Broncos vs. Chiefs: Second Quarter Notes

December 7th, 2008 - 12:50pm by Kyle Sonneman

15:00: The Chiefs will face a third-and-one at their 29-yard line to start the second quarter. Tyler Thigpen has Larry Johnson behind him, he gives to Johnson who gets the first down.

14:30: After the first down, Thigpen looks down the sideline for Tony Gonzalez, but rookie Josh Barrett has him covered. Incomplete and Barrett lets everyone know about it.

Second down, Thigpen throws it right to Wesley Woodyard, looks like he fumbled after the catch and the Broncos recover. But did he have possession? The refs say yes, but Herm Edwards says no. We will have another challenge. Josh Bell made the recovery for the Broncos, but it remains to be seen if Woodyard has possession before he fumbled.

INJURY UPDATE: Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has an ankle injury and is questionable to return.

Scott Green comes back from the hood, let’s see what he saw. Green says neither player had possession and it was an incomplete pass. Edwards is two-for-two on challenges.

14:04: Third-and-10 for the Chiefs.

Thigpen hits Dwayne Bowe on the bubble screen, he gets by Bell but Marquand Manuel closes. Chains are out and the Chiefs are short by just a few inches. Edwards keeps his offense on the field and they will go for it on fourth down… My guess is Johnson here, nope Thigpen keeps. This will be close. And here comes the chains again. First down… close, but Thigpen got it.

13:07: A first down incompletion and a Johnson five-yard run and it is third down again for the Chiefs. In the pistol formation, Thigpen hits Jeff Webb for the first down at the Broncos 45-yard line.

11:21: Following two Johnson runs, the Chiefs have third-and-3. Thigpen looks for Gonzalez — who is bracketed — but makes the grab. First down again.

9:21: Another short third down approaches for the Chiefs, and once again they get it. The Chiefs are four-of-four on third downs this drive and one-for-one on fourth downs. Plus, they have held the ball for some time. Nice drive by Kansas City to answer the Broncos score.

8:17: First down at the Denver 13, Thigpen rolls and finds Gonzalez who tip-toes in for the touchdown. Barth’s PAT is good and the Chiefs answer strongly.

Chiefs 17 – Broncos 7; 8:02 remaining.

8:02: After the touchback, the Broncos will start at the 20. After two carries by Hillis, the Broncos are facing third-and-four. Cutler in the gun, hits Brandon Marshall on the crossing route for the first down and more. Gain of 21-yards for Marshall.

6:02: After the big play to Marshall, Cutler looks for Graham on the screen but it is quickly stopped. Loss of one on the play… Hillis takes the second down carry for nine yards, third-and-two. Cutler is pressured, throws it up to Hillis, who make an awkward catch. Nice catch by Hillis, but he remains down. The Denver trainers are out to see him. 11-yard reception for Hills.

Hillis looks a little sore walking off the field, but he is walking under his own power. We will let you know his status as soon as it becomes available.

4:29: First down Broncos at the Chiefs 35-yard line. Cutler hits Royal, who follows his blockers for nine yards. Tatum Bell picks up the first down on the next play.

INJURY UPDATE: Hillis has a strained right hamstring and his return is questionable.

2:00: Third-and-two for the Broncos at the 15-yard line of Kansas City following the two-minute warning.

Cutler in the fun with Bell to his right, Cutler keeps on the designed roll and picks up the first down. Six-yard gain and the Broncos have first-and-goal.

1:51: The Broncos are pushed back five yards after a false start by Chris Kuper. First-and-goal from the 14. Bell up the middle is stopped for no gain. Glenn Dorsey met Bell in the hole. Cutler finds Royal on second down, but he can only get to the 12. Third-and-goal. Cutler looks for Marshall and finds him in the corner of the endzone. Touchdown Brandon Marshall. Prater’s PAT is good, and the Broncos narrow the lead to three.

Chiefs 17 – Broncos 14; 1:05 remaining.

1:05: Prater booms one to the goalline. Kevin Robinson takes the ball to the 27-yard line. First down Chiefs.

Mario Haggan looks like he got banged up on the play. He is up and jogs off the field.

1:00: Thigpen hits Bowe quickly on first down for five yards. Second down, back to Bowe for the first down. Timeout KC.

0:49: After the timeout, Thigpen feels the pressure and throws behind Bowe… On second down, Thigpen hits Jackie Battle who just gets creamed by Woodyard. WOW.

Third-and-12, short to Bowe who is carried out of bounds by Karl Paymah. That will be the last play of the first half. The Broncos will receive to start the second half.

Chiefs 17 – Broncos 14.

  23. Cutlerizer says:

    Beautiful catch BMarsh!

  24. austin-bronco says:

WHAt’S UP!! I can’t eff’in believe it. Just like game 1. With the lead in the 2nd half, the thiefs kept picking up 1st down after 1st down, keeping us off the field. And we lose. Bad call on the interception, horrible spot on the 4th down. Why does it seem the officials are always against us?

  25. vinster572 says:

beautiful pass there by cutler to marshall

  26. KrisKros says:

We are still in it. No reason to lose hope. Give us a stop Denver D!

  27. teeoneuptoo says:

    What a throw…WOW!

  28. Cutlerizer says:

    Denver 14, KC 3, Cutler -7, Refs 7

  29. Chemaster says:

Another good drive – I hope not at the expense of Hillis. We need him big time. Now let’s get through the last 100 seconds of the half without a stupid mistake, score on the first drive after the intermission and hope the D picks up some steam.

  30. monodono says:

austin your focused on the wrong part of the game (we cant control any of that). Focus on the things the TEAM needs to do to win this game.
    GO BRONCOS! ! !

  31. vinster572 says:

what a hit by woodyard!!! holy crap

  32. monodono says:

    AND THE D HOLDS!

  33. vinster572 says:

when dj gets back they should try to move woodyard to mlb because we all know webster overruns every play

  34. lynch4prez says:

everyone chill out the defence is playing pretty good.. a bad spot on a 4th down and a called back INT, just didnt get the breaks

  35. Chemaster says:

Right – the D didn’t get the breaks. But after the called back INT, a tackle by Bell would have left 4th and yards – not inches. And the rest of the drive was against a soft D. If we pressure and tackle well, we force breaks, but we would survive without them. Back to the basics! GO Broncos.

  36. broncos20 says:

    yay! sweet….go Broncs
