Broncos vs. Packers Series History

September 30th, 2011 - 11:50am by Stuart Zaas

This Sunday, the Broncos will travel to Green Bay for just the sixth time in franchise history. It will be the club’s fourth appearance at Lambeau Field – the team played two road games against Green Bay at Milwaukee County Stadium (1971, ’87) before their first trip to Lambeau in 1993. Only four teams (Cleveland, New England, Houston and Jacksonville) have played fewer games at Lambeau Field.

The two teams have met 11 times in the regular season, with each club winning five times and tying once. Broncos fans will have no problem remembering the lone postseason matchup between Denver and Green Bay, in which the Broncos earned a 31-24 victory in Super Bowl XXXII.

The last time the two teams tangled was on Oct. 29, 2007 when the Packers beat the Broncos 19-13 in overtime.

Denver got off to a strong start in the series, winning or tying five of the first six games. The road team has only won once in the series – The Broncos are 5-1-0 against the Packers at home, while Green Bay has compiled a 4-0-1 home record.

Notable performances against the Packers:

  • John Elway threw a career-high 59 pass attempts the first time Denver visited Lambeau Field. He finished that game 33-of-59 for 367 yards. The 33 completions marked the second-most in his career.
  • Cornerback Champ Bailey broke up three passes by Brett Favre the last time the two teams met (G.B. at Den., 10/29/07).
  • Safety Brian Dawkins has played nine career games vs. Green Bay and has totaled 48 tackles, three interceptions, two forced fumble, one fumble recovery and eight pass breakups.
  • Wide Receiver Quan Cosby returned five punts for 114 yards (22.8 avg.), including his career-long of 60 yards in his only career matchup vs. the Packers (Cin. At G.B., 9/20/09).
  • Defensive End Jason Hunter, who began his career with Green Bay, recovered an Aaron Rodgers fumble in a Thanksgiving Day game while playing for the Lions (G.B. at Det., 11/26/09).
  • Denver-Green Bay Roster Connections
Some interesting roster connections between the Broncos and Packers courtesy of research done by Public Relations Intern Cydney Ricker:

  • Packers Defensive Coordinator Dom Capers has coached Broncos CB André Goodman and Jonathan Wilhite with Miami and New England, respectively.
  • Packers K Mason Crosby (2003-06) and LB Brad Jones (2004-08) played at the University of Colorado.
  • Green Bay LB A.J. Hawk is married to Denver QB Brady Quinn’s sister, Laura.

Only 3 games ever played by the Broncos at Lambeau field, that’s amazing!

    2. armadillo_orton says:

      Thanks WOODY PAIGE!!!

Highlights from his Orton stinks take:

“From the seventh game of 2009 until the game at Tennessee on Sunday, with Orton as the starting quarterback, the Broncos trailed by three or more points at halftime 17 times.

      They lost all 17.”

Tebow in his second start set a team record for a 17 point 2nd half comeback win against Houston. He passed for 308, which tied him for the rookie season high w/Bradford. Bradford had 16 starts.. Tebow tied Bradford in only his 2nd start.
There is no reason for anyone to justify Orton starting. Please end this madness now EFX!! Elway please realize that FOX has no qb assessment skills.. Let’s review, He drafted Claussen and Tony Pike last season. They both stunk…. He rolled with Jake Delhomme for FAR TOO LONG.. Called VINNY T & BRIAN ST. PIERRE for starts. (THEY were both at home on their lazy boy’s..where they both belonged). Fox has stated publically that he thought Steve Young wasn’t going to be a good player.. Trusting FOX with making any QB decisions is like having a blind person pick your future wife…. Just remember I was the first person to call him out…

    3. brian_schneider says:

We can’t start Tebow because of the money..plain and simple. I wish it weren’t the case but when you sift throuh all the PR BS, it boils down to the money.

    4. killerkod says:

Hey Gang! Back from a business trip and now back to business here!

Seems as though it’s been the same talk all week……..all about Orton and his stinkdom……..unfortunatley that’s part of his game that will be the same all season.

I know this is a few blogs back, but since I missed it, I have to give my props to Rod Smith. I know if his body would let him, he’d still be hauling in passes today. The man was a beast on the field………..and when you needed that big play, or 3rd down conversion, he could always be counted on. I truly hope he makes in into the HOF!

I’m surprised that so many are actually picking our team to win…….too much orange kool-aid I think. I’m still sipping on mine, which is making this a difficult one to predict. Will have it to you tomorrow bay………I need another night to contimplate. LOL

Scary stuff about Rodgers and his ability to defend the rush………and even scarier for our secondary which will prob get lit up like a Christmas tree on Sunday. Let’s hope that Von Doom are the fastest duo he’s seen to date.

All that being said……….I do think the team can be competitive in this game………..IF we get the running game going. I think an effective screen pass could make all the difference.

    5. stevecan2 says:

      Money and Fox.

    6. broncsbomber66 says:

Can you all share the KOOL-AID please, mine’s running out! While you’re at it, spike it with some rum!

    7. stevecan2 says:

I don’t think you can blame Clausen on Fox though. No one knew he would end up that bad. I sure didn’t. Not to say I endorsed him, but still, considering.

    8. stevecan2 says:

Out of the 2010 QB draft, Colt McCoy is who I had pegged as the best coming out. I thought, in Denver McCoy would have been the best best pick. But, we do not have him and we instead have the unconventional task of finding a way to implement Tebow into a system. It can and should be done, but looking back, implementing McCoy would have been an instant credibility raiser which is obviously goal #1.

    9. stevecan2 says:

Urggh, okay other than Bradford. duh

    10. killerkod says:

      McD will ruin Bradford’s career……….lol

    11. alexanserg says:

McD has always made QBs look good. Bradford will probably look good, but Stephen Jackson is gonna start looking a lot less effective, I bet.

    12. DenverOranges says:

Oh yeah!!!! I just got my tickets in the mail today for the Bronco game VS the Chargers I’m stoked. Can’t wait to tailgate it the heck up and show those mountain folk how us Kansas boys do BBQ.

    13. stevecan2 says:

Unfortunately, as much respect as I have for Jackson, McD and his injuries are about to end his effectiveness. He will slowly fade into obscurity. Which is a damn shame, always loved his north south running ability.

    14. stevecan2 says:

      that’s awesome DO.

I would love to watch the Broncos in Denver. But honestly, not the Chargers, which in SD is where I watch em play every year (lol).

    15. stevecan2 says:

Of course there was that one time in KC. Dante Hall’s KR for a TD. I was screaming from the nose bleed section, ” block to the back, block to the back.” did not good obviously.

    16. DenverOranges says:

this will be my 2nd time watching Denver play the Chargers in Denver it’s one of the most heated games I have ever been to. Never been to a raider game just dont feel like getting shot in the bathroom!!

    17. baylinorcrush says:

Let’s just remember that when we went on a search for a new HC it became quite evident that very few capable coaches were interested in the job, it’s a matter of fact many chose to flat turn down even just the interview. And to anyone following our team that spoke volume of where we were truly at and how the NFL community viewed us. Coming off a disastrous two years where a young coach succeeded in only one thing, stripping us of most our major talent resulting in a 4-12 record from our team rating at the bottom of the league in most D categories and couldn’t run the ball either, add that to the fact that Elway was named VP of football operations with no such experience, the fact that Mr Bowlen is trying to make this comeback under a tight budget, and there you go, way too many hurdles to cross for most of the capable HC type material out there to want the job and they simply bailed out figuring this was such a difficult task it would rather most likely hurt their career than help it. And here comes Fox, off an even worse season than us and he is a player person, a guy who doesn’t make bonehead moves and he has no other offer on his plate, so he comes to Denver and Mr Bowlen falls for the let’s take no risk with an inexperienced young HC this time around and and Fox it is, more of a circumstancial HC pick due to our situation than chosing being able to chose the best one, there was very little to chose from, just saying. Gregg Williams is who I wanted all along and he wouldn’t even take the interview…

So here we are making the best of a real bad situation. I always like what TRB says when he thinks that a couple years down the road Allen might become the HC and I say then bring in Rick Dennison as OC to revive our zone blocking scheme running game.

But that’s getting way ahead of myself, all this just to tell armadillo to chill, I don’t believe Fox is the long term plan for the Broncos, just who they felt was the best bridge to the next step in this quagmire we found ourselves in, it’s not just a QQ, it’s of much bigger proportion than that, thanks to McD, that’s where everything that followed originated from.

    18. DenverOranges says:

this will be my 2nd time watching Denver play the Chargers in Denver it’s one of the most heated games I have ever been to. Never been to a raider game just dont feel like getting shot in the bathroom!

    19. DenverOranges says:

not sure why that posted twice

    20. baylinorcrush says:

Forgot to mention that to hamper the HC search even further, Xanders had no credibility as a GM in the eyes of the NFL community.

    21. henryac says:

I never really quite figured out why they didn’t take a shot with Studsville. He gave them a number of advantages like knowing the organization, the players, etc, plus he gave them built-in plausible deny-ability if it all blew up in their faces. Young coach, no HC experience, so forth. He seemed to be doing pretty well at the end of the year so I couldn’t really figure out the move then and I don’t much understand it now. At least he had them playing with some heart. With all the personnel damage done, did they really, honestly believe that Denver could contend with the few players left after the purge? I also noticed that the Jeff Fishers and the Bill Cowhers of the NFL world were not exactly knocking the doors off the hinges trying to get here! This whole effort is starting to look like a band-aide fix on major surgery and that doesn’t look like a good idea at all.

    22. rayjr26 says:

@ DO… ive seen broncos play the chargers too many times! Ive also seen the broncos play the raiders a couple times, but i almost got kicked out after flipping the bird to a heckling raiders fan after we won in the last second of the game! priceless. :) Im still waiting to see a broncos chiefs game. they are the only AFC west rival i havent seen us against. oh and the icing on the cake? My first broncos game ever was the broncos vs oilers…. can you say “The Drive II” lol

@ bay… i dont think Fox was the only person willing, i just think that he brought to the table many of the things we were looking for as a franchise! Good defensive mind, and experience with rebuilding a franchise! As for his experience in Carolina, especially the last couple years, lets not forget that he was playing for an owner who DID not want to pay top money for their home grown talent. Fox drafted quite a few solid players there but the owner was not interested/unwilling to pay to keep them once their rookie contracts were up. Kind of hard to stay competetive when your boss keeps shipping all your talent out! LOL Im not going to call Fox a bust just because his first season here may be horrible, even if i dont agree with his QB choice. I will save my judgements for his second season. Remember it was his second season that he really turned Carolina around! Also, i too have wondered if perhaps D. Allen is being groomed to be our next HC. Only time will tell. also, having Rick Dennison back as OC, or even HC with Allen staying as DC wouldnt be a bad deal in a few more years either!
      Go Broncos!!

    23. armadillo_orton says:

My posts are just me shouting in the wilderness. I’m just hoping that someone from management may actually be reviewing our posts.. I’m over ORTON.. I am at my breaking point… I can’t not handle another start…… It’s driving me insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Life is far too short than to sit here and watch this pathetic QB play… I may take up handball like another old friend of ours.

    24. baylinorcrush says:

Capable persons willing was my point, Studs was maybe as capable as any of the other ones who cared to apply and actually showed up for their interview…. I bet no one can remember who else applied and showed up for interviews unless they go back in the archives and look, that should tell you the extent of talent we had applying….

Perry Fewell, DC of the Giants was the only one who raised my attention, he was one of my choices along with Greg Williams. But other than that, Mularkey turned it down, so did Williams, Gruden and Cowher were not interested, that job simply did not produce the applicants the organization had hoped for, that is a certainty.

    25. baylinorcrush says:

Anyway, a little update on the Bronco fans pulse:

15 have us beat the Packers

32 have us lose to them, or more than twice as many.

    26. rayjr26 says:

      i remember dennison did! lol

    27. CrushNation says:

      Bay,

I have to agree with you as far as Fox being a temp stop gap.
The other thing people need to realize is this is not a rebuilding year.
They are still tearing down what McD left behind. That is not just the players but also the BoneHeaded contracts he signed. Causing the QQ.

    28. Orange_Crusher says:

Rivera, another guy who wasn’t even interested in an interview seems to have the Panthers back on the right track after their last coach ran them into the ground… hmmm

    29. HardHitting27 says:

Been to a KC Denver game……. in KC. Early 90s.
I was proudly wearing my Broncos gear and sitting amongst the Chiefs faithful.

I was a real popular guy for 3 and 1/2 quarters while the Chiefs were winning. Took it all in stride, the ribbing, comments etc.

Late in the game we were down by 10 and #7 got the ball…….
80 yards later, we were down by 3.

      Popularity declining……..

Broncos get the ball back. #7 leads the charge….. get less friendly in th sea of red. With each 1st down and yard moved the got less and less friendly……..
Outcome, Broncos win by 4 and I was no longer welcome in the “red” section with about 1 minute left.

      PRICELESS!!!

    30. baylinorcrush says:

About Dennison I bet you he was the front runner for Elway but the inexperience factor after the McD debacle killed it.

    31. baylinorcrush says:

      HardHitting, you tease!

    32. baylinorcrush says:

Good point about Rivera and we all know Fox wouldn’t have drafted Newton, maybe that’s why he got canned in the first place?

    33. HardHitting27 says:

I’ve been dared to go to Oakland and try that trick. Sit amongst the Raiders faithful and wear my Broncos stuff.

With Orton at the helm, I’d probably do it because they’d just laugh me out of the stadium. If we actually had the rivalry going the way it used to be……… NO WAY would I be insane enough to try it.

And worse still, my Grandfather-in-law, is a Raiders Fan…..

    34. broncsbomber66 says:

Who were you guys rooting for when Shanny got fired?

    35. The Dane says:

      Prediction:

      Packers: 27

      Broncos: 16

    36. baylinorcrush says:

D minded coach, that was a gimme for everybody, except for Mr Bowlen, haha.

    37. HardHitting27 says:

I’m with Bay, D minded coach as well, when they let Shanny go.

Although, I’d liked to have seen “Chucky” or “Chin” (Gruden or Cowher) patrolling the sidelines here. and the best chance of that was after Shanny was let go, but they never pursued either.

      It’s always about money……

    38. baylinorcrush says:

      A couple new blogs guys.

    39. zhaoyunfan says:

when shanny was let go was rooting for spagnulo who is now with the rams lol not sure how much better that would have been

    40. yerkool says:

      Prediction:
Tebow gets traded with San Francisco 49′r and ends up the starting QB and gets a superbowl ring as the 49′r QB,then the three amigos in denver known as EFX will run for their lifes Lol!

    41. BeastFromEast92 says:

Not everybody bro,me and TRB wanted Dennison, and still do!!!

    42. BeastFromEast92 says:

We kicked their butts in the SB…..who cares if they say they let us score, they couldn’t score against our Defense in the end!!!!!!!
