Broncos vs. Lions Pregame Blog

August 21st, 2010 - 5:21pm by Gray Caldwell

The doors at INVESCO Field at Mile High have officially opened for the 2010 campaign. The Broncos are on the field warming up for their preseason home opener against the Detroit Lions, and a few players came out early to work with Strength and Conditioning Coach Rich Tuten.

First, Ryan Clady headed to the field to stretch with Tuten. Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas soon followed, running routes and catching passes from the coach. Tim Tebow found the field early to run with Tuten, as well.

Gabe Hiatt is on the field snapping some pregame photos, so we’ll have those to you in a little while. The team will be sporting its orange jerseys for the contest.

6:03 p.m. MDT: Several players have made their way onto the field donning orange jerseys. Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn are tossing passes to a handful of receivers, while returners are fielding kickoffs from Matt Prater and punts from Britton Colquitt.

Speaking of fielding punts from Colquitt, one kick was headed directly toward Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, so the signal caller simply stepped under the ball and fielded it.

6:13 p.m. MDT: The team is gathered in a huddle near the tunnel, jumping up and down as they get hyped before heading to the end zone for stretches. Not surprisingly, Brian Dawkins led the charge from the huddle to the end zone, and the safety is currently head-butting any teammate who comes his way. Both teams are on the field, warming up in opposing end zones.

6:33 p.m. MDT: The Lions have left the field as the Broncos are lining up offense against defense and walking through plays. Kyle Orton just fired a pass deep down the field to Jabar Gaffney. Now the Broncos are leaving the field as Thunder is galloping onto it.

Brandon Stokley, Tim Tebow, Champ Bailey, LenDale White, Knowshon Moreno, Correll Buckhalter, Darcel McBath, Spencer Larsen, D.J. Williams, Chris Kuper, Ryan Clady, Richard Quinn, Demaryius Thomas, Daniel Graham, Elvis Dumervil and Darrell Reid are not expected to play in tonight’s contest.

Perrish Cox will start in Bailey’s place, and Wesley Woodyard will take over for Williams at inside linebacker.

6:51 p.m. MDT: Broncos Stampede marching band is now performing on the field. The National Anthem should follow shortly. See you in the First Half Live Blog.

great to hear Clady is at least stretching on the field, hopefully a good sign.

No wonder Tebow ran into two defenders for that TD, he looks like a Fullback!!! Big all around, massive neck and pretty well endowed too, a little too much maybe… What are they feeding that guy? Triple portions, haha.

Well guys I am going to go ahead and give my overview of how I think the game went!!

Our Receivers- Great talent here, made great catches all around, Gaffney got open a lot and made some AMAZING catches, Willis did really good and used his speed to get open and also made some good catches, and I definitely have to point out that my boy Deck had a great night! He made some tough catches in traffic and broke several tackles and did good at getting some yac…I am soo stoked to see him play more…I also think Thomas will do great starting off. It looked like Deck just got open again and again and was definitely Quinn’s favorite target!! I hope Deck and Thomas can both push to first string…they both have the potential to!!

Special Teams- Definitely much improved. Our punts and punt coverage was good and I LOVED seeing Cox stepping up and refusing to go down and getting that 65 yard punt return. Also made good tackles. Syd’quan made a great special teams tackle as well along with some other guys!

Quarterbacks- Orton, it really seems like no one can stop him, once he starts completing the deep ball more then he will be completely unstoppable. I love it because him and Tebow looked exactly the same in their 1:00 minute TD drives. Tebow wouldn’t be denied last week against Cinci and Orton wouldn’t be refused tonight!! He has improved soo much and I am glad we signed him to another year. Quinn, looked just as bad as last game, I figured he would’ve stepped it up but he lacked reading the defense again, put a few balls in the ground, took forever to get the ball out, couldn’t avoid the sack even though hes been known to get out of the pocket and avoid sacks, bad accuracy! Also fumbled at the end of the game to lose the game for us! We had it won if not for that! If Tebow isin’t starting by next weeks preseason game, I will be very worried!!

Defense- wasn’t on the same page all night. Had good plays and then bad plays! Goody gave up that TD to Calvin but dang, he’s 5 10 and Calvin is 6 5 so that really doesn’t surprise me. Goody even jumped as high as he can and didn’t come close to hitting the ball, he gave it his all! Cox had to of done better tonight because I never saw the ball being thrown his way much so I am very happy with him tonight! Our defense didn’t know how to stop the short RB throws and TE throws. We had them beat about all game in the deep stuff and they just dumped it off short and we couldn’t stop it. I’m not all that worried because we still had A LOT of players out tonight! Moss had a great sack fumble and did great even with a cast on. That will stoke him up for the regular season even though we still need better pass rush. My boy Ayers also got himself a sack tonight but we still could have gotten more! Couldn’t stop the runs by the QB but that was mostly from our second and third stringers!

Offense- did great passing but still bad running. Opened up the running game against the 3rd string D so that didn’t surprise me much! Ball gave up a pick and smacked the ball in the air and Orton was picked which shouldn’t have happened!! We still need to get the ball to Royal more! He only had one catch tonight and I think one last game but a TD last game!! Also, Branson is proving out to be who I thought he was going to be even though he looks a little slow at times but has great hands…made up for that TD drop from last game from Tebow with getting a TD tonight from Orton! Wished Tebow could have played. I really hope McD bumps him up to second string so he can get a lot of playing time against the Steelers next week!

Kicking Team- Prater missed that one but looked good the rest of the game!! Colquitt looked great the whole game. Had a 60 yd punt! Prater should’ve still made that 45 yd FG. Don’t know what happened there!!

Our backups did better than last game but still need to improve on their wrapping up! First team did good with it but other guys need to improve. Mays missed a huge tackle and he is a hard hitter. Saw flashes of good and bad from him. Phonsie also had his good and bad plays! How do you get offsides on kickoff return though! He cost us that kick going out of bounds at the end of the game and we would’ve had it I think at the 45 even though Quinn would’ve choked probably anyways so it really doesn’t matter.

Hopefully a lot of guys will be on the field next week against Steelers like Buck, Williams, Bailey, Tebow, Thomas, Moreno, and White!

Also I have to point out that stood out the most tonight…WE HAD NOOOO INJURIES BABY!!! At least I don’t think we did, I never saw any…haha, the first string was playing and Deck came out with them and then I never saw him after that and was worried but McD put him out for the whole game with the backups and he did great!!

We also had tooo many penalties which wasn’t good, especially holding penalties!!

Lets pray for another injury free game next week…I could care less about the scares just don’t want any injuries and want to see our first stringers look great and they have been soo far!!

I love me some Broncos Country!!!

  32. Caotico09 says:

Orton will have a 4000+ passing year. Mark it.

  33. Caotico09 says:

As for penalties- it is to be expected. Our O-line is new and needed the practice against a better D-Line. As time goes on the holding and Illegal-Formation penalties will decrease. I was very impressed at Orton’s confidence in the pocket and ability to move and get the pass out. Man who knew he could scramble like that!

  34. baylinorcrush says:

It seems as the two game blogs are completely messed up, impossible to get in and post, they have a totally different look to them and a gray screen keeps appearing saying blog going out, 1, 2 then it goes out and eraces what ever you wrote before you can post, it must be the same for most since OC was “testing” this am and somehow oldsouthstander is the only one who managed to post something after that on the second half blog, no idea how he did it. Please guys let me know if you are having trouble too, thanks

  35. baylinorcrush says:

Actually the gray screen says closing live blog 5,4,3,2,1 and off your comment goes.
