Broncos vs. Seahawks: Quotables

August 19th, 2012 - 12:42am by Stuart Zaas

Head Coach John Fox

On QB Peyton Manning’s performance
“I was pretty pleased with the first half. Other than the 0-3 turnover margin, I thought we did pretty good to take the lead 10-9 before the half. You would have liked it to be better as far as the points because we dropped a couple points off with filed position. Again, something to build on and something to get better from.”

On contemplating going on fourth down before the end of the half
“We thought about it but in these games, kind of based on first, you like to have the lead and you like to win when your ones are out there so the more sure thing was the field goal.”

On the defense in the first half
“I thought we were a little shoddier. We came in the game a little light on defense as well and that kind of showed as the game progressed but I think it’s fairly evident we have a lot of work to do in that area.”

QB Peyton Manning

On his overall thoughts on the game
“It’s obviously disappointing that we turned the ball over three times—two interceptions on my part. No excuse for that. I thought we did move the ball well at times and took some long drives. [We’ve] just got to do a better job of finishing drives and have to eliminate the turnovers and keep our defense out of bad situations.”

On his interceptions
“Every interception has its own story, [and] nobody really wants to hear it at the end of the day. A quarterback signs the check on every ball that he throws. There’s an old saying that the most important part of every play is to possess the ball at the end of that play. That’s the quarterback’s job. I have to do a better job of that. Two interceptions tonight—two in the red zone two weeks in a row … just can’t have it. Tipped balls … whatever it is … just can’t have it. I’ve got to find a way to protect the ball better and ensure we get some kind of points when we’re down there in the red zone.”

On the Broncos’ offense
“I thought the pass protection was excellent tonight. Twenty-three attempts in the first half is a lot of passes, against a good defensive front for Seattle. I thought the guys up front really battled hard, and the receivers made some good plays with the ball and some good runs after the catch—ran some good routes. So, there are some things we can build on but, obviously, some things we can improve on.

“I thought our execution of it, and our communication in that was pretty good. We just have to just finish the little things—finish plays and finish drives. It’s something you have to do.”

WR Eric Decker

On what he takes away from this game
“I think in the first half we had too many turnovers. I thought we moved the ball well. The defense kept us in the game. It was 10-9 at half. Credit to them, we could have had a touchdown at the end of the game—a couple dropped passes from us, myself, like I said, turnovers again. Stuff to learn from. That’s what preseason Is all about. You can take the good and the bad, you learn from it and just try to get better and try to get it out of your system before the season starts.”

On the importance of the preseason
“That’s the beauty of preseason. It’s a test trial for the season, I think. We’ve got a lot of stuff to work on. It’s a good time to work off those kinks. I think with how the game ended today, we found out a lot of stuff we do need to work on, some weaknesses, there are some strengths there too. You’ve got to build off those. I think overall, unfortunately, we don’t like the outcome of the score but you can always take from this experience and learn from it.”

On how comfortable he was in the no-huddle
“Very comfortable. I think that’s something that we’re trying to expand and use to our advantage- just to be able to get to the line, call a play and play fast. We want to get up and play fast, that’s our goal. We’ve got to establish ourselves in the running game and just do everything fast.”

RB Willis McGahee

On how he performed
“I might’ve had a little mishap on the first series, on the third-and-one, but other than that, I was pleased with it, but I’ve still got to do better.”

On if a game like this could help the team
“It’s football, you’re not going to have a perfect game. We didn’t have a great game this game. You’ve got to give it up to Seattle, they played good. They make money just like we make money. They’re going to come out there and play harder. They won their battle. We’ve got a lot of things we need to work on, offense and defense.”

S David Bruton

On the two punts he blocked
“It felt great. Just to put on the film that I’m a threat. Putting in the film study to know the opponent and his weakness and exploit it to my advantage.”

On what he saw on the plays when he came up with punt blocks
“The first one, I actually went up and under, stuck him and got him underneath and just put the long arm out there. The second one I wasn’t even supposed to rush. But I just bull rushed him and got to the punt. Stuck the arm out for that one too.”

DL Derek Wolfe

On his confidence
“As far as confidence, it’s just another obstacle. You have to build confidence and that comes with experience. So this is only my second game. I think I played like 40 snaps tonight. It was just good to get there. I had a long drive where I got a little gassed. It just shows that it’s not college. I got welcomed to the NFL today.”

On how pleased he is that the first defense still hasn’t given up a touchdown
“But still, we still let them run on us. They ran the ball. We have to win on second down. That’s what it comes down to. I blame myself for some of that because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time sometimes. Just get better every day, that’s what we have to do. We have to come back next week and get better.”

On the defense’s continuity
“I think we’re jelling really well. Our communication is good and everything. They’re helping me out because I’m new. We have a really tight-knit group here. We’re going to grind together and get better.”

Thanks for the article OT… I really am trying to stay away from Jets stuff because its driving me nuts but if hes going to be yelling at people I want to see it! He didn’t do that last year and its only preseason. Did he really blame his receiver for his under thrown ball?

  2. tlcat06 says:

Gag me… I hate it when Joe Buck and Troy Aikeman call Broncos games. Maybe they’ll hate on us less this next game?

  3. killerkod says:

I think Matt Hasselbeck is a great vet for Locker to lean on too………He understands the whole situation and will try to help the kid succeed.

But OT……………we haven’t seen the “Top-Secret Wildcat” in a game yet……………that’s the answer to all the jets offensive problems! LMAO

  4. killerkod says:

Joe Buck is a horrible announcer………….he’s so boring.

I can’t get enough of NY Jets bashing… I never really was bothered by them until that buffoon Rex Ryan took over, and started running his mouth..

I saw the play cat, he under threw a wide open WR, and after the play he motioned to him, suggesting that he should have come back for the ball, which is ridiculous, because the WR would had to of changed directions, and come OUT of the end zone to dive and catch it…

  6. OrangeTsunami says:

*to dive and attempt to catch it. There is no way he would have been able to.

  7. tlcat06 says:

I haven’t seen any of it, ive only watch the Broncos and Colts which were eeriely similar so I had funny dreams last night. Crazy! I mean there are times a receiver could come back to the ball but that doesn’t seem like one of those times…

Kod, I think Hasselbeck is ready to teach and not start. I don’t see him kicking or screaming. Sure he is probably frustrated but he himself said how good he thought Locker was.

  8. killerkod says:

yeah, I think he knows his starting days are behind him now……..I’ll never forget his, “we’re gonna score” comment that blew up in his face……….hahaha

  9. killerkod says:

wow, the broncos/cards game doesn’t come on here til 12:30am……….I’ll be PVRing that one and watching the next day. No starters will be touching the field in that one anyways so I think I’ll be able to wait til morning. haha

  10. tlcat06 says:

Crazy Kod! Next week they play @ 2 mountain time?

Lol kod. I do think Tebow is a threat in the red zone, and maybe short yardage situations, but he is not a full time QB in this league. It’s also had to take out your QB in favor of someone else getting the reward, and you have to move the ball to be in position for red zone looks.. Seems as if Rex’s gastric bypass surgery may have had an effect on his brain as well…..

Cat – I hate the national media’s coverage of Tebow and Jets, but the local media (radio) is great when it comes to bashing the Jets! And I agree there are times a WR can help out a QB and come back for a pass, but this was most certainly not one of those times, as it wasn’t just under thrown, he threw it right into the ground. Hill was so wide open, that Tebow could have lofted it up there, given his WR a chance to come back for it..

*it’s also hard to take out your QB

OT, neither term really fits… I’m not sure if it has to do with simple reading comprehension, or the tendency on here for people to hold a grudge, but it seems hard for people to let go of things…

People were unfairly blaming Tebow for many things last year, when all he did was come on the field and win us a Division title and Playoff Game… We Traded a very polarizing player and to many it was not a popular move to bring in an aging QB coming off a full season of missed play (and to those that say ‘blah, we only got a fourth and sixth for Tebow’ I ask you, what did the Colts get out of Peyton… NOTHING, he was so undesired there he was simply cut)

Then, when the vocal part of the fan base starts crowing Superbowl because of one signing it is taken as near blastephamy to point out that the guy has not been up to par… When toughted as the so-called GOAT then consistently throwing behind recievers someone should say something… I understand it’s not a popular viewpoint (same as defending Tebow) but I guarantee my tune hasn’t changed in the slightest. I’m neither Hypercritical or hypocritical, ‘Just Telling it like it really is’ (I believe it popular term here). We played poorly in nearly every facate, short of ST specifically the punt rush and tackled like they forgot how.

Let’s Hope they come around and this is not a sign of things to come this season, but with the schedule the Broncos have they will not be able to make mistakes and still win ball games…

  15. OrangeTsunami says:

No reading comprehension problem here, all I was saying is that you are now are so critical of the whole team, which is your prerogative, I just don’t remember you being like that last year through all of our deficiencies.

I don’t want to rehash last year (as it’s been discussed ad nauseum), but I agree Tebow gave us a spark, much like we’ve seen in years past when a struggling team makes a QB change. I also admit Tebow brings some intangibles to the table, but he most certainly was not 100% responsible for our success. Had Barber not run out of bounds, or had we not received massive help from the rest of the AFC West, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.. Tebow’s a good kid, but unfortunately, I think his NFL career has already peaked. Time Well tell..

    *time will tell
