Broncos vs. Steelers: Key Plays

January 9th, 2012 - 12:41am by Stuart Zaas

Third-and-12 at the Denver 18 (14:56, 2nd quarter): After a 21-yard pass to Eric Decker was overturned via instant replay challenge, momentum seemed to be on Pittsburgh’s side. Denver faced a third-and-long from deep in its own territory trailing 6-0, but this was the play that swung the momentum back to the home side as Tim Tebow found Demaryius Thomas deep down the left sideline for a 51-yard gain. The big play set up Tebow’s 30-yard touchdown pass to Eddie Royal two plays later that gave Denver a 7-6 lead.

Second-and-10 at the Pittsburgh 20 (13:21, 2nd quarter): Ben Roethlisberger connected on a 52-yard pass to Mike Wallace, but the Broncos successfully challenged the ruling. Instead of a long gain into Denver territory, Pittsburgh faced a third-and-10 and would go three-and-out, turning the ball back to the Broncos.

Second-and-7 at the Denver 30 (12:15, 2nd quarter): The Tebow-to-Thomas connection struck again, this time for 58 yards. Again, two plays after the long pass play, the Broncos found the end zone. This time, Tebow kept it himself and charged up the middle for an 8-yard rushing score to give the Broncos a 14-6 advantage.

3rd-and-16 at the Pittsburgh 14 (9:23, 2nd quarter): With heavy pressure from D.J. Williams, Roethlisberger heaved a pass down the field that ended up in the arms of Quinton Carter. The rookie safety returned the interception 9 yards to the Pittsburgh 18. The Broncos pushed the ball inside the Steelers 5-yard lie before settling for a 20-yard field goal to increase their lead to 17-6.

Second-and-6 at the Denver 35 (4:31, 2nd quarter): Tebow hit Daniel Fells over the middle for a gain of 40 yards to push Denver into scoring position. Prater added his second field goal of the game to give the Broncos a 20-6 lead.

Third-and-4 at the Denver 40 (0:39, 2nd quarter): With the Steelers at the edge of field goal range, Roethlisberger couldn’t handle a high snap from Doug Legursky. Roethlisberger recovered the loose ball, but not before Pittsburgh lost 23 yards on the play. Instead of having a chance to add points before the intermission, Pittsburgh had to punt.

First-and-10 at the Pittsburgh 23 (8:12, 2nd quarter): Roethlisberger threw what replays showed to be a backwards lateral to Mike Wallace. The whistle blew when the ball hit the ground, making what could have been ruled a Broncos fumble recovery non-reviewable. The play remained an incomplete pass, and Pittsburgh would go on to drive down the field for a touchdown to make the score Denver 20 Pittsburgh 13.

First-and-10 at the Denver 48 (7:43, 4th quarter): With the Broncos driving down the field looking to extend a 23-16 lead, Ryan Mundy forced a Willis McGahee fumble that was recovered by LaMarr Woodley. Pittsburgh used the turnover to knot the game at 23-23 after Roethlisberger threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jerricho Cotchery on the team’s ensuing drive.

First-and-10 at the Denver 45 (0:29, 4th quarter): Pittsburgh had moved the ball into Denver territory in the final minute of regulation when Elvis Dumervil stip-sacked Roethlisberger for a loss of 11 yards. Roethlisberger recovered his fumble, but the 11-yard loss led to a last-play Hail Mary attempt that resulted in another Broncos sack.

Ayers got the Defense fired up,he said he was gonna bring it.
    And he did!

well said alex (105 post). exactly right on. all of it. indeed a winnable game so long as tebow plays well again. hopefully this game did give him some confidence and if we just stay in the game by not making mistakes, we can pull it off. really can. and i disagree bay with your assessment of tebow. not trying to appear overly harsh on tebow, i swear, but he was not accurate all night last night. he still missed quite a few passes and others were still off target. he simply has to get better with his accuracy to be an elite nfl qb and sustain a high level of play all season. I sure hope he does but as of now he has not sustained that level of play. 3 of ten on third down wont cut it. 10-21 being your best game will not cut it. he was under 300 yds in regulation. but progress was shown and i hope like hell her keeps it up, because if he does then Superbowl here we come!!!!

  4. BeastFromEast92 says:

I wore my Orange TT jersey around town today, got a lot of stares, but no one said anything…..good for them, lol.

Not many Bronco fans around these parts.

  5. BeastFromEast92 says:

Well Champ missed a sure int in the endzone, and Doom missed out on recovering the strip,so Tebow is allowed to miss on a few passes.Besides a couple were dropped too.

  6. Orange_Crusher says:

I don’t know… I went back through the posts and didn’t see where Turtle man was being too aweful rude to anyone…

He was just saying “I told you so” to a couple guys that were previously ribbing him pretty hard for believing in Tebow when they didn’t….

I thought it was just and fair and just fair for him to get his laugh in while he was feeling good…

    Anyways..jomho….

  7. BeastFromEast92 says:

Haven’t heard anyone talk about how their TE,Miller torched us in the 1st half, the Pats bread and butter is their TEs……

Allen better do some good game planning Saturday night!

  8. seweatherman1 says:

BFE, after Tebow took over we only lost one road game. Buffalo week 16. Won all the others.

  9. BeastFromEast92 says:

LMAO@OC……I was talking to Turtle for a while,he apologized for being obnoxious…I don’t think he meant any harm.

  10. BeastFromEast92 says:

Thanks weatherman,I thought we did good on the road this year.

  11. alex4serg says:

I would say that if their is a single player that can come up huge and win this for us it is Ayers.

We already have Miller and DOOM. Everyone knows that. NE will account for that and have some kind of blocking scheme they hope will stop those two. If Ayers can put another huge game together, and be that third guy in our front 4 or so that they have to account for on every play …. Well …. something has to give.

  12. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Ayers 2 sacks,Bunkley 1 sack…….along with Doom and Millers’ sacks,I think we had 5 or 6 sacks,the whole Dline played great,except for a couple of big runs,imo.

  13. seweatherman1 says:

They can’t account for everybody. That is for sure.

  14. Orange_Crusher says:

BFE, where I live there is a LOT of Bronco fans. You and your Tebow jersey would be like wearing Orange camo here, you would blend in with the scenery…LOL

I went to the mall last Saturday and I counted over three dozen Bronco jerseys in the one half hour I was there. Thats not counting all the Bronco caps.. That would be too many to keep track of… haha and yes I mean the ones on people not in the stores….LOL

Theres even three people on my street that have Bronco flags out in front of their houses and one guy even decorates his whole yard Broncos with blowup players and all kinds of bronco yard decorations for every game…

I LOVE ME SOME BRONCO COUNTRY!!!!!!!

  15. S.D.Bronco30 says:

This may have been covered already, I don’t always have time to go back through everyting. but Bean was just over 50% completion yesterday. I think he was 22 of 40. Whay is it that when these guys do that it’s no big deal but Tebow does it and wins and they still say yeah but he was 50% completion. I know the others have done much better at times but they have had years in the league. Pretty dumb double standard.

  16. alex4serg says:

BFE: That tom brady becoming “just that guy” after a bronco loss was just hyperbole.

  17. Orange_Crusher says:

Does anyone know when Miller will get the cast off?

I was hoping that he would show up to the field without the cast last night. Maybe he can get it off before the NE game?

  18. Louisianabroncofan says:

sd its because tebow does it consistently, others don’t, and the ones who do do get fire their way. you wont find long term quality starting qb’s with an average completion rate under 60%, much less under 50. the commentws on tebows comp % are made in response to the “look, he’s an all world qb” comments by ppl who are of course entitled to that opinion, but will be challenged by people like me.

OC,I see a lot of Orange around here, but it’s Tennessee Vols Orange,(a lighter shade) I root for them too,but my Bronco Orange is much brighter, and stands out.

I was wondering about Millers cast too?

  21. seweatherman1 says:

OC I think he made the comment a couple weeks ago that he was going to wait until the season was over to get the pins or whatever removed. So, I don’t know if they will allow him to go without the cast for added protection.

  22. jdoms24 says:

hey guys i dont blog much but what if the oc for denver gets to throw happy and we see way to many incomplete balls and not enough running to burn any clock that may be a great possibility and brady will have way more possesions than he deserves. i just hope they start with a good combination of some first down runs SOME!!! and some screens on first downs and secondand whatever third calls for take what the defense gives you

  23. BeastFromEast92 says:

lbf,Elways career pass completion was 56.9%.
    I think he was a quality QB,lol.

  24. Louisianabroncofan says:

in my defense i said MOST!!

  25. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Just picking at you bro,lol.

  26. S.D.Bronco30 says:

I know lbf, and I agree with that assessment. He does it consistently, but again he is in the growing stages. I don’t think he is all world but i am a Tebow supporter. I do always say he nees to improve his passing game, but people need to give him time and the opportunity. You are right though some just get all excited and don’t always keep a real perspective on things, they forget his flaws. I am a realist I try to see it all!

  27. Louisianabroncofan says:

    crap.. i meant MOST!!

    Quick Take: Broncos at Patriots
    By James Walker

Three things to know about Saturday’s AFC divisional playoff game between the Denver Broncos (9-8) and New England Patriots (13-3):

    1. Patriots get the easiest draw: Last week the AFC East blog did a poll asking readers which team they thought was the easiest opponent for the Patriots. Overwhelmingly, respondents selected Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos — and for good reason. The Broncos are the easiest possible matchup of the four AFC teams playing on wild-card weekend. New England manhandled Denver in Week 15 and cruised to a 41-23 victory. The chances of Tebow outdueling Patriots quarterback Tom Brady on the road in the rematch are very slim. I think this is as close to a free pass as New England can get in the postseason. The Patriots were close to hosting the reigning AFC champion Steelers, who beat New England in the regular season. But Denver did New England a big favor by knocking out Pittsburgh in overtime. Now, the Patriots have a much easier path to get to the AFC Championship Game.

    2. Josh McDaniels factor: The timing for New England to rehire Josh McDaniels is impeccable. The former Broncos head coach will rejoin the Patriots’ staff this week as an offensive assistant. McDaniels eventually will replace offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien next season when O’Brien goes to Penn State. But McDaniels will be key this week to help the Patriots better understand Denver’s personnel. McDaniels coached Denver from 2009-10 and was responsible for Denver drafting Tebow. McDaniels should be able to provide plenty of inside knowledge on Tebow and many players on Denver’s roster.

    3. One-and-done pressure: Expect there to be a lot of talk of New England avoiding a third consecutive one-and-done postseason. The Patriots’ Hall of Fame tandem of quarterback Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick were stellar in the postseason from 2001-07. But lately the pair are 0-2 in their last two playoff games and haven’t won in the postseason since the end of the 2007 season. It’s been a four-year drought for Brady and Belichick and there are no excuses this year. New England is playing well, healthy and has a favorable matchup in the divisional round. The Patriots could do themselves a huge favor by beating Denver and getting that one-and-done monkey off their back.

  29. Louisianabroncofan says:

i was gonna say under 56.8% but typed too fast

  30. brian_schneider says:

It’s not just his completion percentage but in the manner in which he achieves that completion percentage. While there are drops he consistently under/over throws his target. Most QBs suffer from a little bit of inaccuracy and more drops, while Tebow suffers from a lot of inaccuracy and a few drops.

    Tebow-Thomas play needs a name

    January, 9, 2012
    Jan 9 3:40PM ET

    By Bill Williamson

Every memorable, great NFL moment needs a name, right.

    It’s kind of football law.

The Immaculate Reception (sorry, Raider Nation), the Catch, The Drive.

So, what are we going to call the 80-yard pass play from Tim Tebow to Demaryius Thomas on the first offensive play of overtime to give the Broncos a stunning 29-23 win against the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers? It was the longest touchdown pass in playoff overtime history.

Come up with some names (I know you’re a creative bunch). The folks on SportsCenter came up with Hail Demaryius. That’s a solid start.

And, as always, keep ‘em clean, there are kids out there.
