Broncos vs. Giants: First Half Live Blog

Q1 – 9:45: Matt Prater’s kickoff sails deep into the end zone and the Giants will start their first offensive series at the Denver 20-yard line. Starting on defense for the Broncos: Vonnie Holliday, Ronald Fields, Ryan McBean, Mario Haggan, D.J. Williams, Andra Davis, Elvis Dumervil, Andre’ Goodman, Champ Bailey, Renaldo Hill and Brian Dawkins.

Q1 – 14:28: After Eli Manning found Hakeem Nicks for a six-yard completion on first down, the Giants elect to use their first timeout of the game.

Q1 – 13:17: Brandon Jacobs is brought down for a two-yard loss by Andra Davis on second down, but Manning finds Steve Smith cutting across the middle on third down for a gaini of eight, giving New York a first down at the Denver 32.

Q1 – 12:20: Jacobs looks for a hole going through the right tackle on first down but picks up only three yards as Brian Dawkins meets him inside the hole. On second down, an interception goes through the hands of Andre’ Goodman, bringing up 3rd and 7.

Q1 – 11:37: On third down, Manning fires to Domenik Hixon out of the shotgun. The play comes up two yards short of the first down and Jeff Feagles is on to punt on fourth down.

Q1 – 11:36: After a 48-yard punt by Feagles, the Broncos will begin their first offensive series at their own 14. Starting for the Broncos: Kyle Orton, Knowshon Moreno, Brandon Marshall, Jabar Gaffney, Tony Scheffler, Daniel Graham, Ryan Clady, Russ Hochstein, Casey Wiegmann, Chris Kuper and Tyler Polumbus.

Q1 – 11:05: After Orton is sacked for a loss of 10 on first down, he completes an 11-yard pass to Moreno on second down to bring up 3rd and 9.

Q1 – 10:14: Orton completes a five-yard pass up the middle to to Buckhalter, bringing up 4th and four. Mitch Berger comes onto the field on fourth down and boots a 57-yard punt.

Q1 – 9:47: Manning and the Giants begin their second offensive series at the Denver 37-yard line following a 14-yard punt return by Hixon.

Q1 – 9:33: Jacobs gains two yards on first down before being brought down by Davis and Kenny Peterson. On second down, Manning throws short of Mario Manningham, bringing up 3rd and 8.

Q1 – 8:47: With time to throw in the pocket, Manning fires downfield to Manningham. All over the play, Champ Bailey breaks up the catch attempt and the Giants are forced to punt.

Q1 – 8:46: Following a 45-yard punt by Feagles, which lands out of bounds, the Broncos will begin their second offensive series at their own 16.

Q1 – 7:55: Orton hands off to Buckhalter on first down, and he shifts to the left for a gain of two. On second down, Orton fires deep for Jabar Gaffney down the left sideline. The two connect for a 28-yard pass-and-catch play to the Denver 46.

Q1 – 7:00: Back-to-back runs by Buckhalter of five and seven yards move the chains again for the Broncos, who are now at the New York 42-yard line.

Q1 – 5:42: Looking to his left, Orton finds Tony Scheffler open in the flat, connecting with the tight end for a gain of 13. On the very next play, Knowshon Moreno finds a hole rushing to his left. Moreno gained five yards on the play, but if he wasn’t tripped up on the play he likely could have gained much more.

Q1 – 5:33: Moreno rushes for on second down for 14 yards, but Daniel Graham is called for holding on the play and the Broncos face a 2nd and 15 at the New York 34.

Q1 – 4:30: Graham makes up for the penalty in a big way, catching a screen pass from Orton and rumbling down the right sideline for a gain of 17. The Broncos have a first down at the New York 17-yard line.

Q1 – 3:14: A four-yard run by Buckhalter followed by a six-yard carry by Moreno gives Denver a 1st and Goal opportunity at the New York 7.

Q1 – 3:00: Orton fires for Marshall on 1st and Goal but the pass is deflected by New York linebacker Michael Boley. Moreno loses one yard on second down, bringing up 3rd and Goal from the 8.

Q1 – 2:30: Operatiang out of shotgun on 3rd and Goal, Orton overthrows Marshall, who was well covered on the play. Prater connects on a 26-yard field goal attempt, giving the Broncos an early three-point advantage.

BRONCOS 3, GIANTS 0

Q1 – 2:28: Prater boots the kickoff out of the end zone, resulting in a touchback. After the play, Darrell Reid is called for a personal foul, and New York will start with the ball at the Denver 35.

Q1 – 2:20: On first down, Manning’s pass is complete to Johnson for three yards, but Brian Dawkins forces a fumble on the play. The fumbles bounces out of bounds at the New York 27, and the Giants retain possession.

Q1 – 1:18: After Manning connects with Jacobs for a seven-yard screen pass on first down, he can’t connect with Manningham on third and short and New York is forced to punt it away.

Q1 – 0:53: Feagles 48-yard punt is returned by Eddie Royal for 11 yards and the Broncos start the offensive drive at their own 29-yard line. On first down, Orton fires deep to Marshall, just overthrowing his targeted receiver. A personal foul on Corey Webster occures after the play, giving Denver a first down at their own 44.

Q1 – 0:20: Following the penalty, Moreno picks up one yard on first down. On second down, Orton goes play-action and finds Scheffler for a 10-yard gain. The Broncos are now at the New York 45-yard line. The first quarter has come to a close.

Q2 – 14:54: On the first play of the second quarter, Orton can’t connect with Gaffney. Moreno, however, rushes for 11-yards on second down to move the chains.

Q2 – 13:37: Moreno gets the carry on the very next play, rushing up the middle for five yards. On second down, Buckhalter is brought down for no gain, bringing up 3rd and 5 from the New York 29.

Q2 – 13:02: On 3rd and 5, Orton’s pass is tipped at the line of scrimmage. The Broncos are going for it on fourth down.

Q2 – 12:04: Out of shotgun on fourth down, Orton finds Scheffler streaking across the middle to pick up the first down. Scheffler bursted to his left, gaining 22 yards before being brought down at the 7-yard line.

Q2 – 12:03: Corey Webster was injured following Scheffler’s catch-and-run play. After an injury timeout, Graham was called for a false start, backing up Denver five yards.

Q2 – 12:02: After Ryan Clady was called for a false start on the very next play, the Broncos have 1st and Goal from the New York 18.

Q2 – 11:54: Buckhalter can’t hold on to a screen pass on first down, but Orton connects with Marshall for a gain of nine on second down, bringing up 3rd and Goal at the 9.

Q2 – 11:00: Before the third-down attempt, Casey Wiegmann was called for a false start. Orton can’t get on the same page as Scheffler on third down and Prater is on to attempt another field goal.

Q2 – 10:50: Prater connects ona 32-yard field goal attempt, giving the Broncos a six-point lead.

BRONCOS 6, GIANTS 0

Q2 – 10:46: Prater continues to launch his kickoff attempts. This one goes eight-yards deep into the end zone and the Giants will start with the ball at their own 20-yard line.

Q2 – 9:40: Manning hands off to Danny Ware on first down, and Ware gains three yards on the play. On second down, Manning elects to hand off to Ware again — who picks up two more yards, brining up 3rd and 5.

Q2 – 9:20: On 3rd and 5, D.J. Williams jumps offsides, giving New York a first down at its own 30-yard line.

Q2 – 9:17: Ware rushes for eight yards on the next play, but Haggan strips the runner before he hits the ground. Brian Dawkins recovers the ball and the Denver offense has possession at the New York 38-yard line.

Q2 – 9:00: After taking over possession, the Broncos waste little time going for the big play. Orton looks deep down the right sideline for Marshall, who rises up to make a spectacular one-handed grab at the New York 10-yard line. The play results in a 28-yard gain.

Q2 – 8:00: After a one-yard run by Moreno, Orton looks the running backs way on second down, resulting in an eight-yard reception for the rookie tailback. On 3rd and Goal, Moreno patiently waits for his blockers and shifts his way to the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown.

BRONCOS 13, GIANTS 0

Q2 – 7:10: Hixon takes Prater’s kickoff from the goal line. He is brought down by Darcel McBath, and New York starts with the ball at its own 20-yard line.

Q2 – 7:00: Williams sacks Manning for a loss of nine on first down and Manning throws incomplete to Jacobs on second down, bringing up 3rd and 18 from the New York 11-yard line.

Q2 – 6:10: On third and long, Andre’ Goodman comes blitzing in, nearly sacking Manning for a safety. Manning avoids the sack but throws incomplete to Nicks, forcing a New York punt.

Q2 – 5:10: A 15-yard punt return by Royal sets the Broncos up near midfield. After a two-yard run by Buckhalter on first down, Orton connects with Gaffney for a gain of eight. Following the play, Webster is called for a face mask penalty and the ball is now at the New York 26-yard line.

Q2 – 4:20: Buckhalter loses three yards on first down and Orton throws out of bounds on second down on a pass intended for Scheffler, bringing up 3rd and 13 from the New York 29.

Q2 – 4:10: Orton throws a screen pass to Marshall on third and long, but the wideout is stopped for no gain. On fourth down, Prater connects ona 47-yard field goal attempt, giving Denver a 16-point advantage.

BRONCOS 16, GIANTS 0

Q2 – 3:28: Prater connects yet another kickoff deep into the end zone. Hixon catches the ball seve-yards deep into the end zone and New York will start with the ball at its own 20.

Q2 – 2:28 Jacobs rumbles his way up the middle of the defense for seven yards on first down. On second down, Manning patiently hangs in the pocket and finds Jacobs across the middle to move the chains.

Q2 – 2:00 After Manning throws incomplete to Steve Smith on first down, Jacobs follows his blockers and gains six yards rushing to his left on second down. Following the two minute warning, New York will face a 3rd and 4 from its own 43-yard line.

Q2 – 1:53 On 3rd and 4, Elvis Dumervil forces his way past New York’s offensive line and sacks Manning for a loss of 10 yards, forcing the Giants to punt. Denver used a timeout after the play.

Q2 – 1:41 Feagles is credited with a 55-yard punt. After Alphonso Smith is tackled for a loss of one on the return, Denver will start at its own 11 yard line.

INJURY UPDATE: Eddie Royal (thigh injury) is questionable to return to tonight’s contest.

Q2 – 0:51 After a five-yard gain by Buckhalter on first down, Moreno cuts toward the left sideline for a gain of 11 on second down, moving the chains for the Broncos.

Q2 – 0:49 Moreno burts along the right end for a large gain, but Graham is called for holding on the play, bringing Denver back to its own 17-yard line.

Q2 – 0:00 Buckhalter rumbles his way up the middle for three yards on 1st and 20. On 2nd and 17, Orton takes a knee, sending the Broncos into the locker room with a 16-0 lead.

NOTE: With his sack of Eli Manning in the first half, Elvis Dumervil now has 13 sacks in 2009 — a new career high. His previous career high was 12.5 sacks in 2007.
