Broncos vs. Falcons: Fourth Quarter Notes

November 16th, 2008 - 10:10am by Kyle Sonneman

15:00: Matt Prater is out to attempt the short field goal attempt. From 20-yards out, Prater is good.

Broncos 17 – Falcons 13, 14:56 remaining.

14:56: Harry Douglas is now back deep for the Falcons. He is replacing Jerious Norwood, who suffered a rib injury. His return is questionable.

Douglas is stopped by Louis Green, first down Falcons at the 23-yard line.

14:15: After short runs by Michael Turner and Matt Ryan, the Falcons have a third and nine that falls incomplete. Flag down, looks like offsides. Yep, Jarvis Moss got going a little quick. Third and five.

12:38: The Falcons convert the Broncos mistake into a first down and the Falcons are now on the Denver side of the field.

12:00: Time is called as Bronco is banged up. It is Kenny Peterson, looks like he is alright as he walks off on his own power.

Spencer Larsen — who has to be tired at this point — stops Turner short of the first down. Another third down for the Falcons… Ryan in the gun, finds Finneran underneath for the first down. Good blitz pick up by the Falcons.

Another Bronco is down, looks like Marquand Manuel. It is Manuel, he is helped off the field by the Broncos training staff. Vernon Fox has come in to replace him.

10:58: Turner gets his longest run of the day and a touchdown going in from 28-yards and the Falcons are back on top.

Falcons 20 – Broncos 17, 10:41 remaining.

10:41: Broncos start with the ball at the 17-yard line… Cutler gives to P.J. Pope, who is stood up by Domonique Foxworth for a 3-yard gain. Second down, Cutler looks for Scheffler down the middle of the field, but he is well covered. Third and seven… The Atlanta crowd is on their feet, Cutler in the gun looks deep and hits Brandon Marshall for a big gain and a first down. Gain of 47 yards.

That was Marshall’s longest catch of the year.

8:41: Carries by Peyton Hillis and Pope give the Broncos a first down.

7:41: Tatum Bell shows he still has his burst, picking up nine yards and then a first down. But the first down is coming back, Chris Kuper is flagged for holding.

7:21: Second and 12 from the Atlanta 22-yard line. Cutler finds Hillis, who tip toes for a first down. Nice body control on the sideline. 14-yard gain and first and goal. After a Hillis run, the crowd noise causes the Broncos to false start. Second and goal from the nine.

5:48: Third and goal from the 9-yard line, Cutler scrambles and finds Daniel Graham for the touchdown. Prater is good and the Broncos have taken the lead.

Broncos 24 – Falcons 20, 5:35 remaining.

That is Graham’s fourth touchdown reception in the last five games.

5:32: Norwood is back and returns it to the Atlanta 24-yard line.

4:15: Elvis Dumervil gets a great jump, but just misses Ryan. Ryan fires it deep, but incomplete. On second down, Ryan hits White for 12 yards and the first down.

3:10: Falcons at midfield is nearly picked off by Jamie Winborn. Winborn had it in his hands, but could not hang on. Third and seven, Ryan in the gun with split backs. Broncos bring pressure but Ryan stands tall and hits Finneran for the first down. 13-yard gain.

2:10: Just before the two-minute warning, Winborn stops Turner for no gain.

2:00: Falcons have it, second and ten at the Broncos 38-yard line. Both teams have all three timeouts remaining.

Ryan remains in the gun, he is pressured and throws the ball away. Flag on the play, former Bronco Tyson Clabo is flagged for holding. Second and 20 from the 47-yard line.

1:52: Ryan hits Jason Snelling on second down for two yards. Third and 18, Ryan gets the snap and looks towards White in the back of the endzone. He is there, it is in his hands… but he drops it. Fourth down.

1:06: Falcons call a timeout facing a fourth and 18. And right after that timeout, the Broncos call one of their own to talk about the offensive alignment.

Broncos have six defensive backs out. Ryan gets the snap and overthrows Michael Jenkins. Broncos ball.

0:58: Cutler comes out to the field and pitches to Bell. Gain of three yards and the Falcons call a timeout.

0:52: Cutler pitches to Bell who falls in front of the first down marker. Falcons call their last timeout, but the Broncos pick up the first down sealing the ball game.

Well looks like they are going to review the spot. I spoke too soon.

Reversed the call again, third down from the 46.

0:45: Another pitch to Bell, who gets the first down and then falls down. Now, that should seal the victory.

And it does, the Broncos move to 6-4 after defeating the Atlanta Falcons 24-20.

I would have liked to see the Broncos go for it there, it could have been a huge TD if they had gotten one.

  2. xlilmixedup33x says:

dang it, we really needed the TD instead of the field goal. but oh well, d needs to step up huge n our offense needs to convert every time. come on broncos we got this

  3. 07elway says:

Couldn’t agree more… it would have been a huge TD and it would have put us up by 8. Would’ve given Ryan more of a challenge than just getting past our 17.

By the time this game is over… it will be very close. Elam might just be the ending factor out of all this – which makes me extremely nervous. Our D just needs to stay strong and keep breaking up plays that would be huge for Atlanta. C’mon D!

    GO BRONCOS!!!

  4. BroncoBoy1993 says:

    that offsides just screwed us.

  5. vinster572 says:

nice nice stop by the D right there

  6. boedavi90 says:

our run defense is playing like a group on a mission today!

  7. bonzotodd says:

now would be a great time for a jack williams pick 6

  8. vinster572 says:

never mind that.. the nfl gameday said we stopped them on 3rd down but i guess not

  9. boedavi90 says:

the nfl.com game center is screwy…it told me that the Finneran catch went for -2 yards, and then Turner was stopped for a loss of 5 on 4th down…

  10. BroncoBoy1993 says:

    our pass d is garbage.
they are going to lose the game for us.
    and mm is out.

  11. 07elway says:

Good grief… two Broncos down in less than 5 minutes. Are we gonna have any players left by the end of the season??

And yes our D is playing like they are on a mission – that’s the way its supposed to be done. They’re starting to get the picture. Keep it up but I want to see our offense on the field more and make our lead much bigger than being up by 3. Well, nevermind – they let them get another TD. Oh boy… our offense has got to get us a TD and get back our lead. This game is up in the air – it can be anyone’s game.

    Keep the faith…
    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  12. BroncoBoy1993 says:

    wow…
i dont know what to say to that

  13. vinster572 says:

same with me boedavi.. i was like yes they stopped them on 4th down and then i read this and im like wtf

  14. 07elway says:

What a catch by Marshall!!!!! That was insane… I had to wait to see if he came up with the ball… I thought it got intercepted. That was ridiculous. WOW. C’mon offense – go all the way!!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!

  15. boedavi says:

    Cutler to Marshall…i love it!

  16. bonzotodd says:

i love me some Tatum Bell. Just hold the rock, big boy!!!

  17. 07elway says:

Tatum is looking good for the carries he’s gotten. Nice 1st down by Hillis… that was some fancy footwork #22.

Cutler is so amazing at his passes… love it!!!
And its another TOUCHDOWN DENVER!!!!!!!!!! Way to go Graham!!!!
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

  18. broncoinexile says:

    Come On D!!

  19. broncosfromaway says:

if Wilborn could pick that one, the game is over. 2 more minutes D. Lets GO BRONCOS

  20. 07elway says:

Our D is stepping up so big today – we almost had that INT by Winborn. And he is in for Champ… all these guys need is a chance, fans who believe in them and they already got the leadership they need in Champ. Even on the sidelines he’s like a coach for these young defensive players we got.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

  21. broncoinexile says:

    Way to hold D!

  22. xlilmixedup33x says:

LETS GO D STEP UP N STOP THIS THEN WE GOT THIS!!!!

  23. superbowlboundbroncos says:

DEFENSE!!!!! DEFENSE!!!! DEFENSE!!!!!! LET’S GO DDDD!!!!

  24. SaloRB says:

    the longest timeout ever

  25. broncoinexile says:

    A W E S O M E !!!!!

    WAY TO GO D!!

    Enjoy the flight home!

  26. 07elway says:

Wow, that pass by Ryan to his guy in the endzone was WAY too close for comfort. That could’ve been game over. If we can just get that ball back, hold on to it – we’ve gotten by with a very well thought out game. Both sides for us had their down moments but we stuck through it and we’re going to walk out of there 6-4.

We definitely fought for this win. They played as a TEAM and look what happens. They couldn’t get it done on 4th down – we are getting so much better. If we can just take this season one game at a time – we could end this season 12-4. That will take everything we got and we will have to outsmart some really good teams like Carolina & the Jets. No doubt San Diego will give us a fight but we’re willing to take them on.

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!

  27. xlilmixedup33x says:

GAME BABY!! great job D, peyton hillis, tatum bell, and especially spencer larsen. ur a beast man lets keep this up for the rest of the season!!

  28. 07elway says:

Denver has done it again. Way to go boys!!!! 6-4 has never looked so good.

Cutler was awesome as usual. I just wanna kiss him!!!!
That was such a good game and a good come back for us.

So proud to be a Broncos fan and forever citizen of Broncos Country.
    GO BRONCOS!!!!!

  29. imready says:

Absolutely outstanding! Game ball to the entire team and coaching staff! What an effort!

  30. Broncomania56 says:

Great Team Win!!!!! Lot’s of Positives in this one.

  31. RSH says:

It’s simple. When Denver doesn’t turn the ball over, they win. Granted, Denver made a lot of dumb penalties today at inopportune times, but for how injured they were, a win on the road against a team that not only hadn’t lost there, but had only trailed for 11 seconds at home, was quite a feat. The Broncos are starting to put it together. We finally saw some heart especially from Spencer Larsen and Peyton Hillis. Big win, now let’s hope the San Diego Sparklers lose in the snow at Pittsburgh.

  32. chuntbuck says:

really happy about the running game, and really happy about the defense for the most part. some people will be pissed about the third down conversions but our team is missing like 5 starters on d. i really hope that they hold onto that energy through the rest of the season. GO LARSEN!!!!

  33. SuperbowlXXXIII says:

I like the smart play of bell when he gets down after good yardage instead of fighting for more and saving a possible fumble. No turnovers and a hard fought game by the defense.

  34. stillafan says:

I know we have been on the D all year but that was as good as they have played in two years. Despite the injuries they had they played a complete game ,seemed to have found some chemistry, maybe some new starters time will tell i guess

  35. superbowlboundbroncos says:

Lets go Steelers!! Nice interception by Troy Polamalu as well.

  36. Atwater4HOF says:

yea not enough can be said about the efforts of Larsen, Hillis, Woodyard, Royal’s big kickoff returns, and all of those rookies that started today. Very impressive effort and Cutler played mistake free football. Bly came up huge with that pick as well, wish we didn’t get rid of Abdullah in the offseason though with the issues we’ve had at safety. We really should consider bringing barrett up from the practice squad

  37. oldsouthstander says:

For all you Tatum Bell bashers. Did you notice what he did as soon as he saw that he had enough yardage to seal the deal? He went down to guarantee there was no chance of a fumble!!!! How’s that for a heads up play?
Defense was exceptional!! Did anyone notice how many passes we completed in Foxy’s direction? A BUNCH!!!

  38. Cutlerizer says:

Well, the moral of the story is… what goes around comes around.
Atlanta drops a pass in the endzone to make up for the pass from Ryan dropped by Winborn (which would have ended the game).
    It’s only fair.

That was a great game. It just feels like we turned the corner as a team.
    Go Denver!
    Don’t let up on Jokeland.

  39. royalbroncofan1 says:

Game ball for Spencer Larsen !!! He played FB – MLB and special Teams !!

  40. rioabajo bronco says:

Go denver all we have do is stay on trac and A.F.C. West is ours

  41. bones1965 says:

So proud of the Defensive effort today…. Larson and Woodyard are studs. Bring in Barrett to replace lowry and we have something.

So Happy with this win a season changer go Steelers beat the Chargers.

  42. broncos20 says:

thank u Broncos for the magnificent effort..our boys just handed the Falcons their first home lost..SWEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!!

wow,,this week its Larsen,,,every week we see a rookie step up big time…and it keeps rollin forward….at first Hillis steppin in at Miami, den continued on to Clevland where he and Woodyard stepped up, now Larsen joins the wreckin crew,,,nxt time we might see Jack Williams joining in….
oh!we forget our boy CLADY..”omnipresent”…thanks again for keepin Cutler safe…against another big time pass rusher- John Abraham…

    gatta love this team..ALWAYS!YEAH!

  43. BroncoBoy1993 says:

    hey,
hows about a 2 game lead?
AND sandiego plays the colts next,
    weve got….. the raiders.

  44. broncosforlife80 says:

HUGE WIN! The D stepped up big and handled their own out there today. Rookies and back-ups filled in great and played great again today. Spencer larsen was huge for us today no doubt but im most imprssed by THE rookie Ryan Clady. He went up agianst one of the preimere pass rushers in the league and stood his ground. GREAT JOB CLADY!

Cutler came up huge again which is coming to be a trend. GREAT JOB CUTLER!

The defense played great and really stepped it up. the offense stepped it up when they had to and played an overall great game. Glad to see that running game taking shape. Bell did pretty good in my opinion for his limited carries. and hillis played a great game today.GREAT JOB HILLIS!

Overall Great team win. Way to hand those dirty birds their first loss in their own house. GREAT JOB!

And the weak ass chargers lost. 2 games up in the west!

    6-4!! LETS GO BRONCOS

  45. broncoAI says:

    HELLyea!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  46. George Bush says:

What a fantastic performance full of guts and heart. When you take into account the terrible setbacks the Broncos have suffered through what looks like a world record injury list this must be the best performance by any team this season. Superb.

Can anybody tell me the specific rule on throwing the ball in front of the line of scrimmage. I am certain that on Rivers last missed throw into the end-zone his hand was in advance of the scrimmage line when he released the football. Should this have been flagged?

  47. West Coast says:

I know all of our starting linebackers are out but these kids are outplaying our starters. D.J aside these kids are flat out better, faster and are ball hawks. We are loaded with yound talent and they will improve each game that goes by. Glad that Larsen finally got a shot. I told you guys he was a stud. Great job guys.

  48. royalbroncofan1 says:

George Bush: according to the rule, the entire body has to be past the line of scrimmage. Rivers would not have been flagged on this call.
What a great day for football… a second consecutive 4th qtr comeback for Cutler and the offense. Great catch by Marshall on the last drive – 47 yds!! Also Peyton Hillis staying inbounds and tiptoeing down the sideline for a first down. Tatum did well considering he only had a few days to get ready! Way to go Spencer Larsen – Great job at MLB – FB and Special Teams !!!!! Defense looked good today !!!!   GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!

  49. broncos14441 says:

To add to the great day, THE CHARGERS LOST!!! We are in 1st place by 2 and 1/2 games (with the tiebreaker) and there are only 6 games left! I hope we can hang on!
Also, doesn’t it suck that the season’s almost over? Hopefully we get a few playoff games to lengthen the season!
