Broncos vs. Chargers Series History

November 25th, 2011 - 9:14am by Stuart Zaas

Denver and San Diego will meet for the 104th time on Sunday, marking the most common regular-season matchup for the Broncos. All-time, Denver is 54-48-1, including a 19-32 record on the road against San Diego.

When the teams played one another for the first time, the Chargers franchise was still located in Los Angeles. The Chargers won that game 23-19 on Oct. 16, 1960 in Denver. The matchups have remained close throughout the teams’ history as the Chargers average 21.9 points per game to the Broncos’ 21.1 in the series.

Earlier this season, the Chargers defeated the Broncos 29-24 on Oct. 9 in Denver. Tim Tebow took over the quarterback position following a 23-10 halftime deficit and led the Broncos to within a two-point conversion of overtime before San Diego tacked on a field goal in the game’s final seconds.

Denver hopes to end a four-game losing streak to San Diego, having last won 34-23 on Oct., 19, 2009 in San Diego.

Notable performances against the Chargers:

  • CB Champ Bailey: In 15 games vs. San Diego, Bailey has totaled 78 tackles to go with four interceptions (one touchdown), one forced fumble, one fumble recovery and 15 pass breakups.
  • DE Elvis Dumervil: Made five tackles and two sacks with one forced fumble at San Diego (10/19/09).
  • WR Eddie Royal became just the second Bronco and 11th player in NFL history to return a punt (71 yds.) and a kickoff (93 yds.) for a score in the same game at S.D. (10/19/09).
  • CB André Goodman: Posted the lone sack of his NFL career at San Diego (10/19/09).
  • S Brian Dawkins: Forced four fumbles in six career games against the Chargers.
  • WR Eric Decker caught his first career touchdown pass vs. San Diego (1/2/11).
  • Denver-San Diego Roster Connections
Some interesting roster connections between the Broncos and Chargers courtesy of research done by Public Relations Intern Cydney Ricker:

  • Broncos Head Coach John Fox coached the Chargers’ secondary in 1992 and ’93.
  • San Diego Secondary Coach Steve Wilks coached the defensive backs at Notre Dame during S David Bruton’s sophomore season.
  • Chargers WR Vincent Jackson hails from Colorado Springs, Colo. and played four seasons at the University of Northern Colorado.
  • San Diego TE Kory Sperry is from Vineland, Colo. and attended Colorado State University.

Yes, I know, I`ll live with it.

Now the over/under line is set at 42 points, so your score is the overs.

    3. strandoftds says:

      I`m cutting it close.

Good for you Royalty, a music producer boxing champ, neat stuff.

Welcome STC. Bay, I didn’t miss the return. I knew it was him once I saw his clever handle with the biblical reference and read his trademark “Your mom…” post. By the time I read through all the posts you’d already called him out. I was willing to let him stick around if he kept from being derragatory. But it looks like either he’s laying low or Gray Caldwell read your post and banned him again. Pretty relaxing day here, we hung up some Christmas lights and I already had my first turkey sandwich of the season. Hopefully I get to catch the game on Sunday, before I make the trip back. We’re about three hours away from Kansas City so I’m hoping they’ll show it considering it’s a division game. My parents have satelite (and no Sunday Ticket) so I’m not sure. Hoping to see us beat the Chargers for the first time in ages. I think we’re going to be crushing their o-line quite a bit, and knowing Tim he’s not gonna let the Chargers beat him 3 times in a row (well, tow and a half). Bronc on and I hope everyone enjoyed their thanksgiving as much as I did!

    6. killerkod says:

      Von will be chanting……….

Down goes Rivers………..Down goes Rivers! haha

    7. baylinorcrush says:

I’m thinking I’ll be in the slightly unders, that’s about as much as I’ll say now, Royalty is listening, LOL.

    8. ScalptheChiefs says:

Thanks BB&R I really should get to pulling out all the christmas decorations myself!

    9. strandoftds says:

And in those good ole days we heard the familiar voice of Howard Cosell. That also brings back the ealy days of MNF. HaHa!! (This Is Howard Cosell)!

    10. strandoftds says:

      LOL Bay.

    11. Bronco_Turtle says:

      Nice… My prediction = 43… Over/Under 42…

I’m feeling good Bay… Thanks for the info on the line, since I moved back to Wyoming from Vegas over a year ago I don’t do any sports betting and hardly follow the lines… I made my prediction, as you know, over a week ago (prematurally! :o )

Von will have a big game, and seeing how the D put all three of there running backs down last time, and they are minus one to start with (Matthews) we may have them passing early and often which I know is there strength, but it’s our strength too (pass rush)…

Blah… what I’m saying is GET TO SUNDAY already… I’m going nuts!!!

      FTC

    12. royalbroncofan1 says:

Yeah, I went high thinking we can possibly get a pick 6 and set up a couple more with special teams, and you’re right bay…..the run game.

I also think our D will wreck havoc on Rivers this weekend. Bolts have a few backups on the O-line and I think we’re going to expose them and unleash some more Von – Doom… lol!

    13. Bronco_Turtle says:

      *their

    14. strandoftds says:

      Good call Royal, Von-Doom!

    15. baylinorcrush says:

Hung up all my outdoor Christmas lights this am as well.

Actually e-mailed Gray just to make him aware so he could keep an eye on the situation and he said he would which makes me feel better, I mean as long as the man is respecting of others and does it in a civil sort of way, all is cool, the ball is in his court.

Everyone ever posting should always remember that we have some 12 year olds on here, and that should be enough to keep this a clean Bronco family affair.

    16. killerkod says:

and some that act like 5 year olds…………..lmao

    17. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Lol bay. I feel like I’ve lost grasp of the scoring comp. Tebow is just so unpredictable, I can just feel myself slipping away. Hey, at least I held second place during the bye week giving me a sense of being on the podium for longer, albeit a false sense lol.

    18. strandoftds says:

      Absolutely. Keep it clean.

    19. royalbroncofan1 says:

Anyone remember when the Bills beat the Dolphins on a Monday night, and Dandy Don and Gifford ask Cosell what he thought of the game.

Cosell – “Well Miami’s got the oranges, but Buffalo’s got the juice”!! LOL!

      (reference O.J. Simpson).

    20. baylinorcrush says:

You’re still up there Royalty in 6th place, I’m 16th, LOL.

    21. Bronco_Turtle says:

      ***Extra Extra***

Tebow passes for 300 and a touch, runs for 150 and two touches, the Broncos win Big…

VON TEBOW FOOTBALL is alive and well in the metro area… Elway coming around to the real GROUND AND POUND that Sexxy Rexxy so desperately desires… (He already plotting a Sanchez for Tebow Trade, my Turtle sense is tingling)

Head Coach John Fox awakens and realizes he is not in a ‘Wet’ dream, and really does have a legit ‘running’ qb in this type of offense that has just enough gun slinger to keep 8 out of the box…

      ***Extra Extra***

(thank Jeebus that LSU/ARKANSAS just started… I was starting to come out of my Shell…)

    22. strandoftds says:

Is calling someone like him a fruitcake keeping it clean? LOL!

    23. baylinorcrush says:

I mean you are in 5th place.

    24. strandoftds says:

I`m still in the basement. LOL

    25. Bronco_Turtle says:

Bay? who won the prediction game vs the Lions?

    26. strandoftds says:

Cosell was one of a kind.

    27. baylinorcrush says:

It was timmah, had us losing 17-35.

    28. ScalptheChiefs says:

100% agree I am a parent as I’m sure many of you are and I’ll definitely keep it clean!

I am really pumped to participate in the contest next year. I got the rundown when Bay reposted the rules a few blogs ago. I’m going to play for the rest of this year but I want a shot at the title!!!

    29. baylinorcrush says:

Is there such a thing as under a basement? LOL.

    30. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Yeah 5th lol I was already thinking what game did I miss lol and sorry for the slow responses it sucks typing on this iPod.

    31. killerkod says:

      turtle…………where does this happen?

      Madden 12? lol

    32. killerkod says:

      crawlspace?

    33. Bronco_Turtle says:

Thanks Bay! I’m just hoping to get on the board before seasons end! I don’t know that I will ever actually predict a loss though… I’m torn really, the sports gambler in me never allowed myself to bet on Bronco Games, too much bias… but in ’08 when the Pats were covering 57 point over/unders on their own (Redskins game) I made a bundle!!! as I think most casual sports bettors did…

    34. Bronco_Turtle says:

In my happy place Kod!!! in my Happy Place… ;o)

      FTC SOOOO HARD!!!!

    35. Bronco_Turtle says:

If you guys have a chance, please watch the football game today with special attention paid to Wilson, the QB from Arkansas… many pro prospects in this game, but Wilson has pro-level skills…

I would not mind spending a rd 3 pick on a guy like this as he stands in my mind today… his stock could go either way, but today will be a good chance to see him against a good pressure D… He stood in and made plays against Bama, even though they lost that game…!!!

    36. Bronco_Turtle says:

      :o ) This is funny…

Guys it’s great to go on here and get the perspectives from different points of views… I believe mostly credible and then to read the other things discussed like boxing. I really enjoy knowing what my Bronco brothers think and reflect on. Always puts a smile on my face.

My dad was a boxer and put my brother and I in boxing growing up. Joe Luis was one of his favorites. Back then the gloves went up to my elbows almost. I got to meet Lyle Alzado and Rob Lyle at one of my smokers. Pretty cool. Until the ninth grade when it was just too much, and I wanted to play football more.

    38. strandoftds says:

Isn`t there someone this year whos hit the WOS twice? God, I hope not. LOL

    39. ScalptheChiefs says:

lol I hope I never make that list.

    40. killerkod says:

don’t drink too much orange kool aid STC and you should be fine! haha

    41. ScalptheChiefs says:

LMAO very good point, although I do always seem to have a rather large jug of it every sunday. (and last thursday) lol

    42. Bronco_Turtle says:

For all you tried and true Bronco fans… that hit looked very Atwater-esque… He did play at Arkansas remember!

    43. baylinorcrush says:

Yah, who else but Carnage, but he got 4 points once so he is -6, still dead last overall, you’re just one spot above strand, with quite a few other fellow WOS, LOL.

    44. Bronco_Turtle says:

And as for the Cool-Aid STC, don’t just drink it… Savor it, Sip it, Gulp it, Slurp it! Just get as much as you can while the gettings good! Cause when the Broncos lose a game the haters will come out of the woodwork…!!!

Let them come, this team will be great for years to come if they continue to add young talent!!!

      VON TEBOW FOOTBALL!!!

    45. ScalptheChiefs says:

Oh I do brother!! You should have seen me with the 6-0 start lol. There will always be haters, but I really believe in the future of this team! So happy I grabbed my orange Miller jersey in preseason, I cant get a reasonably priced Doom jersey but thats definitely next. That would bring my Bronco jersey total to 10

    46. The Dane says:

      Prediction:

      Broncos: 20

      Chargers: 23

    47. armadillo_orton says:

      Prediction:

      Broncos 27

      Chargers 24.

Tebow; 18-30 210 yards, 105 yards rushing 1 rushing TD, 2 passing tds.

The way I would like us to win is to go spread for 75% of the game. With V. Jackson starting to click, and with Gates & the young V. Brown, our DB’s will have their hands full. We need to score a TD first & have a Rivers turnover early to keep the crowd out of the game.
However there is another way.. More stressful way for us to win. Chargers go up by 10 in the late 2nd qtr or early 3rd. This allows Norv to go semi conservative and sit on the lead (like he always does). This then allows us to sneek back in on a Tebow TD followed by a game winning Prater field goal.

    48. strandoftds says:

If I can score just once this year in the positive, that would make my day. It comes in bunches. LOL
