Broncos vs. Cowboys: Fourth Quarter Notes

August 16th, 2008 - 9:21pm by Gray Caldwell

15:00: The Broncos have a 2nd-and-4 at the Dallas 36. Pittman takes the handoff up the middle and gains two more yards.

14:30: Pittman takes a pitch to the right side and comes up just short of a first down — 4th and 1 at the 33 and the Broncos are going for it.

13:45: The Broncos call their second timeout — a full timeout — just as the play is about to be run.

13:45: Ramsey fakes a pitch to Pittman to the left and rolls out right, finds Colbert who had his man beat, throws behind him just a little but Colbert adjusts, catches it, turns and takes it to the 5-yard line.

12:22: Ramsey lobs a pass to the back right corner of the endzone and Clifford Russell almost goes up and gets it — it falls off his fingertips as he leans backward and falls out of the endzone. Third and goal.

12:06: Glenn Martinez makes a catch at the two-yard line and heads toward the endzone but Orlando Sandrick hits him hard and he lays on the ground for a couple minutes. He gets up and walks off the field under his own power as the crowd applauds.

12:06: On 4th-and-2, Prater is in to kick the 19-yard field goal from the left hashmark. It’s good and the Broncos go up 20-10.

12:00: Another touchback for Prater. Now the defense has a little bit of a different look. Spencer Larsen is in at linebacker along with Jordan Beck and Wesley Wooyard, and Josh Barrett joins Tyrone Poole, Roderick Rogers and Jack Williams in the secondary. Carrington, Clemons, McKinley and Birdine make up the defensive line.

10:19: Bartel and the Cowboys are driving after a couple of long passes found receivers just in front of the coverage. They have a 1st and 10 at the Denver 13, but Beck gets a big stop in the backfield to bring up 2nd-and-12.

8:51 Bartel scrambles to the right for a five-yard gain down to the 11. Third-and-8. He takes the snap, big drop, but Woodyard makes a diving breakup of a pass and gets congratulated by Barrett and Rogers as the Cowboys are left with a fourth down.

8:05 Folk makes a 29-yard field goal and the Cowboys are down a touchdown, 20-13.

7:57 The kickoff is bobbled in the endzone but still downed for a touchback. Ramsey lets loose a long bomb to Clifford Russel down the left side and he dives for it but it’s just off his fingertips.

6:52 Brett Kern punts 63 yards and Dallas gets a 9-yard return. First and 10 on their own 23.

6:52 Long completion from Bartel to tight end Rodney Hannah to their own 43 yard line for the Cowboys.

6:22 Offsides on the defense, 1st-and-5 on the 48. Jordan Beck shaken up on the play but he walks off the field. Play resumes and Bartel lines up in the shotgun. Spencer Larsen gets a big hit on Keon Lattimore after a two-yard gain.

5:22 Lattimore picks up the first down and is tackled by Woodyard. First and 10, less than 5 minutes to play and the ball is at the 27.

4:07 Tyrone Poole makes the tackle on Danny Amendola, but not before he picks up another first down at the 15-yard line.

3:27 Bartel lines up in the shotgun and throws a pass that bounces off his receivers hands and is close to intercepted by the Broncos near the endzone. Second and 10.

3:20: Spencer Larsen drills Bartel as he floats a pass to the back left corner of the endzone, but it’s past his receiver. Third-and-10.

3:12: Jack Williams makes the stop after a 5-yard pass. Fourth-and-5 at the 10-yard line.

2:26: Jack Williams intercepts Bartel’s pass and looks like he’s gone for six points but gets tackled by his shoestrings from behind by a diving Bartel. Williams returns it 34 yards, Broncos ball at the Dallas 42. Hackney is in at quarterback.

2 Minute Warning: Second-and-2 after an eight-yard Pittman run.

2:00: Pittman runs for no gain and Dallas calls its first timeout. Third-and-2 at midfield.

1:55: Hackney play action pass to Cecil Sapp out of the backfield for a first down, tack on a helmet-to-helmet roughing the passer penalty. First and 10 for the Broncos at the 25-yard line.

1:32: After a couple runs Dallas calls their final timeout. Third-and-10 at the 25-yard line. Pittman is stopped for no gain, but the clock continues to run.

0:47: Denver calls its last timeout, and Prater is out for a 43-yard field goal from the left hasmark.

0:43: The kick is good. Broncos 23, Cowboys 13.

0:35: Josh Mallard makes the stop on special teams. First-and-10 for Dallas at the 33-yard line.

0:00: The Broncos win their preseason home opener, 23-13.

That looks like a Shanny “What do you mean RAMSEY is still in the game” kind of timeout.

  2. WAbronc says:

    Put in Hackney, PLEASE!

  3. hrdnokd says:

Attention K Mart shoppers, Attention K Mart Shopers….Keary Colbert is currently on sale…..

  4. hrdnokd says:

    I’m disgusted with Ramsey now…..

  5. navy_bronco_fan says:

Ramsey just about got Martinez broken in half and why, ’cause he stared him down the ENTIRE play and the defense saw it all the way….

  6. hrdnokd says:

Gray…I don’t get paid a million dollars to evaluate players….I don’t have have a high powered job in the NFL….but you have 2 guys out here that can see a quarterback with NO BUSINESS on the field…..and bring up the Feeley thing too….

  7. navy_bronco_fan says:

So, Prater is 4 of 6 if I’m correct, which isn’t bad, he just has problems with the first kick of game I guess………..

  8. navy_bronco_fan says:

DANG, that new Dallas stadium is quite the deal, huh?

  9. hrdnokd says:

The problem though Navy is that the first kick is usually the first points……..

  10. navy_bronco_fan says:

    NICE play by Woodyard…..

  11. hrdnokd says:

I think Woodyard should make the team….he’s shown that he is a nice project and if you try to put him on the practice squad a team like the Texans will YANK HIM and put him on the squad…..so who gets cut at LB? It’s a hard world for Green….

  12. go cutler says:

i really like the effort we put on the field tonight i know we will move the ball i think hall might be the starter at rb . he looked impressive tonight and lets hear it for mr.royal . jay seems like he is getting good protection also im just proud of the effort . go broncos

  13. navy_bronco_fan says:

Okay, so the cowgirls channel has stooped to bragging about how much bigger their stadium will be than Denver’s……….HA HA….just like your offensive and defensive lines, huh?

  14. hrdnokd says:

It just came to me…..Shanny is testing Ramsey…..he won’t make the team….

  15. navy_bronco_fan says:

I agree….Woodyard looks good, Royal looks VERY good for a rookie WR, and, to me, Jay Cutler looks like a beast…………I know ALOT of fans of other teams have said that it wasn’t a big deal for Jay last year playing with diabetes, but I think they’re VERY wrong. Jay has bulked back up, got his strength back, and his passes are crisp and right on time. The kid has always had a good head on his shoulders, now he has the arm back…………..look out AFC West!!!!!!

  16. hrdnokd says:

If Jay-C got busy having a full blown DISEASE…imagine what he’ll do healthy…..Spencer is a FOOTBALL PLAYER…put him on the practice squad and fit him in at MLB….Poole is FIGHTING for an NFL roster spot.

  17. hrdnokd says:

    DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

  18. hrdnokd says:

    HOLLY FRICK!!!!!!!!

  19. navy_bronco_fan says:

SO CLOSE! LOL………..he’s gonna get some grief from the team for getting tackled by the QB, tho…haha

  20. hrdnokd says:

    with 4.3 speed….YOU KNOW IT….still…that’s a rookie that made his name again…..

  21. navy_bronco_fan says:

Dang right he made his name………..he just made probably a game saving INT!!!! LOVE IT!

  22. broncolover88 says:

where do you wach it on line

  23. hrdnokd says:

Hackeny should make the team over Ramsey…I don’t give a flying fart where he was drafted….or not…..

  24. hrdnokd says:

This is Prater’s job………MAKE THE KICK KID!

  25. piratehb30 says:

I say we cut pat ramsey and sign hackney. Hackney has potential

  26. hrdnokd says:

    NICELY!

  27. West Coast says:

Nice game. Please cut Ramsey and Poole. These two seriously suck. Very nice effort by the 1st team. Im pumped!!!

  28. navy_bronco_fan says:

Well, I’m impressed! The Broncos outplayed the cowgirls from top to bottom tonight. 1st string, 2nd string, AND 3rd string. The cowgirls are widely considered the best in the NFC and they got whooped tonight! Great job BRONCOS!

  29. navy_bronco_fan says:

I’m not going to be so quick to diss on Ramsey and here’s why, his wife JUST had a baby yesterday. I know he’s a pro football player, but if having a kid doesn’t take your attention away from football then I don’t know what would. Patrick has been a proven commodity in the past, but he didn’t look very good tonight. I’m gonna keep the faith that he will be a solid backup, he just needs to remember to look the defenders off, that’s all.

  30. navy_bronco_fan says:

One last thought on the night………to the guys that write this blog, post the pictures, answer the fan’s questions……..hats off guys! I can’t tell you how much I appreciate being able to banter with fellow Bronco fans during the game all the while reading excellent coverage of what’s happening on the field. I don’t know how other teams websites are, but this one is AWESOME!

  31. Marshall 1...T.O. 0! says:

I agree with navy bronco fan on the Ramsey issue, I was there tonight and almost felt like booing at times. Even though Ramsey is showing a player that has obviously lost his arm we have to give him a little credit because he came in when Cutler was hurt and cept the team together when times looked really bad in Detroit, so he is obviously a good teamate but I think its about time to pull the plug. And for another point, its getting rediculous seeing all the fans of other NFL teams filling Invesco. I mean come on if you dont want to go to the games then dont renew your tickets and let real Bronco fans get to go to the games. And I also agree that this website is the best team site in the NFL, good job guys!

  32. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

First of all, congratulations to Eddie Royal, Jack Williams (man, Reggie Rivers sure was brutal on Williams for being tackled by a quarterback on the telecast) and Spencer Larsen, who had a key pressure on Bartel right before Williams’ pick. The Broncos were excellent with Cutler in the game and Prater did a good job, making three of four kicks. Nevertheless, if I have one critique, it’s that Patrick Ramsey should not be the second-stringer, it should be Darrell Hackney. Ramsey stares down receivers and in this instance, he almost got Glenn Martinez hurt, as several posters have previously stated. Keep up the good work, Broncos. If Cutler plays like this consistently, we’ll be extremely tough to beat.

  33. bones1965 says:

I am so glad that they beat the cowgirls. It was fun watching the game on that website (Dallas broadcast) because they had a blog next to the live action and Bronco Fans were ripping on the Cowgirls.

Eddie Royal AND Brandon Marshall are going to be good for a long time.

    Go Broncos!

  34. orange crush 92 says:

that was a great game. it really showed how good of decisions cutler makes and tonight they were great decisions with good touch on his throws. i would like to see the first team run game step it up a little bit though because in the last two games they have struggled. thanks much navy_bronco_fan for the link

  35. ramboskithefan says:

keep larsen, woodard, those two can be future stars in denver..cut ramsey i dont care if he 10 kids he still sucks!!!

  36. ocho_cuatro says:

People finally see what I have known for so long. Ramsey is sour milk.

  37. broncoAI says:

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. broncoAI says:

the cowgirls have nothing on the broncos

  39. BroncosProdigy2 says:

Foxy plays really tight coverage. From the highlights ive seen, he is always right on TO. Keep it up Dom…the ints will come soon.

  40. meisner says:

So happy broncos beat the cowgirls ecspecially after the were talking smack on the practice feild.

I’m hoping royal and Marshall become the next smith and mccaffrey… High standards but I think they can do it.

  41. oldsouthstander says:

All in all a good game.
First team offense looked great except that they had 4 inexcusable penalties. Run game so so. Passing game hitting on all cylinders. This is an all new O line and it takes at least 2 years for an O Line to get truly in sync so things will only get better.
First team defense looked pretty good, but pass rush was nonexistant. Give credit to theCowboys O line for that.
Kicking game. Prater misses a 49 yarder. It’s a 50-50 shot from that distance. I was glad to see Shanny kick a “meaningless” field goal at the end of the game. Great confidence builder for Prater and special teams, especially after the blocked punt.
Punting Game: Lindy’s Pro Football draft had the following to say about Kern: “Needs to turn the ball over to improve hang time, which maxes out at 4.5 seconds. Inconsistent in his drop and contact. Especially when prsssure is applied, he doesn’t hit the ball perfectly. Three-step delivery is too slow. Had eight blocked kicks at Toledo.” Paulesco, the job is yours to loose. Kern has shown his glaring weaknesses.
Kickoff return; Average field position 26. Nothing to write home about. Only one good return.
Kickoff coverage: Average field position 24 1/2 yard line. But, of the two kicks returned play for the Cowboys started at the 33 and 34. Not very promising.
Once again Ramsey shows why the Redskins gave hit the heave-ho. Doesn’t he understand the concept of looking off your intended receiver?
Short yardage ( 3 or less on 3rd, 4th and goal to go): Broncos were 6 of 7. Fantastic!!!!!
Green Bay game will be interesting as the Packers really stunk at San Francisco. Packers should be up for this game to redeem themselves.

  42. orangecrush44 says:

I know it’s only preseason but it’s still nice to beat the cowboys. I still remember the squashing of the “orange crush can” in the 77 superbowl.
    GO BRONCOS!!

  43. go cutler says:

i want to tell mr. prater that 49 yard miss was not your fault i seen the game today on nfl network and the snap was high keep up the good work.just impressed by the whole team. go broncos

  44. WhidbeyBronco says:

    Goooooooooooooo Broncooooooooooooooooooooooooos!~!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  45. G funk says:

I finally got to watch the game the Broncos looked great all around need to put more pressure on the QB’s but still look good I think so far Young has been good but i think Hall has shown more power when he runs. Jay has just looked awsome. Royal I new he was going to be good. Good going guys

  46. Broncobailey99 says:

Not only am I excited for the season… But the seasons to come… We have a YOUNG… GOOD team that has TRAMENDOUS potential in the next few years…

For our Offense, our young flashy stars of the future are of course Cutler, B-marsh,Royal, Scheffler, and hopefully Young is a truely good player

For Deffense, we have D.J. williams, Dumerville, Some more D-line, Foxworth, Jack Williams, and some hopefull LBs….

Now I was just listing the younger stars… Pardon me if I forgot someone I’m doing this fast… But we have GREAT potential for the future… Not just now but for the future as well and that gives me goosebumps…

  47. shelbo bronco says:

the kid from Vandy can play. he looked extreamly good out there

  48. columbusOHbronco says:

offense looked really good i think the line needs to block better for the run and once we can get that going we should be unstoppable. i cant waite until champ and boss get back in the line up. our defense should be allot better this year and one guy that is getting no love is kenny peterson, he is going to be very solid for us this year. whats up with webster over pursuing and missing tackles he needs to keep his head up and see what he is tackling. MLB is going to be the one position that is going to hurt us this year shanny might want to put dj back there and find someone else to play weak side. i just dont think niko has the speed and nate has the smarts, if we could put them together we would be set. i love that we have our qb, wr’s and tackles set for a long time to come. next stepp is getting that rb position set and once thats done we should have a great run for the next 10 years.
