Broncos vs. Jets: First Quarter Notes

November 30th, 2008 - 1:12pm by Kyle Sonneman

15:00: Matt Prater lines the kickoff team up as J-E-T-S JETS, JETS, JETS rings across the stadium. The dangerous Leon Washington is back deep. Prater’s kick bounces into the endzone for a touchback.

The Broncos defensive starters are:
DE Elvis Dumervil
DT Marcus Thomas
DT Dewayne Robertson
DE Ebenezer Ekuban
WLB Wesley Woodyard
MLB Spencer Larsen
SLB Jamie Winborn
CB Josh Bell
CB Dre’ Bly
SS Marquand Manuel
FS Vernon Fox

Brett Favre gives to Thomas Jones for a short gain on first down.

14:12: After a second down incompletion, Favre has time but can’t connect with rookie Dustin Keller. Fourth down. and Royal is back deep. He waves off the coverage and the ball rolls to a stop at the Broncos 32.

The Broncos offensive starters are:
QB Jay Cutler
RB Peyton Hillis
WR Brandon Marshall
WR Eddie Royal
TE Daniel Graham
WR Brandon Stokley
RT Ryan Harris
RG Chris Kuper
C Casey Wiegmann
LG Ben Hamilton
LT Ryan Clady

13:52: After a first down completion to Royal, Peyton Hillis rumbles for a 19-yard gain to the Jets 45 and a first down.

12:38: Broncos are facing a third-and-four, Cutler in the gun fires incomplete to Brandon Marshall. Fourth down and on comes the Broncos punt team.

Brett Kern lofts one into the sky where Washington is waiting. The Broncos corral him for a short gain. First-and-10 for the Jets at their 14.

11:46: On first down, Favre gives to Jones but he goes nowhere. Stopped by Marquand Manuel and friends… After a completion to Jerricho Cotchery, the Jets face fourth-and-three. Kenny Peterson gets across quickly and flags are on the field.

The referees are talking about this one. After much debate, the flag is on Peterson. Automatic first down for the Jets.

10:19: On second down, Favre finds Jones on a screen pass and he has blockers and room. Broncos pursue nicely, but Jones gets the first down.

8:50: Ok not real sure what happend on that one. But the end result is Vernon Fox in the endzone for the touchdown. Looks like Cotchery was down however.

So the Jets lined up in the “wildcat” with former college QB Brad Smith getting the snap. He pitches to Cotchery who muffed it, fell on it but Fox comes up with it.

According to referee Walt Coleman, that play is not reviewable and the touchdown stands. Prater adds the point after and the Broncos jump out first.

Broncos 7 – Jets 0, 8:41 remaining in the first quarter.

8:41: No surprise, the Jets fans are not too happy about that one.

Prater kicks to Washington at the 10, after looking like he was pinned in, Washington finds space to the Jets 41-yard line. First down Jets.

8:32: Well that lead didn’t last, on the first play Jones runs right through the defense to open field and a 59-yard touchdown. Point after is good and we are tied.

Broncos 7 – Jets 7, 8:21 remaining.

8:21: Royal is back deep for the Jay Feely kick. Royal takes it at the 10, puts his head down and moves the ball to the 28-yard line. First down Broncos.

Cutler leads them out of the huddle on first down. Quick pass to Tony Scheffler for nine yards and then Hillis gets enough to move the chains.

7:01: Eric Barton makes a nice play on a pass to Daniel Graham down the middle. But Cutler answers and answers by finding Royal for the touchdown. Great job by Royal watching the ball in, keeping his feet in-bounds for six. But wait, the Jets are challenging. They say he stepped out.

Looks to me that he was able to stay off the white and in the green. We will see what Walt Coleman says. If it stands, the pass covers 59-yards (sound familiar?).

Coleman says he was in, touchdown Broncos. Prater is good, and just like that the Broncos are back up.

Broncos 14 – Jets 7, 6:44 remaining in the first quarter.

6:44: Well so much for the weather slowing down the scoring. Three touchdowns in less than two minutes. Prater is ready to kick as the rain comes down harder than it has most of the day. Washington takes the ball at the nine, and is taken down around the 25-yard line.

6:38: Flags are down on first down. Coleman says the Jets held and will now face first-and-20… On first down, Jones gets minimal yardage. A Bronco is still down however, looks like Josh Shaw.

Shaw comes to his feet and it looks like he is grabbing his ribs. A cart comes out to take him to the locker room.

6:14: After an incompletion, the Jets face third-and-long… Favre in the gun, gives the ball to Washington but the Broncos take him down quickly. Fourth down and Royal is back deep to receiver Brett Ratliff’s punt. Royal waved off his teammates but it hit one of them. Broncos recover.

INJURY UPDATE: Josh Shaw suffered a sprained elbow and is out.

5:14: Huge first down run for Hillis puts the Broncos at the Jets 40-yard line. 19-yards on that carry for Hillis.

4:37: After receptions by Scheffler and Marshall, the Broncos have another first down inside the Jets 30.

3:52: Chad Jackson makes his first grab as a Bronco and makes the most of it. He takes the toss inside the Jets 10. First-and-goal.

3:14: A holding call on Ryan Harris will push the Broncos 10-yards back. Still first-and-goal at the 16.

Cutler gives to Hillis who moves his way to the 12.

2:09: Third-and-goal from the seven… Cutler in the gun with Hillis to his right. He doesn’t like what he sees and calls a timeout.

1:55: Now Hillis is to Cutler’s left. He rifles a pass in the endzone to Marshall, but the Jets knock it out. The cagey verteran Ty Law knocked it away.

Prater on for the 25-yard field goal. Prater hits it, and the Broncos add to their lead.

Broncos 17 – Jets 7, 1:44 remaining.

1:55: Prater kicks to Washington… great play by Josh Barrett to trip up the dangerous return man. Jets at their 24-yard line.

1:40: Favre lasers one to Keller on second down for a Jets first down. 14-yards on that play to the young tight end.

0:19: On the final play of the first quarter, the defense stops Jones for a two-yard loss. Jets will face a second-and-12 from their 39-yard line.

See you in the second quarter.

So glad to see our Royal-highness back in action. With him, Hillis and Marshall alone – we should be unstoppable. As long as we hold on to the ball and NO turnovers, we can win this thing. Definitely won’t be easy though considering the team we’re playing but also the weather conditions – but the weather should be no excuse at all.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!
