Broncos vs. Raiders – First Half Live Blog

December 20th, 2009 - 2:03pm by Chris Gentilviso

COIN TOSS: Matt Prater is set to kick off, as the Broncos won the opening coin toss but elected to defer to the second half.

Q1 – 15:00: Prater’s kickoff is taken by Gary Russell six yards deep in the end zone. He takes a knee and the Raiders will start at their own 20-yard line.

Q1 – 14:18: Starting on defense for Denver: Ryan McBean, Ronald Fields, Kenny Peterson, Mario Haggan, D.J. Williams, Andra Davis, Elvis Dumervil, Champ Bailey, Andre’ Goodman, Brian Dawkins and David Bruton. Raiders QB Charlie Frye’s first pass was deflected at the line of scrimmage for an incompletion, and Justin Fargas followed with a 3-yard run on second down.

Q1 – 13:22: Off a three-step drop on 3rd-and-7, Frye completed to Chaz Schilens on a quick slant. But Goodman stopped him about a yard shy of the marker, forcing a Shane Lechler punt. Lechler’s kick was fielded by Eddie Royal and returned 13 yards to the 35-yard line. That’s where Denver will take over.

Q1 – 12:42: Starting on offense for the Broncos: Kyle Orton, Knowshon Moreno, Jabar Gaffney, Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal, Ryan Clady, Russ Hochstein, Casey Wiegmann, Chris Kuper, Tyler Polumbus and Daniel Graham. After a three-yard sweep right to Moreno, Orton looked for him on a quick pass to the right flat but it fell incomplete.

Q1 – 12:22: On 3rd-and-7, Graham was whistled for a false start, backing the Broncos up to their own 33-yard line. Lining up in the shotgun with three wide receivers at his disposal, Orton took a deep drop and hit Royal at midfield for 18 yards and a first down.

Q1 – 11:12: With the ball spotted inside Oakland territory at the 49, Moreno bursts up the middle for an 8-yard gain on the first-down carry. On second down, Orton again went to Moreno as the lone setback. He went off right tackle Tyler Polumbus, picking up a first down at the Raiders’ 34-yard line.

Q1 – 10:38: Eluding pressure from Gerard Warren, Orton finds an open Moreno in the left flat for 21 yards and another first down. The Broncos are in now in the red zone at the Raiders’ 13-yard line.

Q1 – 9:10: Giving Moreno a breather, LaMont Jordan takes the handoff for a six-yard gain. Sporting no-huddle on 2nd and 4, Orton takes a QB sneak for a modest 1-yard gain. On 3rd and 3, Orton goes to Moreno but he is stopped for a 1-yard gain.

Q1 – 8:40: Matt Prater comes in to attempt a 23-yard field goal from the left hash mark and hits it. He has now converted 12 of his last 13 attempts.

Broncos 3, Raiders 0

Q1 – 8:39: Prater’s kickoff sails to the back of the end zone and Gary Russell fields it out of bounds for the touchback. The Raiders will start at their own 20-yard line.

Q1 – 7:07: Oakland lines up on first down in the I-formation and Frye completes to Schilens for a 4-yard gain in the left flat. The ball just escaped the jump of Kenny Peterson. The Raiders shift to the run on second down, with Darren McFadden picking up three yards to set up 3rd and short. Frye goes out of the shotgun, with four wide receivers. He lofts up a pass on the right side intended for Johnnie Lee Higgins, but his pass is picked off by Champ Bailey. The Oakland turnover gives the Broncos the ball at the Raiders’ 41-yard line.

Q1 – 6:55: Orton takes advantage of the field position on first down, rolling right and hitting Brandon Marshall on a 24-yard post. The Broncos are back in the red zone at the Raiders’ 17-yard line.

Q1 – 5:50: Moreno takes the first-down carry up the middle for a five yard gain. On second down, Orton rolls right and throws a screen back across the field to Ryan Clady. The massive lineman makes the catch and has his legs taken out from under him after a short gain. Flags fly, as Clady never reported as an eligible receiver, resulting in a 5-yard illegal touching penalty.

Q1 – 5:45: Facing 2nd and 10 from the Oakland 17-yard line, Orton again lines up in the shotgun with four wide receivers. He takes a three-step drop, before colliding with Tyler Polumbus. Oakland DE Matt Shaughnessy was credited with the 5-yard sack.

Q1 – 4:10: On 3rd and long, Orton completes the wide receiver screen to Eddie Royal, but he is stopped for a 3-yard loss. Matt Prater comes in and connects on a 43-yard field goal, extending the Broncos’ lead.

Broncos 6, Raiders 0

Q1 – 4:09: Prater continues to provide a positive impact in the field position game. His kickoff sails out of the end zone, resulting in his third touchback of the first quarter. Oakland will start at its own 20-yard line.

Q1 – 4:03: Out of a tight formation on first down, Charlie Frye is flushed out of the pocket by Mario Haggan. He throws the ball away off to the right side, but no receiver was in the vicinity. Frye is flagged for intentional grounding, resulting in a 15-yard walkoff to the 5-yard line.

Q1 – 2:50: On 2nd and 25 from their own 5, the Raiders hand off to Justin Fargas for a 1-yard loss. Fargas pushes ahead on third down for a 6-yard gain, but with an impending 4th-and-20, Shane Lechler comes in to punt for Oakland.

Q1 – 2:36: Lechler booms a 65-yard punt, which is returned 14 yards by rookie Kenny McKinley to the Broncos’ 39-yard line. That’s where Denver will take over.

Q1 – 1:39: The Broncos open up in I-form, with Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal flanked to the left side. Knowshon Moreno goes off that left side, picking up seven yards on first down. Out of the pocket on second down, Orton hands off again to Moreno, who crosses midfield for eight yards and a first down.

Q1 – 0:50: In Raiders territory for the third time on three offensive drives, Orton tries a screen pass to Moreno but it falls incomplete. Denver goes back to the run on second down, with LaMont Jordan leaning rumbling forward for five yards. Facing 3rd and 5 at the Oakland 41-yard line, Orton sports trips right but looks for his lone receiver on the left — Eddie Royal. Royal makes a spin move near the left sideline, but he was covered well by Raiders CB Chris Johnson, and the ball went incomplete.

Q1 – 0:35: Mitch Berger comes in for his first kick of the afternoon, and shanks it off to the right side for a 7-yard punt. Oakland takes over at its own 34-yard line.

Q1 – 0:00: Frye executes a strong bootleg with Darren McFadden, rolling left for a 26-yard gain. Oakland ends the first quarter with its longest play of the period, and we’re moving to the second quarter.

END OF FIRST QUARTER: Broncos 6, Raiders 0

Q2 – 15:00: Facing a 1st-and-10 from the Denver 40-yard line, Oakland lines up in a trips right formation, with McFadden as the lone setback. Frye goes deep for Louis Murphy, but the ball is batted away by Tony Carter. But Andra Davis is flagged for an illegal contact penalty, giving Oakland an automatic first down at the Denver 35-yard line.

Q2 – 13:17: McFadden goes off right tackle, but he is met quickly by Ronald Fields after a 2-yard gain. On second down, Frye goes back to McFadden, but he is again hit quickly by Fields and Brian Dawkins. The 2-yard loss sets up 3rd and 10 for the Raiders and moves Frye to the shotgun. He takes a 5-step drop and hits Johnnie Lee Higgins on a crossing route for 12 yards and a first down.

Q2 – 13:01: With a 1st-and-10 at the Denver 23-yard line, Michael Bush takes his first carry of the afternoon and finds a huge hole for a 23-yard touchdown. Sebastian Janikowski tacks on the extra point, giving Oakland the slim lead.

Raiders 7, Broncos 6

Q2 – 13:00: The left-footed Janikowski sends a line-drive kick to the back of the end zone. Eddie Royal downs it and the Broncos will start at their own 20-yard line.

Q2 – 12:34: With Moreno as the lone setback, Orton works play-action, rolling right and hitting Daniel Graham over the middle of the field for a 15-yard gain.

Q2 – 11:45: On 1st and 10 from the 35-yard line, Moreno takes the inside handoff but is stopped for no gain. Orton goes back to the shotgun and pass on second down, hitting Marshall for a modest 4-yard gain. With a 3rd-and-6, Orton goes to a four-wide receiver package. He spots Tony Scheffler crossing the middle of the field, but pressure came from Raiders S Mike Mitchell and the pass landed incomplete.

Q2 – 11:06: Berger comes in for his second punt of the afternoon, which is returned by Johnnie Lee Higgins for 15 yards to the Oakland 35-yard line. Newly-signed Vernon Fox makes the tackle on the 41-yard kick.

Q2 – 10:39: On first down, Frye sets up the screen with McFadden, but Champ Bailey comes up from his cornerback post to make a quick stop. Raiders G Cooper Carlisle is whistled for being an ineligible man downfield, backing the Raiders into a 1st-and-15 from their own 30-yard line.

Q2 – 9:54: McFadden takes the first-down handoff three yards up the middle, where he is met by D.J. Williams. On second and long, Frye takes a 5-step drop and looks for Louis Murphy downfield. The pass is broken up by Bailey, but Elvis Dumervil is called for a roughing-the-passer penalty. The 15-yard miscue gives the Raiders a 1st-and-10 at their own 48-yard line.

Q2 – 8:23: Bush goes off right tackle but is hit quickly by the combo of Andra Davis and Vonnie Holliday. After a 3-yard gain, Oakland goes in the I-form on second down. Bush follows FB Luke Lawton, but is stopped by Le Kevin Smith after a 1-yard gain. On 3rd and 6, Frye moves to the shotgun, corrals a high snap, and hits Murphy right at the marker for a first down.

Q2 – 8:17: The Raiders head to the line of scrimmage, but play is halted as Head Coach Josh McDaniels throws his red flag. He is challenging the ruling on the field of a completed pass to Murphy, as the catch was made in tight quarters right near the first-down marker on the right sideline.

Coach’s Challenge # 1: Referee Alberto Riveron rules that Murphy had control and got both feet down. The Broncos are charged with their first timeout.

Q2 – 6:45: After a 3-yard run by McFadden, Frye rolls out and hits Lawton for a 1-yard gain. In his first career start, David Bruton came up to make the strong tackle. On 3rd and 6, Frye looks deep for Chaz Schilens, but Tony Carter breaks up the pass, bringing up fourth down.

Q2 – 6:40: Sebastian Janikowski comes in to attempt a 55-yard field goal, and nails it well through the uprights.

Raiders 10, Broncos 6

Q2 – 6:39: The field goal has officially been ruled as a 54-yard kick. Janikowski now comes in to kick off, and the ball is downed by Eddie Royal in the end zone. The Broncos will start at their own 20-yard line.

Q2 – 5:31: One injury update on the Oakland Side – CB Chris Johnson has an ankle injury and his return is probable. Sporting trips left with Scheffler and Graham as blockers, Moreno goes off that side for a 6-yard gain. Moreno switches to the right side, but is met head on by S Tyvon Branch for a 2-yard loss. On 3rd and 6, Orton steps into the shotgun, but fires long to LaMont Jordan for an incomplete pass.

Q2 – 5:19: Mitch Berger’s 45-yard punt is aided by an illegal-block-in-the-back penalty on Raiders LB Sam Williams. Oakland is backed up 10 yards to its own 28-yard line, and decides to call its first timeout of the half.

Q2 – 4:03: On first down, Frye lines up in the shotgun and hits rookie TE Brandon Myers on a quick 6-yard gain in the right flat. Out of the I-formation, Bush follows the blocking of Lawton on the right side for four yards and a Raiders first down.

Q2 – 3:40: Facing pressure from Mario Haggan, Frye is flushed right out of the pocket. He fires an errant pass that hits the chest of Andra Davis, but falls incomplete.

Q2 – 2:26: On second and long, Davis responds, teaming up with Brian Dawkins to stop Bush after a 1-yard gain. Bush gets the call again on third down, taking the delayed handoff for 13 yards and a first down.

Q2 – 2:00: Into Broncos territory at the 48-yard line, McFadden bursts ahead for four yards, bringing us to the two-minute warning.

Q2 – 2:00: Out of the break, Frye goes play action to Bush and hits rookie Louis Murphy on the right sideline for 14 yards and a first down.

Q2 – 1:14: With the clock continuing to move, Frye hands off to Bush, who jukes his way up the middle of the field for a 13-yard gain and another first down. Into the red zone, the Raiders call their second timeout of the first half.

Q2 – 0:43: Lining up in a pass formation on first down, Frye looks to do that. But he’s flushed out of the pocket by Ryan McBean and forced to throw it away. On second down, Frye fakes to Bush and completes a 7-yard pass to TE Tony Stewart at the Denver 10-yard line. That completion prompts the Broncos to use their second timeout of the half.

Q2 – 0:37: On 3rd and 3 at the 10, Frye eludes pressure and looks for Murphy in the end zone. But rookie David Bruton makes a big pass breakup, setting up fourth down.

Q2 – 0:32: Janikowski comes in for a 28-yard field goal attempt and converts it, extending the Raiders’ lead to seven points.

Raiders 13, Broncos 6

Q2 – 0:31: Janikowski’s kickoff goes out of the end zone, giving the Broncos the ball at their own 20-yard line with just over a half-minute left in the half.

Q2 – 0:10: Working out of the shotgun on first down, Orton is rushed by former Bronco Gerard Warren and forced to throw the ball away. Orton eludes more pressure on second down and throws incomplete to Brandon Marshall. The ball was jarred loose by Raiders S Michael Huff, but the officials rule that it was an incomplete pass. On third and long, Orton completes to Jabar Gaffney but he is wrapped up two yards shy of the marker. The Raiders call their final timeout of the first half.

Q2 – 0:00: Mitch Berger’s 45-yard punt is downed by Vernon Fox at the 27-yard line, marking the final play of the first half. Thanks for following our first-half blog. Be sure to switch over to the second half one for all the action over the final 30 minutes of regulation play.

HALFTIME: Raiders 13, Broncos 6

*Q2 – 0:00: The officials rule that the Broncos had an illegal touch on the punt, and the two teams are heading back out on the field for one more Oakland play.

**Q2 – 0:00: Darren McFadden picks up 12 yards on the run, officially ending the first half of play. We’re heading over to the second-half live blog, so be sure to follow along.
