Broncos vs. Chiefs: Key Plays

January 1st, 2012 - 7:21pm by Stuart Zaas

Third-and-4 at the Kansas City 15 (8:47, 2nd quarter): Quarterback Tim Tebow saw an opening on the left side, but was hit and stripped by Chiefs safety Kendrick Lewis. Linebacker Justin Houston fell on the loose ball, thwarting a potential Broncos scoring drive.

Third-and-6 at the Kansas City 36 (11:05, 4th quarter): Tebow scrambled on third down while looking for a receiver downfield, but was brought down for a loss of 9 yards by Houston and Chiefs defensive lineman Wallace Gilberry. The 9-yard loss took Denver from the Kansas City 36 back to the 45-yard line, taking the team out of field goal range.

Third-and-9 at the Kansas City 12 (5:53, 4th quarter): Chiefs quarterback Kyle Orton found rookie wideout Jonathan Baldwin for a 15-yard gain to extend the drive. Instead of punting from deep in its own territory with more than five minutes to play, Kansas City was able to run nearly two more minutes off the clock and drive to their its 46-yard line before punting.

Fourth-and-2 at the Denver 48 (0:19, 4th quarter): Tebow’s desperation fourth-down pass was intercepted by Kansas City cornerback Brandon Carr, ending the Broncos final drive of the game. The Chiefs took over with :08 remaining and Orton took a knee to end the game.

Haha. This is the shortish key plays post ever. It’s hard to have key plans with the offense demonstrated today.

  2. 3rdGeneration says:

Stuart: you can prewrite this for next week as well. Insert any quarter and time: 3rd and long, Denver runs a toss sweep left and is stopped short. Insert any quarter and time: 3rd and long, Tebow runs up the middle and is stopped short.

My favorite player is kuper and it’s devastating to lose him like that. Another reason I’m pissed off. Glad to see alot of people stating reality though, I can’t stand the thought of this going on again next year without a contingency plan (see: Matt Flynn).

  4. 3rdGeneration says:

Or add this: 4th and 1 centimeter from the Bronco 30. Fox punts.

  5. Louisianabroncofan says:

Repost cuz they popped another blog up while I was typing:

I am probably sounding a little aggravated but thats because I am. No offense to anyone but this cannot be ignored. We can’t sit around, be an average team, wait & hope tebow becomes an elite NFL passer because it won’t happen. No way. Ever. He had his day as a great college player but he will never bring the broncos any consistent great qb play. The idea that the whole coaching staff has to be fired but we should keep tebow is ludicrous. It’s not the coaches guys it’s tebow. In my opinion, of course.

  6. 3rdGeneration says:

Or how about this: 4th and 2 down by 6 with 1:20 left and no time outs left. Fox punts.

  7. Louisianabroncofan says:

Haha. Ur cracking me up 3rd. I needed that…

  8. 3rdGeneration says:

Louisiana. I don’t think it’s the coaches or Tebow. I like what the coaches have done with Tebow. It’s McCoys play calling that is killing me. We haven’t set our young QB up to succeed. Aaron Rogers wouldn’t be successful with our play calling. I’d be in favor of letting McCoy go due to that. I actually think Fox is great and will set us up for success, but route combinations and play calls stink.

  9. 3rdGeneration says:

I get the feeling McCoy thinks Tebow is as disabled as all of the kids he helps with the offensive scheme he has in place.

  10. Louisianabroncofan says:

I think the best oc in the world wouldn’t make tebow a great qb. I like fox and I’m glad he’s here. McCoy is not making tebow a bad qb though. He could do a little better, but what do you do with tebow? I say there’s nothing he can do, and mccoys in a tough spot because of that.

    Repost

This will get me stomped, I know, but I don’t care.

Maybe Tebow will never be an elite NFL passer; but maybe he will. I just think right now he isn’t allowed to even try. IMO, the playcalling flat out sucks. If TT has lost his fire — as someone elsewhere suggested — then who would wonder why with this playcalling. I believe what he’s showing is frustration.

I’m beginning to believe in the conspiracy theory after all. Elway doesn’t want TT, and who knows what Fox wants. I’m sure those six wins were a total shock to EFX, and in their minds messed everything up (going for Luck, etc.). They have dumbed down the offense to the point that there is nothing to get excited about or believe in.

‘Sorry if this riles some of you off. But it’s how I feel. And I’m pissed!

3rd your right the play calling does suck…run, run, pass, punt….In the games we won against good defenses we passed the ball before it was desperation time…can’t run all day and expect the QB to WR connection to be consistent…I saw Royal stop running on a pass he coulda took to the house….Wilis dropped another pass that he made a good adjustment too, but he dropped the ball…but I know this is the first time i’ve been expecting a broncos playoff win….So if u want tebow gone, ur not a true fan because as ugly as his numbers are we won the west after starting at an uglier 1-4…the team played better wit tebow. For those who think Flynn is so great, Brett Favre said it best..Rodgers shoulda won the SB earlier..that WR core is the best in the NFL..Stop cramping about our QB and enjoy our first playoff berth in 6 years…yes 6 YEARS!!!!!

Looking forward to Tebow VS Brady Part II, I have faith that DJ Von Doom will take care of Big Ben

  13. risky305 says:

I hope we use our TE more in the playoffs

  14. TheHorseWhisperer7 says:

It just aggervates me that if we lose to Pittsburgh next week, then Big Ben’s kicked us out of the playoffs the last 2 times(back in 2005).

One things for sure, to beat Pittsburgh we’ve gotta be able to get a good pass rush on #7

    GO BRONCOS!!

  15. champbrandon2484 says:

I agree with you main. I think Elway really wants Luck, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved heaven and earth to get pick numero uno from indy. Think: 2012 1st Round Pick, 2013 1st round pick, 2014 first round pick, 2012 2nd round pick, 2014 3rd round pick. I think Fox is alright, but McCoy has got to go. Maybe Fox just needs to take the playcalling duties, but he has enough to think about with all the Tebowmania and Tebowing hype. So they should just dump McCoy and try to get Turner. Turner is known for developing quarterbacks, and he isn’t bad at playcalling. he would make it easy for Tebow.

As for Xanders, we can do better than him. He is just a puppet for Elway. Fox has no personnel power at all. I think if he had a bit more power in the roster decisions, lloyd would still be here.

As for Tebow has clearly stopped his progression. I mean he threw 40 times again recently and we barely won. we haven’t played a decent game since we beat San Diego.

Next year, Elway must be held to a high standard, and if he pulls of a dumb trade for the first pick, he needs to be shown the door.

What a crock of crap…Took us out of field goal range? Fox had a great to let Prater end the season on a high note and choked the pooch! 63 yards in Denver is not impossible…

  17. killerkod says:

The D played a heck of a game and gave TT a ton of opportunities to put more than 7 points on the board……and what did we get? a meazly 3 off a ST play.

TT did absolutely zero in this game except bursting the suckage meter.

The tebow time clock is stuck on four weeks ago and a quarter past brutal.

  18. FLBroncoGator says:

main, you’re not far off the mark at all. This is ALL Fox, McCoy, and Elway and it is ABSOLUTELY a conspiracy. Tebow is worth more to the Broncos than Fox EVER will be. Fox flat out sucks any way you slice it. Anybody who says he doesn’t, clearly isn’t looking at the numbers which don’t lie.

    sounds about right
