Broncos Win in Overtime

October 23rd, 2011 - 2:37pm by Max Henson

After missing two field goals earlier in the game, Matt Prater stepped up and drilled a 52-yard try in overtime to give the Broncos a 18-15 victory in overtime over the Dolphins.

Linebacker D.J. Williams strip-sacked Matt Moore and recovered the fumble setting up the Broncos in prime position midway through the overtime session. After three consecutive runs from Lance Ball, Prater trotted on to seal the win.

Tim Tebow once again engineered a fourth-quarter comeback, throwing two touchdowns in the closing minutes and running in a pivotal 2-point try himself to send the game to overtime tied at 15.

The Broncos improve to 2-4 on the year after securing their first road win of the 2011 season.

Carnage at it again. Why is it ok for every young QB to be a young QB and make mistakes except for Tebow? Peyton Manning went 3-13 his first 16 games and threw 28 interceptions. Colts really should have dropped that guy because he clearly wasn’t an NFL quality QB. Oh wait the ball had a nice pretty spiral when he threw it so it was already decided he would be great in the NFL. Despite the fact that Tim Tebow was a more efficient passer than he was, scored more touchdowns than he did, threw less than half the interceptions he did, won more national titles than he did, and more Heisman trophies than he did… you and a bunch of “experts” want to declare him unfit for the NFL after his fourth start. To me that is every bit as crazy as the blogger who said he was the greatest QB to ever play.

  2. 3rdGeneration says:

Wiemin….I don’t think anyone has seem enough to really know what Tebow will be. You’re obviously a skeptic, which is fine, and what the majority of people outside of Bronco and Tebow Country are. What he does bring is a lot of questions and hope due to his past successes.

Other than the ending that was one of the worse football game I ever watched.

For the first three quarters there was no place to hide at the sports bar no matter how small I made myself.

It was a horrific football display from both team, the battle of the 1-9 teams lived up to its name.

I read some of the posts here even though it’s absolutely insane that with this new way of doing things game time on the blog there is now around 25 blogs to go through if you want to catch up.

    Life is too short.

Thank god for me not taking any score predictions on game day, I would instantly quit holding the contest, crazy, progress they call it I guess…

About the game, unlike some, I thought the play calling didn’t have half as much to do with Tebow’s ineptitude to pass as it did missing Lloyd.

That was the main issue, without Lloyd there all other receivers found out what it’s like to play when there isn’t a #1 WR out there to occupy the D backs. All of a sudden all our receivers including Decker looked below average at best, none of them could get open long enough to give Tebow a good look, and Tebow looked out there plenty, there was nothing most of the time. Of course there are exception, like that long one to Decker where he was wide open and if Tebow doesn’t overthrow him it’s a sure TD, but that was not the norm.

The norm is we completely blew it trading Lloyd for a 5th, and don’t give me the if we didn’t we would of just gotten a compensatory pick at the end of the year, so what, it might of been a 6th, just one round worse than what we got, maybe even a 7th, but if we would of forced him to play out the remainder of his contract here, he would of played his tail off to impress teams for the rest of the year to get the long term contract he wanted elsewhere. It was a no loss situation and EFX made the worse of it, shipping Lloyd out for a 5th at best, a pro bowler, how insane is that, disgusted I was and now we saw the end result of that today, we got no #1 WR, nobody even close, not this year anyway.

And what about all the TEs we all thought we got over here for Tebow, absolutely zero contribution until Fells in the last 5 minutes of the game, mind boggling, TEs are a young QB’s best friends, easy outlets, but no one ever seemed to be open. I said all along not to underestimate the Dolphins D, guess it’s obvious why now, they are way better than an 0-6 team.

Anyhow through after the middle of the fourth I started seeing something I haven’t seen since Elway, a furious comeback, one that I will remember for a long time in this year of many disappointments so far. It was like early Reeves and Elway, Elway being tied down most of the game under Reeves game plan until it was out of reach and then Elway taking it upon himself to take control of the game, just like Tebow did, throwing Fox and McCoy’s playbook out and it was magnificent, for a whole 5 minutes or so and we got out of there with a win, in Miami of all places, but it still doesn’t erase the first 55 minutes or so, it was horrible, but a win is a win and I’ll take it. And there were multiple miracles at the end, it wasn’t all Tebow, it was like destiny, the great DJ play and the onside kick recovery, miracles, I mean all the stars were aligned for 5 minutes, I don’t know what that means but it added up to an unlikely win.

Like Howie Long said after the game, looking at things form the outside it looks like there is no way Tebow is the QB Elway wants to go with long term since he does not fit the QB profile Elway is looking for, performing from the pocket , and like others have said too, the front office is always looking for pieces to add to the puzzle for the long term, while coaches always look for players to win short term so they can be here long term, all that to say to the Tebow disciples and followers enjoy him while you can in a Bronco uniform, because even so he will probably be successful in the NFL, it most likely will be with another team.

And that’s all the energy left I have for tonight so don’t bother arguing my points if you expect an answer as I’m siging out til the morning when I will do the official score prediction results. That game beat me down!

  4. Broncos Born & Raised says:

The bottom line is the guy is 2-2 and has two come from behind wins under his belt. How bout we watch some more games before we declare what he will do in the league. Personally I like what I see and so do a lot of others. The mistakes have to get cleaned up. What about Tim’s work ethic suggests he won’t get better? Baffling.

  5. carnagebronc says:

I know this…if Orton played this poorly they would have booed him…when Miami played real D Tebow was terrible….did u see how many passes he threw that didn’t even come close to the receiver…luckily we won…but they have to get much better….the thing your quarterback does best cannot be run….

  6. BroncosLAX says:

So Tebow is better than Elway for bringing Denver back against the winless dolphins and against SD in the second half and falling up short? GET OVER YOURSELF Gator you are just on Tebows Jock I think he’s gonna be good but you are in love with the guy. I think 2 Superbowls compared to 2 regular season comebacks are way different. And FYI the DRIVE was in the AFC CHampionship game no against the winless dolphins

  7. BroncosLAX says:

One point I will agree on with Carnage that if Orton did play that poorly we would have booed the roof off… But Orton is also a veteran… Tebow a 2nd year guy expect growing pains

  8. Broncos Born & Raised says:

Great post, Bay. I agree with your point about Lloyd, in that now he is not here to draw the best DB and the receivers are sorely missing him. I so hope that you are wrong about Tebow. I hope he does enough to keep us out of contention to draft Luck and even Landry. I think if he can do that he stands a good chance of sticking around. I really don’t know why everyone says Elway doesn’t want him. I’ve never found one quote from him that suggests that. I’ve heard the analysts say that Elway said he’s not his kind of quarterback but I can’t find a direct quote or soundbite to support that. What I have heard is that he is looking forward to working with him this offseason, and that Tim has no bigger supporters than him and John Fox. I believe it until they show me otherwise.

  9. baylinorcrush says:

No arguments from me Carnage that Tebow threw the ball way worse than I have ever seen him and he’s never been that good at it to start with. It was shameful at times, he hit guys standing on the sidelines more often than receivers on the field… I have a monster headache and I really gotta get off this computer now, later.

  10. Broncos Born & Raised says:

I think there were some throws he could have made against their regular D, that he did not because of mental errors. I believe that can and will improve. I also saw some balls that were right on the money getting dropped. And yes I agree that we have to get much better. I just don’t see why it’s decided Tim can play in the NFL.

  11. Broncos Born & Raised says:

*can’t play. I guess it wouldn’t be fair to decide he CAN play either, but the analysis door swings both ways.

  12. Broncos Born & Raised says:

I really don’t see why we even make the comparisons to Orton. Of course we would have booed the roof off. We saw the guy for 27 games, and in that time he didn’t do anything to show us he can lead us to a championship. He’s a 7 year veteran who should not be missing most of those throws. And I know if he were down 15 points with three minutes go ahead and place that L in the W/L column in advance, thanks.

  13. worldchampions says:

Great job Tebow! You are now on your way to be a world champion and win the Superbowl. Here is pointer for you. Next time you throw that little release pattern to Fells put some zip on it and lead him with it. Don’t float it to him that will prevent a pick six you had plenty of time to throw that ball.

    God Bless!

  14. armadillo_orton says:

gentleman, the fact is during crunch time when the game was on the line TEBOW produced and won. How many times has Tony Romo choked in those same situations. So in 4 starts Tebow has a 15 point comeback, and a 17 point comeback. That sounds pretty freaking good to me. Winners produce under pressure, and Tebow produced. Now all he needs is for McCoy to take off his skirt and call better plays. The legend has begun….. What makes a guy great is producing during the clutch after a bad game….

  15. seweatherman1 says:

For those of you that have not taken the time to listen to TT post game press conference, take the time to listen to it. You will hear who he puts the blame on for his and the teams poor performance for the first 55 minutes of the game. This press conference is just over 11 minutes I think, but very good and informative.

  16. RabidOrange says:

What I want to know is what Dawk and Champ said to Tebow at the end.

  17. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Carnage u are right. Horrible football … if it wasn’t for the spectacular finish that game woulda gone down as one of the worst most pathetic games ive ever watched.

wasnt all on tebow tho. The coaches play calling sucked. The receivers are young and new. There was chemistry of about 13 days and it showed … I expect it to get better as it goes … but u are right it was bad play and u are not being to hard on Tebow.

But lets stop comparing getting a game like this from a 2yr pro to Ortons 7 years. If tebow is dowing this 5 years from now …. shooot me. And Orton has bad games and can never wiggle his way out … TT can.

On the year Tebow so far has more than 2 passing TDs I believe and no interceptions. He is 2-2 in the game he has started … and he is playing guy in his 4th start … the coaches need to trust him more, and he needs to work on his throwing himself.

Sidenote, kudos to Orton … didn’t pout and I believe offered some words to TT at some point. Dawk and Champ were in his ears as well.

Hey Mike, sorry bro … didn’t see your emails till right now … hope u were able to find everything ok … comepletely forgot to send u a feed. Bye threw me a bit off routine but I hope u were able to find one and I actually heard of that site for the first time today. TRB

  19. Atwater4HOF says:

I don’t mind Lloyd being shipped out. If he’s not in the long term plans then why keep him around. Decker or Thomas needs to be groomed into a #1 wideout so having Lloyd gone allows for that. It’s not popular, but its what rebuilding is all about.

Hopefully McGahee isn’t out for an extended period of time with the hand fracture. Moreno did show some nice bursts on a few runs but McGahee has been so solid for us.

As always, I try not to jump to conclusions or revelations after a game. Tebow will improve. Improve enough to satisfy Elway before next April? That is tough to tell.

It’s always a good day when Denver puts one up in the W column. Ugly win, but a win nonetheless.

  20. Atwater4HOF says:

4 starts is not enough of a sample size. Many QBs struggled their entire rookie seasons and turned out to be good pros. Knee jerk reactions have been a common occurence on here.

Following the live game blog, people actually felt Fox was intentionally making Tebow look bad. Give me a break. A restless fanbase is often times an ignorant one

  21. BroncosLAX says:

Weatherman – I did watch it and was saying the first 55 minutes Tebow didn’t perform… the last 5 he toof=k the team on his shoulders. Tebow accepted responsability and that he needed to step up and the D played great. Tebow was saying that so idk why some guys like Gator are saying the opposite when Tebow admitted he needed to perform better

  22. Atwater4HOF says:

Colts franchise should be embarassed for their performance on National TV tonight. Absolutely pathetic, guys get paid way too much to go through the motions as they are right now.

  23. RabidOrange says:

LAX, gator just says that because he’s got Teblinders on. As far as he’s concerned, the team consists of Tebow and a pile of pads and jerseys that just take up space. Ignore him. I tried earlier to talk sense and he doesn’t hear it. Another “fan” who is only here because Tim is.

  24. BroncosLAX says:

Colts should be embarrassed… this is the team qhich they put around Peyton Manning? I have new respect for him

  25. BroncosLAX says:

I hear you thats just frustrating I was born and raised a fan and love tebow but i keep my head on straight lol

  26. Atwater4HOF says:

Please no one utter the phrase that McDaniels was a better coach than Fox is again. You lose all credibility in making a statement like that.

Fox recognized his mistake with the Orton/Tebow situation. Instead of being stubborn, he made the change unlike McDaniels. We actually have a run defense under Fox. We can actually run the ball under Fox. Minus the Green Bay game, we are competitive week in and week out. That is what you ask for when handing the reigns over to a new coach.

Anyone who EXPECTED Fox to lead us to a 12-4 or 11-5 season after the catastrophe known as the McDaniels era was just doing so out of wishful thinking. Extreme wishful thinking. Our roster has limitations, we are not capable of consistently beating teams like the Packers, Chargers, Ravens, etc. week in and week out. Not yet, but another draft or 2 and some good free agency periods and we have that cabability.

I love my Broncos but man some of the radical fans on here really frustrate me.

  27. Atwater4HOF says:

Manning might be the first player to miss an entire season and receive MVP votes lol

  28. armadillo_orton says:

Memo to Broncos receivers, when a qb is under pressure and running for his life you break your route and get into his line of vision. Today it seemed our receivers would continue their pattern without breaking it. That’s where we are really going to miss B. Lloyd.. The dude really wanted the ball, and would come and get it… D. Thomas looks lost to me. Definitely not the same cat from before the injuries… But NEXT up Detroit.. Go ahead and pencil another win in gentleman… 3 and 4 after 7 games… I’ll take that …

  29. BroncosLAX says:

Atwater I was arguing against it lol it was some Gator guy who said McD was better lol and yes got to miss Manning right not

  30. Atwater4HOF says:

Judging coaches and QBs used to be a 3 year rule. The 3rd season is the make or break period for a QB or coach. We can’t even give Fox or Tebow 6 games in one season before making make or break statements on their careers in Denver.

Anyways, I loved Prater’s ability to man up and hit his 52 yarder to win the game. That showed me a lot from a mental toughness standpoint.

Also loved how we used Dawkins today. I said it in the offseason, he should be used like Polamalu. Blitzing and flying around along the line of scrimmage. Not dropping back into coverage as he did when he was younger. Great coaching move by Fox/Allen in that regard.

  31. BroncosLAX says:

And agreed Atwater I wish everyone could love the Broncos and be smart also lol

  32. Atwater4HOF says:

Oh I know LAX- I was just rereading posts from earlier trying to get caught up on what has been said throughout the day.

I don’t understand how Gator can rationally make that statement lol

  33. BroncosLAX says:

Rational is absent sometimes haha did you read strand calling me stupid for arguing with him? Some fans just cant… process maybe lol

  34. Atwater4HOF says:

Thomas looked so rusty today. That’s to be expected though. Same with Royal. Agreed that our young wideouts need to have more field awareness and breaking off their routes. That’s a chemistry issue with Tebow that I don’t expect to continue all season. Tebow obviously keeps plays alive much longer than Orton so an adjustment I’m sure will be made.

  35. BroncosLAX says:

2 – 2 in the world seriesboys I want Texas and Josh Hamilton to win! Loveeverything that guy stands for and where he has come from

  36. Atwater4HOF says:

Yea a lot of fiestiness back and forth today especially after a victory lol

  37. RabidOrange says:

Atwater, I don’t think that gator is rational in that regard. lol. Anyway, I’m with you on your assessment of Prater. I can’t imagine what it’s like having to come out and kick a game winner in OT after missing 2 shorter ones earlier. Mental toughness is right!! Have to give kudos to Champ for shutting down Marshall, for the most part. Also, even though Moore was picking on Wilhite all night, the man never gave up. Very proud of the D tonight…

  38. BroncosLAX says:

Tebow makes emotions run high lol even if you like Tebow I guess with some if you say a bad word against him then you…. are not a Broncos fan lol. But a good amount of fans are accepting what Tebow did wrong and right… Bay hit everything in his post and I think weatherman did also

  39. Atwater4HOF says:

D definitely played well again today. Love Wilhite. Champ versus Megatron next week is going to be a fabulous matchup. Champ always seems to rise to the occasion. Suh is going to be headache for us, especially if McGahee is a no-go.

  40. BroncosLAX says:

Rabid I still think it did show we need DB dpth for sure. I don’t get why Moore was yanked for Carter.. IDK maybe it is just me but Carter seems always out of place and he isn’t bigger than moore…

Can we bring back Darcel McBath and Sign Darren Sharper?

  41. buck484 says:

The outcome was super but the journey was pure ugly. Champ and the D were absolutely fantastic, giving us a chance to win.

  42. Atwater4HOF says:

Tebow definitely has strong emotions tied to him.

Tebow needs to be treated for what he is. A 5 game starter, essentially a rookie. Some people think that he can do now wrong, others just jump on every incompletion to say “I told you so” on not being able to cut it. Growth is what matters. Is he doing things wrong in week 15 that he was doing wrong today? That’s when raise my eyebrows begin to raise.

  43. RabidOrange says:

We do need depth, but I was really pretty pleased with Wilhite. He seemed to be right there all day. Even when the passes were complete, he was there to stop the WR from getting the yards after.

  44. BroncosLAX says:

Very well said I just want to hold off on handing him my heart as a Broncos fan… he needs to play 60 minutes of consistent football because what we saw today was worse than what we got from Orton… except for the final 5 minutes if everyone is being honest at least.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/33102/the-myth-and-legend-of-tim-tebow

  45. Atwater4HOF says:

Moore will be ok. He just needs to learn that tackling in the NFL is different than college. Allen wanted better tackling from the back end since we were going against a run heavy offense that doesn’t exactly stretch the field. Moore is the better pass defender at this point. I’d expect Moore back in the starting lineup against Stafford and the Detroit offense.

  46. Atwater4HOF says:

Very true, obviously Tebow is a great student of the game and I’m excited to see the adjustments he makes personally on a week to week basis.

  47. Randy2191 says:

The saints colts game was ridiculous .. Anywyas idk how you all are talking bout how poorly Timmy played in the end he is a huge portion of why we won.. Wait for a loss to talk crap

  48. BroncosLAX says:

I still really dont like the Carter pick I really dont idk why but he doesnt have any impact… McBath was young a playmaker and tons of potential idk why you cut him for 4th round talent

  49. Randy2191 says:

Can someone tell me why Rahim Moore didn’t start

  50. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Amadillo Bay Bay adapted in the endzone to get the td catch. He tried … they are all just too young for me to give em too much crap … with most of them with no offseasons and etc. But I expect more out of them.

Colts or Miami … who shall get luck . dun dun dun …. The difference one man, albeit a franchise QB … makes.
