Broncos vs. Patriots: Key Plays

December 18th, 2011 - 8:05pm by Stuart Zaas

First-and-10 from the New England 38 (11:20, 1st quarter): Jeremiah Johnson took his first carry of the day for a gain of 25 yards into the Patriots’ red zone. Denver capitalized two plays later when Tim Tebow powered the ball into the end zone from 9-yards out to give Denver a 6-0 lead on its first possession of the game.

Third-and-9 from the New England 21 (9:04, 1st quarter): Tom Brady stayed patient on third down and found his tight end Aaron Hernandez open over the middle. The play resulted in a 46-yard gain and sustained the Patriots’ first drive of the game, which culminated in a Brady-to-Chad Ochocinco 33-yard touchdown pass two plays later.

First-and-10 from the Denver 23 (8:37, 2nd quarter): Ron Brace stripped Lance Ball after a 2-yard gain and Rob Ninkovich recovered the loose ball at the Broncos 19-yard line. New England turned the turnover into a 21-yard field goal from Stephen Gostkowski to reclaim the lead at 17-16.

First-and-10 from the Denver 46 (5:18, 2nd quarter): Mark Anderson broke into the Broncos backfield and strip-sacked Tebow, also managing to recover the fumble. New England converted that turnover into a Brady 1-yard rushing touchdown, extending their lead to 24-16.

3rd-and-7 from the Denver 45 (10:19, 3rd quarter): With the Patriots driving into Denver territory, Quinton Carter came on a safety blitz and sacked Brady for a four-yard loss, leading to a Patriots punt.

3rd-and-8 from the 50 (5:16, 3rd quarter): After Denver had strung together three first downs, Tebow was sacked on third down by Mark Anderson for a 10-yard loss. The Broncos were forced to punt, and the Patriots took advantage with a scoring drive that culminated in a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Danny Woodhead to push New England’s advantage to 34-16.

Bay, your take BEFORE the game was right on spot, you said our secondary would get killed and they did. I have been optimistic and I will continue to be. This team is still young and learning and really I did not expect to win yesterday because in the previous few games the teams did not have a Tom Brady as their QB. But all in all that is why I ask you questions and listen to your advice because you do look at things differently than most. I do think that Tim is progressing every game, I don’t know how many years Mr. Brady has been playing but I would like to think that Tim will soon be able to match up (maybe next year). They did do a side by side comparison of Tim and Tom’s throwing motions and they are almost identicle. That is BIG strides.

  2. savinghyrule says:

That throwing motion comparison shot was interesting. The motion itself was similar, but Tim took longer to let go of the ball.

  3. CurtOU says:

If we lose to the Bills but beat the Chiefs, we can’t be passed in the division. If we beat the Bills and lose to the Chiefs, we are in trouble. So ya, just win both.

As always, control your fate and rely on no one.

Dunno how much I can blame the TEs Bay .. Safeties yes, but I don’t think McCoy knows how to uses Tight Ends. They are supposed to be a young QBs best friend, instead they are just used for blocking (Virgil green as blocking very well by the way). Thats that stuff he learned from McDaniels. Where TEs are nothing but glorified linemen. I mean we go multiple games without a single TE catching a pass. Maybe they just don’t get enough seperation on their few pass plays which i guess would be their fault and would support why they are a dissapointment like u said.

  5. brian_schneider says:

Tebow’s throwing motion reminds me of cricket pitchers throw…like an overhand windmill throw.

  6. 1nOnlyTRB says:

And its har to say both are dissapointments … after all, green was a 7th round pick. If we go that route then so is irving (kinda goes without saying), muhamed and beal as well … which would make for more than 4 picks lol. TRB

  7. 1nOnlyTRB says:

They were comparing Tebows motion in game to brady’s and complementing him. maybe he doesn’t do it consistently enough … or amybe we just wanna blame the throwing motion. TRB

I really thought the way we were runnign the ball we would shatter the NFL rushign record (whatever it is) … 167 yards in the first quarter alone. impressive.

  9. buck484 says:

I have to agree with Bay, I didn’t see anything in the defensive game that tells me we are a great team. Carter was beaten like an old drum all afternoon. The tackling was terrible, again, and the play calling was horrible. Offensively we did some good things, but not near enough. I believe this team has heart but, is that going to win us games now. More aggresive on the D and take better care of the ball on O. Just my opinion. Go Broncos

  10. collies10 says:

    very negative today folks!!

We have youngest offensive line. 3 rookies on pass defence. Basically used our 3rd and 4th string running backs whole game. 3rd and 2nd year wide receivers starting (1 just back from long injury). A starting QB who had had no off season reps in only his 2nd year. A new head coach and defensive coach. Playing a future hall of fame QB and coach. Yet we had to turnover ball 3 times to ensure they win. Pats record when winning turnover battle with brady is 101-4. Now we lost that battle 3-0 there lies the game.

We are on the road. Cannot see us going deep in playoffs. But at start of season never thought I would be thinking of playoffs. Alot of you too harsh on this team. No we are not championship material I already knew that. But we will be sooner than I thought.

    Go Broncos !!!

  11. killerkod says:

collies…………can you blame us for being negative? That was a horribly played game.

I just call it as I see it. They play great, they get praise. They play mediocre, they get called on that. If they stink up the joint, especially as they did on D yesterday, then they deserve to get called on that as well.

There wasn’t much to be positive about after yesterday’s debaucle……except for the first quarter…….but the rest of the game made me completely forget about that. lol

  12. collies10 says:

Killer I know where you are coming from. But at start of season we all knew this was a rebuilding year. Now if we win last 2 games we finish 10-6. None too shabby with all the young talent on the team. Go away to draft get new RB and some corner help and a defensive lineman. We hit on those and I reckon we will become contenders.

This team has made great strides we shouldnt hide from that.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

Collies, I guess it balances things out with the ones who say we are a SB bound team, but agree with pretty much everything you say. We seem to be on the right track with a long ways to go, like Elway said before this season it would be a four to five year process to return to the top, and then the Tebowmania took over and some folks thought we were there already, games like these are just to remind us we’re not. No big deal.

And they deserve to take some of the heat today, it was a poorly coached team and I hope Fox is big enough to fess up to it, that would be the best thing he could do, the players did not have the play calling all sides of the ball that could make tghem successful, regardless of the turnovers, they adapted all wrong to those, giving up on the running game way to early and not pressuring Brady soon enough and ST execution, let’s not even go there….

No negativity here, just a good look in the morror this morning, and hopefully everyone in the organization can do just that.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

Sorry, posted before ready, them, too early, mirror,

  15. killerkod says:

For sure……….I mean we’ve out-played our talent level for a while now. We’ve got some decent pieces here already and we need to draft wisely to keep putting the puzzle together. And I feel that the D side of the ball needs the most immediate attention.

And don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t be happier with how the season has turned out so far………a potential play-off spot was def unforeseen.

But I just like to take it game by game and evaluate it game by game……..and yesterday’s performance was just UGLY!

  16. killerkod says:

I think if you ask the other bloggers……..I try and keep an even keel and a balanced outlook on this teams performance week to week. But after a loss like that it’s hard to tame the anger! lol

  17. baylinorcrush says:

I bet collies10 wouldn’t be taking it that easy on his favorite rugby and soccer teams in Ireland, LOL.

  18. S.D.Bronco30 says:

Can they run just tackling drills this whole week. that would be a big help.

  19. collies10 says:

Don’t get me wrong Bay and killer it does hurt. Really enjoying 1st quarter beer flowing nicely then BOOM!!! Felt the same way in the redskins, 49er superbowls. All that optimism just squashed.

But how good will it feel christmas eve with a beer in one hand and a playoff spot in the other. Now thats all I want for christmas a buffalo pie.

  20. killerkod says:

    LOL @ SD

I think that’s one of the weakest parts of our game…….But I think that’s a league wide problem………lots of defenders going for the strip or the big play and forget about the fundamentals of tackling.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

I think we have the worse point differential of any team in the second quarter which is exactly why that would remind us of the Redskins SB, they had the greatest second quarter in SB ever if I remember right. Good recollection collie.

  22. killerkod says:

But in our case, it seems we just plain wiff on guys left, right, and center……..specially in the open field.

  23. collies10 says:

Lol at Bay. Do not like soccer Bay. Also Ireland not very highly ranked in rugby world being such a small country. So I have got used to us not winning often in the rugby. Denver is my number 1 team. In fact it is becoming an obsession that might lead too divorce lol. But I can say I have been supporting them since late 1980s when nfl came to tv over here.

  24. strandoftds says:

Poor defense, 3 fumbles in N.E. territory leads to game over at half time. You make mistakes like that against a great QB like Tom Brady, there`s no way to recover. Give the Pats alot of credit but at the same time we beat ourselves by many multiple, mastakes. Without the turnovers it would have been a dog fight. Our defensive tackling was horrendous. I`m still proud of our team to get this far into the season, the Broncos have already exceeded my expectations for this year.

  25. strandoftds says:

If it snows in Bufallo on saturday we could be in for a low scoring game. Alot of running the ball in Bufallo I`d imagine. Without McGahee we`d be hurting I think.

  26. strandoftds says:

I wouldn`t be surprised if the Broncos go after two CB`s in Aprils draft. We are hurting in the secondary bad and Goody is as good as gone after the season. We need a reliable CB opposite of Champ for next year. We do need a Reliable Safety too.

  27. killerkod says:

I think Ball and Johnson can carry the load running the ball. That’s not to say we won’t miss McGahee tho.

  28. 1nOnlyTRB says:

D was pretty bad … not that getting scored on by brady is embarassing or anything … happens alot. Just the way it did. Wide open TEs completely uncovered, missed tackles on the TEs … I mean the TEs were evading Tackles like Rbs it was ridiculous. The D was always running around all hectic micro seconds before the snap. Twas pretty bad. Lotta missed assignments and and poor coaching and play calling. Either way … not the end of the world … re group and go get em. TRB

  29. strandoftds says:

If I were Fox, I`d sit McGahee this saturday, he needs to heal and rest.

  30. strandoftds says:

    The season isn`t over yet.

  31. brian_schneider says:

The results of what we all saw yesterday was purely because of our own doing. You give any team a short field, extra possessions due to turnovers, poor tackling, first downs on penalties they’ll make you pay. Give all those things to a HOF QB Brady and he’ll make you look foolish..as he did.

We gotta get our heads together for the remaining 2 games and lose the mental lapses.

  32. killerkod says:

I think we need to put Royal back returning kicks……….seems like that’s his only major asset at this point……..and lord knows we need someone back there to make better decisions with the ball………and who can make a difference.

  33. seweatherman1 says:

killer, do you mean somebody that can catch the ball?

  34. killerkod says:

yah, and someone who doesn’t think he’s a super hero and HAS to take it out of the endzone every time. Or how about not even attempting to catch the ball when it’s wise to just let it go! haha

  35. killerkod says:

starting on the 20 is alot better than the 5, 10, or 15. lol

  36. Broncfalls says:

Hello All…..Happy not victory Monday! LOL!

I think I’m gonna take everything you all said and tuck it away in a little zip lock baggie and put it up in the closet! Good stuff, just don’t want to admit to it! LOL! just teasing…..well sort of :)

I’m trying to read as much as I can to avoid over posting…but I’m still trying to figure out why we had to go and get “cute” with the running! Running game doing well with straight ahead running…bring the read option later when you have to….

Bay, I think you posted earlier about out coached….i agree sir! play calling got complicated when as a fan, I didn’t feel it had to….heck, run on 1st and 2nd down pass on third if you have to so you can move the chains….anyhoo!

It’s been a great season to be a part of BUT……we’re still in this fight! pull the pants up and go back to work!

Also, again..I”m trying to read all your post and will continue to do so but what happens if we go 1-1 and Oakland and San Diego win out…records are tied and I know we own the tie breaker with Oakland but San Diego???

I’m out to do some research….

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  37. baylinorcrush says:

I think we need to throw the ball to someone other than just DMT, it’s unbelievable that after all these years coach Fox he still doing the same thing as when he only threw it to Steve Smith, give me a break, all the grandmas in the stands even know who Tebow will throw it to anymore, that’s just terribly conservative play calling, and we have guys like Decker and my boy Willis spinning their thumbs….

  38. strandoftds says:

Cosby made many mistakes on KO`s, very poor judgments, even coming out of the endzone with the ball. He`s trying to be a hero. And the worst decision he made was not letting the ball go into the endzone with 3 seconds left but fumbling, and allowing a extra FG. Very bad decisions by one player alone.

  39. brian_schneider says:

I think that goes to show the lack of creativity that McCoy shows in his play calling and philosophy. Willis and Decker have shown they can play and have a lot of talent, as the offensive coordinator your goal is to call plays and design plays to utilize that talent. McCoy and Fox aren’t doing that right now.

  40. baylinorcrush says:

If SD wins out they would win the division if we lose to KC and beat Buffalo, we would win it if we beat KC and lost to Buffalo.

  41. strandoftds says:

How about the ST`s tackle by Matthew Willis on the KO, man what a hit!

  42. baylinorcrush says:

Poor Mathew, one ball thrown his way in meaningless time, what a sorry sight for me, my boy Willis ignored once again by the Fox/McCoy tandem.

  43. killerkod says:

luckily for us, SD will be in tough with Det at Det next week……..and I think the Chiefs D will give the Raiders a run for their money.

  44. Broncfalls says:

    Thanks for the clarity bay!

    GO GET EM’ BOYS!

  45. seweatherman1 says:

The KC defense gave Rogers fits all day yesterday.

  46. baylinorcrush says:

It might very well all come down to having to beat Orton, how funky is all that??? Orton would love nothing better than to ruin Tebow’s party, haha.

  47. 1nOnlyTRB says:

At first I thought DMT was just getting alot of looks cuz Decker was covered y alot of players … and thats is true in some cases … especially against the Vikes (they locked in on Decker) but since then it feels like we have just said .. Bay Bay all the way … like we forgot what Decker was made of. Guy pretty much carried the team from the receiver position all year. And if willis is to get involved, which is fine, Royal should be a returner all the way especially since Vaughn is hurt. Ill use bays campaign and say Quan must go. Kudos to trying to help but its one thing to field it and game nothing/next to nothing, its another to fumble and turn it over before even taking a step. Quan Must Go!

  48. shaztah says:

I think Coach Fox was trying to compliment Tebow (SORT OF) (I THINK)???

“He’s gotten better every week,” Fox said. “Six or seven weeks ago people said that he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn, but I think he does that. I think he can do that. I don’t think that’s why we lost the game tonight.”

  49. baylinorcrush says:

Quan, take a quantum leap out of here, LOL.

  50. Crush Arizona says:

We were out coached all the way around offense was doing great than Mcgahee came up injured and the balls started popping out everywhere can’t win when you keep turning over the rock deep in your own turf. Did this team even practice last week? wow!!
