Broncos vs. Steelers: Second Half Live Blog

November 9th, 2009 - 8:07pm by Zach Eisendrath

Q3 15:00: The second half begins with a 22-yard kickoff return by Stefan Logan. The Steelers will start the ball at their own 17 yard line.

Q3 13:38: Roethlisberger completes a seven-yard pass to Ward on first down. On 2nd and 3, Mendenhall battles his way through contact and gains six yards to pick up a Pittsburgh first down at the 30 yard line.

Q3 11:30: Roethlisberger looks downfield, but Kenny Peterson makes a move into the pocket and hits the ball out of Roethlisberger’s hand. Robert Ayers recovers the fumble and races down the sideline for a 54-yard touchdown. After an extra point by Prater, the Broncos regain the lead.

Broncos 10, Steelers 7

Q3 12:22: Medenhall rushes to his left on first down. On second down, Roethlisberger goes play action and find Ward at midfield for an 18-yard gain. The ball is at the Denver 49 yard line.

Q3 11:35: Out of a five-wide set, Roethlisberger pump fakes to his left and then finds Holmes for a 16-yard completion. The ball is now at the Denver 33 yard line.

Q3 11:09: Prater sends the kickoff five yards deep into the end zone. Logan again elects to take the ball out of the end zone, returning the ball to the Pittsburgh 20 yard line.

Q3 11:08: Roethlisberger goes play action on first down and completes a 18-yard pass to Wallace, giving Pittsburgh a first down at its own 38.

Q3 10:08: On the next play, Mendenhall finds a big hole along the right side and rushes 24 yards before being pushed out of bounds by Wesley Woodyard at the Denver 38.

Q3 9:09: After Roethlisberger connects with Holmes for a 35-yard reception down to the Denver 3 yard line, the Pittsburgh signal caller finds Ward in the back of the end zone for a three-yard touchdown. Reed connects on the extra point and the Steelers have regained the lead.

Steelers 14, Broncos 10

Q3 9:04: Reed’s short kickoff lands in the hands of Spencer Larsen, who returns the ball to the Pittsburgh 40 yard line.

Q3 8:22: Orton throws a bullet pass to Royal, who slashes across the middle for the 16-yard gain. Denver has the ball at the Pittsburgh 44 yard line.

Q3 7:32: Given the hanoff on first down, Moreno loses his balance and loses one yard on the play. After a bit of controversy whether or not Orton’s second down pass incompletion to Daniel Graham was an incompletion or a fumble, the officials rule it a forward pass. Orton can’t connect with Marshall near the right sideline on third down and Berger is on to punt.

Q3 7:20: Josh Barrett makes a nice play to keep Berger’s punt out of the end zone and the Steelers will start their offensive posession at their own 3 yard line.

Q3 7:14: INVESCO Field was rocking coming out of the TV timeout, as Kenny Peterson fired up the crowd near the end zone line. On first down Mendenhall followed his blockers for a gain of three.

Q3 5:42: Roethlisberger goes play action on second down, completing a 14-yard pass to Heath Miller to move the chains. On 1st and 10 from the Denver 20, Mendenhall burts throw a hole along the right side, gaining 28 yards.

Q3 4:44: On first down, Roethlisberger finds Miller across the middle for a four-yard reception and the Steelers are now in Denver territory, at the 48 yard line. After an incompletion to Wallace along the left sideline, the Steelers face a 3rd and 6.

Q3 4:43: Before the snap, the Broncos elect to take their first timeout of the second half.

Q3 4:02: Roethlisberger again makes a play downfield, finding Wallace on third down for a 15-yard gain to move the chains. Pittsburgh has the ball at the Denver 33.

Q3 2:42: After Mendenhall gains eight yards on first down, Holmes cuts across the middle for a 10-yard reception. The ball is at the Denver 15 yard line.

Q3 2:27: Roethlisberger fires to the end zone, but misses his target and Andre’ Goodman snatches the ball at the goal line for an interception. After an illegal block in the back call on the return, the Broncos’ offensive unit starts with the ball at their own 10 yard line.

Q3 1:22: Marshall makes his ninth catch of the night on first down, gaining 15 yards to move the chains. Orton then completes a three-yard pass to Tony Scheffler — bringing up 2nd and 7.

Q3 0:18: After Buckhalter gains two-yards on a rush up the middle, Orton takes a hit in the pocket and completes a short pass to Brandon Stokley. The play ends one yard short of the first-down marker and Berger is in to punt.

Q3 0:00: On the final play of the third quarter, Logan returns Berger’s 50-yard punt to the Pittsburgh 30 yard line.

End of the Third Quarter: STEELERS 14, BRONCOS 10

Q4 15:00: The Steelers open the fourth quarter with a reverse to Wallace. Wallace rushes along the left sideline, gaining three yards before being met by a group of Broncos.

Q4 13:20: Mendenhall picks up one yard on second down bringing up 3rd and 6 from the Pittsburgh 34 yard line. Roethlisberger looks deep on the play. He overthrows Wallace along the right sideline, forcing a Pittsburgh punt.

Q4 13:09: Royal return’s Sepulveda’s punt 15 yards before being pushed out of bounds by the punter at the Denver 33 yard line.

Q4 12:57: On first down, Orton goes play action and looks for Marshall along the right sideline. Marshall tips the ball to himself, but his feet aren’t in bounds. On second down, Orton is pressured and misfires to Graham, bringing up 3rd and 10.

Q4 12:04: On third down, Orton looks to his left and throws a short pass to Marshall. Marshall can’t escape a Pittsburgh defender, and he gains only three yards on the play forcing a punt by Berger.

Q4 12:03: Berger’s punt goes 24 yards. After being downed by Kenny McKinley, the Steelers will take over possession at their own 36 yard line.

Q4 11:52: Mendenhall gained two yards on first down and then Roethlisberger completed a short pass to Ward for two more yards on second down bringing up 3rd and 6 from the Pittsburgh 45 yard line.

Q4 10:32: With pressure coming, Roethlisberger throws a seven-yard completion to Holmes — giving the Steelers a first down at the Denver 48.

Q4 9:04: After a four-yard gain by Mendenhall, Roethlisberger fires incomplete to Limas Sweed on second down — setting up 3rd and 6 from the Denver 44.

Q4 9:03: Sitting patinetly in the pocket, Roethlisberger fires deep to Miller. The pass is off target, however, and the Steelers are forced to punt. Royal signals for a fair catch at the Denver 9-yard line, and that is where the offensive unit will take over possession.

Q4 8:31: On first down, Buckhalter rushes for no gain as Troy Polamalu sniffed out the run. On the very next play, Polamalu made an even bigger play, picking off a Kyle Orton pass and giving the Steelers’ offense the ball at the Denver 25 yard line.

Q4 7:49: Mendenhall rumbles his way down the field for six yards on first down. On second down, Mendenhall goes backwards as he tries to make his way around the right sideline. He was drilled by Brian Dawkins, resulting in a six-yard loss.

Q4 7:03: Avoiding pressure on 3rd and 10, Roethlisberger rolls out of the pocket to his right and finds Wallace slashing to the middle of the end zone for a 25-yard touchdown.

STEELERS 21, BRONCOS 10

Q4 6:58: McKinley returns Reed’s kickoff 21 yards and the Broncos’ offensive unit takes over at the Denver 26. Under heavy pressure, Orton throws incomplete on first down.

Q4 5:58: After Royal can’t snag a low throw by Orton on second down, the Broncos face a 3rd and 10. Operating out of shotgun, Orton looks downfield. Orton had the ball hit out of his hand by Keisel and the officials ruled the play a fumble. Casey Wiegmann recovered the ball, but the Broncos are challenging the ruling on the field.

Q4 5:57: After reviewing the play, the call on the field was reversed. Orton’s pass was ruled incomplete, so the Broncos will not be charged with a timeout. Berger is set to punt from the Denver 26 yard line.

Q4 5:52: The Steelers start their offensive possession at their own 26 after an illegal block in the back penalty. Mendenhall is taken down for a loss of three by Champ Bailey on first down.

Q4 4:55: After a false start on Mendenhall, the speedy back more than makes up for the call on the very next play — weaving his way downfield for a 36-yard run. The Steelers have the ball at the Denver 46 yard line.

Q4 3:22: Mendenhall gains one yard on first down and then Mewelde Moore finds a big hole along the left side on second down, gaining 12 yards and giving Pittsburgh the ball at the Denver 33.

Q4 2:27: Moore gains two yards rushing to his right on first down. After Moore gains another two yards, the Broncos use their second timeout of the half.

Q4 2:26: As Roethlisberger surveyed the line of scrimmage, the Steelers elected to use their first timeout of the second half.

Q4 2:11: Operating out of shotgun on 3rd and 5, Roethlisberger rolls to his left and completes a seven-yard pass to Ward to keep the chains moving.

Q4 2:00: Mendenhall continues to run hard. He just burst his way up the middle of the field for an 18-yard gain, giving the Steelers 1st and Goal from the Denver 3 yard line heading out of the two-minute warning.

Q4 1:35: Mendenhall receives the handoff on 1st and Goal and he is quickly stopped for a loss of one by a charging Mario Haggan. With Willie Colon injured on the play, the Steelers are forced to use a timeout.

Q4 1:34: The previous play is under review in the both as there is question whether or not Mendenhall fumbled as he was being taken down on the carry.

Q4 1:27: After review, the call on the field was upheld bringing up 2nd and Goal for the Steelers. Mendenhall gained one yard on the play and the Broncos elect to use their final timeout of the second half.

Q4 1:20: Roethlisberger throws a quick pass to Ward on 3rd and 3, and the veteran wide receiver heads into the end zone. After an extra point by Reed, the Steelers now lead by 18.

STEELERS 28, BRONCOS 10

Q4 1:02: Reed booms his kickoff into the end zone, forcing McKinley to backpedal on the play and down the ball. Starting at the Denver 20, Orton completes a 12-yard pass to Marshall on first down.

Q4 0:33: Orton completes a four-yard pass to Buckhalter. Buckhalter was hit hard by James Harrison on the play. Slow to get up, the Broncos are given an injury timeout — which results in a 10-second run off on the play clock.

Q4 0:15: With Orton and the Broncos facing a 3rd and 6 from the Denver 36, Carter records his second interception of the game.

Q4 0:00: Roethlisberger kneels to end the game, as the Steelers come away with the road victory at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

That’s why they make the $$$$$$$$$$$ and we’re all armchair QB’s.LOL

  2. baylinorcrush says:

I feel better now, we can quit whining because olderthandirt says Orton will take us to the playoffs. I’m impressed with your confidence, I still say let’s try to win one game, like Sunday. Winning takes care of everything, the rest is just, well, blowing in the wind…

  3. broncos20 says:

lol…easy folks, above .500 is always a great standing in my book..only when it thins out should it be a cause for concern. We play one of the toughest schedules this season. If the Saints, were playing our schedule I bet they’d have lost 1 or 2 by now..aha..
we cant become arrogant like those Chargers..

  4. BeastFromEast92 says:

Olderthandirt,we can’t have a huge running game if we can’t spread the defense out and put a little fear in them from the deep ball. And personally I don’t want a QB that just makes the playoffs, then loses ,we need one that can win the tough games like last night.

  5. BeastFromEast92 says:

Winning heals ALL wounds. GO BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. BeastFromEast92 says:

Our Oline needs to go back to zone blocking, good for cutback running backs like Moreno, our backs are not power backs like McD is trying to make them.

  7. BeastFromEast92 says:

We always had one of the NFL’s best run blocking Olines, then they changed blocking schemes,McD likes power running.

  8. tnalen66 says:

When the schedule came out I had us losing this game. I had us at 5-3. We will be fine. We have alot easier schedule down the road. i say 11-5 at worst. We need to get a punter. Field position has killed us all year. We have great coaches who will fix things, We played the AFC championship teams and were in it until midway thru the 4 th quarter. The O has to give the D some rest.

  9. BeastFromEast92 says:

11-5 or 12-4 would be a good record for us, it will be good enough for us to win OUR AFC West title back, but then what. If we plan to go deep into the playoffs we’ll have to find a way to win against tough defenses, not just Orton and the Oline a total team effort. We had
    (2) good punters I think Kern went to Tennessee, and Colquitt went to KC?

  10. broncofan2639 says:

Someone please answer me. Do the Broncos have an “OFFENSE”? If they do where are they? When a defense is on the field most of the game they are going to get tired I don’t care how old &/or young they are. Ortin is not getting it done on third downs, he can’t get away from the rush & he’s not as accurate as coach McD thinks. WR screens & quick slant passes are not going to work all thru the game unless we have a deep theat. We need to get the TE more involved in the passing game, also the RB’s. We have to good TE’s & RB’s that can catch passes. McD’s game plans are not working or we don’t have a QB (Ortin) that can run the offense. Now I understand why Ortin was in & out of the starting job in Chicago. Need to get he whole offense involved the the game, & give the defense the rest the deserve.

  11. broncofan2639 says:

Got in rush in that last sentence. Hope you know what I’m trying to say. Don’t want to affend anyone.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

BFE92, the Colquitt in KC is his brother, I think the one we released is available.

  13. BeastFromEast92 says:

DAMN WHERE IS HE, i’LL BEG HIM BACK.LOL

  14. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Baylin,you are right,I personally should’ve known that.Hell I follow Tennessee college ball,they both played there.LOL

  15. The JoEL says:

    hey

  16. Broncosforlife80 says:

    thank goodness for Washington!

  17. TheRoyalBeast says:

Lmao…al this time i thought that the colquit in KC was ours…hhahahahaha, a family of punters….its like the mannings….except they punt LMAO

That was great….lol….im done laughing but seriously if he is available lets get him back I really liked him preseason or get Kern back…soemthing….Berger aint cutting it….both in ravens game and steelers…and It aint like he is adjusting to a scheme or anything…job of a punt never changes…you punt the ball and try to give the other team as bad a field position as u can utilizing aim, hang time, etc….he is just a bum in my book

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

TRB,at least the BEAST got fed.LOL

  19. TheRoyalBeast says:

    BFE

Yea he did, but unfourtunately even he couldnt save us…he sure did his best gaining YAC yards tho…Im happy they saw the value in him and tried to get him the ball more…first 100 yard game like i predicted. Put the ball in the hands of your play maker…i liked that much but it would be nice if he had a QB that can deliver it to him on routes 20+ lol

  20. baylinorcrush says:

TRB, unfortunately with the development of Orton, or lack thereof it might become a hurdle as far as us signing Marshall long term. I mean the kind of player he is, I know he won’t be happy with lack of production, specially if everything he catches is under 20 yards. I hope I’m wrong for you guys, since I know he is your man. LOL.

  21. BeastFromEast92 says:

Baylin,we lose Marshall we lose one of the best wr out team has ever seen, yes he’s that damn good.

  22. BeastFromEast92 says:

    TRB,I agree 100%

  23. baylinorcrush says:

We can’t get Kern back, I think he signed with Tennessee! We screwed ourselves big time on this move. No matter how good McD is, he hit the panic button too early (like Orton in the pocket come to think of it, LOL) on this one and didn’t think it through, IMO.

  24. footballMANIAC says:

I hope that Marshall can work out a new contract with the team soon. We can’t lose him!

  25. baylinorcrush says:

Marshall with his head screwed on right, which he is attempting to do the last few weeks, you are right, he is one of the best out there and the sky is the limit. He has to keep his feet on the ground though, not on the field, lol, but in life in general. Come to think of it I think Moreno needs to take a couple tranquilizers before each game and I bet you his game improves 10 fold, LOL.

  26. BeastFromEast92 says:

He’s been talkin to Rod Smith,I think he’ll be alright now,and Moreno needs to focus more or something, hell I don’t know whats wrong with him.LOL

  27. baylinorcrush says:

footballmaniac, to tell you the truth right now I am more concerned over Orton’s play than Marshall’s contract.

  28. footballMANIAC says:

Moreno just needs to chill. I think he’s all up tight about living up to the expectations of a first round draft pick. Once he has a good game and his confidence gets a boost, he’ll be fine.

  29. baylinorcrush says:

Hence the tranquilizers… That was the whole point, but you’re right.

  30. footballMANIAC says:

Yeah, I got the joke :) I agree that Orton’s play is more concerning- I’m sure that the organization will handle Marshall accordingly, but Orton’s play needs to get back to where it was! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, but Orton would be an awesome QB if he had elite arm strength- he has everything else already whether it’s the brains or the accuracy. And playing in Chicago didn’t help because it taught him to fear defenders with how often he was hit.

  31. baylinorcrush says:

you’re right that Moreno needs to chill, not right that he will be allright after one good game. IMO. He is having a very slow development from college to pros. The game is way too fast, so the holes are not there like in college where he basically could explode into the holes without having to follow blocks. In the pros, the players are so fast the holes are plugged before you get there so you have to be patient, follow your blocks first, THEN pop into the holes they provide. To this point he has no idea how to do that. A big disappointment to me so far, considering he was the first RB picked in the draft. I think the Beanie Wells guy is doing much better.

  32. footballMANIAC says:

I thought Beanie Wells was out for the year. Didn’t he break his leg or something?

  33. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, know what you mean about Orton and the arm strength. Unfortunately, arm strength is almost like speed, you can’t teach it, you either have it or you don’t. I’m very concerned over his lack of confidence in the pocket, not good for a team leader, and you make an excellent point over the fact he had no Oline to speak of in Chicago, so he was in fear of sacks all the time, I guess.

  34. baylinorcrush says:

I thought I saw him play Sunday.

  35. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah he played against the Bears, and I liked what I saw but you are correct, he did not play for the first 5 games of the season, has played in the last three.

  36. baylinorcrush says:

correct meaning he got hurt, but not out for the year. The guy looks promissing for the Cardinals.

  37. TheRoyalBeast says:

    HAHAHAHA, Baylin…

Dunno what I would do if Marshall wasnt a Bronco anymore :-( , I would probably survive but it would hurt man lol and yes with his head screwed on straight he is one of the deadliest recievers in the league even when double covered.

While im also more worried with Ortons play I hope we sign Marshall long….Money talks and I think we know his value, Royal is awesome but is Awesome when Bmarsh Draws double coverage…need him around, very effective on many levels Double coverage, Blocking, YAC, etc

I really want Brandstater to be the QB always have, he can do low risk high percentage passes, mobility is WAY better and Arm is way better too. but McD has never really given Orton a chance to step outside of his comfort zone a bit…maybe because he know it will result in another left handed pass for and INT so he stripped away his improvisation card lol….either way, I just hope we get it together in the passing game.

  38. TheRoyalBeast says:

nice comment Baylin on the arm strength thing…somethings cant be taught like speed, either u have or you don’t…either you born with it or u acquire it REAL early in life….accuracy on the other hand can be worked on…so if Ortons problem is that HE IS INCAPABLE of throwing deep in a fashion that wont take 5 years for the ball to get there…then thats a problem that cant be taught.

  39. TheRoyalBeast says:

    whatever happened to this guy?!?!?

Career: Purdue career leader with 2.43 interception percentage (23 interceptions in 947 attempts) … ranks fourth with .581 completion percentage, fifth with 947 passing attempts, fifth with 550 completions, fifth with 6,247 passing yards, fifth with 6,451 yards total offense, seventh with 32 passing touchdowns, 11th with 119.8 passing efficiency and tied for 14th with 23 interceptions … has three 300-yard passing games (two of them 400-plus) … third quarterback in school history to start three bowl games, following Mark Herrmann (1978-80) and Drew Brees (1998-2000).

2004: Named 14th-best player in the nation (No. 2 in the Big Ten) by ESPN The Magazine … preseason third team All-American and No. 3-ranked quarterback in the nation by Phil Steele’s behind Matt Leinart (USC) and Jason White (Oklahoma) … ranked No. 4 by The Sporting News and Street & Smith’s … preseason Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year by Lindy’s and The Sporting News … named Most Fearless Quarterback in Big Ten by The Sporting News … tabbed Most Accurate Passer, Strongest Arm and Coolest in the Clutch in Big Ten by Lindy’s … selected Best Passing QB in Big Ten by Street & Smith’s.

“named Most Fearless Quarterback in Big Ten by The Sporting News … tabbed Most Accurate Passer, Strongest Arm and Coolest in the Clutch in Big Ten”

What happened to that guy?!?!?!? lol, cuz that aint the Orton We know. I want that guy cuz our orton isnt fearless, doesnt have the strongest arm, isnt coolest in the clutch and is sometimes accurate…….

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EE2CxDWm1sc&feature=player_embedded#

some nice deepish passes in college and pros….he is a mystery to me….maybe McD just needs to take off the trainign wheels but some of you might be right….probably post traumatic stress disorder from getting banged around too much in Chicago lol

  41. BeastFromEast92 says:

Moreno ia a better back than Beenie wells, and he showed it in college,he had 2734 yards and 30 td’s in his last 2 seasons at Georgia. He also had 53 receptions for 645 yards.Great numbers!!!!!He isn’t showing it now though, maybe he gets going soon, like a lot of other players need to get going too,it’s the 2nd half of the season now.

  42. BeastFromEast92 says:

    is not ia

  43. BeastFromEast92 says:

Good crop of QB’s coming outta college next year, maybe McD might wanna take a look at’em?????If not maybe give Brandstater a shot.

  44. BeastFromEast92 says:

We’ll see how Orton works out the rest of the season I guess.

  45. Greatness007 says:

HE has lost nothing from those highlights. Like said and someone before me. He is out thinking himself. That’s why you see all those check down plays or throwaways. He is always thinking ” I’ll get it on the next play. His character might be his downfall. You how pissed off a elite QB would be right now?? It seems like the Whole O is mad coming off the field. Except him, he is ashamed gotta show some fire though. He has skill, but where is the want to. I know McD used to be a QB an all. Don’t go on the field thinking ” He gonna pull a Jordan and suit up.” He coaching. he not coming off that sideline. He picked the right path. This is yours. If Orton know he can do these things. It’s time to voice them loudly to McD. Cuz you know he gonna be like” Ok you can huh?? We gonna do it. If you mess up. You got me to deal with.” He is already dealing with him now.

Everyone sleeping on Washington is not a good idea. There D is like 10th. While their O is like spoiled hog moss. They have BIG PLAY POTENTIAL. I seen a Cowboy team play around with them for 3qts. In the 4th score 13-0. 2 bombs of 60 and 70 yards later. 14-13 Redskins wim. lol I don’t wanna see that.

  46. Greatness007 says:

Also everyone looking towards the draft. Mcd is not gonna pick McCoy, OU kid, and I don’t think Clausen either. If we do? It will be Jake Locker, Tony Pike, or Tebow.

  47. stevecan2 says:

Moreno will develop into a solid running back, but I don’t see him tearing up the stat sheet this year or next. The truth is there are not that many rookie running backs that come out of the gate and light the league on fire. Don’t be fooled into expecting too much from him right out the gate, it is unfair to him. I know for sure Terrell Davis was only a special teams player his rookie year. I can’t remember of the top of my head if he started his second or not. But with a couple of years to get used to reading blitzing defenses and making good decisions we know where he ended up. It is ironic to me that with the expectations going into the season for the team, how a 6-2 start to the first half never got rid of that for so many of the fans. Because face it, they never changed. Why else would a 6-2 team’s fans be reacting this way. Good games come along and bad games happen. I predicted 9-7 no playoffs before the year, after the 6-0 start that only changed to 11-5. So were the last two games really that much of a surprise, if you answer that honestly you will say no. I hope other teams fans don’t follow these boards too closely.

  48. That foe Happy says:

well im the new kid in the block my name is Will aka Happy so how them rookies looking so far

  49. The #1 says:

Steve in Terrell ‘s rookie yr. He started at RB at the beginning of the Reg season. Preseason he was on ST. The tackle against San Fran got him noticed by the coaches and other players. His rookie yr he ran for 1,200 and change.
