorcrush says:

Just a reminder, before the start of the season I claimed here on a Mike Rice blog that the Texans are now the real thing and to watch out for them and I picked them to beat us later on at home, so I’m not a real good candidate to respond to your question Broncfalls.

  26. hometeam007 says:

Moreno is still learning but I think there is a time to dance around, (Chris Johnson) and a time to pound it in there ( A. Peterson). He just needs to stay healthy and figure it out. That will come as long as the coaches do their part. I think Moreno still has a good shot a becoming a top ten running back in this league.

  27. Yovi21 says:

well in my mind I feel that first loss the colts had is our biggest disadvantage, they are focused, you could see that last week. On top of that, I doubt all our players will be focused considering Kenny (RIP) I am hopeful for an upset but if I had money on it I’d say Denver loses this week by 7-10, Manning always plays like a superstar in Denver (which sucks) but we will see if thats the case this week, thats why they play the game. I agree with BF, The colts can be beat but we will have to play good the whole game, limit our mistakes, and call a better game. NO giving up a big return and having them start on their 30! Defense needs to play big this week in order to win!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  28. Big D 44 says:

IF I was a player I would definitely use this adversity to my advantage. I would want to give it 110% to honor Kenny on the field. So I really hope that this is the mind set the Broncos have. Kind of like the move “8 seconds” or the old Notre Dame saying “Do it for Gipper.” I also do understand if it has a negative effect, but that just isn’t how I tick.

Let’s go Broncos, honor Kenny and make him proud.

I LOVE ME SOME DENVER BRONCOS….

  29. strandoftds says:

The only way we are going to win this game is to play keep away. One thing is for sure, Orton is gonna get rid of the ball quickly. It`s not gonna be 2nd read, 3rd read. He`s going to throw the ball the second It`s in his hands. Orton may get 3 or 4 plays to step back behind center and may even roll out some but he`s not gonna get much time to find the open reciever. As for running the ball, good luck. The Bronco`s are gonna throw throw throw. My biggest concern is our pass rush because it does`nt take a rocket scientist to figure out that we don`t have one. We are capable of winning this game, but we must be picture perfect. We have to play keep away. Easier said than done.

  30. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Hometeam, the problem with that is Moreno is not as fast as CJ and cant pound like adrian peterson. He is a pretty balanced back which is his strength and his down fall. No speed, no power, All he has are finese moves and great balance. He would do better in a zone blocking skim.

But i hear everyones point. The thing is that if u run a power O u should have at LEAST one powerback and we have NONE. A smash to Morenos Dance lol. Im holding out for maroney because altho he is not a smash, he used to have really good speed. And since we already traded a 4th for him, we wont be making anymore pick trades for RBs. I doubt. Not unless we trade moreno for someone which is like trading a pick for someone but once again…DOUBT IT lol. I believe in Moreno tho. At 100 percent health kid would be a beast. And he had some burst back agaisnt seattle. Just wish he was a bit faster cuz he should have taken that screen pass to the house (but he always has leg injuries, ankle last year, hamstring this year). TRB out…

  31. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    strandoftds

I would like to see some Tebow this game. can take a beating and is more mobile against the pass rush and might even take off agaisnt their poor defense. This is a game I think Tebow should have a package. Just my opinion tho. It will take everything we’ve got to compete against the colts.

  32. broncosfreak30 says:

Haha, dang everyone is soo freaked out about our running game!! I for one think we should do fine! We got great potential in both Brown and Maroney!! I think Buck though doesn’t look like he did last year…I hope Brown and Maroney both get a chance to play in the Colts game! That could throw off their preparation because Maroney, Brown, and Moreno all run with different styles!! Brown is completely a down hill runner, Maroney is a down hill runner with great speed and quickness, and Moreno is our elusive trickster type of runner!! I think we could easily throw off the colts rushing defense with having these guys step in for this game and show us what they got!! Hopefully Harris and Cuper will be back out there!!!

And I only pray that Champ and Goody are out there for this game, well need everything that we can get!

  33. strandoftds says:

1nOnlyTRB, I`d love to see that. Big Tebow fan. I`d like to see him roll out to the left behind Clady for a First down. Maybe even a TD or the goal line. That would be Awesome. How about a hook up of some TNT for a long TD huh? Come on BayBay!!!!

  34. strandoftds says:

I like our running game with Harris in. But not this game. Not enough time to gel with new O-line and our backs being hurt. In due time our running game should be fine. We must get healthy on O-line and our backs.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

First good thing I heard this week:

McDaniels said offensive linemen Ryan Harris and Chris Kuper would practice today.

  36. BeastFromEast92 says:

Baylin…glad to hear that bro.We need all the help we can get.
If we don’t run the ball against Indy,we don’t win period,if we get behind early and have to pass,Freeny and Mathis will kill Orton. So we need to run and use some screen passes,so Orton can get rid of the ball fast,I don’t know who watched the Indy-Giants game, but Freeny and Mathis were relentless.I would like to see Tebow get in a few plays too.

  37. BeastFromEast92 says:

Anybody heard any news on Champ or Goody, without them we’re toast.IMO.

  38. baylinorcrush says:

BFE, I watched that game, I wanted to see what we are going up against, and you are correct, the QB pressure was relentless, and the Giants have an excellent running game, we don’t, scary.

From early reports it seems as if Bailey will have the best shot at playing, even so he really didn’t seem that enthused about the possibility, I mean he left on crutches after the game with a foot injury, but Goodman’s thigh injury is reported as more significant, I’d say he is a long shot at best. I think McD is getting ready for the game as if they are both out, I would, and if one of them can play great.

  39. baylinorcrush says:

Anyhow we should get our first injury report on this site after today’s practice, but it will just show that both Bailey and Goodman did not practice I would imagine, we won’t know for a couple of days, even then it might be game time decision stuff, just so the Colts don’t game plan mainly on the rookie corners knowing B and G are out.

  40. baylinorcrush says:

Correction, Cox is a rookie (Bailey’s back up), Nate Jones is not (Goodman’s back up).

  41. 1nOnlyTRB says:

If only one can make it back i think its safe to say we all wish its Champ. Bailey is just the greatest. This will give a chance for Bailey Jr to line up on the other side of Bailey lol. While some may say Goodman outplayed champ last year (which i dont think he did, he just had more interceptions) this year goodman hasnt been AS impressive as last year. So im glad the young blood (cox) will have a chance to get his feet wet. Cassius Vaughn too. anywho looking forward to the game, got Moreno in fantasy, im looking forward to him having a career game. Maybe Maroney gets healthy enough to get a touch or two so we can see what he is made off. Bucks time here is numbered.

  42. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Didnt look at it like that baylin. hmm, would still rather see champ and cox with jones doing what he does best the nickel. and cox INT last game he was line up on goodmans side i believe.

  43. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, and Syd’Quan backs up Cox and Vaughn backs up Jones.

  44. baylinorcrush says:

Looking at it on the bright side, if Bailey or Goodman can’t go, or both, we will probably activate Syd’Quan for the first time, I like that guy, for ST for now that is, I wouldn’t trust him at corner yet, LOL.

  45. 1nOnlyTRB says:

i wouldnt trust him as a corner either, and he is kinda pint sized but puts in more work than phonzy ever did. I dunno. I like al of them in the return game, cox, vaughn, and sydquan. Chances are if Cox and vaugh are starting on defense or playing substantial time. if syd is activated he will see most of the returns and that kid is a pinball wizard.

  46. broncos20 says:

Im not really concerned about covering their 1 and 2 WRs..Dawk and Hill will be busy this upcoming game if Nate and Cox start. Im more concered about their slot and especially TE Dallas Clark. Historically, he’s been torching any LB covering him and this is still a problem in our defense. Last week, Dawk was truly playing FS running around baiting and covering Seattls Carlson, but that was because Bailey and Goody kept those WR in check…So we could see another big day for their TE…I look to see Peyton make quick throws to Clark on their first drive.
Its all gameplan “Wink”..Show em’ we’re not the same team defensively.

Offense needs to be ready for a shoot-out to keep up. Last year Marshall had a record day but we still lost..Every body needs to work together on these next few games.

Hope Kuper and Harris get back on the field. Draw up another fake play just to throw them off their game..lol..oh! but i forgot they have two of the fastest DEs in the game…Id like to see Clady dominate Freeney.
    Go Broncos!

  47. strandoftds says:

Just heard on 850 KOA that Champ and Goody did not practice today.

  48. mikew007 says:

Hmmm……I still believe our lack of running game is on the O-Line…not the RB’s. I didn’t see many holes to run through and I looked.

Any given Sunday but….Indy will likely crush us again, Champ or no Champ.

  49. dpbroncos says:

Just a thought… how about trading away WR’s for gerhart in minnesota?
    hes a great power back!!!

  50. broncolorado says:

Don’t forget Indy has a lousy running game and usually wins handily. Why can’t the Broncos do the same?
