Broncos vs. Raiders: Fourth Quarter Notes

November 23rd, 2008 - 5:27pm by Gray Caldwell

15:00: The Raiders have a first-and-10 at the Denver 30-yard line. JaMarcus Russell drops back and lofts a pass to Darren McFadden who was streaking down the sideline. His legs got tangled up with Marquand Manuel’s and both players fell down. A flag is thrown and pass interference is called on Manuel. It’s a first-and-goal for the Raiders at the six-yard line.

14:54: Justin Fargas takes the handoff two yards before being brought down by Marcus Thomas. That brings up second-and-goal from the four-yard line, and Russell fakes a handoff before finding Ashley Lelie in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown.

The Sebastian Janikowski extra point is good, and the Raiders’ lead over the Broncos is extended to 24-10.

14:08: Royal is back deep to receive. The kick goes out of the back of the end zone, and the Broncos offense sets up at the 20-yard line. Cutler takes the snap out of the shotgun formation and gets the ball to a diving Tony Scheffler, who hauls it in as he falls out of bounds for an 18-yard gain.

Oakland Head Coach Tom Cable throws out the challenge flag, however, and the play will be reviewed.

The play is overturned — Scheffler apparently had his right foot in bounds but his left hand touched out of bounds before his other foot came down. Second-and-10 for Denver at its own 20.

14:03: Cutler is lined up in the shotgun with four receivers out wide. He takes the snap and gets it to Brandon Stokley, who picks up two yards before being dragged down.

Third-and-8 from their own 22 for the Broncos. Cutler is in shotgun with four receivers again, and he throws an interception to the left sideline. Thomas Howard comes away with it and runs out of bounds. The Raiders take over at the Denver 43.

On the first play after the interception, Justin Fargas takes the hand off and scampers 21 yards to the Denver 22. On the next play he follows it up with a four-yard gain, setting up second-and-6 for Oakland.

12:14: Fargas is stopped for no gain on second down, but on third down he grabs nine yards and sets Oakland up with a first-and-goal from the nine-yard line. He proceeds to take another carry up the left side for a three-yard gain on first down.

10:30: On second-and-goal, the crowd is getting into it, but Darren McFadden takes a carry, fights his way up the left sideline and gets knocked out of bounds by Roderick Rogers at the one-yard line just before stretching the ball out over the pylon.

That sets up third-and-goal at the one-yard line for Oakland. The INVESCO Field faithful are on their feet, but McFadden plows up the middle into the end zone for the fourth Raiders touchdown of the day. The Janikowski extra point is good, and Oakland leads the Broncos by 21 points, 31-10.

9:09: After a one-yard loss on a Peyton Hillis run and an incomplete pass to Brandon Stokley, Brandon Marshall catches a Cutler pass on third-and-11, turns around and sprints his way for some extra yardage, getting a first down and putting the Broncos in Raiders territory.

Hillis takes the first-down carry for 12 yards, setting up another first down at the Oakland 37-yard line.

8:04: After an incomplete pass on first down, the Broncos are called for an illegal motion on second down, setting up second-and-15 at the Oakland 42. Cutler throws the ball over Marshall’s head and out of bounds, setting up third-and-15.

7:43: Cutler is in the shotgun and hands off to Hillis on a draw play. The crowd is showing some displeasure as the Broncos are left with a fourth-and-10.

Cutler completes the pass to Marshall for a first down, but there’s a flag on the play. There are two fouls on the play — holding on the defense, and a personal foul chop block on the offense. The penalties offset, and the offense will replay fourth down.

6:52: This time around the pass falls incomplete, intended for Marshall. Stokley sprints over to the referee to argue for a penalty, but no flag is thrown. The Raiders take over at their own 37-yard line.

6:29: On first down, Fargas picks up two yards, and Spencer Larsen is shaken up on the play. He’s helped off the field, and Fargas picks up five yards on second down. On third down, Russell bootlegs to his right and gets a first down before being touched down by Marquand Manuel.

Play is stopped because there’s a Bronco down on the field — I can’t tell who it is yet. Looks like it was Josh Shaw, and he walks off the field flanked by trainers.

3:50: It’s second-and-3 for the Raiders and they pick up one yard on a run by McFadden.

On third-and-1, McFaden bursts forward for the first down before being brought down after five yards by Marcus Thomas.

2:20: Fargas takes the carry on first down, geting close to the marker. It is a first down as the clock winds down to the two minute warning.

2:00: Russell takes two knees to close out the game.

The Oakland Raiders come away with the three-touchdown victory, 31-10. The Broncos move to 6-5 with the loss. Next week the team travels to New York to face the Jets.

This was not just a loss.

This was a lie down and kick my ass because I just don’t care giveaway to the lousiest team in the NFL.

And by the way, buy a dictionary and learn English.

And another thing, putting your fate into the hands of someone else (like the colts) and hoping that SD continues to screw up even more than we have will not get us past the coin toss in the playoffs. If we make it that far.

If we play this way against anybody else in the league, the players and coaching staff can go ahead and make vacation plans for January.

It is “broncofannsd”, not broncosfannd—-for the love of God

  5. broncos20 says:

    wow,,broncoinexile you sure sound like a GENIUS…
now I see who was hurt the most by my comment… good thing you know who you are…
and for your information, i’m not american and english is not my first language..i speak 5 other native languages..so i dont care if blatantly miss-spelled my “english” thank you..but thanks for the thought…

and another thing, i’m not putting the my fate in the colts hoping their win would keep us closer to playoffs…i just dont like the Chargers having a better weekend then we do…simple!!

so yeah, go on and make your vacation plans, no wonder you’re in exile..as for me i’m staying here and cheering for my beloved Broncos.

I am a genius and even if not, a whole lot smarter than any pathetic loser who can post this with pride:

I was not and am not hurt by your comments.

I was hurt and it still hurts to try and read your insipid post due to your abysmal grammar, lame typing and incoherent thought processes.

My point, and it still stands, is that the amazingly poor play the Broncos demonstrated today won’t amount to anything other than a very fast exit from the playoffs. Assuming that they manage to get that far.

Stay wherever you want and love the Broncos all you want, I never called that into question. I simply said this team needs to play with more conviction, heart and passion if they truly want the support of the fans. I have the right to be disappointed and unhappy with the pathetic performance from today. Anyone who has any self respect should be disappointed, the Broncos let the worst team in the league come to Denver and embarrass them. Not something to be proud of.

Call me blue, call me whatever you want, but I expect more from a team than this.

  7. broncos20 says:

impressive dictionary you have there,,aha,,sorry if my lame typing-incoherent thought processing-abyssmal grammar offended your intellectuality.

dude, chill out, i dont care how you feel.. i dont care what your point is..
i’m not even clarifying whether you’re calling where i am into question…

we all ready know about all the play mismanagment…sad but true..
i’m ready to move on to the next game..

  8. broncos20 says:

i give up broncoinexile..apparently i’m not smart enough to argue with you…waste of my time…

  9. broncoinexile says:

Write back in one of your other 5 “native” languages (certainly a misnomer at best). It can’t be any less coherent than anything else you’ve put up here.

If you’re too lazy to actually spell correctly and post something resembling anything other than incoherence, expect to get called on it. If you want to question my intellect, you’re going to need help.

I don’t care that you don’t care how I feel. I did not ask you to nor do I care if you do or do not. Nor do I care that you can’t figure out what my point is.

If critiquing the “performance” from today is “garbage” and “nagging” don’t read it. Go on your way cheering for your beloved Broncos as they claw their way to the cellar of the NFL and displace the Lions as the most pathetic professional sports team.

Some of us don’t look forward to having a 6-10 record or another early departure from the playoffs. If you can’t figure that out, not my concern.

As long as you’re not where I am, I don’t care where you are either.

Look forward to the next game, hopefully it can’t be any worse.

    Commas are used singularly.

Periods are used singularly or three in a row as an ellipsis to demonstrate the omission of words.

Also, people with self respect capitalize the pronoun “I”.

Again waste of my time arguing about grammar on a blog.

I’m embarrassed by the Broncos today. We’re a poorly coached, young, banged up team… Looks like we’ll make the play-offs maybe though!!! Funny. At least we’re not Detroit.

  12. RSH says:

Lots of so-called Broncos “fans” out on the great World Wide Web and elsewhere are demanding Mike Shanahan be fired. Columnists like Mark Kizla of The Denver Post only fuel such “fans’” desire.

My response? Go ahead, run Mike Shanahan out of town, it will be to your own demise. The minute the Broncos cut Shanahan lose, the Chargers will hire him and with the talent San Diego has on the offensive side of the ball, Shanahan will terrorize the Broncos for years to come. Mr. Kizla and all those calling for Shanahan’s head, who are you going to bring in to replace be head coach? Bill Cowher? Not a chance. Cowher will go somewhere that will give him complete control and huge bucks, most likely Cleveland. So, who else is out there? Jim Fassel, is that who you want?

Losing to Oakland at home by three touchdowns was as humiliating as it gets. It was inexcusable. Denver just isn’t that good especially on defense. Those who were expecting a Super Bowl, obviously, forgot this was a rebuilding year and young teams like this one will do what they did Sunday from time to time. But hey, if the Broncos want to fire Shanahan, go ahead, but I will be the first to say, it will be a mistake and will come back to haunt the franchise for years to come.

  13. brian_schneider says:

Just like twice before. We play a team that is struggling and we think we can just walk in and take a win. MIA and KC were the same way. We thought we could just take a win and nope. Happens every time. Well it’s a good thing IND beat SD. So we can still stay two games up. I really thought our team was changing for the better. After watching that game I don’t know if we have.

  14. Broncomania56 says:

This loss was absolutely humiliating for the fans. Unfortunately we do not make that big of a difference on the field. The Broncos have proven that by winning two straight on the road. Unfortunately, this team is young, and I believe gets a little cocky when they taste success. Remember Young Broncos this is the NFL, you have to show up and play every week. You have to have a game plan and execute it.

Unfortunately a sad fact is that if we fumble on the first drive it sets the tempo on how our offense plays. The defense if left out on the field to long will surely fall apart. The formula is as simple as this. Stick to the basics offense, take what the defense will give you, put together long drives and score on every drive, TD’s or FG’s (TD’s preferred). If the offense gives the defense something to protect they seem to play better. Our Defense is in far worse shape than the offense (injuries). Above all else, play every game like your jobs/life depends on it. Shanahan is not the reason this team is loosing, it’s the players execution of the play calling.

The coaching staff is putting these guys in the right places to make plays, unfortunately the plays are not being made. Mike Shanahan does not pass, kick, punt or tackle. This was a team loss. I believe they were looking ahead and lost site of who was in front of them. That is a sure way to get your butt kicked on sunday’s. Even if it’s against the Raiders. Records are out the window in big rival games like this. Did the Broncos think that the Raiders did not revenge on their minds? Did they think the Raiders were going to show up and lye down for them? Apparently so, as for the results of that game plan, speaks for itself. Guys this team has some growing to do, Needs a new defensive line and a new attitude. There is plenty of talent, they need to find there hearts to go with it.

Happy Thanksgiving to all, and GO Broncos Beat the JETS!!!!!!!

  15. hrdnokd says:

Shanny you need to do something there guy, LIKE HAVE BETTER DRAFTS. The entire D line looks awful out there, no one gets pressure, no one stops the run. I mean my goodness we are the very definition of BAD. How about if we STOP rotating guys in at LB every other freaking play and BLITZ every now and again BESIDES 3rd and longs?

  16. greekbronco9 says:

Its on the coaching staff when your team is unprepared and doesn’t show up to play. Im not calling for Shanahan’s job (yet), but I seriously think his best coaching days are behind him. Or maybe he was just lucky to have Hall of Famers on his previous teams to make him look good. Either way a fire needs to be lit under this team and by letting Shanahan think he’s untouchable isn’t a good way of doing it. Come on, 3 Defensive Coordinators in 3 years?? and at this rate looks like 4. At some point he’s not going to be able to blame others and put it on himself. Just remember, Shanahan has the final say on everything that happens on this team and if he can’t pull this team together then the organization needs to move on.

  17. RSH says:

Have better drafts hrdnokd? Denver has had some excellent drafts recently with Cutler, Scheffler, Marshall, Dumervil, Clady, Royal, Hillis, Larsen, etc. As Broncomania56 pointed out this team is very young (as a result of such draft picks) and got a little full of itself before playing Oakland at home. The loss was inexcusable, but saying that having “better drafts” would have kept Denver from losing this one is an incorrect analysis.

  18. lynch4prez says:

story of the season so far is that we beat the teams who ‘experts’ expect to beat us and lose to the teams who we should beat.. we play to the level of our competition, which is a part of being inexperienced, they’ll grow out of it and be the team we know they can be

  19. hrdnokd says:

RSH, one or 2 good drafts do not make up for 13 other average to bad ones. How’s the draft from 2 years ago working out for us? That Jarvis Moss sure is a sack master huh? No one can stop Tim Crowder, except the bench and I guess Marcus Thomas is a BEAST? My GOD, how many DT’s have more INT’s than sacks in the NFL? It’s a JOKE! So no, you DRAFT BETTER PLAYERS and you get better results. You ever wonder why teams like the Steelers, Patriots and Colts stay on top? Check the drafts they have. You add free agenst that work to your teams strengths, in 3 years we’ve added ONE that’s worked out….and Shanny calls those shots too.

  20. brian_schneider says:

I’m not embarrassed as a fan, if I were a player then I’d be embarrassed. That performance was ugly. We obviously did not play well on both sides of the ball, pretty much the story of the season so far. I’m just going to stop hoping that we start playing better. Every time it looks like we know what we’re doing and playing well we fall apart.

It isn’t the draft that causes this. It is the players, the lack of leadership, the lack of toughness, the lack of the will to fight to win, the lack of intensity, the lack of pride. We have been fortunate with some of latest drafts like many have said.

I’m not sure what is up with Shanny. I’m not going to say fire him but I do think that something needs to happen. Maybe Shanny should start calling the plays or something, I don’t know. I do know that this season has been a little disturbing. With all the injuries the inconsistency I’m 25 but my heart probably thinks that I’m 75 with the way the season has been turning out.

I’m not going to say the season is over by all means. I really want us to make it to post-season play. I also want us to get healed up, get some leadership, some intensity, for god sake, get hungry to win and be awesome next season. I’m not saying this season is lost, I just want next season to be better, obviously.

    Go Broncos!!!!

  21. hrdnokd says:

You DRAFT guys that are tough, guys that WANT to lead. Your defensive linemen are supposed to be nasty, disliked by the media and called dirty buy opposing teams. Eb is about the only guy we have that fits that description and his best days are gone. We need a middle backer that scares anyone from sitting in the middle of the field waiting to catch the ball. Am I the only one that remember Al Wilson DESTROYING Troy Brown just a few seasons ago when he tried to catch a pass in the middle of the field? We don’t have any safeties or lb’s that fit that description.
