Broncos vs. Chargers Series History

October 6th, 2011 - 8:57am by Stuart Zaas

Denver and San Diego will meet for the 103rd time on Sunday, marking the most common regular-season matchup for the Broncos. All-time, Denver is 54-47-1 (.534), including a 35-14-1 (.710) record at home against San Diego.

When the teams played one another for the first time, the Chargers franchise was still located in Los Angeles. The Chargers won that game 23-19 on Oct. 16, 1960 in Denver. The matchups have remained close throughout the teams’ history as the Chargers average 21.8 points per game to the Broncos’ 21.1 in the series.

Denver hopes to end a three-game losing streak to San Diego, having last won 34-23 on Oct., 19, 2009 in San Diego.

Notable performances against the Chargers:

  • CB Champ Bailey: In 14 games vs. San Diego, Bailey has totaled 73 tackles to go with four interceptions (one touchdown), one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and 14 pass breakups.
  • DE Elvis Dumervil: Made five tackles and two sacks with one forced fumble at San Diego (10/19/09).
  • WR Eddie Royal became just the second Bronco and 11th player in NFL history to return a punt (71 yds.) and a kickoff (93 yds.) for a score in the same game at S.D. (10/19/09).
  • CB André Goodman: Posted the lone sack of his NFL career at San Diego (10/19/09).
  • S Brian Dawkins: Forced four fumbles in six career games against the Chargers.
  • WR Eric Decker caught his first career touchdown pass vs. San Diego (1/2/11).
  • Denver-San Diego Roster Connections
Some interesting roster connections between the Broncos and Chargers courtesy of research done by Public Relations Intern Cydney Ricker:

  • QB Kyle Orton took snaps from Chargers C Nick Hardwick at Purdue.
  • San Diego Secondary Coach Steve Wilks coached the defensive backs at Notre Dame during S David Bruton’s sophomore season.
  • Chargers WR Vincent Jackson hails from Colorado Springs, Colo. and played four seasons at the University of Northern Colorado.
  • San Diego TE Kory Sperry is from Vineland, Colo. and attended Colorado State University.
  • Broncos Head Coach John Fox coached the Chargers’ secondary in 1992 and ’93.

Sndvl, I do agree with you on those drives and the Fells fumble. Thats a big bummer but Orton doesn`t move in the pocket. He`s making poor mistakes ar critical times in the game.

    2. strandoftds says:

Easy, they are the SB Champs!! No contest at all!

    3. BeastFromEast92 says:

3 and outs are killing us,the Defense is on the field too long, and without Champ our secondary is below average at best, but we have to sustain drives and keep our Defense off the field,Orton’s 2 ints and 50% completion ratio, combined with not being able to run is causing us to lose, not our Defense!!!

    4. strandoftds says:

Dispite playing the G.B. Packerslast weekend we are still going to lose every stinking game because Orton sucks.

    5. strandoftds says:

BFE, they don`t get it bro.

    6. CarnageBronc says:

So Hardhitting I ask you this….yes Tebow played with third and fourth stringers….but he was playing AGAINST 3rd and fourth stringers….Wouldn’t a more talented first string type player look like one against lesser talent

    7. strandoftds says:

In the eyes of the beholder!

    8. BeastFromEast92 says:

carnage,I am just wanting a skilled QB,we haven’t had one since Elway…. (12 years) tired of ordinary QBs that can’t get the job done,I agree we have other problems besides the QB position, but you have to start with the QB position 1st,if he isn’t getting it done time for a change, look at Moreno,he stumbled again and McGahee took his starting spot,is Orton any better than Moreno….no!

    9. strandoftds says:

If it were up to me I`d start Tim Tebow week 1. What do we have to lose. At least we`d know what we have in Tim this year. I mean, come on, were we really going to the playoffs this year with whoever is at QB. No, I don`t think so. So see what Tim can do and if he stinks it up, suck for Luck.

    10. BeastFromEast92 says:

Next year Orton will be gone,we will not win many games this year no matter who plays QB,so why not see if Tebow is our future or not,if he fails we draft another one, either way we need a LEADER at QB!!!

    11. CarnageBronc says:

SOOOO, can you be more specific about this time on the field thing….I think people are just making up stuff….yes we lost TOP, but a perfect split is 30/30….Pack only had 33 minutes….. They punted ONCE…that’s all on Orton?

    12. BeastFromEast92 says:

Sorry strand we posted almost the same thing bro!

    13. strandoftds says:

      THANK YOU!!!!

    14. strandoftds says:

No bro, we are both on que.

    15. CarnageBronc says:

      TN….30-29 TOP

    16. strandoftds says:

BFE, I bet you Bays reading right now behind the scenes laughing hi tail off. LOL

    17. BeastFromEast92 says:

The Packers are the best team in the NFL right now,to beat them you have to outscore them, and that’s hard to do when you have turnovers and can’t score over 20 points a game. The QB has to take it on his shoulders to take every opportunity to score, and make plays when there is none,Orton dosen’t do that.

    18. BeastFromEast92 says:

      LOL,your probably right strand!

    19. strandoftds says:

Well said BFE. SB champs against a Pee Wee legue team AT THE MOMENT.

    20. CarnageBronc says:

SOOOOO why just ask to get Orton out….there were no MORENO sucks posts after every game…no one is going GET DAWKINS OUT….Let’s see what we have at safety….DROP GOODMAN, see if someone better can play…so at every position it is ok to let the best player play, except QB….even if teh guys in the other positions are playing poorly?

    21. strandoftds says:

      We`re wasting our breath bro.

    22. CarnageBronc says:

Beast what was the final score? Since we can’t score over 20….also, when does the defense make a stop….

    23. BeastFromEast92 says:

Well I’m gone, but I will leave saying the QB gets more heat than other players when you lose!!!

Especially when you throw ints and fumble!!

      Later strand!

    24. strandoftds says:

We do have a few holes to fill and thats a given, but it starts with a QB that has team leadership and we have that in Tim Tebow and furthermore has the IT FACTOR INTANGIBLES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    25. seweatherman1 says:

      CarnageBronc,
Just what is it about Tebow that you don’t like? Just curious? I mean, I realize you are in love with Orton, but you really don’t need to cram him down our throats. I don’t care anything about all of these other qb’s on these other teams. I do care about those on my team, and their performance. Orton’s has not been that good. Yes he is showing good numbers for yards passed. That isn’t the only stat that makes a good qb. I look at other things besides stats. I can not judge those that I have not seen play. Tebow, Quinn, nor Weber have been given the opportunity to play behind our #1 offense this year. Last year Quinn did not play and Tebow only played in the final 3 games. I have no clue what you saw in those 3 games, but I saw an entirely different offense AND defense than what had been playing the previous 13 games. Was that because of Tebow? I don’t know. Maybe yes, maybe no. The bottom line this year right here, right now is that, in my opinion, Orton is not getting the job done. He is not showing any spark to or for the team around him to get or be excited to be on the field. One other thing, Orton made the statement in an interview prior to the season beginning that he was improved this year over last year and had a much better offense on the field than he had last year. His excuse last year was the offense and defense. I don’t think he can lay the blame this year on the offense or defense. He is still showing his weakness in the red zone, along with other weaknesses he had last year. The 3 games Tebow played last year did’t seem to have that much problem in the red zone. By the way, I predicted we would win this game. I did not make that prediction because Orton will be the qb. I made it because I feel that our defense will win it for us.

    26. strandoftds says:

Later BFE, I`m out as well. No need wasting my breath anymore. LOL

    27. seweatherman1 says:

You guys have a gooe. I’m gone.

    28. sndvl says:

Tebow they all yell. We don’t know why. But it just sounds good. Give me more Tebow. Tebow. Tebow. He’s got it. Don’t know what it really is. Just know that Orton doesn’t have it. Even though he’s has a 2-1 TD to INT ratio. We don’t care. He’s boring. And Tebow isn’t. Raise him up. He was uber successful under Urban in college. No way he doesn’t repeat that success at the next level. Tebow Tebow he’s are man. If he can’t do it (as long as it not Orton) than we’ll sell the farm to get Luck because HE CAN 2

    29. papapete says:

Carnage his last int bounced off of the WR chest. I have it in slow motion. it hit him right in the #s. But Carnage give it up…..the tebows won’t hear and on the other hand the ortons wont either.

    30. CarnageBronc says:

I have often said I don’t love Orton, I just said he was better than Tebow….everyone refers to the “3 games” we were 1-2 and being beaten handily by Houston, until they went to prevent and blew the game. That’s a fact. Fact Orton 58.8 % completions Tebow 50.0% that is INCLUDING the great Houston game….fact QB rating Orton 87.5 Tebow 82.1 facts against Chargers TEBOW 16/36 2TD 2INT

    31. CarnageBronc says:

papapete…I don’t mind hearing rational discussions on a topic…as long as they are just that rational….Is Orton superman, NO…is he the best QB on OUR team…YES…therefore support the guy and move on…This team is not 1-3 solely because of Orton, and if ANYONE can’t see that the defense is TERRIBLE yet again…then WHOA

    32. WieminCA says:

Hard to figure this Chargers team – I think they’re a lot different without that little scooter that went to the Saints … they’re 3 – 1, but the teams they beat are a combined 1 – 11 – imagine that … and they lost decisively to one of the best in the league … we, on the other hand, have lost 3 games to teams that are a combined 9 – 3 … and the team we beat is 2 – 2 … what does all that mean? – don’t really know, other than the Chargers didn’t really overwhelm any of those 3 teams … but we all know how explosive they can be … I think it all comes down to pressuring Rivers a lot – if he has time, he can be deadly … I don’t know if we can do that – our DL is still our biggest weakness … Champ being back will make a lot of difference, but even he can’t overcome no pass rush … I expect our OL to keep doing what it has been doing – protecting Orton for the most part, and improving on their run-blocking … Orton must eliminate his mistakes – they’re mostly mistakes of execution – poor passes when receivers are open, and the occasional brain-dead interception … he makes a lot of GREAT passes, but not at the level of the GREAT ones …

Any way, I think we’ll come out fired up, and the Chargers will suffer some from over-confidence – that’s just the way it will be … whether we can sustain it for 60 minutes will make the difference … however, I’m going out on a limb on a big hunch, and predict a Bronco win in a late close one, one which Orton will finally get the monkey off his back about not being able to come through in the clutch …

      Broncos 24 – Chargers 23 …

    33. papapete says:

I have been on the orton side (only becouse he is the choice of the coach) and I will say this “If we do not put up a good showing this week then it is time to change.” the change is for next year.

    34. CarnageBronc says:

they say we have too many 3 and outs….yet we are in the top 10 in the league on third down percentage….They say the defense is on the field too many plays….15th most…middle of the league….255 plays…same as NO…most teams in teh league are between 250 and 260…they just don’t like Orton or just love Tebow

    35. papapete says:

      correct

    36. Mustang says:

I honestly do not think that Orton is the best QB on the team, Carnage. I do see your point, but I think Orton is getting to much credit because he has a pretty spiral and can hit someone open when the game is lost and the field is open. I am not sure about Tebow, Quinn, or Weber, but I am sure about a few things about Orton…

Orton is a “Game Manager” quarterback. He is not a “Franchise” or “Star” quarterback. A “Game Manager” quarterback is supposed to manage and not turn the ball over. Orton in his primary role as a “Game Manager” turns the ball over at the worst times, thus failing in his role. Orton fails to prolong drives unless there is a prevent defense. A “Game Manager” can consistently move the ball and control the clock. Three and outs do not control the clock.

Frankly, I feel that Tebow and possibly Quinn would be better when behind. We will end up behind too often with our “Game Manager” not managing the game and controlling the clock to keep the defense off the field and rest. At least with Tebow, I do feel like we have a chance of him being the catalyst to atone for an errant interception rather than sulk and do nothing to inspire the players around him.

    37. S.D.Bronco30 says:

      Chargers 31
      Broncos 14

    38. Mustang says:

Three and outs are better this year, yes… I am talking three and outs this year because his three and outs are when they actually matter (read: clutch). Look at the three and out percentage for Orton overall since he has been in Denver. I will give it to you that numbers wise, he is better his year on third downs… but has more turnovers. Those are actually worse since the opponent gets better field position. Orton doesn’t have the capability to rally a team or keep his head up when things go south and they do too often since his arrival in Denver.

    39. Mustang says:

“Thanks to Mark Simon of ESPN Stats and Information, let’s breakdown the numbers:

In the fourth quarter when down by eight points or less, Orton completed 50 percent of his passes, which was the sixth worst percentage in the NFL. He had a passer rating of 51.3, which was the tied for the fifth worst in the league. In general, Orton’s completion percentage and passer rating was higher in the first three quarters than they were in the fourth quarter in 2010.

Orton wasn’t much better on third down in 2010. He completed 50 percent of his passes on third down, which was tied for the eighth worst in the league. His passer rating on third down was 58.0. He threw five interceptions on third down.

A quarterback is defined by his performance in key parts of the game. In 2010, Orton was far from a solid pressure player. ”

    40. HardHitting27 says:

All Defense/Offense/QB who’s at fault stuff aside……… the bottom line is this TEAM, needs and infusion of fresh blood. This infusion is needed in a lot of areas, first QB, we need a leader on the team, one that CAN put the TEAM on his shoulders and carry it when needed. We need new blood in our secondary, Dawkins and Goodwin, aren’t what they used to be. Dawkins at least can still bring it when not asked to cover. Goodwin??? The front 7 are holding their own right now. so, we’ll see. The Oline is a wait and see too, but there’s some players that need to step up consistently. RB, well, Moreno needs to go, good thing we got 23 but that’s a stop gap measure that will need to be replaced soon. WR will need to be looked at too, but right now that appears to be our strongest area.

The reason I started off with the QB, that’s where the leadership is supposed to come from.
Orton= Not getting it done, and is not consistent, so not the answer
Quinn= His track record of the past (Cleveland) is what we’re measuring him by now? We’ve only seen preseason play. Had bright spots. But jury is out on if he can lead?
Tebow= Good college QB. Showed bright and low spots in preseason. Still basically a rookie. Bright spots last year going 1-2. Again though, jury is out.
Weber= no significant playing time so this QB is a non issue.

It’s up to the coaching staff to make the calls. The way Fox is calling it though is old school and it seems like he doesn’t want to adjust and be flexible. May need fresh blood here too. But I’m willing to wait and see here. I was happy with the signing of the HC. Right now I’m not filled with confidence in the HC but I believe he can do it.

      Go Broncos!!!

    41. baylinorcrush says:

      Back on solid ground!

      Well sort of, haha.

      I mean, not here, LOL.

      Me on solid ground literally.

Man I should know betterr than taking any time off smack in the middle of the season, it took me hours to get through all the blogs and posts of the last three days to gather all the predictions, but mission accomplished and whatever you guys have been fed on here while I was gone must of been washed down with a mouth full of Orange kool aid because so far we have 23 bloggers predicting us to beat the Chargers and only 10 losing to them!!!

      What happened???

      What did I miss??

      Just kidding, LOL.

Anyhow as far as predictions are concerned there was a blogger a thousand post ago or so and I can’t remember his handle who predicted this particular score if something happened and a totally different score if it didn’t, well sorry buddy but if you want in you gotta make up your mind one way and one way only and go with only one score.

      dchale,

no way I’m taking your prediction of an 80-0 Bronco win or I would make a mockery of our little in-house contest, so if you want in predict a NFL football score and leave the sarcasm out of it thanks.

      Royalty,

glad I could give you a belly laugh the other day, squirrels never rest…

      shaztah,

      thanks for the kind word.

I see my QQ is alive and well and I am not needed to let it fester among you friends, LMAO.

      GO BRONCOS!!!

Just like the first game against the Raiders could turn out being one the most important game of our season even so many laughed me off on that assumption of mine, this one is now the most important once again:

      Division game.

      At home.

      0-1 in the division.

      1-3 overall.

And then a whole bye week to reflect on whatever the outcome is.

Talk about a crappy week off coming up, or a real good one!

      Daunting prospect.

      Mega size pressure.

We’ll see the true color of this team, because as most of you now think reading these blogs and your predictions, it’s winnable since the Chargers are just a shadow of how good they once were, time to put up or shut up is what’s pretty much at stake here.

BIG, BIG, BIG game indeed on Sunday, don’t miss it, LOL.

    42. The Dane says:

      Prediction:

      Broncos: 20

      Chargers: 27

    43. HardHitting27 says:

I’m thinking this week we lose again( and I am tossed, I want the win, but don’t want more Orton mediocrity, I don’t want to lose, as I always root for the win, but with a loss we may see some changes).

      Final score
      Chargers 23
      Broncos 15

Our offense will be FGs by Prater only. Orton will be good between the 20s but not lead to any TDs.
Our D will hold strong but give up 2 TDs but will bend not break in the 3 FGs.

The half time score will be SD-10 DEN-6

    44. 1nOnlyTRB says:

The D is not Good but neither is Orton … the only difference is that we are not in denial of the D … but alot are when it comes to Orton … because its always everythings fault but Orton.

Fact remains alot of things went down to help us lose

Pick 6 that swong momentum thier way when we were just 7-3 … and no it wasnt the wrong route … it was the right rough … Decker just said he could run his routes better but Decker is a stud route runner just trying not ot assign blame. He was baited by Woodson plain and simple.

And then they come out and get an onside … well not much to do abou that … send the D back unto the field.

We get back in range but by the time the half ends and they finish thier drive again … we are down big. Fells hurts us true … but then Wilhite gets an INT … we are pretty out of it but we can still reduce the damage … the very first throw after wilhites INT …. is an INT by Orton which was UNDER THROWN … and u said it ur self during the game SNDVL

And then the final INT was just fluke.

But not just the INTs … he also under threw … ALOT … the whole team is not good true … but Orton is part of the suckitude in the whole team. Its not just the supporting cast … a Good QB can winn with an avg cast … maybe not the superbowl but take a team deep … ask elway.

Orton sucks … plain and simple … but he is our QB for now … Both of which are facts that are not worth arguing over. And sure we didn’t stop their High Powered O but incase you haven’t noticed … not just us … no team has been able to truly stop them yet. TRB

    45. HardHitting27 says:

      Expectations vs. Realizations

We expect to score everytime the O gets the ball or at least sustain a drive beyond 3 and out. The realization we can’t score all the time.

Orton has, unfortunately, set the expection to be a 3 and out more often than not. And he makes it a realization.

With D, we expect some flaws. The realization, we know we have them. The D, however, is setting the expectation to not break more often than giving up points (exception last weeks game vs GB.)

    46. lsustar24 says:

I am new the blogs here. I live in Houston, Tx and I am a huge Broncos fan. I have never lived in Colorado but still love the Broncos. I have been a fan since ’84.

This message for all you football or sports challenged people. You know the people who keeps saying our defense sucks. This is not a bad defense. The problem is that our offense can’t stay on the field!

For example. there was a stretch during the Raiders game where the defense was on the field for 45+ mins straight. The only break they got was when Decker ran back that kick return for a touchdown. Then they were back on the field.

I don’t care if you’re the ’85 Bears, if you’re on the field for 45 straight mins, you are gonna get tired. Then every member of your defense is gonna lose a step. Then in the end, you are gonna look like you suck. When you’re that tired, it is hard for you to stop the opposing offense and then you can’t get off the field on 3rd downs. you wait and see when our offense starts scoring points the defense will look unbelievable!

Also, for all those Orton lovers, Orton Sucks. The only place he had a winning record was at Chicago and he only had wins because their defense was so good. He only had to score 10-14 ppg to get a win.

Tim Tebow, so far that I have seen, is the closest thing to John Elway. If we build a team around him, he could one of the all time greats. I truly believe that due to intensity and will to win. Noone works harder than he does to get better.
