Broncos Win in Overtime

October 23rd, 2011 - 2:37pm by Max Henson

After missing two field goals earlier in the game, Matt Prater stepped up and drilled a 52-yard try in overtime to give the Broncos a 18-15 victory in overtime over the Dolphins.

Linebacker D.J. Williams strip-sacked Matt Moore and recovered the fumble setting up the Broncos in prime position midway through the overtime session. After three consecutive runs from Lance Ball, Prater trotted on to seal the win.

Tim Tebow once again engineered a fourth-quarter comeback, throwing two touchdowns in the closing minutes and running in a pivotal 2-point try himself to send the game to overtime tied at 15.

The Broncos improve to 2-4 on the year after securing their first road win of the 2011 season.

He hasn’t done an average job. He’s lost more games than he’s won and kept the loser Orton in with a winner sitting on the bench. He had the only record last year worse than ours. In 10 years at Carolina, he put up 3 winning seasons. He’s a bad joke and Denver is the punchline.

  2. FLBroncoGator says:

Yeah Carnage. Because we know he did nothing against the Chargers too. Put down the crack pipe man.

  3. thecladybunch says:

we dont know if keeping Orton in was actually his doing…and like I said with the situation he inherited, he’s been ok imo…

  4. carnagebronc says:

Daddybronc….you say u hate to see 3 and outs…then you really must have hated this game. We failed to convert a third down the entire first half. Colquitt was on field more than Tebow. They praised Ponder because a. He played against the Champions and they were there til the end. B. He played the position the way it was meant to be played. Did we win yes. Luckily OT was taken out of Tebow’s hands. Did EVERY bit of luck go our way? Indeed. Tebow’s first pass sh.ould have been intercepted….his fumble was knocked out of a Miami player’s hand by another Miami player. Miami drops an onside. Miami’s coaches decided tasked was over and iced their players. All played in our favor. Unfortunately I do not think these things will happen again. Tebow cannot and has not proven the ability to throw the football..s.especially in situations when pass is dictated

  5. thecladybunch says:

that offense was absolutely imbarrasing the first 57 minutes, lets be honest…and alot had to do with TT…

  6. FLBroncoGator says:

Well Clady, since SOMEBODY made the switch, we’ve outscored our opponents. I guess only time will tell huh. So far…Fox is losing and Tebow is WINNING and that’s all that really matters at the end of the day.

  7. thecladybunch says:

I hear ya, but on same token, what happened today was an aberation, we wont win another game getting play like that….

  8. daddybronc says:

I’m not ready to can Fox or McCoy. I drew up my own game plan before the game and with a new receiving core and a new starting QB, combined with an decent defense and no offensive threat to concern ourselves with – I drew up my plan very conservative and focused on McGahee and Tebow runs. It made sense and still does. Execution was bad until the last 5 minutes but those last five minutes in MIA and the fourth quarter against SD are fixin to pay off against d lions.

  9. carnagebronc says:

FL I WILL SAY THIS BUT ONCE…..don’t ever again personally insult me…I have not done that to u…so save it.

  10. thecladybunch says:

I did like how TT felt some of the pressure and was able to extend the play, that was impressive

  11. FLBroncoGator says:

imbararrasing? Really lol? Yes, a LOT had to do with Tebow scrambling around for first down and trying not to get sacked since our O line didn’t block and he had nobody to throw to that can catch. Thank God he’s in as good of shape as he’s in or we would’ve been killed. It’s hard for any quarterback to take the beating that he did and still come up with the win after more than 60 minutes. Carnage, I’d like to know how you think OT was taken out of Tebow’s hands. I sure didn’t see any other QB play today and I’m pretty sure that Tebow got us into field goal range for Prater to finally make one.

  12. daddybronc says:

clady – come from behind victories have marked the careers of the great teams and players – that’s what we watch for -

Carnage – the 3 and outs drove me nuts – agreed

can’t blame anybody but Prater that the score and momentum was lost early

    Tebow – orchestrated the win!

  13. RabidOrange says:

Actually, gator, it was DJ Williams who got us in field goal range in OT.

  14. raidrhadr says:

daddybronc- I think there were alot of factors that hurt us early. Prater’s misses hurt but I think they need to find out how to make TT beleive the 1st quarter is the 4th qtr. I thought there were some bad play calls. Not enough mixing it up with some play action and let the kid throw the ball into some intermediate and occasionally long routes.

  15. thecladybunch says:

granted he scrambled well and got a few firstdowns that way, but most ot the reason the WR’s didnt catch the ball was cause it was nowhere close to catchable…

  16. raidrhadr says:

yes I did see the inaccurate throws. That can be improved

  17. carnagebronc says:

FL it is obvious u didn’t watch the game….in OT Tebow got the ball in good field position…about 20 yards were needed for us to be in fg range and Tebow 3 and out. The sack fumble was what got Prater in position to kick. They ran the ball three times and kicked.

  18. thecladybunch says:

looked like Miami’s defense took pedal off the gas on last couple drives.

even Reggie Bush after game said his own team “stinks” right now

  19. daddybronc says:

“They praised Ponder because a. He played against the Champions and they were there til the end. B. He played the position the way it was meant to be played. ”

There you go again Carnage – (by the way peeps – I love Carnage and what he brings to the discussion and I think too that personal insults don’t fit – not even when Carnage gives an incredibly unique perspective.)

    “meant to be played” ???

  20. thecladybunch says:

Raidr….I would have liked to see some more play action, the way the running game was going, thought they could have some success with it

  21. thecladybunch says:

does anybody know how long McFaddens out?? he left game and only had 2 carries….WUPT?

  22. carnagebronc says:

By “meant to be played” the primary responsibility of the qb is to distribute the ball to his playmakers and lead them in a matriculation up.the field. In today’s game that is done in a variety of ways, but the quarterback is deemed to be the most important figure in the aerial movement of the ball. Ponder did a great job of passing the ball…he scrambled as well but often scrambled to score. He missed receivers too….but not tebowesque.

  23. thecladybunch says:

Tony Sparano will be fired tomorrow…

  24. thecladybunch says:

actually they might keep him until they wrap up 1st pick, then fire him

  25. FLBroncoGator says:

LOL and SMH at Carnage. Rabid, you’re right and DJ gets MVP in my book. I was screaming at the t.v. that we needed the turnover the very play before he stepped up with the strip. It was absolutely beautiful. Our D played a great game all the way around. All of them did a great job. One thing we have GOT to work on as a team is penalties.

  26. timmah says:

TT wasn’t all the blame for their woes and he wasn’t the one who won the game. It was the broncos who won. All of them sucked it up together and all of them was great together. Therefore I was proud to see the broncos playing as a team. I saw champ talking to tt. How many times have you seen champ talk to the qb or any defender really chatting it up with their qb? That is the first step to rebuilding playing as a unit not as defense and offense. The offense rooting for the defense and the defense rooting for the offense. Now just make it a habit to win games a unit and we will be seeing playoffs in no time. Not saying this year but maybe next year or the year after that. Patience is a virtue. If u want to rebuild it takes patience and a couple of years in the draft before playoffs take effect. The win now attitude never prevails. Ask the miami heat how that went for them last year. A dallas team that took a while to get all of the pieces together finally won. Ask the dallas cowboys or even the raiders. Give tt and all the youngsters some time. Ayers is in his third year and he is finally improving. It takes a while. Anyways
    GO BRONCOS.

  27. RabidOrange says:

I just wish Doom could stay healthy and at 100%. We’ve been excited all year for the pass rushing tandem, but so far it’s been all Miller. I suppose he should officially be Batman. Doom’s gonna have to be Robin if he can stay healthy.

Gator, I apologize for my comment about you being a “fan simply because Tebow is here.” I got pretty heated about the McD stuff, and let it carry over. I disagree with you on the coach thing, but I can be civil about it.

  28. daddybronc says:

Carnage – I have no problem with your definition but it is very limited in it’s scope.

What you have done is like defining a general as the one who writes up the plan of attack – of course he is but he is also responsible for winning, casualties, morale, and virtually everything else.

It is the same with a QB – Tebow will settle and he will find out how to best use his ‘skill set’ to win in the NFL – but to say that his ‘skill set’ defines him out of the role of NFL QB, is something like my prediction of 45-10 for today’s game- it stinks of wishful thinking.

The way I see it Tebow is right now an NFL QB – young and inexperienced – unfairly criticized – unfairly lauded – who will redefine the position of QB as dramatically as Shannon Sharpe redefined the role of Tight End – in due time and as our dear friend Bay mentioned not necessarily as a Bronco (I’m breaking my own heart)

  29. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I can’t believe the Orton Tebow arguement continues …u cannot compare the 2 because they are both clearly in different position of thier career.

We won. We should be happy. Ugliest win in history? yes but got the job done. You say everythign fell in our favor for us to win … alot of things wetn wrogn for us but things clicked in our favor eventually … thats football. Any given sunday

You say we won because they took the ball out of Tebows hands … Really … the reason we were even in a position to win was because at the end they actually put it in tebows hands.

The whole game miami looked good because we didn’t force em to play honest – we just ran so they stacked the box. Granted TT was looking bad in the pass game but u cannot just abandon either the run or the pass.

And u say he looked bad with 13 days of practice … reallly? really? cuz thats enough in the NFL … just 13 days and u are fine. Granted I hear ponder did well but we all knew passing wasn’t tebows strong suit … finding a way and improvising is. I will no stand here and say he is the greatest QB ever … but he has everything else needed for the QB position … his passing skills are just not where they need to be and its my prayer it will get better.

The pathetic display was both because of play calling AND execution.

Lets just hope they look more prepared against the Lions who by the way I don’t are all that as I have called their last 2 losses because those were the first real teams they have played. Even the bears don’t count as a real team because they are up and down.

    TRB

  30. 1nOnlyTRB says:

And o I guess by your barometer Ponder is way better than Orton too because he had a much better game agaisnt the packers than Orton did.

And by the way … Greenbay may be a more accomplished team but their pass D is 31 … Miami’s is 21.

I remember last year after Tebows performance against Houstons pass D … all everyone wanted to say was … they had the worst pass D in the league … I guess the stats all of a sudden don’t matter because they are super bowl champs. The question isn’t scoring on the Packers … it is stopping them from outscoring u which falls on the D … and unlike our O and Orton … Ponder didn’t give up turnovers … and definitely didn’t give up a pick 6 like Orton against the packers.

    TRB

  31. josephjjp69 says:

@ Trb was just about to say something similar glad u did it though bc im on my phone and it would have taken a while for me to get all that out there. The good thing is he threw no interceptions even though he was very close to throwing one. I think incomplete is beter then interceptions n e day. And as you said everyone pretty much knew the passing game wasnt going to b pretty but still we should not have abandoned it n let him get into the game.

  32. 1nOnlyTRB says:

    Thx Joseph

and correction ponder did give up turnovers … no pick 6 tho. But glad TT aint give up any … almosts don’t count … just like TT almost leading us to a come back against SD aint count.

    TRB

  33. josephjjp69 says:

I think i heard tt had a 91.7 passer rating is that right? Ive been wondering what it was but havent got the chance to go and look for it.

  34. monodono says:

I’m not so sure you can actually call this a Tebow come back win, maybe a Tebow tie. He did not lead the TEAM to the win.
If anything I would give the Game Ball to Daniel Fells for His Superman Catch, or DJ Williams for the strip and recovery, or even Prater for a 52 yard winning field goal.

The truth is this was a TEAM Win.

I Loved the play calling, I loved how McGahee ran the ball, I Loved how Dawkins was used and the pressure He brought, I Loved how Demaryius Thomas played in His debut (He will make up for the loss of Loyd if He can stay healthy), and I Loved how the D played the most. Kudo’s go out to Ayres for stepping up and Wilhite for playing His heart out.
Bottom Line is, TEAM Win! TEAM Win! TEAM Win! and I want more please.

    GO TEAM ! ! !

    TIME OF POSSESSION ! ! !

    GO BRONCOS ! ! !

  35. killerkod says:

This game went from the worst I’ve ever watched, to one of the most exciting…………and a thrilling OT victory was awesome to see.

    BUT

I don’t think I can let that overshadow the horrible football we all had to endure for the first 55 minutes. And for all you Tebow fanatics out there who will rest their laurels on TT getting us the victory and he’s the man need to check yourself.

I am by no means Tebow bashing……….props to him for orchestrating the drives to tie the game. I know for sure that Orton would never had done it. But Tebow’s play in the first 55 minutes was dismal at best. He looked lost out there, and couldn’t throw a pass to save his life. It also looked like the players around him were giving up.

He has the legs to scramble, but when he gets pressured, his automatic response is to tuck the ball and run with it, not make space and throw on the run.

Also, his accuracy is something left to be desired…….he missed some wide open receivers.

But, Tebow is a winner, and got the job done, no matter how ugly it had to be. He is still so raw and needs a TON of work, but you can’t argue his intangibles…………he has them in spades.

And the biggest thing that results in the victory is not only the confidence Tebow has built, but the confidence and trust that his teammates now have that as long as 15 is on the field, the game is never over til the final wistle.

I’m really stoked to see if this O can build off this game and get better for next week, cause they’re really gonna need it.

    GO BRONCOS!!

Looking forward to the prediction results………..I think I’m in the mix!!

  36. killerkod says:

    WAKE UP BAY!!! LOL

I’m anxious to see the results of the predictions!!!

  37. killerkod says:

And it’s been mentioned already, and I’ll say it as well……….

What was up with all the blogs yesterday? That was rediculous and I hope it was a one-time thing. It was overkill and way too hard to keep up on the latest blog.

    BRUTAL!

  38. brian_schneider says:

I didn’t get to watch the second half because we were driving back from my parents and I live in the stone age and don’t have data on my phone. From the sounds of it and watching the highlights I really didn’t miss much until the last 3 minutes of the game.

There is a lot of things Tebow needs to work on, we’d all be kidding ourselves if we didn’t see that. I do feel that he’ll get better with experience. He still needs to work on his mechanics and reads to be consistently successful in games. We’re not going to win many games against good teams if we only play 3 minutes of good football. Tebow needs to work hard at these things but for this game at the end of the day we got the win.

I know everyone is going to say … “it was against the Dolphins” … others will say “he won the game” … “Orton wouldn’t have put us in a 0-15 position” … “Orton would’ve given up.” Tebow looks raw, plays raw, but I think has potential, against the Dolphins or not, coming back 15 points down in 3 minutes against any NFL team is something special.

  39. brian_schneider says:

Comes back down to the things we can control. Prater’s two missed FGs, McGahee fumble, some dropped passes (maybe a little off target but you’re a WR in the NFL, catch the darn ball, make an effort not an excuse), Tebow’s reads and decision making, penalties at bad times. So even like when Orton was starting, we need to clean up our game and play as a team better. I can tell you this if we would’ve lost it would’ve been all Tebow’s fault too so the it isn’t just Orton or Tebow it’s the QB position!

  40. killerkod says:

brian……….Other than the final 5 minutes, it was UGLY UGLY UGLY!!! lol

  41. DenverOranges says:

Let’s just enjoy this win, there’s not going to be much more this season.

    Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. killerkod says:

oranges………I’m enjoying the win, no doubt!

But even in victories, we need to be critical of our team’s performance………..and this one is worth a ton of criiticism in many areas.

  43. DenverOranges says:

Were a bad team with an almost rookie QB this kind of game play is to be expected. I don’t see any reason to pick this one apart. We one guys, it was ugly but we won and that’s all that matters.

  44. killerkod says:

I think our D was a bright spot……….even against the dismal Miami O. they could’ve made them look a lot better….that’s for sure!

  45. killerkod says:

Wow, where is everyone this morning? Usually busier than this by now? Worst thing being in the most easterly time zone in north america on a mountain time blog I guess………….lol

  46. killerkod says:

lunhctime for me now……….hope there’ll be more action when I get back.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

killerkod, this figuring out the contest takes time, gotta be patient, and I now know why you were so anxious, you dog, LOL.

  48. CarnageBronc says:

my only problem is that people are not being realistic….I have read on this board time and again, that they hated our offense and the 3 and outs….Orton sucked because he got sacked….Orton UNDERTHREW a completion to a WIDE OPEN Lloyd…All I heard was how, Tebow was the answer…an unstoppable force…when I said in the San Diego game, Tebow looked good when they played prevent, people dogged me, the Texans game, same thing and this week past SAME THING. What boggles me is why teams keep playing a prevent defense. The guy threw for a total of ZERO yards in the 3rd quarter. ZERO!!! In the Sand Diego game, he had ZERO completions until he hit a SCREEN for the TD. I get bashed because I say he is not an NFL quarterback…I just don’t see it. If it wasn’t for a lot of people with I LOVE TEBOW blinders on they would see it too. We made the switch and had BY FAR our worst offensive effort. WITH TWO WEEKS TO PREPARE FOR A WINLESS AND BAD TEAM!!!! THey ran the spread, they involved him in the run game….they called passes down the field. DID YOU SEE HIS DOWNFIELD PASSES? My GOD they were awful. Fells SAVED him on his pass….even the TD to Thomas was a bad throw. He made a great catch. Riley made a heck of a play. Was I happy they won…I sure was. I take a win any day. But I would like consistency from the fans. If a guy stinks, he stinks and Tebow stunk. Had he played a great game, I would have said so. No problems wiht doing that. I think people have really let the emotion of liking Tebow overtake their objective watching of the games. That’s fine though get caught up in hysteria, it is part of what makes the game great I guess. To a point, I think ANYONE who watched the two performances, Ponder in a win and Tebow in a loss will say Ponder right now is a better qb. Will that sustain who knows, but honestly he is. Anyway, I don’t wanna say too much more, because of the whole “negativity” thing. Just saying, call a spade a spade sometime.

    Broncos 18 Dolphins 15

Official score prediction contest week 7 results:

When you have 71 bloggers picking the Broncos to win, you figure one of them is going to be dead on, not the case though, the large majority got blown off in this contest because they totally underestimated the Dolphins D and therefore had astronomical amounts of points scored by our team and you can’t say I didn’t warn you, haha. However this week we had a terrific prediction that was only one point off on each score and considering the weird score that was an incredible feat in itself.

    So here we go:

    1st place:

thecladybunch 17-16, only two total points off and earning him the ever satisfying 7 points. Fantastic prediction you deserve the high seat of Bronco Country for the week. And not only that, but he now kicks Royalty to the curb and passes him to take sole possession of second place overall with 11 points, 3 points behind overall leader oldsouth, congrats!

    2nd place:

WieminCA 20-13, 4 total points off earning an enviable 4 points, his first points in the competition.

Two way tie for 3rd place:

killerkod 20-12, 5 total points off earning his first points, 3 of them.
orangutanblue 16-12, same points off and first points earned in the competition also, 3 big ones.

    5th place:

brian_schneider 23-16, 6 total points off netting him his first point of the competition, 1 point.

Just to point out how difficult this competition really is, this week we had no less than 7 bloggers who were only one point away from scoring, all only 7 points off, one point too many because of Brian. Consolation prize goes to 1nOnlyTRB 24-16, alexanserg same score, Borrachazo C.R. same, baylinorcrush same, denver0723 24-14, UKBroncos 23-13 and RSH 23-17. But no points for none of you, LOL, BRUTAL!

Now as far as the Wall of Shame goes this week, I think most folks on this blog will find it very fitting to find that CarnageBronc made his way up there on his very first entry of the year with a prediction of Dolphins beating us by no less than 10 points!!!, 17-27, and for that dubious effort you earn yourself minus 5 points. Imagine if the game only lasted 55 minutes you would of gone from the WOS to top place of the podium since it was 0-15 then, had to be a horrific last 5 minutes for you, LOL, just joking you know, putting some fun into the contest is all, but I have to say you could of easily won this one, from top of the podium to the WOS in 5 minutes flat, wow, better luck next time.

Score predictions for the Detroit game are now being taken and I will do so through Saturday midnight blog time, no picks on game day ever, no exceptions.

    GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
