Broncos vs. Seahawks: Second Half Blog

September 19th, 2010 - 3:36pm by Eric Detweiler

HALFTIME FESTIVITIES As part of the Broncos’ U.S. Military salute, the U.S. Marine Corps’ Silent Drill Platoon performed for fans at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Both teams are still currently in the locker room as the second half kickoff awaits.

Q3 15:00: The Broncos will receive to start the second half. Perrish Cox takes Olindo Mare’s kick about 6 yards deep in the end zone. He makes it out to the 5-yard line before being dragged down. The Broncos offense takes over there with Moreno taking a first down handoff. He picked up 2 yards. On second down, Spencer Larsen hauled in his first catch of the game. The fullback got four more yards, setting up a 3rd-and-3 from their own 12-yard line. Klye Orton hit Brandon Lloyd for a 13-yard gain and a first down to the 25-yard line. On the ensuing first down, Orton went deep for Jabar Gaffney but couldn’t connect. On second down, Orton went down for a 3-yard loss on a sack.

Q3 12:13 On third-and-13, Orton tried to dump a pass off to Buckhalter, but the veteran running back bobbled it and couldn’t haul it in. That set up a Britton Colquitt punt. Golden Tate returned the punt back to the Broncos 22-yard line. It was a 63-yard return of a 63-yard punt. Robert Ayers limped off the field after the play.

Q3 11:51 Taking over with its best starting field position of the game, the Seattle offense began with a run by Justin Forsett. The Broncos defense snuffed it out, stopping Forsett in the backfield. The Seahawks went right back to Forsett, who found a little more room this time, picking up 4 yards. On 3rd-and-8 from the Broncos 20-yard line, Hasselbeck threaded a completion into Deion Branch. The veteran receiver picked up 9 yards and a first down. On first down, Hasselbeck couldn’t connect with John Carlson with Mario Haggan on the coverage. Robert Ayers has returned to action.

Q3 9:47 Hasselbeck hit Ben Obamanu over the middle for an 11-yard touchdown on the following play. Mare’s extra point was good, cutting the Broncos’ lead to 10 points just more than five minutes into the second half.

BRONCOS 17, SEAHAWKS 7

Q3 9:46 After the Seahawks’ first scoring drive, Mare kicked deep to Perrish Cox. This time the kick sailed through the end zone — through the uprights, actually — for a touchback. The Broncos take over from their own 20-yard line.

Q3 9:45 On the ensuing first down, Knowshon Moreno’s carry picked up 4 yards. A pitch to the running back on second down resulted in a yard loss. On third down, Orton took a shotgun snap and misfired for Lloyd but Marcus Trufant was flagged for pass interference, continuing the drive. The penalty went for 14 yards.

Q3 8:15 Buckhalter picked up 2 yards on his first down carry. On second down, Moreno took a screen pass. The running back was trapped by a pair of defenders in the backfield but he stepped around them and was off the races. He was finally pulled down 45 yards down field by Earl Thomas. On first down, Orton hit Royal for 4 yards to the Seattle 12-yard line. Buckhalter’s second down run brought 1 yard. On 3rd-and-5 from the Seattle 11-yard line, Orton took a shotgun snap and hit Daniel Graham off the right side. He was wrestled down at the 1-yard line, setting up 1st-and-goal.

Q3 4:40 Moreno tried the left side on first-and-goal but was stacked up. On second down, he was stopped short again. On third-and-goal from inside the 1-yard line, leaped and fell into the end zone for the touchdown. Prater’s ensuing extra point was good, extending the Broncos lead back to 17 points.

BRONCOS 24, SEAHAWKS 7

Q3 3:31 Matt Prater’s kickoff flew through the end zone for another touchback. The Seahawks start from their own 20-yard line.

Q3 3:30 Hasselbeck started the drive finding Golden Tate down the sideline for a 52-yard reception. The rookie tight roped the sideline and cut back before being brought down by Dawkins. He took a shot at the end zone on the next play, coming up empty. After an incompletion, Hasselbeck and the Seahawks faced 3rd-and-10 from the Broncos 28-yard line. The quarterback hit Forsett with a screen pass. He picked up 8 yards, bringing up 4th-and-2 from the 20-yard line. The Seahawks will go for it. Hasselbeck tried to hit Deion Branch in the back of the end zone on the play, but the receiver couldn’t make the play over Champ Bailey. The Broncos take over at their own 20-yard line.

Q3 1:54 On first down, Orton’s screen pass to Demaryius Thomas lost yards. Moreno’s second down run got back to the original line of scrimmage. Before the third down play, Aaron Curry jumped into the neutral zone for a 5-yard penalty. On third down, Orton hit Thomas for 9 yards and the Broncos 19th first down of the day. The play ended the third quarter.

Q4 15:00 The Broncos began the fourth quarter with a first down at their own 34-yard line. Moreno was stuffed for no gain on the first play of the new quarter. Orton then hit Thomas for 14 yards and another Broncos first down. Correll Buckhalter slammed ahead for 2 yards on the ensuing play. Then Orton scrambled to buy time but could not connect with Thomas. On third down, Orton hit Royal for 10 yards and a first down to the 40 yard line.

*INJURY UPDATE* Broncos cornerback Andre’ Goodman has a thigh injury. His return is questionable.

Q4 11:09 After a pair of short runs, Orton hit Gaffney for 6 yards and a first down to the Seahawks 27-yard line. Buckhalter got the next two carries, picking up 6 yards combined. Before the third down play — which will be the 14th of the drive — the Seahawks called their first time out.

Q4 9:17 Seattle cornerback Kelly Jennings fell down on a deep pass to Demaryius Thomas. The rookie easily hauled in the catch — his eighth of the game — for a 21-yard touchdown. The Broncos now lead 31-7 with 9:11 left in the game. Orton now has 292 passing yards and two touchdowns. Thomas has 97 yards receiving in his Broncos debut.

BRONCOS 31, SEAHAWKS 7

Q4 9:11 Prater nails another touchdown, forcing the Seahawks to start from their own 20-yard line.

Q4 9:10 Leon Washington gets the first down carry for the Seahawks. He picks up 7 yards. On second down, he gets 4 more yards. On third down, Hasselbeck hits Mike Williams for 8 more yards. Then, the quarterback hit Branch for another first down. On the next play, former Bronco Ben Hamilton was flagged for holding. Ben Obamanu found room in the Broncos defense to pick up a 19-yard reception on the next play.

Q4 6:21 The Seahawks continued their impressive no-huddle march with a 22-yard pass from Hasselbeck to Carlson. Rookie Cassius Vaughn brough him down. Two plays later, Hasselbeck finished the drive himself, scrambling 20 yards up the middle for the touchdown. Mare’s extra point cuts the lead to 31-14 with 5:59 left in the game.

BRONCOS 31, SEAHAWKS 14

Q4 5:59 The Seahawks line up for an onside kick. The bouncer skips high and out of bounds. The Broncos will take over at the Seahawks 43-yard line.

Q4 5:58 Knowshon Moreno gets dropped in the backfield on the first play of the next drive. He loses 6 yards. On the next play, Orton hits Brandon Lloyd for 15 yards, setting up 3rd-and-1. Buckhalter gets wrapped up in the backfield on the next play, bringing up 4th-and-4 yards to go from the Seattle 37-yard line. The Broncos call their first timeout before the play.

Q4 3:42 The Broncos send out Britton Colquitt to punt. His kick is faircaught by Golden Tate at the 6-yard line. That’s where the Seahawks will take over.

Q4 3:37 On first down, Hasselbeck looks deep for Tate. The pass sails long with Cassius Vaughn covering. The Seahawks quarterback dumps a pass off to Butler for a 3-yard gain, bringing up third down. Hasselbeck’s third down pass sails incomplete. The Seahawks will punt. Eddie Royal is back deep for the Broncos. His first return attempt of 2010 ends with him being slung back by Ben Obamanu for a loss. The Broncos start at their own 19-yard line after a personal foul penalty on Eric Decker.

Q4 3:15 Moreno tries the right side on first down, picking up a yard. Seattle uses a time out.

Q4 3:11 Orton fires incomplete for Dan Gronkowski. Correll Buckhalter slides forward for a 4-yard gain, bringing up 4th-and-5. The Broncos will punt.

Q4 2:45 Colquitt hits a 53-yard punt and Tate brings it back 19 yards to his own 42-yard line. The Broncos are challenging, hoping the referees decide Tate was touched as he fielded the ball on his knees.

Q4 2:44 The play stands as called. The Broncos are charged a timeout. Leon Washington got the first down handoff. He picked up 3 yards. On second down, Hasselbeck fired incomplete. On third down, the quarterback hit Branch for the first down. That brings up the two-minute warning.

Q4 2:00 On first down from the Broncos 46-yard line, Hasselbeck hit John Carlson for a 4-yard gain. On the next play, Perrish Cox stepped in front of Hasselbeck’s pass for the defense’s third interception of the game. Cox picked up a personal foul for unsportsmanlike conduct after the play, but the Broncos can just take a knee and close out the game.

Q4 1:14 Orton kneels the ball three times to run out the clock and close out the win. The Broncos win their 11th straight home opener and improve to 1-1 on the 2010 season.

Official results of our first week of score predictions:

Unbelievably enough this week we have a perfect score prediction, and all of last year we never had any, some one point off predictions, but nothing like a dead on correct score, obviously very rare to say the least.

The first place and score prediction of the week champ title goes to:

    1st place:

wild horses 31-14!!!!! Congrats man, I bow to you and so should everyone else, you are ruling above us mere mortals for the entire week to come, you deserve it!

2nd place, and only one point off, nearly as awesome:

    camharland 31-13

Tie for 3rd place and only three points off:

    dcftcollins 31-17
    rebelbronco 31-17
    royalbroncofan1 31-17
    bronco-blaze 31-17
    broncosfreak30 28-14

Also a huge note of congratulations to UKbroncos for guessing the correct spread even so it doesn’t count towards the competition, 17 points, with a 27-10 score prediction.

Other notable predictions, also not counting in the competition, the correct Bronco score:

    strandoftds 31-27
    steveatwater5 31-23

    And the correct Seahawk score:

    baylinorcrush 24-14

And for the week’s Wall of Shame award, this is no contest this week, it goes to:

dontdewittit who picked the Seawhawks to win 27-20!!!!!!!

FYI, the top 5 places (7 this week because of the ties) and the wall of shame recipient will be kept in the records to finalize the overall year standings at season end, all others were unfortunately not close enough to be considered. The wall of shame will be used as a tie breaker if necessary.

By example, last year I won the title with 3 firts places, 1 third, 2 fourth, 1 fifth and one wall of shame and the runner up was a tie between louisianabroncofan and royalbroncofan1 with 2 first place finishes each.
No prizes, it’s all about pride or shame. Are you man enough, haha.

You can place your scores for next week game starting tomorrow Monday and ending Saturday pm.

    Hey All,
Great game thoughouly enjoyed every minute of it realy gives me hope!!!! I was in a bar in SF with lots of Cowboy and San Diego fans and it was great to be able to cheer my butt off!!!
There were a few elements we need to clean up but that is for a later blog. for today I am just impressed they came in an impressive team that put some fear into me and by the end of the third quarter my heart was just swelling with pride and joy!!! Lot of good elements. Don’t have the denver paper guess I can look online but curious to know how many yard recieving and running Knowshon had.
I am still not 100% a believer although I have high hopes he is an SEC Georgia back but if any one has those stats for a guy outa state I would apreciate it.
It was great to have my Baily jersey on when he made that pick. He realy played well. I was kinda dissapointed with there second touchdown because it hurt our Defenses numbers and I thought they played a preaty good game especialy second through fourth quarter.
    But overall GREAT!!!!
and oh by the way Baylion I picked the correct Denver score and was only three points off Seattle. my pick had to of gotten me fifjth place?????
    Go BRONCOS!!!!! GREAT WIN

  44. baylinorcrush says:

3rd place was only three points off and it was a 5 way tie, meaning if anyone was 4 points off they would be in 8th place, but only top 5 places count, no need to list them and you were 6 points off with your 28-17 pick, sorry you did not have the correct Denver score, no kudos to you this week, many guys had it closer.

That goes for all the other bloggers who might come on here thinking they might of said some score and should be in here, I write them all down carefully and you guys will just have to trust me with the results, just guess closer next time is all I can tell you.

  45. Yovi21 says:

hey bay! THATS why I wanted to see BAYBAY so bad…he has big play potential written all over him!

  46. broncosfreak30 says:

What a great game!! I knew it was going to be a win for us and the thing that I most wanted to see, as everyone has been trying to argue with me about it, is how good Thomas was going to be and he didn’t surprise me at all! I knew exactly how he plays and the speed and physicality he brings to our team!! Everyone kept whining that we should have taken Dez or kept Marshall and that Bay Bay can’t run routes…..Well stats speak for themselves and Dez only had 56 yards for his debut and no TD’s and Bay Bay had 98 yards with a TD and absolutely looked brilliant and showed everyone why he was the #1 receiver taken out of the draft!!!

I love it when my boys show their worth!!

Other than that, great effort all around on the team!! It’s funny because I think that our defense didn’t really do all that good today and they still produced 3 INT’s with Dawk, Champ, and my boy Cox who got his first!!

If Bay Bay isin’t rookie of the week I will be very surprised!!

  47. sndvl says:

Dez returned a punt for a score today. Tho still a losing effort. DMT sure came to play. Proved me wrong! And I couldn’t be happier, to be wrong.

  48. rebelbronco says:

Great win Broncos! Enjoy it, but only for a moment, as Peyton and the Colts on on their way into town. If I were the Colts I wouldn’t even have passing plays in the book this week. I would just have Peyton hand the ball off to Adai up the middle all day long. We still have a major weekness in run defense and special teams coverage. We will have to get penetration up the middle from Bannon and Williams to pressure Peyton and disrupt the run game to allow DJ and Mario to make plays against the run. I have yet to see that occur this season once! Now we have to hope that Goodman and Bailey’s injuries are not severe. If we don’t have them on the field Sunday with no pass rush and young players in the secondary watch out! Peyton will be licking his chops with that opportunity!.

  49. killerkod says:

Great to see a victory for our team. Our O looked fantastic. Orton, when given time, can shred the D up bigtime. I loved seeing all those 3rd down conversions, eating up the clock and making for long drives.

The one area that still concerns me bigtime is our kick coverage. Seems as though they forget how to cover and tackle and giving up huge returns. I’m sure that will be addressed this week.

And what a debut by Thomas! Wow, that guy looks like a beast out there. I think he is really going to elevate this offense even further. I don’t miss Marshall at all, and that feels great to say. What a waste though, to sign in Miami. He’ll be the highest paid decoy in the league. We’ll see how long it takes before he blows up cause he’s not being thrown to. What’s the point of having a weapon out there like that and not have him be the go-to guy? It won’t be long before he makes a media spectacle over it! haha

    Big challenge next week……CAN’T WAIT!

    GO BRONCOS!

  50. baylinorcrush says:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly:

    The Good:

Well, the good is going to win out today! First and foremost one of the easiest game I’ve had the pleasure to watch in a long long time, jumping to a two TD lead early and never reliquinshing the lead after that, it doesn’t come much easier than that, at least for us under McD.

    On O:

Thomas did show why he was picked #1, and to set the record straight I was one of the early strong voice here before the draft speaking against getting Dez to who cared to listen. I was then glad we got the best specimen WR out there, then as time went on I got bummed out about his injury and is non participation in basically the entire off season, which makes the game he had all that more impressive, the guy does know how to get open, it doesn’t seem as if his lack of running routes in college had much impact, at least agaisnt the Seawhaks, who yesterday seemed to present only a limited challenge. That being said, the guy out there looks just like a good Marshall, if you know what I mean, all the good physical prowess, none of the crap antics, obviously overall the greatest improvement for us on the field yesterday, 8 catches for nearly 100 yards!

Orton had a very good over 300 yard day, 25 out of 35 for 307, 2 TD no INT’s. Congrats to Orton, so glad that his having grown in this O is not temporary, he is the real deal for us now, and Tebow is rightly taking his spot in the shadows for now where he belongs, very happy to see that the Tebow hoopla is dying down in the media, last week at Jacksonville he was the center of attention because he is a home town hero there, but this week, even so some fans chanted his name in special situations, he was not a worthless game factor like last week, and that’s a positive.

Royal is the player for us that he was two years ago, and his resurgence is coming from the slot, with him and Decker there if Royal goes down, no way we needed to keep Stokley, just saying.

Moreno had a productive day through the air with 67 yards in 4 catches, I don’t care how he gets his yards as long as he does.

My boy Lloyd does have some kind of hands, this guy will go far.

    On ST:

Obviously Vaughn’s steal of the ball while on his back was a huge momentum switch play, specially that it came soon after the Bailey INT when the Seahawks were ready to score. That was what set the tone for the day. Nice to have you Cassius.

    On D:

It doesn’t get much better than that when the two best players on the field each get an INT, Bailey and Dawkins still both bring it and are the true leaders of our D. Cox joined in the fun with one more INT, turnover galore.

To close up the good stuff, it was nice to see that coach didn’t draw the spotlight negatively on the sidelines, even so everything was rosy. We’ll have to see how he handles under duress, maybe his wife told him how much of a fool he made out of himself last week, haha. Maturity on the sidelines is a must, keep it up coach.

    The Bad:

I’ll keep it real short, on O we still are awful at running the rock, only 65 yards, and on D we are still not stopping the run, 109 yards against us even so they were in a situation most of the game falling behind where they had to throw the ball a lot, makes you wonder how we’ll look once teams really want to put the pedal to the metal on the ground against us, like the Jets, the Titans and the Ravens, scary thoughts there.

    The Ugly:

Nothing worthy of reporting in this section, aren’t you glad….
