Broncos vs. Packers: Fourth Quarter Notes

August 22nd, 2008 - 9:21pm by Adam Zinser

15:00: With a fourth-and-goal from just a few inches out, the Broncos will go for it. Head Coach Mike Shanahan and Cutler both talked with Patrick Ramsey before the teams retook the field for the opening play of the fourth quarter.

15:00: Ramsey attempted to hit Clifford Russell in the back of the endzone but couldn’t make the connection as the ball passed in and out of Russell’s hands. Turnover-on-downs, and the Packers have the ball at their own one.

13:45: The Packers failed to get a first down, and with a fourth-and-three from their own eight, Jon Ryan comes in to punt the ball away. Martinez bobbled the punt, but managed to pick it up and return it 11 yards to the Packer 46-yard line.

13:30: Ramsey fires deep down the right sideline for Colbert, who made a nice adjustment to get to the ball, but he was hit hard by Jarrett Bush and couldn’t hold on.

12:43: Ramsey connects with Russell on third down for a gain of eight, giving the Broncos a first down at the Green Bay 34-yard line.

10:51: Peyton Hillis gets his first carry of the game on a third-and-one, and he gets the yard necessary for the first down.

9:09: On a third-and-five, Ramsey connects with Russell again, getting 10 yards and a first down. Ramsey follows that up with a nine-yard connection to Pittman for a touchdown! 24-20 Broncos.

8:27: Pat Lee and Jordy Nelson are back deep for the Packers following the Denver TD. This one is returnable, however, and Nelson takes it out to the 23-yard line before being forced out of bounds by Sapp.

8:27: Matt Flynn, the rookie out of LSU, is in at quarterback for Green Bay.

7:01: On third-down, Flynn throws a quick out to Chris Francies who is met immediately by Foxworth, who stops him for no gain. Jon Ryan booms a punt 79 yards for a touchback, bringing the Bronco offense back out onto the field.

5:21: Ramsey is hit as he throws, and the ball pops up in the air, getting picked off by Tracy White. The Packer offense comes back onto the field with a first-and-goal from the Denver 10.

4:45: Lumpkin carries up the middle and is taken down at the one, losing control of the ball. It bounces into the endzone, but none of it matters as the refs rule him down by contact.

4:00: Lumpkin attempts to dive over the line into the endzone but can’t make it, giving the Packers a fourth-and-goal at the one yard line.

3:19: Lumpkin gets in this time, running around the left end and juking past Karl Paymah for the touchdown. 27-24 Packers.

3:19: Larry Birdine was shaken up on the ensuing kickoff, but he got up and walked off after a few minutes, and Darrell Hackney is in at QB.

2:31: The Broncos thought they had a first down as Hackney fired down the middle to Martinez, but an illegal motion penalty negated the play. Now third-and-10 from the 30.

2:19: Hackney launches one deep down the right sideline to Keary Colbert, who can’t make the grab. The Broncos get set to go for it on fourth-and-10 but then call a timeout.

2:13: Hackney is flushed out of the pocket and scrambles right, but can’t find an open receiver. He is taken down as he throws, and the ball goes out of bounds. Turnover-on-downs, Green Bay ball at the Denver 30.

2:00: After one rush by Lumpkin, Matt Flynn takes a knee. It looks as if they will just run out the clock. Final score: 27-24, Packers over the Broncos.

Why is Ramsey still in there?

  2. navy_bronco_fan says:

Yeah, I don’t understand why Hackney isn’t getting some reps tonight. They left Ramsey in for several drives last week too! When’s Hacks shot?

  3. navy_bronco_fan says:

Well, Ramsey tossed a TD to Pittman, but it was ever so close to being picked.

  4. West Coast says:

Maybe we allready have our minds made up on the 2nd string QB. I would like to see what Hackney can do.

  5. broncolover88 says:

i found a better website than justin.tv it is called stoogetv.com

  6. rev79 says:

Has Ramsey ever played in a game and NOT thrown a pick????

  7. navy_bronco_fan says:

Okay, hopefully Hackney can run a two-minute drill.

  8. jazzyfrizzle says:

Stoogetv.com is using the justin.tv broadcast. same thing.

  9. West Coast says:

    Please cut Ramsey and Paymah

  10. jazzyfrizzle says:

    and clifford russell

  11. West Coast says:

    And Colbert?

  12. broncolover88 says:

    yeah pretty much jazzyfizzle

  13. jazzyfrizzle says:

    we need a quality backup

  14. navy_bronco_fan says:

    Well……….
-1st team offense started slow, but got it going and looked okay (B-)
-1st team defense started REAL slow, but overall I would give a C+

    Ramsey, Niko, Bly, Paymah……….not impressed

  15. West Coast says:

navy_bronco_fan ……You are seriously dead on. Niko is not impressive. The other 2
(-bly) are not even back up material. We still have 2 weeks to improve

  16. jazzyfrizzle says:

webster outplayed him today in my opinion

  17. navy_bronco_fan says:

I really was rootin’ for Niko when the Broncos got him, but now after watching him pretty close it just doesn’t seem like he can get off blocks quick enough. He spends too much time wrestling with the first blocker and then he’s too late to make a play. Anyone who has played MLB will tell ya that you have to get off the initial block immediately (or not let him even get to you) and flow towards the football. I think Webster solidified his starting job tonight.

  18. navy_bronco_fan says:

As far as Bly is concerned………I just don’t think he’s living up to expectations. You almost never hear his name called UNLESS he blows a play. I know it’s tough when you play across from Champ, but another way to look at it is that you have a bunch of chances to make plays ’cause the other team is gonna stay away from Champ for the most part. To me, Bly just hasn’t been making the plays I expect from him. He’s still a good corner, he just came to Denver a little overrated IMO.

Overall, I’m still looking forward to the Broncos having a MUCH better season than last year! Just need to shore up some loose ends and keep improving. Also, I’ve got to tell you guys a little story. I live in South Texas and tonight I went into a convenience store to get some coldies for the game and I noticed this vehicle pull up to the front of the store and two people just sat in it for a long time. Eventually, I got my stuff and headed out of the store. Once I got into my truck to drive off, the two people FINALLY got out of their vehicle………….they were both wearing Dallas Cowgirls jerseys! I think they saw that I was wearing a Broncos jersey and just waited until I left ’cause they were embarrased! Made my day! GO BRONCOS!

  20. jazzyfrizzle says:

Very Nice story. I was at an electrical training class today, and every friday my previous professor comes in and says whats up. But not today… Silly dallas fans! Also, a fellow electrician i work with is a faiders fan and he was saying how we were gonna lose in game one. My reply was:”10 bucks?”. his was, not yet, I have to watch a few more preseason games. Gotta love it. cant even spare ten bucks!

As an Italian Broncos fan, I say when in Rome, bash on Ramsey like all the other Broncos fans do! In all seriousness, why doesn’t Hackney get more reps? I’m sure Patrick Ramsey is a nice person, but if Cutler gets hurt and he’s the second option, I’m worried. Hackney, on the other hand, always seems to make nice things happen. Otherwise, I’m pleased with the offense’s performance these past few weeks and I look forward to our game against the Raiders on September 8. Go Broncos! Oh yes, and much thanks to Jamie Winborn for answering my question online!

  22. gasperdn says:

I really wish that we could have shut Kregg Lumpkin up after I saw him mock the Mile High Salute… Oh well we probably won’t be playing in the NFL for to long.

  23. Broncomania56 says:

To all Bronco Fans. It pains me to say this, but I will anyway. Since we are all giving our opinions only. I’m afraid that the defensive line is not much improved from last year. Our best pass rusher is Elvis Dumerville. Without adequate pressure on opposing QB’s it’s gonna be hard for our DB’s & LB’s to contain the pass. I’m afraid there will be too much inconsistency from our defense. All that being said, I am very please with the way the offense looks. Started a little slow tonight, however turned it on quickly. Jay is making excellent decisions. The offensive line is allowing him to feel more secure in the pocket. I am curious though, how they will respond without Marshall for the first two weeks. If Royal continues to play the way he has then we will be fine. Week Three I feel sorry for that defense. We have 2 deep threats at receiver with the addition of Royal. We have added some young talent and all are showing to be very good picks for us. Hopefully our defense will improve, but without the pass rush, it could be that we will see some shoot outs this season. I feel our offense is poised to have an excellent productive season. God forbid Cutler go down, with Ramsey at the helm we are screwed. He holds the ball way to long, makes late decisions and hasn’t impressed me yet. Every game he’s played he’s thrown an interception. Hackney, with more reps could prove to be a better back-up than Ramsey. Anyway, looking forward to Bronco Football in 2008 and hopefully into 2009 and a Superbowl appearance too. Later Bronco Fans, look forward to Blogin this season.

Attn Bronco bloggers….Nate Webster did not have any better game than Niko! He missed 3 tackles that wound up giving up addional 30 yds rushing, receiving. Niko was playing with 2/3rd team defense, so he’s working with a lot less talent around him. All in all, I’d call it a wash. Neither played well. It’s disturbing, in fact, as much as the D-line has been. We better hope we could pick up a couple of players after the 1st cut. Now with Doom/Manuel undergoing surgery, this kinda sucks!!!

Fun games to watch, hard to stomach the results, even in preseason.

    HOGblog……
    why is doom getting surgery

  26. oldsouthstander says:

1st team Offense: Disjointed first time they had the ball but were picture perfect the other two times. I was real surprised that Shanny didn’t have them play the first series in the scond half.
    B+ Minimum
1st team Defense: What’s a “pass rush”? The Broncos D line sure doesn’t know. Somebody, please, teach Bly how to tackle. AAARRGGGHHHH!!!
    D+ at beest.
Ramsey: Of all the passes he threw he looked off his receibver only once! He needs to be cut! I don’t know that Hackney would be any better, but at least give him a shot against the Cardinals.
Kick off Coverage: When Prater doesn’t boom it through the end zone the poverage and tackling arwe pathetic! There’s only one time this whole preseason that when hasn’t boom3ed that the other team didn’t get past the 30. That was last night when BG returned it to the 23. See, improving!! No!! Two different Broncos had shots at the BG returned at or near the 15. WHIFFFF!!!!
    Grade: D-
Kick off return: All but one were also through the end zone, so had to say. The one that was retuened never even showed a glimmer of hope that it would be broken for a big return.
    Grade : C
Punting: Kerns gross average was 48 yards. Looks good on paper. Net punting yardage, 30.5 yards! This is an absolute disaster in the making. Neither punter seems to be able to grasp the concept of not out kicking the coverage. Coverage is atrocious!
    Grade: F-
Offense Short yardage (3 yards of less on 3rd, 4th or goal to go): Broncos offenmse had done an exceptional job in the first two games. Today only 5 out of 8. Not an area the Broncos can afford to regress in. Grade C-
Defense short yardage: Packers were 8 of 13. Broncos also regressed here.
    Grade: D+
Penalties: On the surface good as there were only 5. But, all but one of then was at a critical momentum changing time!
The Broncos are a very talented, very young team. As with any team during this time, their play was and will continue to be erratic until they get sufficient playing time together. While they have the potential to make the playoffs, they also have the potential to have an even worse record than last year. I’m not saying that they’re not a significantly better team than last year, I’m saying they will both delight and totally dissapoint us this year. They will be back in 2009 with fire in their eyes and the experience to get the Broncos back to the level of excellence we’ve become so used to.
PLEASE, PLEASE KEEP CULTER HEALTHY ALL 16 GAMES!!!!

Dumerville dislocated/fractured a finger. He and Manuel had surgery today. Im sure they’ll be in oversized casts, and will likely play against Oakland.

  28. orange crush 92 says:

O thanks i never heard about that

  29. bones1965 says:

This team reminds me of Shananhan first team that was 8-8. They were really good offensivelly but real bad defensively. This Defensive Line is sooooo Badddddddddd………. Jarvis Moss is a bust. He is slow and weak and Crowder is limited. Start Kenny Peterson at end so they can stop the run. I know this is crazy but move DJ back to middle and Start Woodyard he makes plays. Start Barrett and McCree @ Safety and Cut Bly. Start Foxy or Paymah and have Darrent Williams I mean Jack Williams as a back up. Cut Sapp and Start Hillis with Larsen as backup. Cut Jackson @ WR and sign Ashley Lelie after he is cut. I feel Like Woody Paige right now.

Average team but lots of hope with young team. I think we have had two good drafts withe the Cutler Draft Class and this one. By the way WHY DID THEY CUT DOMINICK HIXON…………………………………………………

    Go BRONCOS!

  30. Marshall 1...T.O. 0! says:

Bones it may sound easy to cut every one on the team but we still need to pay off their contracts so cutting half of the starters wont make any sense. I agree that changes need to be made but to get rid of players and then Lelie is a player that showed his talent 4 years ago, but its 2008 now and he has lost the little skill he had.

  31. gasperdn says:

Also Lelie showed how much he wasn’t willing to earn a starting position when he cried about the Javon Walker trade.

  32. #80fan says:

I remember everybody hating on Hixon as a returner last year. Everyone was glad that he got cut because he was not being aggressive and hitting the hole on returns. Hixon was cut because he was not performing for the Broncos. I guess he got a wake up call when he was released. The Broncos can’t be blamed for cutting him.

  33. lynch4prez says:

whoa whoa guys whats with all the hate.. we lost a PRE SEASON game by three due to a fluke interception..
#1 Bly and Jackson will never in a million years be cut, too mcuh bonus money that would result in a cap penalty if they were cut
#2 its pre season, a time to work out the kinks.. everyone whos hatin on anyone, sit back and take a deep breath, its pre season

  34. CurtOU says:

Seriously guys, Im just a big of a fan as anyone, but this preseason stuff just doesnt bother me. No reason to get all worked up. The only gripe I have is that I could play QB against the Broncos. I would just take the snap, stand there, look around, and find someone open. The QB never gets touched, its amazing. Get a pass rush, somehow, please.

  35. GO CUTLER says:

i think we need a middle linebacker that can make tacklesoure middle linebackers cannot do this very often we need a playmaker in the middle give winborn a try. offense looks impressive. go broncos.
