Broncos vs. Saints: Key Plays

October 29th, 2012 - 12:08am by Stuart Zaas

Third-and-3 from the New Orleans 27: Linebacker Danny Trevathan set the tone early for the Broncos defense, diving in front of a pass from Drew Brees intended for tight end Jimmy Graham to knock the ball away.

Third-and-6 from the New Orleans 27: With the Broncos driving in Saints territory, quarterback Peyton Manning found tight end Jacob Tamme for a 6-yard completion to extend the drive. Knowing where the first-down mark was, Tamme, dove forward to pick up the extra yard to move the chains.

Fourth-and-2 from the Denver 47: After calling a timeout, the Saints elected to go for it on fourth down near midfield. Linebacker Wesley Woodyard leaped in the air to intercept Brees’ pass and give the ball back to the Broncos. Denver took the lead and never looked back on the ensuing possession.

Third-and-1 from the Denver 16: Coming out of the locker room after halftime, the Broncos were looking to extend their lead. A stop would have held the team to a three-and-out and given the Saints momentum, but instead running back Willis McGahee plowed forward for a 3-yard gain and kept the drive going. Eight plays later, Manning hit Demaryius Thomas for a 1-yard touchdown to give the Broncos a 24-7 lead.

Morning Gang! Hope everyone is well………how could you all not be after witnessing that complete game last night.

We had it going in all phases of the game……….and it was a thing of beauty.

Our D really showed up….and although the pass rush didn’t show up on the stat sheet, their constant pressure forced Brees to get the ball out quicker than he would’ve liked…….and that had a major impact on the game. Woodyard is a BEAST! Love how he’s playing….and if Champ thinks he can get even better, he will.

And how about that O. They’re really starting to find that rhythm and the balance of pass and run is impressive. It was great to see Green get in the mix and show how he can rumble.

The rest of the AFC had better take notice that our engines are starting to rev up and we’re going to be right there when it’s all said and done. With the remaining schedule, there’s no reason we can’t go on a serious run. But in the wise words of Champ…….of which I’m sure he’ll be preaching this week…..you can only look as far as the next opponent.

Oh, and it was a beautiful thing watching Rivers and the Chargers stink it up in Cleveland! Of course it was due to the “weather conditions.” LOL Oh Phil!

    GO BRONCOS!

I thought we had a great balance on offense. MaGahee had over 100 yds and Hillman almost did too. If he would’ve gotten some more carries he may have broke 100 yds. The ground game looked like Shanny’s style of zone blocking with the cutback. I think Hillman will be a very nice change of pace back for us. Manning looked like the Manning that used to shred our defense. I don’t want to take anything away from the Broncos win because we played well, but the Saints just have no wind in their sails without Payton. They just look like a team that is treading water just to keep their heads above the surface but are declining. Great win, plus the Chargers loss to the Browns. Makes me super happy!

Still have to eliminate the turnovers. Hillman needs to learn to hold onto the ball as well. It got punched out from behind but went out of bounds. He’s young, but he needs to learn that teams will try and do that all the time. I don’t think we’ve had a turnover free game this season have we? Maybe the Steelers game? Anyway just need to eliminate them.

Defense played well. Not a lot of pressure on Brees but we effectively defended the pass and run. What can you say about our young CBs. They’ve really stepped it up and played well. Surprised that we didn’t get a pass rush on Brees too much, but I actually thought our front 4 were getting some penetration for once. Just enough to force Brees to throw it a bit early at times.

All in all a great win, top the division, lets keep it going!!!

That was probably the most comfortable win I have had the pleasure to watch since the glory days of the Shanny/Elway era in 1998. With one exception that got my blood boiling early in the game, Doom messing up the easy fumble recovery that basically rolled into his arms while on the ground.

Other than that stink everything came out pretty much smelling like roses.

Many contributors on both side of the ball are very young meaning they will be able to do so for years.

    Virgil is no longer Green.

Elway’s free agents are pretty much all contributing at a high level.

For future reference, some guys here shouldn’t give up so quickly on a player for a fumble and asking him to go on a holiday.

Woodyard is doing so great on passing plays I hope we NEVER see DJ for any of those, or get rid of him all together would work fine for me too.

Hillman breaking through big time, who can say with me “Moreno here is the door”.

Mays may be a hard worker but his limited talent has rightly relegated him to ST duty.

So much good stuff happening on the field and the right decisions being made about personnel use it has to all go back to the top, John Elway, you man are doing a fantastic job in your new position, absolutely as good as anyone could of expected.

There is absolutely now zero doubt barring injuries that my 10-6 prediction will be ridiculed.

In fact Shannon Sharpe saying we will run the table and end up 13-3 fighting Houston for the home field advantage throughout is not exactly a pipe dream anymore, WE ARE THAT GOOD.

Just look at teacher Manning working the sidelines with the O line after every drive, I mean that kind of dedication is contagious. The Anti-Orton I call that, LOL.

And kudos to the fan in the stands who held the pic of Tebow with the inscription “Hi, just taking notes”, PRICELESS!

Anyhow this was just one game and against a terrible opponent in this horrific year for the Saints organisation so while I’ll take this resounding win with a grain of salt no one will make me overlook the fact that until yesterday Drew Brees had averaged 29 points per game this year and he had 7 yesterday until garbage time when he added 7 more. I know of no one in the league outside of a few crazy bias Bronco fan who would of predicted anything like that. Thank you Del Rio!

We are on our way, the future is bright and the present is for the taking, GO BRONCOS!

  6. brian_schneider says:

So if our defense continues to play lights out the rest of the season, will we be looking for a new DC next season in our carousel of DC because Del Rio will be getting HC calls just like Dennis Allen?

  7. OrangeTsunami says:

Great win, but we must not get too ahead of ourselves. Calling for players to be cut or banished after one game of solid play is short sighted. The whole point of a 53 man roster, plus a practice squad, is because the NFL season is long and there are a lot of injuries. The best players will play, and we will have several to choose from.

Not too long ago, I remember people saying how Decker and Demaryius were both overrated…. LOL

  8. baylinorcrush says:

You better anchor down Tsunami or evacuate depending on your situation where it is that you live, with a name like yours I would hope you know better than to take this storm lightly, good luck once again, may folks in your neck of the woods are going to seriously need it believe me, been there done that way too many times in Pensacola, horrible stuff I don’t wish even on my worse enemies.

  9. CARAMELLOO says:

I love it when we kick the ball off to start the game!! We were up at half with the chance to add more points to start the 3rd quarter and we did just that! That’s key when you play a team with the Saints offense. On another note……. Saints fans are soooooo BITTER and many are my family members. Everyone was on my Facebook page Who Dat Who Dat and all that foolishness, but after the game……… SILENCE!! Guess I added to what the Broncos did by going on their page and saying…… Buck Dat!!

  10. OrangeTsunami says:

Anyone see when Wolfe striped the ball from Brees with one arm, while fully engaging his blocker with the other arm? I can’t wait to watch this kid develop before our eyes, sky’s the limit with him.

And the worst hurricanes for some reason always occur at night, like this one will, a nightmare, so glad I’m out of harms way for this one, I’ve gone without power for 11 days after a category 3 (Ivan), in over 100 degree temps, never again, that’s why I’m in Austin now.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Irene was a baby, just so you know.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

TRB, if you are checking in, good luck to you too, in Baltimore, very much in harms way too, thinking about you.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

HURRICANES, I hate these things, used to live under the threat of them well over a dozen times, boarding up the doors and windows, filling up the gas cans, having the generator and the chainsaw ready, anchoring down for up to 12 hours, then finally opening up the door after a night of terror spent wondering if the house was going to crumble, seeing our 6 foot privacy fence completely torn down, some of the 4×4 posts snapped off at the base like broken matchsticks, roof tiles mostly gone, plastic siding peeled off, thousands of various homes debris in your yard, then the generators starting, every single house in a subdivision, deafening noise going on for days, and when the gas is gone just a couple gas station reopen, waiting 4 hours in line to refill, etc etc, a scenario that I swore I would never ever lived through again. Sorry for what seems like a ranting but is an actual account of what it feels like and is like and I’m trying to tell the guys here who live there to take it seriously and PREPARE NOW, this is no joking matter and your Broncos can wait, you need to get ready for that monster even though it’s nothing like the Ivan I lived through, afterward the common theme is “I never thought it would be that bad”, just didn’t want to be the one who didn’t tell you, take care in the NorthEast.

  15. RH709 says:

Bay, I get the feeling you really dislike hurricanes. I must have esp or something.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

You’ll see why, just follow the news all week….

  17. TicoBroncoFan says:

I’ll come clean and admit I was worried about this game. It had let down potential with a shoot out written all over it. But I felt it was over on our second TD because our D showed up BIG time. Champ on Colston … GENIUS… Trevathan (despite the whiff on Sproles) on Graham was GENIUS… and many more very smart D plan details that made it a one sided, old fashioned whoopin…

I share bay’s assessment on 10-6 probably coming up short. There is a ton of talent and a “feeling” of TEAM that has been rarely seen in recent years.

That was a FUN win, a great game and the start of a great run…

    GO BRONCOS!

  18. raidrhadr says:

Bay. I lived in Virginia Beach for 13 years. Jax FL for 5. Been there…done that with the hurricanes. I must say that cooking breakfast on my grill had an interesting appeal to it. It was kinda like camping. No power. No cell signal. Debris and water everywhere. Best of all people came together (for the most part) to help a neighbor.

I went through about a dozen hurricanes…literally. Most of them on a U.S. Navy vessel. Just 3 or 4 on land.

  19. raidrhadr says:

Just saw that Mays is out for the year.

  20. louisianabroncofan says:

hey bay good to see you on more round here. i guess the undesirables that clamored on here for awhile are all but gone now and you can enjoy posting and chatting again. cool. and i agree hurricanes are a bad, bad thing. i’ve been through a few but they werent so horrible. my family went through katrina in new orleans and i was there right before and after and thats some kind of devastation i’d rather never see again. nothing good about these hurricanes and i, too, hope tsunami takes care up there. the worst part will be for the people who dont take it seriously and dont prepare much at all. the reality could be devastating for them if its a bad storm. my sister lives in new jersey by the shore close to atlantic city and i’m worried sick about it. she wants to ride it out no matter what i say. being without power for that long will really make you appreciate when you do have it thats for sure.
on a lighter note as carmello said here in louisiana everyone is saints crazy these days so i had to hear about it all week last week from everyone and all weekend from the family about how the saints were gonna beat the broncos and brees, brees, brees. well guess what i’ve been doing today?
