Broncos vs. Packers: Second Quarter Notes

August 22nd, 2008 - 7:45pm by Adam Zinser

15:00: The Broncos defense forced a punt, and the Packers were able to down the punt inside the one-yard line. Cutler and co. will come out to start their drive from deep in their own territory.

14:32: The Broncos face a third-and-eight from their own two-yard line. Cutler fakes a handoff and then hits Peyton Hillis, who breaks out of a tackle and trucks his way for 15 yards. First down Denver.

12:30: Andre Hall bursts up the middle for 18 yards and another first down. Selvin Young comes in to give him a breather.

11:25: Facing a third-and-short, Young powers up the middle for some tough yardage, getting the first down and moving out close to midfield.

9:20: The Broncos continue down the field, and on a first-and-10, Cutler fires at Royal. Al Harris had great coverage, blanketing him and batting down the ball. It was close, but no penalty called. The crowd booed, however.

9:17: Cutler came out firing on the next play, hitting Nate Jackson for 11 yards and a first down. He followed it up with another pass to Hall for 17 yards and yet another first down. The Broncos move into the redzone.

7:36: After a five-yard pass to Hall, play has stopped as there is an injured Packer on the field. #36 Nick Collins is the downed Green Bay player. He has rolled over onto his back and is being attended to.

7:36: Play has resumed, with Collins walking off the field, and the Broncos have a second-and-five from the Packer 12-yard line. Hall takes the ball inside the 10, close to a first down.

6:43: Facing a third-and-two, Michael Pittman carries for the first time and gets the first down after a measurement.

6:10: On a first-and-goal from the seven-yard line, Cutler fires to Nate Jackson for a touchdown. Prater’s extra point is good. 10-7, Broncos on top. That touchdown capped off a 16-play, 99-yard drive that took 8:29 off the clock.

6:10: Make it back-to-back-to-back touchbacks for Prater. This last one went out the back of the endzone. Rodgers comes back out onto the field at QB for the Packers.

6:03: Rodgers throws deep for Donald Driver, but it was over his head. But the refs call pass interference on D.J. Williams — it’s a 26-yard penalty.

5:29: Brandon Jackson gets the Packers deeper into Denver territory with an 18-yard run around the right side.

3:59: After a false start, the Packers face a third-and-11 from the Denver, ball on the 37. Rodgers completes the pass to Jermichael Finley, but he is stopped short of the first down.

3:20: Rodgers gets the first down on a QB sneak, picking up two yards.

2:00: We have come to the 2-minute warning, and the Packers face a second-and-five from the Denver 20.

2:00: Injury update: Elvis Dumervil going into the locker room for an x-ray on his finger. His return is questionable.

2:00: It’s funny to watch how players try to listen in when the refs get together to talk about a foul. They just fended off several Packers as they discussed a penalty — false start on Green Bay.

1:48: Rodgers complete to Morency for a loss of two as Jamie Winborn and Kenny Peterson combine on the tackle. Denver calls a timeout. Mason Crosby comes out for the Packers and boots a 44-yard field goal through the uprights. Broncos and Packers, tied at 10.

1:41: Royal fields the kickoff a few yards deep in the endzone and kneels down for a touchback.

1:35: Cutler fires deep down the left sideline for Marshall, but Tramon Williams interferes with Marshall. The penalty results in a 31-yard gain.

1:32: Cutler again fires deep down the left sideline for Marshall. He bobbles the ball from the 10 to the three, but manages to maintain concentration and haul it in for a 49-yard touchdown. 17-10, Broncos. That was the longest pass of the preseason for the Broncos.

1:32: That technically was a one play, 80-yard drive, courtesy of the pass interference penalty against the Packers. And again, Prater kicks the ball to the back of the endzone for yet another touchback.

1:25: Rodgers hits Driver, deep down the middle, for a quick 23-yard gain as they work their two-minute offense.

0:47: With a first-down and the ball at the Denver 45-yard line, the Packers call a timeout as they work their two-minute offense. After the timeout, Rodgers complete to Morency for a nine-yard gain.

0:26: Green Bay hurries back to the line of scrimmage, and Rodgers completes his pass to Donald Lee, who hurdles Domonique Foxworth before being taken down by Winborn and Manuel, but not before he got the first down.

0:11: The Packers call their final time out, and they come out to run a play with a first down from the Denver 28. Rodgers fires to the corner of the endzone for Jennings, but it sails over his head.

0:05: Crosby comes out for a 46-yard field goal, and it’s good. That brings the first half to an end, Broncos lead the Packers, 17-13.
