Broncos vs. Lions Series History

October 27th, 2011 - 9:44am by Stuart Zaas

On Sunday, the Broncos and Lions will meet for the 10th time, with the Broncos holding a 6-4 record, including a 3-1 advantage at home. The Broncos haven’t lost a home game to the Lions since the first time the teams met, which was nearly 40 years ago. Detroit topped Denver 24-20 at Mile High Stadium on Nov. 7, 1971.

Since then, the Broncos have won each of the three times Detroit has come to town, with the last win coming by a 20-16 margin on Sept. 28, 2003.

The last time the teams met, the Lions got the better end of the Broncos in Ford Field by a score of 44-7 on Nov. 4, 2007.

Notable performances against the Lions:

  • CB Champ Bailey: Intercepted two passes in one game against the Lions while a member of the Washington Redskins (9/10/00). He also picked off a pass in a playoff game versus the Lions on Jan. 8, 2000.
  • S Brian Dawkins: Has recorded a sack in two of the three games he has played against the Lions, and has posted a 3-0 record in those contests.
  • DT Brodrick Bunkley: Registered a pair of sacks against the Lions on Sept. 27, 2007.
  • RB Willis McGahee: Scored twice while rushing 12 times for 76 yards (6.3 avg.) against the Lions on Dec. 13, 2009.
  • Denver-Detroit Roster Connections
Some interesting roster connections between the Broncos and Lions courtesy of research done by Public Relations Intern Cydney Ricker:

  • Denver RB Knowshon Moreno and Detroit QB Matthew Stafford were top signees in Georgia’s 2006 recruiting class, played in the same backfield for three years (2006-09) and were both drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft.
  • Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas and Lions WR Calvin Johnson played one season together at Georgia Tech.
  • Denver Quarterbacks Coach Adam Gase held three different positions with the Lions: quarterbacks coach (2007), offensive quality control coach (2006) and offensive assistant (2005).
  • Denver Linebackers Coach Richard Smith was Detroit’s assistant head coach and led the linebackers there for two seasons (2003-04).

Sounds like a house of horrors the last time we played the Lions! Maybe it is their turn to take a beating!

That was on THEIR turf…. Much Different story this time.

      Denver 24 – Detroit 22

The Lions are going to be in our yard, are we going to crack the whip and tame ‘em or are we going to stick our heads in their mouth and let them bite down???

    5. HUMCALC says:

      That’s 40 years, not 30 years

    6. royalbroncofan1 says:

Tony Scheffler suffered a concussion a few weeks ago.
Pettigrew, I believe is the bigger concern. Our Safety’s will be up for the challenge.

With Javid Best out, Lions are relying on Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams to carry the load for the 27th ranked rushing attack.
Let’s see if we can make them one dimensional.

It’s going to be a great day for football in Colorado!!

      Broncos – 23
      Lions – 20

      GO BRONCOS!!!!!

    7. shaztah says:

I am just curious how many of you who picked us to win would have done the same with Orton as our starter?

    8. shaztah says:

      Denver 24
      Lions 17

    9. daddybronc says:

    11. tnalen66 says:

well its been two years since we won back to back games which is really sad.It hard to believe Detroit will lose 3 straight so LIONS 22 BRONCOS 15

    12. 1nOnlyTRB says:

      I believe my prediction was

      Broncos 23
      Lions 19

Correct me if im wrong but if u never got it that’s it. Cuz I think I embedded my prediction in a long post and could easily have been missed.

    13. baylinorcrush says:

I saw it, and it was 23-19.

    14. Broncfalls says:

      royalbroncofan1,

I agree with you a ton my friend! One dimensional! I HOPE! and hope some more that a “nasty” defensive mind shows up with Allen and the boys! Play with that “attitude”..you know what I mean! I wanna see Ayers just kill it! Miller getting into the backfield! Just bring it! rentless nastiness!

Offensively, it’s going to be interesting to see if this “timing” thing get ironed all as everyone including Tim are talking about! Moreno? I still will hold true to what I think will be a very good outing for him! I’m not saying he’s a long term answer here in Denver, I just think there can be something said for competition within the roster! He got benched and I’m optimistic that for at least the next coming weeks, this could play into a positive experience! We’ll see!

      GO GET EM’ BOYS!

    15. Jwscout says:

Sorry posted this on the wrong blog..

TRB- That link you posted was a great analysis and break down of the passing game of TT. He has a lot to improve on, so we will wait and see…. With that said, It seems this week we will have to lean more on the passing game. Hopefully Moreno will prove his worth.

We will see this week and next how well our O-line is progressing along with our D. should be exciting!

      I’m believing in our Team!
      Denver 24
      Lions 21

I hear you Broncfalls!! Let’s see if we can get the Defense going !!

    17. dwilco77 says:

We could win if we play like we did in the last 4 minutes of the game against Miami. Calling draw plays without the option of a slant with 8 guys on the defensive line blitzing, Tebow draws on 3rd and eight, Running play after running play against a team blitzing 8 out of 10 plays, 30 yard pass calls on 3rd and 9 when you know your going to get blitzed as was done against Miami is not going to make it. The Offensive play calling has to change, or the season is doomed. The game plan never changed through the first 3 1/2 quarters of the Miami game despite the fact it was not working. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results. GET CREATIVE. Get Tebow throwing the ball on short hook and slant passes, to slow down the rush on the Quaterback, and then we can get the opportunity to watch Tebow let a few passes go long.
