Broncos vs. Ravens: Key Plays

January 12th, 2013 - 10:21pm by Stuart Zaas

Third-and-2 from the Baltimore 38, 12:32 to play in first quarter: The Broncos defense stuffed Ravens running back Ray Rice on a third-down carry, forcing Baltimore to punt on the first possession of the game. Returner Trindon Holliday capitalized on the opportunity, returning the 52-yard punt 90 yards for a touchdown to mark the longest postseason punt return in NFL history.

Third-and-8 from the Baltimore 8, 11:26 to play in first quarter: Facing a third down deep in his own territory, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco lofted a pass down the right sideline for receiver Tandon Doss. Cornerback Tony Carter was there in tight coverage, but it was deemed to be a little too tight and drew a pass interference flag. Two plays later, Flacco connected on a 59-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Torrey Smith to tie the game at 7-7.

Third-and-7 from the Denver 29, 8:24 to play in first quarter: Needing a first down to avoid a three-and-out on the Broncos’ first drive after the Ravens took a 14-7 lead on a pick-six, quarterback Peyton Manning connected with tight end Jacob Tamme for a 21-yard pickup. The drive ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Manning to Stokley that knotted the score at 14-14.

Fourth-and-8 from the Baltimore 34, 1:21 to play in second quarter: After Manning’s third-down pass fell incomplete, kicker Matt Prater came on to attempt a 52-yard field goal. His kick was no good, turning the ball back to the Ravens at their 42-yard line. Baltimore needed just three plays and 40 seconds to turn that field position into points as Flacco hit Smith for a 32-yard touchdown that tied the score 21-21 heading into halftime.

Third-and-10 from the Denver 37, 2:55 to play in third quarter: Baltimore’s pass rush got to Manning as he dropped back on third down, strip-sacking the quarterback and recovering the loose ball. The Ravens converted that turnover into points with a 1-yard Ray Rice rushing touchdown that capped a five-play, 37-yard drive.

Third-and-3 from the Baltimore 33, 8:46 to play in fourth quarter: Manning’s third-down pass to Demaryius Thomas fell incomplete, but also falling to the ground was a yellow flag that signified defensive holding. The penalty extended the Broncos’ drive and three plays later Denver took a 35-28 lead on a 17-yard touchdown pass to Thomas.

Fourth-and-5 from the Denver 31, 3:16 to play in fourth quarter: With time winding down and the Broncos ahead by a touchdown, Baltimore had reached Denver territory but needed a fourth down conversion to keep their drive going. Safety Mike Adams, who was playing in his first career postseason contest, broke up Flacco’s pass intended for tight end Dennis Pitta, giving the ball back to the Broncos offense.

Third-and-7 from the Denver 47, 2:00 to play in fourth quarter: With Baltimore out of timeouts, a Broncos first down could have sealed the game. However, the Ravens defense came up with the stop, giving its offense one last chance. With time winding down, Flacco hit wideout Jacoby Jones on a 70-yard touchdown heave that sent the game into overtime.

Second-and-6 from the Denver 38, 1:01 to play in the first overtime: Looking for Stokley over the middle, Manning’s pass instead was intercepted by cornerback Corey Graham. That set up kicker Justin Tucker’s 47-yard game-winning field goal that send the Ravens on to the AFC Championship game.

Bay, at 2:00 minute warning in the 4th quarter and Baltimore has no times outs left. Would you have tried to throw for a 1st down and taken the chance to end it with a kneel down if we converted. I’m a gambling man! I was hoping for that!

This playoff failure starts at the top, and Manning is not that, the failure rests above him or any other player in my opinion. The coaching staff did not have the team ready to play and the chosen schemes gave them very little chance to succeed. It was painfully obvious to me anyway.

is anyone watching the falcons smash the seahawks.

  4. baylinorcrush says:

Back then I was hoping for the defensive coordinator of the Saints, Gregg Williams, the ostracized dude, LOL.

I’m not getting enough money to call the plays strand, haha.

  5. strandoftds82 says:

There are times when you half to go in for the kill and it it right then and there. At 3rd and 7 with no time outs by the opposition, if you convert, we’re celebrating and no overtime needed. Thats a dagger to the heart to not go for it in my book. IMO

  6. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, so far this weekend I picked all 3 games wrong if Atlanta does win, wow, what a league…

  7. strandoftds82 says:

    LOL!

  8. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, got you, but all water under the bridge now and in Fox’s water there is no such aggressive play calling attitude whatsoever, at least in critical times, it’s rather always close to the vest, hence my feeling we have deep rooted issues at the top, wish it was simpler, like a couple pieces here and there, but alas it’s just not the case.

  9. strandoftds82 says:

Disregard the 2 ITS in my last post. LOL

  10. socalbigbroncofan says:

oops. sorry. gregg williams would have been a whole other problem. lol. me too. besides us did not think greebay goes down the way they did. i think i will root for the 49ers. lots of friends and family 9er fans. my 11 yr old said he wanted them to win, after he cried from yesterday’s lost. i told him he was a true fan now.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

Poor guy, I’m glad I don’t react to losses like that anymore, it would be enough to kill me at my age…

  12. tnalen66 says:

well so far i only got one game wrong this week and yah you guessed it.

  13. tnalen66 says:

I thought the 9ers would win cuz of their D so i was surprised on how they won.

  14. socalbigbroncofan says:

yea it was heartbreaker. and the game. lol.

  15. strandoftds82 says:

As you get older, its just water off the back. I’m over it! LOL

  16. baylinorcrush says:

The Seahawks are acting like the rookie team they are. Once again it shows winning in regular season has very little to do with winning in the playoffs… Boys game, Men game…

  17. socalbigbroncofan says:

thats how i feel. already done. still a football fan and a few games left. any one want to guess who going to the sb.
    mine is 49ers and patriots.

  18. baylinorcrush says:

    Who cares, LOL.

  19. socalbigbroncofan says:

    good for you bay. lmfao

  20. socalbigbroncofan says:

i will say it was very funny to see people talk crap on manning all off season then jump on the band wagon after we win the division and #1 seed. then as soon as we lose right back off. what a joke.

  21. broncosfans 18 says:

    WOW, seattles -2 1/2 and -120, O/U 22 in 2rd half, Falcons gonna blow them out, WATCH…

  22. baylinorcrush says:

I think on this site it’s rather obvious that the ones who jumped off the Manning band wagon since yesterday are mainly Tebow fan first. They just can’t let go, how sad….

  23. baylinorcrush says:

    Move on, moving on…

What are you going to do about Fox ball John?

    That’s what I wanna know.

  24. still1972 says:

I agree with Bay on this Our head coach has no kahunas. Conservatism in the NFL today is a thing of the past. You have to be aggressive in all phases of the game. Foxball is outdated and will not suceed in todays game. Sure you are going to win some games but when it comes to the playoffs you have to hang it all out. And as long as he is here you won’t see it haappen.

  25. tlcat06 says:

Haha SEAHAWKS! Epic fail! Goooooo Falcons!

  26. strandoftds82 says:

    Happy Birthday Ticat06!!

  27. CARAMELLOO says:

The Broncos aren’t going to the super bowl so I honestly could care less who goes. Man I hope some team plucks McCoy away from us! Fox, Manning, Bailey, Miller, McCoy, and everyone else needs to strongly apologize to Trindon Holliday!! Man had a career day that would make Neon Deon proud and all for naught.

Our flaws and the hype finally caught up with us last night.

  28. oldsouthstander says:

?????? WTF???? I posted about 20-30 BBBPs and they’re nowhere to be seen!!!
    I’ll try again later.

  29. baylinorcrush says:

Maybe one of the blogger’s name you posted has been banned so your post won’t show.

  30. strandoftds82 says:

    Atlanta just might choke.

  31. 1nOnlyTRB says:

ATL will win … i saw them winning … didn’t see us losing tho. They say almost every season 1 team with the bye loses and a wild card team make it to the big game. Never thought we would be the team with bye to lose …. and ravens not seahawks might be the week team to make it … i doubt it tho. They aren’t good enough. And i see Pats returning the ball to the house at least once against them. If they play texans they stand a better chance.

Has as been said, alot of individuals didn’t play their best but the blames starts from the top down. It was only this teams pure talent that kept them in it. Never seen a staff do so little with so much talent. Our rushers neutralized, secondary beat deep multiple times without adjustments. Conservative play. Inability to adapt to the fact that ravens weren’t letting us go deep like we usually do. Im sure Tracy porter woulda helped. And to culminate it, NFL refs looking like replacements. But we lost it from top to bottom, its not always the most talented team that wins, and in my opinion we are the most talented and complete in all 3 phases. I wouldn’t be shocked if we drafted a safety next year … AGAIN.

  33. OTbroncos says:

Ughhhh…… I feel like I was sucker punched in the mouth. Such a brutal loss.

Few things after reading the comments:

    1) what a joke for a Ravens fan trolling our board, doing to us what he claimed we did to him. Beyond pathetic.

    2) I didn’t like this match up from the beginning. The Ravens we being completely undervalued, discredited by virtually everyone. You had a team trying to avenge an embarrassing home loss, together with an “us against the world” mindset. One of the most dangerous things in all of sports IMO, and I hope it will help the Texans today.

    3) little disappointed to see so many people throw our players under the bus so quickly. Many players made bad plays yesterday, we could have won if any single bad play was corrected. It can’t be put on any one player IMO. If we had got the ball to bounce our way, and won, no mention of any of this would take place.

    4) there really should be a rule against coaches interviewing for jobs before their team is eliminated. This is two years in a row with McCoy, and we as fans can argue for days about who is calling the plays, but we can’t disagree that it’s a major distraction.

  34. Bronco_Turtle says:

What up OT… Sucker/Donkey Punched is a very good desrciption of the that indescribable feeling that I’m sure most of us are feeling today

  35. 1nOnlyTRB says:

So now we have failed at a miraculous season and a superiorly talented season in the past two years. Sucks but only the best survive. It will be a shame to be the new chargers of the AFC west … a boat load of talent and playoff birth but nothing to show for it.

    TRB

  36. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Champ may not want to do it but i think we need to revisit that safety talk again. Still a tremendous cover corner but he doesn’t have the speed he used to and we keep getting murdered at safety.

    NO!

  46. strandoftds82 says:

How dry I am! Hicup!!!! LMAO!!

  47. OTbroncos says:

Woody Paige did Peyton Manning a huge favor by blaming Fox, to take the attention away, and perhaps it was intentional. I’m not defending Fox, but we as fans have no idea who was really calling the plays. I’ve heard several people say how Fox lets his coordinators coordinate, and we know Peyotn is the master at calling the audible. We simple don’t know if was Fox, McCoy, or Manning with some of these play calls. We will never know.

The only thing I do know for sure, is that Mike McCoy had a weekend full of job interviews, for a promotion and a big payday. It’s human nature to let this cloud your focus with the task at hand. By taking a rational view, and looking at just what we know, McCoy would be the one to blame IMO. Pretty ironic that after this loss, he will be lucky to get hired, and will return next year. Fox will take the blame, we will do well again next season, all will be forgotten, and McCoy will again have interviews during the playoffs..

  48. ORnBL2theCore says:

As great as Kup has been for us he looked lost on several occasions yesterday. Definitely a bit rusty after missing all those games, and Champ didn’t look like the Champ we all know. Off-days happen, but playoffs are no time to fall apart like that. Peyton had 3 turnovers (although 2 were suspect). Our veteran play wasn’t that great yesterday.

Scoring 35 points in a game should all but win it for you, but our D just couldn’t get it done. We gave up the most points all year in the playoffs against Flacco? It just doesn’t make sence. No pass rush to speak of, run D couldn’t contain Rice, and we had way too many plays over our head. It’s very difficult to win when the D gives up that many plays.

The coaching was also suspect, especially since our D wasn’t playing solid. How do you not go for the win on 3rd and 7 when your defense has been giving up big deep plays all afternoon? Why not give Peyton a shot at points at the end of each half? That’s what we pay the man for!

Whether we like it or not, the offseason is here. I’m very excited to see what this team holds in store for us next year. We have a very complete team in all three phases. They showed greatness for most of this season, and with another offseason to gel the skies the limit. Keep your heads up Broncos Country…atleast we’re not Raider or Chief fans!!!

    ORANGE & BLUE FOR LIFE!!!
