Broncos vs. Seahawks: Quotables

August 19th, 2012 - 12:42am by Stuart Zaas

Head Coach John Fox

On QB Peyton Manning’s performance
“I was pretty pleased with the first half. Other than the 0-3 turnover margin, I thought we did pretty good to take the lead 10-9 before the half. You would have liked it to be better as far as the points because we dropped a couple points off with filed position. Again, something to build on and something to get better from.”

On contemplating going on fourth down before the end of the half
“We thought about it but in these games, kind of based on first, you like to have the lead and you like to win when your ones are out there so the more sure thing was the field goal.”

On the defense in the first half
“I thought we were a little shoddier. We came in the game a little light on defense as well and that kind of showed as the game progressed but I think it’s fairly evident we have a lot of work to do in that area.”

QB Peyton Manning

On his overall thoughts on the game
“It’s obviously disappointing that we turned the ball over three times—two interceptions on my part. No excuse for that. I thought we did move the ball well at times and took some long drives. [We’ve] just got to do a better job of finishing drives and have to eliminate the turnovers and keep our defense out of bad situations.”

On his interceptions
“Every interception has its own story, [and] nobody really wants to hear it at the end of the day. A quarterback signs the check on every ball that he throws. There’s an old saying that the most important part of every play is to possess the ball at the end of that play. That’s the quarterback’s job. I have to do a better job of that. Two interceptions tonight—two in the red zone two weeks in a row … just can’t have it. Tipped balls … whatever it is … just can’t have it. I’ve got to find a way to protect the ball better and ensure we get some kind of points when we’re down there in the red zone.”

On the Broncos’ offense
“I thought the pass protection was excellent tonight. Twenty-three attempts in the first half is a lot of passes, against a good defensive front for Seattle. I thought the guys up front really battled hard, and the receivers made some good plays with the ball and some good runs after the catch—ran some good routes. So, there are some things we can build on but, obviously, some things we can improve on.

“I thought our execution of it, and our communication in that was pretty good. We just have to just finish the little things—finish plays and finish drives. It’s something you have to do.”

WR Eric Decker

On what he takes away from this game
“I think in the first half we had too many turnovers. I thought we moved the ball well. The defense kept us in the game. It was 10-9 at half. Credit to them, we could have had a touchdown at the end of the game—a couple dropped passes from us, myself, like I said, turnovers again. Stuff to learn from. That’s what preseason Is all about. You can take the good and the bad, you learn from it and just try to get better and try to get it out of your system before the season starts.”

On the importance of the preseason
“That’s the beauty of preseason. It’s a test trial for the season, I think. We’ve got a lot of stuff to work on. It’s a good time to work off those kinks. I think with how the game ended today, we found out a lot of stuff we do need to work on, some weaknesses, there are some strengths there too. You’ve got to build off those. I think overall, unfortunately, we don’t like the outcome of the score but you can always take from this experience and learn from it.”

On how comfortable he was in the no-huddle
“Very comfortable. I think that’s something that we’re trying to expand and use to our advantage- just to be able to get to the line, call a play and play fast. We want to get up and play fast, that’s our goal. We’ve got to establish ourselves in the running game and just do everything fast.”

RB Willis McGahee

On how he performed
“I might’ve had a little mishap on the first series, on the third-and-one, but other than that, I was pleased with it, but I’ve still got to do better.”

On if a game like this could help the team
“It’s football, you’re not going to have a perfect game. We didn’t have a great game this game. You’ve got to give it up to Seattle, they played good. They make money just like we make money. They’re going to come out there and play harder. They won their battle. We’ve got a lot of things we need to work on, offense and defense.”

S David Bruton

On the two punts he blocked
“It felt great. Just to put on the film that I’m a threat. Putting in the film study to know the opponent and his weakness and exploit it to my advantage.”

On what he saw on the plays when he came up with punt blocks
“The first one, I actually went up and under, stuck him and got him underneath and just put the long arm out there. The second one I wasn’t even supposed to rush. But I just bull rushed him and got to the punt. Stuck the arm out for that one too.”

DL Derek Wolfe

On his confidence
“As far as confidence, it’s just another obstacle. You have to build confidence and that comes with experience. So this is only my second game. I think I played like 40 snaps tonight. It was just good to get there. I had a long drive where I got a little gassed. It just shows that it’s not college. I got welcomed to the NFL today.”

On how pleased he is that the first defense still hasn’t given up a touchdown
“But still, we still let them run on us. They ran the ball. We have to win on second down. That’s what it comes down to. I blame myself for some of that because I was in the wrong place at the wrong time sometimes. Just get better every day, that’s what we have to do. We have to come back next week and get better.”

On the defense’s continuity
“I think we’re jelling really well. Our communication is good and everything. They’re helping me out because I’m new. We have a really tight-knit group here. We’re going to grind together and get better.”

Watch Cat, the man of your dreams will be a BRONCOS FAN!! LOL

  2. tlcat06 says:

Before I go can I just say how I LOVE that PFM can make another team take timeouts because he’s running his hurry up offense? By the 4th quarter those defenses are going to be ridiculously tired!

  3. tlcat06 says:

    He better be!! LOL

  4. strandoftds82 says:

    Have a good night.

  5. OrangeTsunami says:

Cat – I knew you were being sarcastic, no worries. Btw, I hope you were just joking about people cheering for Tebow in the stands, because that’s plain old crazy, and it’s an absolute embarrassment to all Broncos fans around the world…..

  6. oldsouthstander says:

Any injuries we need to worry about?
Reply doesn’t come on until 11PM EST so I’ll probably watch it Monday morning. Looking forward to the 2 bloc ked punts!

  7. tlcat06 says:

Um… No. There were three of four men screaming it. MEN. I had to control myself so I didn’t turn around and punch them, OT. No joke! LOL

OSS David Bruton solidified his job last night… Amazing. Both he and Chris Harris.

  8. sndvl says:

Since I didn’t see the game I won’t comment about it. After watching the replay, I’ll offer up my opinion.

The concert last night was fantastic. That’s my kind of party! Definitely a top 5 for me. I haven’t had that great of time since the playoff game.

  9. millertime2 says:

Peyton manning had a very goodnight at QB, he moved the ball with no problem, we were winning at half 10-9. He had 2 pics one was a lucky tip ball. He went 17-23 171 yds , if he played the whole game he gets 350 plus yds in the air, what else do you want for his 2nd game. Remember peyton has never had a winning record in pre-season, hes maybe won a game or two, way to early to panic, it , was a joy watching him. Even NFL.NETWORK is saying how well he played. You guys need to go to a real game, when he plays the whole game.

  10. millertime2 says:

Did you guys see Tebow miss that wide open reciever in the end zone, then he tried to blame it on the reciever lmao

  11. Bronco_Turtle says:

What concert did you see Sndvl?

and OT… I don’t see how preseason concern compares to Tebow suppport during the regular season, especially when he was bringing W’s… I don’t understand how you relate these things

Our team did not play good… we don’t have good depth of talent in many positions and we will have to play absolutely mistake free football to win games this season.

  12. millertime2 says:

I just glad the circus moved to New York BT, it was our D that kept us in those games last yr sorry

  13. Bronco_Turtle says:

sorry for what? not understanding what you see miller? it’s cool man, just like everyone else, you got your own oppinion! I’m not trying to change anyone’s mind… just expressing my point of view

  14. millertime2 says:

  18. Bronco_Turtle says:

Nice, Congrats man! My grandfather on my mothers side was a truck driver, and so is my Uncle. I really enjoyed riding along when I was little!

  19. sndvl says:

Hey Turtle! Didn’t know you were going to the game? You have season tickets?

I went to the Luke Bryan & Jason Aldean show. It was phenomenal. It was also a 1st date for me. Haha. I’m confident there will be another one too!
Like I said though, it was such a great show and as great a time I had since that playoff game!

  20. millertime2 says:

Miller – were you able to set up your landscaping to pay you as passive income? Great to hear you got a good job. I have two brothers who are truck drivers.

Ho hum – sure hoping the Broncos can make a season of it!

  23. millertime2 says:

I just sold the bus, 3500, Just concentrating on driving now

  24. sndvl says:

Good evening Daddy! Hope all is well with you & the family!

Just saw that the replay won’t be on until 10pm my time (CST). So. DVR is set. Even though I’m off work tomorrow. Last night was a late night for me & I certainly enjoy my sleep. Does this mean I’m getting old? Lol

  25. millertime2 says:

SNDVL=OLD LMAO join the club brother.

  26. tlcat06 says:

This is freaking me out. A little bit or kind of a lot. But it’s nuts what happened in this Colts game:

    Manning: 16/23, 177 yds, 1 tipped INT, 1 INT

    Luck: 16/25, 175 yds, 1 tipped INT, 1 INT, 1 rushing TD

    Spooooky!

And DB, it’s a preseason game. I don’t see you worried about the Jets, why would you worry about the Broncos?

  27. Bronco_Turtle says:

Hiya DB… sorry I missed you! I cooked dinner and fell asleep on the couch!!!

Miller, Aldean sings Country and is very good… I’m not familiar with Luke Bryan…

sndvl, I don’t have Season tickets of my own, but a guy I’ve been taking Elk hunting the last few years has given me access to tickets to whatever games I would like to go to. I’m going to go to as many as I can this year, esp the Steelers, Raiders, Chiefs and Chargers! If things work out I’m going to go to Maryland and watch the Ravens game, as I really want to see Ray Lewis and Ed Reed play… I was hoping to see someone flatten Suggs after what he said about Tebow, but then he blew his achilles so he probably won’t be on the field for our game…

  28. DaddyBronc says:

I never worry about the Jets – just Tebow. Wore my Bronco Blue Tebow jersey to church this morning. Our Sunday School teacher was in his “niners” polo. Haha

  29. DaddyBronc says:

Hype-pathetically speaking….supposing by the 5th regular season game the Broncos are….let’s say for an arbitrary example…let’s say they are 1 – 4.

Is it possible to bench the 100 million dollar man?

I wonder if the FO would publicly say, “sorry Tebow”. LOL NOT~!

It is a real question though. Playing QB in the NFL is a really tough thing to do. Not only does the man have to be in great physical shape. He also has to have his head thinking right as well. In the situation where a QB might be suffering to a greater degree as he has had to work extra hard to get himself into game shape. He battles through injury and an aging body, combined now with a bit of pre-season adversity. It doesn’t take much of a stretch to imagine afore mentioned QB might be struggling a bit with some self doubt. It also doesn’t take much to imagine that this QB might not be able to hone in on that special touch after being away from the game for more than a year, and away from the necessary continued refining of NFL QB instincts. Do we know of any QB’s who have returned to top form after being out for a year? Especially at 36 years of age?

    Just axing!!!

  30. killerkod says:

    Good Morning Broncos Country!!

Not gonna say much more about the game that I already said yesterday morning. The first teams had their ups and downs but for me………..and call me an optimist…………..the ups outweighed the downs. Saw some great things that with a little more time, will be awesome things.

DB, I think we’re committed to PM for the entire season, barring injury………..and whatever our record is, will be. Regardless if we win or not, we’re still better off without TT, IMO.

And enough with this referee lockout Goodell. Get a deal done and get the real refs back in the game. Can’t you see how inept they’re making your league look? It’s like amatuer hour out there. We can’t go into the regular season with this kind of officiating.

    GO BRONCOS!

  31. killerkod says:

I bet JDR runs tackling drills today…………..over……….and over………..and over………..lol. There were so many missed tackles, specially by the 2′s and 3′s.

  32. OrangeTsunami says:

Morning kod. Poor tackling for sure. Weird, because it was off the charts against the Bears.. Time for some tough love, no doubt…..

BT – I wasn’t tying to make a connection between the two, just pointing out that you didn’t seem to be so hypercritical of the team until AT (after Tebow). Carry on, just an observation.

  33. killerkod says:

morning OT! I can see both you and LBF going at it all season long with BT! hahahaha

Yup, I think this will be a tough week of practice……….the coaches are gonna ride them hard. They need to as that effort over the weekend just won’t cut it. TOUGH LOVE!

  34. killerkod says:

You think the ref situation will be ironed out for opening day? I sure hope so man!

  35. OrangeTsunami says:

Poor choice of words there… Hypercritical, not to be confused with hypocritical, although they both may be appropriate… :D

  36. OrangeTsunami says:

I really hope so too bro.. I originally said it wasn’t a big deal to have replacement refs, given everyone is at the same advantage/disadvantage, but I stand corrected… They are just awful, and it takes away from the game.

  37. killerkod says:

and like a player pointed out………….the preseason isn’t even played at “full speed”. Once the real season starts and the game gets faster, they will struggle even more. The league makes far too much money to let this even be an issue. Losing the integrity of the game is far more costly than paying the refs what they’re due. At least these replacements are making a string case for the vets…………

  38. OrangeTsunami says:

DB – I find your views to be VERY biased.. I don’t think anyone would disagree with the fact that football is a team sport. When the Broncos went to the playoffs last year, beating the Steelers, you placed all the praise on your hero. Now that we have a new QB, you will hold him up to last seasons successes (as a team), and blame him fully if we don’t reach the same level of success. Meanwhile, while your hero struggles mightily with his new team, it’s not his fault he can’t score a TD against the 3′s and 4′s, because in your view it’s just a function the OL, etc, etc… Perhaps the “hypocritical” comment should have been reserved you sir….

  39. OrangeTsunami says:

The refs are so bad that part of me thinks that the officials union is paying them to be so bad, in order to help their negotiations…. Lol

  40. killerkod says:

There’s no excuse…………they’ve had since June to get this thing worked out and now it’s blowing up in Goodell’s face……….not that I mind seeing him look stupid, but when it affects the games I watch, I draw the line!

  41. killerkod says:

My fave was…………..after the Walton penalty, the play was under review………..and then he says,” the ruling on the field stands.” LMAO

  42. OrangeTsunami says:

Lmfao! Our 1st team pass rush was held the whole time as well..

  43. killerkod says:

Yeah, I saw 2 or 3 sure-fire holds on von that went uncalled…………..

  44. OrangeTsunami says:

Looks like Jake Locker has been named the starter in TN. I’m interested to see how he pans out. I remember Elway saying Locker was the QB the most resembled him in that draft class, when asked at the time.

  45. tlcat06 says:

Kod, OT good morning! We saw holding on Von from all the way up in the nosebleed section. I was so mad!!!!

  46. killerkod says:

Morning cat!!!! Mr. Magoo couldn’t have missed those holds! lol

  47. tlcat06 says:

Smh @ DB. You really are incredible. Well he did kind of say he felt like a rookie but wasn’t going to be able to play like one. He didn’t play like a rookie and if we go 0-16 he will be our QB barring an injury. But that’s not going to happen. Because you don’t know Peyton Manning you don’t know that none of this really matters, hes never won a ton of preseason games and hes in perfectly fine shape. Its still funny to me how you’ll rag on him if he gets on his receivers but you’re perfectly fine with TT doing whatever he wants to do because he cant ever do anything wrong… oh except he doesn’t know how to play the position of QB. You’ll give him every excuse in he book. Well I’m going to give Peyton every excuse in the book so keep it up buddy. I’m armed with a comeback for every ridiculous thing you blame Peyton for being that he isn’t.

  48. tlcat06 says:

OT… I think Jake Locker is a wonderful choice and I hope he can help Tennessee be successful!

  49. OrangeTsunami says:

Morning cat. I got sports radio on, and it’s non stop bashing of the Jets! :D
