Broncos vs. Dolphins Series History

October 21st, 2011 - 9:18am by Stuart Zaas

The Broncos will take their talents to South Beach this weekend in search of their 400th regular-season victory.

All-time, Denver is 0-7 on the road against the Dolphins, but as Broncos Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway was quick to point out on this week’s episode of Elway Live, the team did win Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami with Elway earning MVP honors in his final NFL game.

Sunday will mark the 16th regular-season meeting between the two clubs. The Broncos own an overall record of 3-11-1 in those contests, and have lost the past two games to Miami. The teams have met once in postseason action, with the Broncos dominating the Dolphins 38-3 at Mile High Stadium during AFC Divisional Playoff action en route to their Super Bowl XXXII title.

Notable performances against the Dolphins:

  • CB Champ Bailey: Intercepted one pass, forced one fumble and finished with seven solo tackles at Miami (9/11/05).
  • S Brian Dawkins: Has intercepted passes in three of his four career games against Miami, including one that he returned 67 yards for a touchdown (10/24/99).
  • RB Willis McGahee: Averages 83.4 rushing yards per game in 10 contests against Miami. He has topped the 100-yard rushing mark three times and has a career record of 8-2 vs. the Dolphins.
  • Denver-Miami Roster Connections

Some interesting roster connections between the Broncos and Dolphins courtesy of research done by Public Relations Intern Cydney Ricker:

  • Dolphins WR Brandon Marshall played in Denver for four seasons (2006-09).
  • Miami defensive coordinator Mike Nolan coached Denver’s special teams/linebackers from 1987-92 and served as the team’s defensive coordinator in 2009.
  • Broncos linebackers coach Richard Smith was the Dolphins defensive coordinator in 2005.
  • Nolan has twice been the defensive coordinator for Broncos CB Champ Bailey – during the 1999 season in Washington and the 2009 season in Denver.
  • Broncos Head Coach John Fox was the head coach in Carolina for four seasons (2007-10) in which Dolphins QB Matt Moore played with the Panthers.

I see “history” and I figure Sacco is on but he has been absent for quite a while now, hope everything is ok with him.

    2. henryac says:

Should be an interesting game on Sunday. Have to go, Broncos 24,Dolphins 10. The only way they score more than 10 is on defense or ST!

    3. raidrhadr says:

He’s a North Denver Italian. He’ll pop in when you need him most. My Uncle went to HS with him.

    4. raidrhadr says:

I didn’t realize that about Matt Moore being on the Panthers team. That’s great!!! Hopefully Fox will have that all dialed in and be able to scheme against him better.

    5. arch4662 says:

I think this game is going to be closer than people think. Dansby is solid and prob going to shadow Tebow the whole game. V. Davis is a very good corner and should avoid his area. I still think we win but its going to be tougher than some of you guys are predicting.

    6. baylinorcrush says:

      LMAO @ North Denver Italian.

    7. baylinorcrush says:

Was it meant to say Italians are unreliable, or unpredictable maybe?

    8. raidrhadr says:

I would never say anything bad about a North Denver Italian. Especially since my mother and grand parents on her side were.

    9. baylinorcrush says:

Hugh Douglas on ESPN predicts Dolphins win 21-7 !!!

    10. royalbroncofan1 says:

Nothing but respect here for you raidrhadr, as we both served in US Mil so I’ve got your back.

    11. sndvl says:

      San Diego?

And the 3-11-1 record? Does that include the post season victory?

    12. royalbroncofan1 says:

      Peter King at SI:

“We’re going to have about 10 Andrew Luck Bowls before this season’s over. This is the first one, a game matching the 1-4 Broncos and the 0-5 Dolphins, with so many of each team’s fans hoping to lose out. I’m happy Denver’s finally giving Tim Tebow a chance to play — and the smart thing here would be for John Fox to give Tebow five or six more starts. Denver needs to know what Tebow is, and whether he should play any part of the long-term Bronco future. By the way, Denver is 0-7 lifetime at Miami. And Timmy shall show them the way”.

      Kings prediction: Broncos – 23
      Dolphins -10

    13. baylinorcrush says:

arch, you must be talking about daddybronc 45-10 prediction, or Bomber or Cody or Religion 31-13, samurai 28-7, Rabid or theotheredge 30-10, papapete 30-13, 27CRUSHER 35-12, Oranges 24-7, Collies 30-7, LAX 37-13, Finney 28-7, Bronco30 31-10, Crazy 34-9 and sndvl 23-7, yeah, lots of hype with this Tebow start.

    14. raidrhadr says:

Thanks royal. What branch for you? I was Navy…20 yrs.

    15. baylinorcrush says:

rbf1, was King’s material an inspiration for your 24-13 or the other way around or none of the above, haha.

    16. Carsonic says:

Shouldn’t that 2nd headline say “Denver-Miami roster connections”, and the following sentence start “Some interesting roster connections between the Broncos and Dolphins…”?

    17. baylinorcrush says:

We all make mistakes, sndvl already pointed that one out.

    18. baylinorcrush says:

Poor Zaas, it started the other day with his headline Tebow will have his first career start against the Dolphins.

    19. sndvl says:

I see our D coming up with a couple of timely turnovers setting us up for 10 points. Tebow is good for the other 13.

Though my instinct was to predict a loss, I just cant find myself to do it. Yet.
I dont believe our torrid record should be taken lightly. And it wont be too big a shock (to me) if we fall short…

Which like I said in an earlier post

“The winner of this game could be the loser. The loser could be the winner”

    20. sndvl says:

I need to learn to proof read…I don’t think our torrid record *against Miami* should be taken lightly…

    21. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea I expected Saccomano when I read “History” as well.

Either we are over estimating our TT and the broncos or others are under estimating us cuz people really don’t expect us to win … against a team with NO wins … kinda sad when u think about it … but if Miami loses to us since we suck so much apparently … they should officially start to suck for luck altho if they lost to us they dont need much help in that category. This years draft is gonna be interesting … interested to see how many people try to trade the farm for luck. I hope he lives up to the hype

RBF1, They can stuff it. We aint in no luck bowl. TRB

    22. baylinorcrush says:

Oldsouth is really enjoying this competition and he put his eggs in the we lose basket… The contest leader with 14 points, it would kill me if he cleans up again at the expense of a loss against an 0-5 team.

    23. daddybronc says:

      SNDVL – Pssssssssss

    24. royalbroncofan1 says:

Actually just read his Kings this morning bay… lol!

    25. royalbroncofan1 says:

      raidrhdr – USAF 20 yrs.

    26. royalbroncofan1 says:

Agree TRB! Hope TT does well for Broncos !!

    27. baylinorcrush says:

      Turbo Tebow, here we go!

    28. raidrhadr says:

      Thanks for your service royal!!!!

    29. killerkod says:

I just hopped out of my DeLorean with an article written in 2021

      Ten Years of Tebow Time!

It is the 10 year anniversary of when Tim Tebow became the official starter of the Denver Broncos. That move, made for the October 23rd game against the Miami Dophins, was the beginning of a dynasty which allowed the Broncos to become AFC champions for 4 consecutive years starting in the 2012 season, and led to three Super Bowl appearances and 2 Championships.

A guy can dream, can’t he?

      LMAO!

    30. killerkod says:

AFC west champions……….if they were the AFC champions 4 consecutive years, then they would be at 4 Super Bowls………

      Gotta proof read!! lol

    31. daddybronc says:

Ladies and Gentlemen – Our dear friend Bay has given reason this morning to doubt our dearly beloved Broncos – (not that he is a doubter but he did supply us with a bag of naysayers from the left-coast-headed-south.)

Before you all go back and commit game prediction suicide….

The Broncos are a talented team – they have always been a talented team at almost every position. It is clear to date, that the Broncos have not had the leadership and team camaraderie in order to work together to bring in the wins. All that changed mid game against SD.

Little Timmy doesn’t/can’t win it by himself. Little Timmy will not skill – stat teams to death. What TT does is make each man on the roster forget his paycheck for 3 hours each week, and instead causes them to focus on playing for each other. Championships are won in the lockerroom, not by superstars. Orton has said it after every game – good performance in every category except…..all we need to do is get everyone doing good throughout the whole game …..

Little Timmy is pulling this team together – and while yes he does have to perform to keep them together…he will do his job and score TD’s.

    32. Kengro says:

ROFL Killerkod. At least you caught you own mistake.

    33. daddybronc says:

Kod – it isn’t a dream. TT has pulled up mediocre players into championships at every level. The Broncos are on their way!

      Teamwork and attitude!

    34. daddybronc says:

      Tate –

The Tim Tebow era begins on Sunday in Miami. This is going to be the easiest road start of his career because there will be more Tebow fans in the stands than Dolphins fans.

He also gets the benefit of facing a pass defense that is giving up 284 yards per game.

There is not much to say about the Dolphins. They are a bad football team that might not win a game this season.

      Broncos 17 Dolphins 10

    35. Big D 44 says:

Nice killerkod… That would be awesome! And daddybronc I totally agree. I know I have orange and blue blood and tend to be an optimist. But I couldn’t agree more with you guys. Tebow demands that everyone out on the field plays every play like it could be there last. He lifts his teamates and makes them play to their true potential.

      The anticipation is killing me!

    36. royalbroncofan1 says:

raidrhdr- thank you for your service !!!

      Mile High Salute !!!!!

    37. baylinorcrush says:

daddy, one of the thing I regularly do is look at what things look like on the opponents side, helps me gain a little objectivity on the match up.

    38. Kengro says:

Daddybronc- Tebow didn’t have mediocre teamates at Florida. That was a solid team top to bottom. He was there best player.

    39. baylinorcrush says:

daddy, looking at what’s going on around the opposing team is something I do every week, helps me gain a little objectivity on the match up, like not posting a 45-10 prediction, LOL.

    40. baylinorcrush says:

Sorry about double post, didn’t think first one posted.

    41. killerkod says:

      Whatever happens, happens.

At least we’re gonna know what we got with TT behind center……..and that’s all I wanted. He might be our franchise QB, or he may be outta here next season……..

      THE UNKNOWN IS EXCITING!!!

    42. daddybronc says:

You have to stay balanced and in perspective Bay because of the roll you play on the blog – no problem – I appreciate what you do.

But I don’t have to be balanced at all – I’m a fan=FANATIC. And every now and again – crazy/wild things happen!

“Warner is objectively right about this much: Everyone is watching Tebow. They are watching to see how he responds to this situation as a quarterback in the NFL. And they are watching to see how he responds as a person.

As sad as it might seem, it would surely make plenty of people pleased to see him mess up in both regards. But while some continue to withhold their opinion of Tebow as a football player, those close to him will never waver when it comes to their thoughts of him as a person.

“He’s genuine to the utmost degree,” said Pouncey, an offensive lineman who, by the way, has heard Tebow thank God before him. “If I have a daughter someday, that’s the kind of guy I want her to marry. I love him. He’s a great friend of mine. I wish him the best of luck.

“And I hope he proves everyone wrong.” “

    43. daddybronc says:

      I have to admit –
I have coached many sports at many levels – up to High School.

I’m not conservative in my approach to sports – but my teams win.

I got fired for 6 onside kicks in one game as special teams coach Cornerstone Christian High- 5/6 and we won 38 – 3. I don’t get it! LOL

    44. 4Eva-A-Bronco says:

College finals done, check, 60 hour work week completed, check. Bronco win, standby but I believe check. Ahhh you guys notice how zaas is the one posting all the blogs? I spend more time trying to read everyones comments than actually commenting lol. Anyways being led by TT this Sunday, may not result in a win, but I guarantee it will at least result in exciting and electric football. Yes bay feel free to collect on that guarantee LMAO. Like so many others are saying man I wish it was Sunday already. Go Broncos.

    45. killerkod says:

We need a new contest bay…………

How many yards will TT rush for?

I’m placing my wager on 56.

      LMAO

    46. sndvl says:

      The Champ still at it!

The Post described a “somber mood” in Denver’s locker room during the bye week before Tebow’s first start this season, which comes Sunday against the Miami Dolphins . While Broncos fans and the football press unleashed a furious storm of Tebow-related white noise, Denver’s veterans couldn’t help but feel for the demoted Kyle Orton .

“I think what’s tough is people just decide it’s all him, that’s why we’re 1-4,” Bailey said. “That’s not the case, it’s not just him. It’s that praise/blame thing with the quarterback. They get it all sometimes, whether it’s right or wrong. They know that, it comes with the territory.”

      http://m.nfl.com/news/09000d5d82353ee2/broncos-bailey-switching-qbs-different-than-anything-else/

    47. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, it looks like Darrent Williams in the pic.

    48. baylinorcrush says:

The locker room in a somber mood?? They better snap out of it, Miami doesn’t care about Orton’s demotion, just saying.

    49. killerkod says:

still makes me so mad that he’s no longer with us……….

    50. killerkod says:

I sure hope Orton shows some class and supports Tebow in this game……….and doesn’t sit on the bench and pout.
