Broncos vs. Seahawks: First Half Blog

September 19th, 2010 - 1:57pm by Eric Detweiler

PREGAME FESTIVITIES: The Broncos defense is being introduced seconds after a mass of orange balloons was let loose into the Mile High air. The 2010 regular season at INVESCO Field at Mile High begins in just a few minutes.

COIN TOSS: After honoring local military personnel and a moment of silence for fallen veterans, the Broncos captains — Champ Bailey, Daniel Graham and Brian Dawkins — stepped to midfield along with honorary captain John Elway. The Seahawks called “tails” and were correct. They will receive the opening kickoff and defend the north end zone.

Q1 15:00: Matt Prater kicked deep to Seattle’s Leon Washington, who downs the kick in the end zone for a touchback. The Broncos will start the season on defense.

Q1 14:59 : The Broncos defense has taken the field with Jamal Williams, Justin Bannan and Ryan McBean lined up along the defensive line. The linebackers are Robert Ayers, Mario Haggan, D.J. Williams and Jason Hunter with Champ Bailey, Renaldo Hill, Brian Dawkins and Andre’ Goodman in the secondary. The first play from scrimmage was a Matt Hasselback incompletion. On second down, Justin Forsett took a handoff for three yards. Before the third down play, the Seahawks took a timeout. The ensuing pass was complete to Deon Butler for 12 yards and a first down.

Q1 13:49: The Seahawks had a new set of downs from their own 35. After an incompletion, Justin Forsett took a handoff three yards, setting up another 3rd-and-seven. The third down play turned into another conversion to Butler. This one went to the Broncos 42 yard-line. On first down, Forsett blasted ahead for 14 yards before being brought down by Jason Hunter. On first down from the Broncos 28-yard line, Forsett pushed ahead for four yards. On the next play, Hasselbeck hit John Carlson for 8 yards and first down before Brian Dawkins brought him down.

Q1 10:59 : On first down from the Broncos 16-yard line, Julius Jones was stopped by Hunter for no gaini. On second down, Hasselbeck avoided the Broncos rush and threw toward Butler, who tapped his toes on the sideline for a 4-yard reception. On third-and-6 from the Broncos 12, Hasselbeck hit Butler over the middle for another first down. Renaldo Hill smacked the receiver down at the Broncos 1-yard line.

Q1 9:09: After a false start on Seattle’s Stacy Andrews, Forsett apppeared to score on a short run, but holding was called on Seattle’s Sean Locklear. That moved the ball back to the Broncos 16-yard line. On the next play, Hasselbeck couldn’t hook up with Mike Williams. On second down, Hasselbeck tried to fit a pass into Carlson, but Champ Bailey leaped and intercepted it at his own 4-yard line. The Broncos will start on offense from there.

Q1 8:43: Broncos offensive starters have taken the field behind quarterback Kyle Orton. The offensive line includes left tackle Ryan Clady, left guard Stanley Daniels, center J.D. Walton, right guard Russ Hochstein and right tackle Zane Beadles. Knowshon Moreno and Spencer Larsen are in the backfield with Jabar Gaffney and Brandon Lloyd lined up at wide receiver and Daniel Graham at tight end. On first down, Moreno ran right but couldn’t find any room, losing a yard on the play. The running back got the call again on second down, picking up 8 yards and setting up 3rd-and-4. Orton hit Jabar Gaffney for a 9-yard gain and a Broncos first down.

Q1 6:33: On first down, Orton hit Moreno for a 13-yard gain and another first down. On the ensuing play, Correll Buckhalter got the handoff and picked up 3 yards. On second down, Orton faked the handoff and tried to find Gaffney back across the field but could not connect. That set up 3rd-and-7 from their own 35. Orton looked for Gaffney again, but the high pass slipped through his finger tips. That brought on Britton Colquitt and the punt team. The 58-yard punt was muffed and Cassius Vaughn came away with the loose ball. The Broncos offense will come back on the field with a first down at Seattle’s 13-yard line.

Q1 4:43: On first down, Orton hit Moreno for a 5-yard gain. Before the next play, the Broncos were flagged for delay of game, moving the ball back to the Seattle 13-yard line. Orton tried a backshoulder pass for Lloyd on the next play, but the pass bounced away incomplete. On third down, Orton hit Eddie Royal over the middle. The receiver caught the pass at the 1-yard line and rolled over the goal line for his first touchdown of the season. Prater hit the extra point to put the Broncos ahead, 7-0.

BRONCOS 7, SEAHAWKS 0

Q1 3:48: After the quick three-play scoring drive, Prater kicked off to Washington. This one was even deeper than the last one, bouncing through the end zone for another touchback. The Seahawks will start from their own 20-yard line.

Q1 3:47: Hasselbeck couldn’t connect with Carlson on first down. On second down, Hasselbeck tossed a 6-yard pass to Carlson before being dropped by Ayers and Nate Jones. On third-and-5, Hasselbeck slotted a pass to Deion Branch for a first down to continue the drive. On the first play of the next set of downs, Julius Jones ran for 6 more yards. A false start on Stacy Andrews then cost the Seahawks 5 yards.

Q1 3:05: On 2nd-and-9, Jones slammed ahead for 3 yards before being stopped by Marcus Thomas. On third down, Hasselbeck took a shotgun snap and tried to break up the middle before being wrapped up D.J. Williams and Jarvis Moss for a 3-yard loss. The Broncos declined an illegal shift penalty and Seattle had to punt. Perrish Cox took the 51-yard Jon Ryan punt before being knocked out of bounds at his own 19-yard line. That’s where the Broncos offense will take over.

Q1 0:11: Orton hit Knowshon Moreno for a 4-yard gain on the first play of the drive, bringing an end to the first quarter. That’s Moreno’s team-leading third catch of the game.

Q2 15:00: The Broncos begin the second quarter facing a 2nd-and-6 from their own 23-yard line. Orton fired a deep pass to Brandon Lloyd that the veteran receiver pulled in for a 25-yard gain. On the ensuing play, Moreno burst off the right side for a 9-yard gain. Buckhalter got the call on the next play, and he picked up 2 yards and a first down. Moreno was back in and took the next carry, gaining four more yards. He then took another carry for 2 yards. That brought up a 3rd-and-4 from the 35. The Broncos then executed a pretty little trick play. Orton pitched to Moreno, who threw back across the field to Orton. Orton found Eddie Royal streaking across the field in stride. Royal crashed down at the Seahawks 1-yard line with a 34-yard gain. Royal lost control of the ball at the end of the play and it rolled out of the end zone. Seattle has challenged, hoping that the officials will reconsider and rule it a touchback.

Q2 11:10: The ruling on the field stands. The Broncos have the ball first-and-goal at the Seattle 1-yard line.

Q2 11:09: On first down, Moreno crashed into the line but could not move the pile. He was stopped for no gain. On the ensuing play, Orton rolled out and couldn’t connect with Graham in the back of the end zone. On third down, Buckhalter blasted through the line and into the end zone for the 1-yard touchdown run — his first of the 2010 season. Prater tacks on the extra point and the Broncos have an early two-touchdown lead.

BRONCOS 14, SEAHAWKS 0

Q2 10:30: That was a 10-play, 81-yard touchdown drive for the Broncos. Matt Prater kicks off for the third time and records his third touchback. Seattle will start from their own 20-yard line again.

Q2 10:29: Seattle’s Justin Forsett couldn’t find any running room on first down, losing a yard as Dawkins and Haggan dropped him. Hasselbeck hit John Carlson for an 8-yard gain. On third down, Forsett broke into the secondary, picking up 19-yards before Hill dragged him down. Hasselbeck hit Michael Robinson for a 7-yard gain on first down. Then they went back to the ground game as Leon Washington got his first carry of the game. He picked up about three yards, bringing up a measurement.

Q2 7:58: The Seahawks did not get the first down, bringing up 3rd-and-inches. Hasselbeck looked deep down field on the play, but could not connect with Butler. On 4th-and-inches, they’ll go for it. They try a quarterback sneak and Hasselbeck picks up two yards and the first down.

Q2 6:52: Michael Robinson picks up 15 yards on a first down run before Brian Dawkins and Renaldo Hill brought him down. On the next play, Hasselbeck looked for Carlson near the goal line, but Dawkins swooped in and picked off the pass. That’s the Broncos second pick of the day. They’ll take over at their own 7-yard line.

Q2 6:18: As the Broncos begin another offensive drive, Demaryius Thomas has entered the game at wide receiver. This is the first round pick’s NFL regular season debut. On first down, Moreno tries the left side on a handoff, picking up 5 yards. The second-year running back gets the call on the next play, picking up 4 more yards. On 3rd-and-1, Buckhalter picks up a yard and the first down.

Q2 4:41: With a new set of downs, the Broncos kept it on the ground. Moreno was stopped by Lofa Tatupu for no gain. A screen pass to Daniel Graham is also snuffed out as they lose four yards. That sets up 3rd-and-14. Orton finds Demaryius Thomas for his first NFL catch. Thomas breaks up the right side after catching a short pass for 18 yards and a first down. Orton looks for Thomas again on the next play. Thomas grabs a 20-yard reception. Tack on 15 more yards because of an unnecessary roughness penalty and the Broncos are all the way to the Seattle 34-yard line.

Q2 2:15: On the next play, Moreno picked up 7 yards on a rush. The running back fumbled but the ball bounced out of bounds. That brings us to the 2-minute warning of the first half with the Broncos facing a 2nd-and-3 from the Seattle 27-yard line.

Q2 1:58: Orton tried to hit Buckhalter on second down but the pass fell incomplete. On third down, Orton took a shot gun snap and zipped a pass over the middle to Thomas. Thomas picked up 9 yards and the first down. Orton continues to look for Thomas, hitting the rookie on a quick pass for his fourth catch of the drive. The play picked up 9 more yards. The Broncos are inside the Seattle 10-yard line now.

Q2 0:30: On the next play, Moreno picked up 2 more yards and a first down. The Broncos took a timeout with a first-and-goal from the Seattle 7-yard line coming up. That’s their first charged timeout.

Q2 0:29: A quick pass from Orton to Royal moves the Broncos down to the Seattle 3-yard line. The Broncos use another time out.

Q2 0:24: Moreno takes a handoff and tries the right side. Seattle’s Earl Thomas wrestles him to the ground at the 2-yard line. The Broncos use their last timeout. On third down, Buckhalter couldn’t haul in the Orton pass at the goal line. That brings on Matt Prater to try a 20-yard field goal. He splits the uprights to put the home team up by three scores.

BRONCOS 17, SEAHAWKS 0

Q2 0:14: Prater squibs the kickoff to Washington. The Seattle returner brings the ball back to his own 18-yard line before being dropped by Joe Mays. On the next play, Hasselbeck takes a knee, ending the first half.
