October 27th, 2011 - 9:44am by Stuart Zaas
On Sunday, the Broncos and Lions will meet for the 10th time, with the Broncos holding a 6-4 record, including a 3-1 advantage at home. The Broncos haven’t lost a home game to the Lions since the first time the teams met, which was nearly 40 years ago. Detroit topped Denver 24-20 at Mile High Stadium on Nov. 7, 1971.
Since then, the Broncos have won each of the three times Detroit has come to town, with the last win coming by a 20-16 margin on Sept. 28, 2003.
The last time the teams met, the Lions got the better end of the Broncos in Ford Field by a score of 44-7 on Nov. 4, 2007.
Notable performances against the Lions:
CB Champ Bailey: Intercepted two passes in one game against the Lions while a member of the Washington Redskins (9/10/00). He also picked off a pass in a playoff game versus the Lions on Jan. 8, 2000.
S Brian Dawkins: Has recorded a sack in two of the three games he has played against the Lions, and has posted a 3-0 record in those contests.
DT Brodrick Bunkley: Registered a pair of sacks against the Lions on Sept. 27, 2007.
RB Willis McGahee: Scored twice while rushing 12 times for 76 yards (6.3 avg.) against the Lions on Dec. 13, 2009.
Denver-Detroit Roster Connections
Denver RB Knowshon Moreno and Detroit QB Matthew Stafford were top signees in Georgia’s 2006 recruiting class, played in the same backfield for three years (2006-09) and were both drafted in the first round of the 2009 NFL draft.
Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas and Lions WR Calvin Johnson played one season together at Georgia Tech.
Denver Quarterbacks Coach Adam Gase held three different positions with the Lions: quarterbacks coach (2007), offensive quality control coach (2006) and offensive assistant (2005).
Denver Linebackers Coach Richard Smith was Detroit’s assistant head coach and led the linebackers there for two seasons (2003-04).
