Broncos vs. Chiefs: Series History

November 11th, 2011 - 10:02am by Stuart Zaas

The Broncos will travel to Kansas City this weekend to take on the Chiefs for the 102nd regular-season meeting between the two divisional rivals.

Denver trails the all-time series 46-55 and is 14-36 against the Chiefs on the road. Kansas City owns a one-game win streak in the series, having beat the Broncos 10-6 in the second meeting between the two teams last season. Denver came out on top by a score of 49-29 the first time the two teams met last season.

The teams have met once in the postseason, with the Broncos coming out with a 14-10 victory in what Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway called his greatest memory from his time playing against the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.

Notable performances against the Chiefs:

  • CB Champ Bailey: In 14 career games against Kansas City, Bailey has intercepted four passes and broken up a total of 14. In addition, he’s forced one fumble and registered a sack in last year’s game at Kansas City on Dec. 5.
  • DE Elvis Dumervil: Has totaled six sacks in seven career games vs. Kansas City, including one game where he finished with three sacks and one forced fumble against the Chiefs on Dec. 9, 2007.
  • CB Andre’ Goodman: Has intercepted passes in three of his four games against Kansas City. In addition to intercepting a pass, he also returned a fumble 30 yards for a touchdown at Kansas City on Dec. 6, 2009.
  • DE Jason Hunter: Returned a fumble 75 yards for a touchdown and posted one sack vs. Kansas City on Nov. 14, 2010.
  • LB Mario Haggan: Registered a career-high three sacks and forced the fumble that Hunter returned 75 yards for a touchdown vs. Kansas City on Nov. 14, 2010.
  • Denver-Kansas City Roster Connections
Some interesting roster connections between the Broncos and Chiefs courtesy of research done by Public Relations Intern Cydney Ricker:

  • Broncos wide receiver Eddie Royal played opposite Kansas City cornerback Brandon Flowers for three seasons at Virginia Tech (2005-07)
  • Chiefs running back Le’Ron McClain shared the backfield in Baltimore with Broncos running back Willis McGahee for four seasons (2007-10). Chiefs tackle Jared Gaither blocked for McGahee during that span.
  • Broncos punter Britton Colquitt and Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt are brothers, and are the first brothers to punt in the NFL at the same time since 1941 (George and Wes McAfee).

Looks like oakland was a little better team than people said. That should definitely give our guys some confidence since we pounded them pretty good. I feel like almost nobody knows what to expect from this game. The chiefs are doctor jekyll and mister hyde, and were developing all this new offense with young players. It should definitely be exciting.

That is cool brother punters versus each other…Wonder who the family is rooting for. LOL

This is a tough game to predict. Both of these teams have had split personalities this season–looking good to great at times, and then terrible at others. The Broncos have historically not fared well at Arrowhead Stadium, but beat Kansas City at Arrowhead in 2007 (27-11) and 2009 (44-13). I think the Chiefs, however, find a way to win this time around on Sunday by a score of 20-17–possibly in overtime.

So, what would be the crime in making Tebow a running back next year? U telling me he couldn’t do the things Hillis did? Third and one, big play, Tebow trucks a guy for the first down. How pumped would the crowd be? I’m not a Tebow guy when it comes to being the quarterback of the Denver Broncos, but I by no means want him off the team. Elway, get Luck or Barkley, keep Tebow as a back. Team will improve, fans have their “toy”, and everyone is happy going forward. In Elway I trust.

Bay – I appreciate the info given in the last blog. I find the front office difficult to evaluate. I wish we had a second with X to get the real scoop as to why Lloyd went for a 6-5 round draft pick. Seems that the GM role of playing the heavy/ hard negotiator is missing – but how do we know? Seems like Elway is being asked to step in at coaching, management, scout, GM,…no doubt Elway is a capable leader, executive. It seems to me that this is an experiment by Bolen, where he is placing the entire fate of the organization on the person that has caused the organization to succeed in the past.

    9. 1nOnlyTRB says:

CortoU, Tebow will NEVER play running back in this league. I believe he would sooner retire or keep shopping around for a team that believes in him as a QB. He has been told he can’t be a qb since highschool and that’s all he wants to be. He hs also proved them wrong at every level. He is just very unconventional but if it works … it works … I wont knock it.

They also forgot to mention that champ held bowe to his only catchless game last year … man played like the beast and perrenial probowler he is. Go Champ go.

      TRB

    10. CurtOU says:

So no one has tried him at running back you are saying?

He said he would do anything the Broncos asked him to do. Are you calling him a liar?

    11. OrangeTsunami says:

A 5 or 6 rounder for Lloyd does sound a little light, but he is 30 years old with only one good season.. I’m not defending Xanders, but getting 2 second rounders for Marshall was highway robbery.. So someone in our organization can negotiate..

I think our team scouts should also share some of the blame, b/c we’ve had terrible picks even dating back to the Shanny era….

    12. orangemnm says:

1nOnlyTRB is right, He wants to prove he is a quarterback. He will do whatever this team needs, but he is a quarterback full time, not running back full time.

I think he will prove he is a worthy starting QB. It might take time, or it might be this season, but he will make it. Good kid.

    13. daddybronc says:

Curt – it is very different for a guy to step in to replace injured players or to sit behind a starter, than to have a new contracted position. It would be a violation by the Broncos of Tebow’s contract for the organization to decide on day – hey Tebow – we’ve decided you are a running back now. The NFL isn’t like the military where once you sign, they own you.

When Tebow says he is coming into work with a great attitude willing to do whatever they ask – that is code for I’m supporting EFX and McCoy if they need sit me- play me as back up -trade me – you won’t hear me whine or bad mouth my team or the coaches.

    14. UKBroncos says:

Tougher to call than last week. Just know I can’t wait for the game…

Also on at 6pm GMT for once!

Heart says Broncos. Head doesn’t know. So I’ll go Broncos; 20 v 16

    15. henryac says:

CurtOU, he also said he before he was drafted that would be happy to play RB when someone proved to him he couldn’t become a QB. All he wanted was a fair chance to try. The jury is still out on that point so it might be a bit premature to start moving people until the season plays out. His other position when he was in Jr. High was ILB but that didn’t last long. He hasn’t played anything but QB in about the last 9 or 10 years. As far as Luck is concerned, at this point Denver would draft 11th or 12th by the latest projections so unless they give away the franchise for the next 3 or 4 years, they aren’t going to get him. The other big names, Jones and Barkley, will also likely be gone without a Carson Palmer-type trade which would set the whole organization back for a long time. Both of the top two teams need QBs in the worst kind of way, Indy and Miami, so the chances of them trading are probably about slim and none unless someone offers them a whole team for the picks!

Latest update on Woodyard by Legwold and what it will mean to us, plus team getting ready to leave later today for KC, or a day earlier than usual, which is something Fox has done to help out with playing the early games on Sunday:

Broncos linebacker Wesley Woodyard, who did not practice Wednesday or Thursday, was on the field this morning. He was still limping somewhat, but looked as if he would take part in practice on a limited basis.

Woodyard is a key special teams player for the Broncos — he’s third on team in special teams tackles — and plays in the Broncos’ specialty packages on defense as well.

The Broncos have routinely gone to their nickel packages (five defensive backs) against opposing offense’s three-wide receiver sets, and Woodyard is a regular on those units.

With the Chiefs expected to play plenty of three-wide-receiver formations Sunday using Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston and Jonathan Baldwin, the Broncos would have to make a major adjustment if Woodyard cannot play.

This season, the Broncos have been in some kind of nickel package for at least 38 snaps in five of their eight games, including 40, 39 and 44 snaps in their last three games, respectively.

All of the Broncos were at least in uniform for today’s practice and the team is scheduled to leave for Kansas City this afternoon. The Broncos will have a walk-through in the Kansas City area on Saturday.

    17. Orange_Crusher says:

CurtOU, you believe Tebow willQB the tiam to a win by 13 points in Arrowhead but he should be demoted to RB next year? Hmm? I don’t see the logic in this thinking. jomho

Bay – here is this weeks prediction: Broncos 31 – chiefs 17

Broncos have a pretty lousy record at Arrowhead but recently picked a couple of wins there. The momentum an confidence build on offence last week carries over to this week and our defence will just keep improving. This leads me to believe this game is not going to be as close as many folks on here predict. I see Kansas scoring less than 20 points on us and I see us scoring over 30 for the second consecutive road game.
3 sacks for Batman and Robin, 4 in total + another pick for Champ will help us. Chiefs will have to game plan for the read option so i see over 200 passing yards for Tebow. McCoy will have a pass play that works wonders up his sleeve this weekend.
My prediction was helped by a great bottle of Pinot Noir, if it comes true I will uncork another one next Friday evening :-)

      Enjoy the game everyone..
