Broncos vs. Panthers: Third Quarter Notes

December 14th, 2008 - 12:42pm by Kyle Sonneman

15:00: The Panthers will get the ball to start the second half kick. Back deep is Mark Jones to receive Matt Prater’s kick. Jones gets back to the 20, before he is hit hard by Mario Haggan.

14:50: DeAngelo Williams starts the Panthers out with a 10-yard run picking up a first down.

13:54: Jake Delhomme looks for Steve Smith on a screen but Dre’ Bly has him covered, but Delhomme throws it up and Smith grabs it before being rocked by Josh Barrett. Nontheless, first down. And on the very next play, Williams blows through the line and into the open field. 56-yards later, he is in the endzone. Kasey is good and the Panthers are now up by 17.

Panthers 27 – Broncos 10; 12:49 remaining.

12:49: Royal takes it a yard deep, gets to about the 19 and slips and is touched down. The Broncos will look to answer from there.

12:44: Jay Cutler’s first down pass is nearly intercepted by Charles Godfrey. He was looking for Tony Scheffler but he couldn’t make the connection. Tatum Bell gets two on second down and it is third-and-eight. Cutler finds Brandon Marshall, who looks to make a move, but is cut down before getting the first down. Brett Kern is on the field. Kern gets ahold of one and drive Jones back to his 16. He takes to the 33 and is brought down. 57-yard punt for Kern.

11:02: Carolina’s Jonathan Stewart takes the first-down carry, leaves his feet and is drilled for a loss of three by Jamie Winborn. On second down, Jake Delhomme fakes a handoff, drops back and launches a pass downfield for Steve Smith, who is double-covered by Dre’ Bly and Josh Barrett, and the pass falls incomplete.

On third down, Delhomme takes the snap in shotgun and tries to find second-year receiver Dwayne Jarrett, but the ball falls through his hands and the Broncos stop the Panthers for a three-and-out.

Royal is back deep to receive the Jason Baker punt. He calls for a fair catch and the Broncos will take over at the 29.

10:02: A short completion to Bell and two incompletions and it is fourth down. Kern is back out to kick to Jones. Another good kick by Kern and the Panthers will take over at the 31-yard line.

9:05: Three yards for Jonathan Stewart on first down and then the Panthers pick up the first down as Delhomme hits Muhammad for 24 yards. First down at the Denver 42.

7:46: The two connect again for another first down and 13 yards… The two looked to connect again, but the ball is tipped and Josh Barrett comes down with it. Barrett’s first career interception and the Broncos have the ball at the 43 of Carolina.

6:13: P.J. Pope on first down gets nine and the Broncos have crossed midfield.

5:24: Pope picks up the first down on the next play.

A loss by Bell and a five-yard false start penalty and the Broncos are going the wrong directions. Second-and 16, Cutler hits a diving Royal for 12 yards. Cutler has Pope to his right on third down, he drops and fires to Marshall for the first down.

2:56: Cutler has a lot of time on first down, but here comes the Panthers rush and they got him. Loss of six, Thomas Davis got Cutler on that one.

Cutler hits Royal for 10 on second down bringing up third down. Bell this time is on Cutler’s right, he has Scheffler but he can’t hang on. Prater will come out to attempt the 47-yard attempt. No good, wide right. Carolina takes over. It was close, but it just didn’t come back for Prater.

1:25: Two short carries by Stewart and the Panthers have a third-and-four. Flag before the ball is snapped, false start on Smith. It will be third-and-nine now. Doesn’t look like the Panthers will get the play off before the quarter comes to and end. And they let the time run out.

See you in the fourth.

Having determined they can throw on us all they want, Carolina will now rack up unbelievable rushing yardage and run out the clock.

  5. West Coast says:

Why did we split up our linbacker corp? Seriously, DJ and Nate are back in the lineup? Freakin genius? Bench them and play the kids.

Wow, some of you really don’t understand the meaning of “its not over till its over” do ya???? We’ve come back from behind to win many games… its not easy for me either to still have all my faith in this team right now but I do. Stop giving up so easily and quickly… just because the players seem to be doing that doesn’t mean you should either.

I don’t know where our D decided to go but their heads are certainly not in this game. Get aggressive boys… our team needs to understand the meaning of “we need to WIN this game”.

    With all my faith…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

The best thing about Marshall can be the worst some times. He should have just put his head down there and he probably would have had the first down.

  17. chataraya says:

Great job from Winborn and Barrett.

  18. 07elway says:

There… we got an INT. Now are all you giver-uppers happy. Wait, wait I can answer that for ya… you giver-uppers won’t be happy till we are the most perfect team in the world, which let me stop you there – that ain’t gonna happen. We will never be perfect but I will say they could play better than they have today and I’ve seen them play better.

Bottom line – stop demanding perfection out of this team when you know that’s not possible, because NO one is perfect. okie dokie??

    With all my strong faith…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

does anybody have a live feed?

  21. broncos1592 says:

its still nice to see a pick..but one pick doesn’t mean we will win

no team is perfect, i will never expect that out of this team or any. I just think we wont be able to come back from this deficit

  22. killa b's 24-32 says:

you’d think it would be time that the coaches realize that matt prater is not fit to be an NFL kicker, when you go 4/10 on your last 10 FGs, and have such a horrible percentage from 41-49 yards, you don’t deserve to be on an NFL team. this should be one of many key ofseason changes coming up.

  23. West Coast says:

    I second that. Prater sucks.

Guess we’re gonna find out what kind of 4th quarter comeback QB Cutler is. Should be fascinating… they’ve got to figure out they really need to start playing as a team and NOW would be the perfect time to figure that out.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

  26. broncosfromaway says:

who said we don’t miss Elam?

  27. broncos20 says:

yea,,it is tough,,,a performance like that 4th Qrt comeback in in Cleveland would be amazing.. I just love it when Clady threw Peppers to the ground in the second quarter..aha..

    Go Broncos.
