Broncos vs. Chargers: Second Half Blog

October 9th, 2011 - 3:53pm by Gray Caldwell

HALFTIME: The Broncos are honoring breast cancer survivors on the field during halftime. San Diego will receive to start the second half.

Q3 15:00: After a touchback, Ryan Mathews picks up 2 yards on first down, and Philip Rivers scrambles for 6 more on second down. That makes it third-and-2 at the 28-yard line, and Rivers hits Patrick Crayton for a first down. On the ensuing first down, Rivers finds Randy McMichael, who is brought down by Quinton Carter after a 7-yard gain. Mathews is wrapped up for no gain by Robert Ayers on the next play. Mathews picks up 2 yards to set up third-and-1, then picks up 2 more for a first down at the San Diego 49-yard line.

Q3 10:45: On the ensuing first down, Joe Mays nearly picks up a sack, but D.J. Williams and Marcus Thomas finish off Rivers, dropping him for an 8-yard loss. That makes it second-and-12, and the ball slips out of Rivers’ hands for a fumble. The quarterback sprints back to fall on the ball, and Ayers is there to fall on him and set up third-and-35. Jacob Hester takes a carry on the next play, picking up 10 yards. Mike Scifres is in to punt to the waiting Quan Cosby, who grabs the ball at the 10 and finds room to the 30-yard line.

Q3 8:54: Tim Tebow is now in at quarterback, looking at first-and-10 at his own 31-yard line.

INJURY REPORT: San Diego running back Mike Tolbert has a concussion and will not return.

Q3 8:53: Willis McGahee takes a carry on first down, picking up 5 yards. On second down, Tebow bobbles the snap but gets it off to McGahee, who is dropped behind the line of scrimmage. That brings up third-and-8 at the 33-yard line. Tebow is in the shotgun. He takes the snap and hits Eric Decker at the line of scrimmage, but the receiver is dropped quickly for no gain. Britton Colquitt is in to punt to Crayton. The returner is dropped at the 20-yard line, where the Chargers will take over.

Q3 6:59: Mathews picks up 2 yards on first down, but picks up about 11 more on second down to grab a first down at the 33-yard line. Rivers hits Vincent Jackson for another first down at the San Diego 47-yard line. The ensuing first down brings a run by Mathews, who picks up 2 yards. On second down, Champ Bailey comes blitzing in from cornerback, and Rivers is forced to roll out and throw the ball away. That makes it third-and-8, and Rivers’ pass is nearly intercepted by Cassius Vaughn for the second time this afternoon, but it’s ruled incomplete. Scifres is in to punt again, and Cosby is back deep to receive. He calls for a fair catch and is run into by a Chargers gunner, but there’s no flag. Denver has the ball at the 7-yard line.

Q3 3:56: First down brings another run by McGahee, and the back picks up a quick 3 yards. On second down, Tebow throws down the sideline to Brandon Lloyd, who brings in the pass, but the refs rule he was out of bounds and it’s therefore incomplete. On third down, Tebow is in the shotgun. He takes the snap, scrambles around in the backfield and fires deep to Eric Decker, who found his way wide open behind his defender. But the receiver can’t bring in the pass as he dives nearly midfield. Colquitt is in to punt again, and the returner, Crayton, is brought down at his own 37-yard line.

Q3 2:48: Mathews takes a carry for a yard before being stopped by Joe Mays. On second down, Mathews is stopped again, this time at the line of scrimmage for no gain. That brings up third-and-9, and Rivers is in the shotgun. He finds McMichael for a first down at midfield.

Q3 0:40: On first down, Mathews finds a hole and leaves his feet to try to jump over a defender, but he’s hit by Champ Bailey, who forces a fumble that is recovered by Mays. It was a 6-yard gain and there’s no return on the fumble, so Denver has a first down at its own 44-yard line.

Q3 0:39: The Chargers challenged the ruling on the field — and it’s determined that Mathews was down by contact before the fumble, and San Diego now has the ball again with a second-and-4. Rivers hits Hester on a pass for a first down at the 40-yard line on the next play as the third quarter comes to a close.

Q4 15:00: Mathews takes the first-down carry for 3 yards. On second down, Mathews takes a pitch and picks up 3 more yards, setting up third-and-4. Rivers tries to hit Jackson over the middle, but Champ Bailey was having none of it, knocking away the pass and shaking his head as he jogs to the sideline. Nick Novak is in to attempt a 51-yard field goal — and it’s good.

Q4 13:35: After a touchback, Tebow and the offense take over at the 20-yard line. On first down, Tebow looks for Dante Rosario, but the tight end can’t haul in the pass. There’s a Charger down after the play — I believe it’s Shaun Phillips.

Q4 13:29: On second-and-10, Tebow is in the shotgun. He hands off to Willis McGahee, who finds a hole for 12 yards and a first down at the 32-yard line. McGahee gets another carry on the ensuing play, and he’s stopped after a gain of a yard. It’s a fake handoff on second down, and Tebow scrambles for a 5-yard gain. That brings up third-and-4, and Tebow is in the shotgun. He rolls left and throws low to Willis for an incompletion. Colquitt is in to punt again, and he booms it to the 10-yard line.

Q4 11:33: On first down for the Chargers, Mathews gets another carry and picks up 11 yards for a first down. It’s Mathews again on the next play, but he’s dropped after a gain of 1. The running back limps off the field after the play. On second-and-9, Rivers hits McMichael for a 4-yard gain. Now third-and-5, Rivers is sacked by Von Miller. That’s his fourth consecutive game with at least one sack — and his fifth quarterback takedown of the season. Scifres is in to punt for the Chargers, and Cosby returns it to near midfield.

Q4 8:34: On first down, McGahee finds a big hole for a 28-yard gain, and he’s got his third 100-yard rushing game of the season. He’s at 120 yards on the day. On the next play it’s Tebow with the run — he scrambles to the sideline and picks up the first down at the 12-yard line. On first-and-10, Antonio Garay bursts through the line to break up a play at the line of scrimmage. It’s now second-and-10, and Tebow is in the shotgun. It’s a designed quarterback draw, and Tebow sprints 12 yards for the touchdown. The crowd is fired up as the Broncos are going for two to make it a one-score game. Tebow is in the shotgun, and he gives it to McGahee, who continues his big day, diving into the end zone for the conversion before giving the crowd a Mile High Salute.

Q4 6:35: After Prater’s kick goes through the end zone, San Diego takes over at the 20. On first down, Rivers completes to Jackson for 9 yards. Hester runs for no gain on second down. On third-and-short, Rivers sneaks for first down yardage. On the ensuing first down, Rivers is swarmed in the pocket but gets the ball out for an incomplete. Denver is challenging the ruling that the pass is incomplete, believing it was a fumble by Rivers.

Q4 4:38: After review, the call on the field is overturned and the play is ruled a fumble recovered by Denver. Tebow and Broncos offense takes over at the San Diego 41-yard line.

Q4 4:34: Tebow runs right for 8 yards on first down. On second down McGahee picks his way up the middle for 5 yards and a new set of downs. Tebow then completes a screen pass under pressure to Moreno, who sprints into the end zone for the 28-yard score. The offense is on the field to attempt a 2-point try. Denver calls a timeout.

Q4 3:19: The 2-point conversion is no good as Tebow’s pass for Lloyd falls incomplete.

CHARGERS 26, BRONCOS 24

Q4 3:18: The kickoff goes for a touchback and the Chargers start at their 20. On first down, Rivers is hurried by the blitz up the gut and throws incomplete. On second down, Rivers throws intended for Floyd and it’s broken up by Goodman. On third-and-10, Rivers completes to Floyd for a 38-yard gain. Denver calls timeout (1 remaining).

Q4 2:51: On first down, Hester runs for 2 yards and the Broncos call their final timeout.

Q4 2:46: On second down, Rivers pitches to Hester for a short gain but the Broncos are called for unnecessary roughness, giving San Diego a first down at the Denver 22-yard line. Hester then runs left on first down and is stopped for no gain. That brings us to the 2-minute warning.

Q4 1:59: On second down, Hester runs up the middle for 3 yards. On third-and-seven from the Denver 19-yard line, Hester runs left and is stopped after a short gain. San Diego calls timeout as the play clock winds down. Novack hits the field goal try from 35 yards out. 24 seconds remain.

CHARGERS 29, BRONCOS 24

Q4 0:24: Denver takes over at the 20 after a touchback.

Q4 0:19: After review, Tebow’s first down pass to Lloyd is ruled a catch and a 20-yard gain down the right sideline. On second down, Tebow completes deep down the middle to Fells for a 31-yard gain. Tebow then stops the clock with a spike. San Diego calls their second timeout. Denver has the ball at the San Diego 29-yard line with 1 second left.

Q4 0:01: After scrambling to keep the play alive, Tebow’s pass falls incomplete in the end zone and the game is over.

I bet Von Miller gets rookie of the year on D.

  2. denver0723 says:

4 games in a row. Didn’t have one against Oakland, but he has been a sack machine ever since!

  3. randy2191 says:

4 straight games and 5 sacks.. on pace for 16 and the rookie record.. sounds good

  4. strandoftds says:

What is the rookie record for sacks anyway?

  5. jsizzla says:

Is Andrew Luck gonna pan out? I mean how many times have we heard this song and dance before? Matt Leinhart–terrible. Preseason Colt McCoy best qb in 2010 draft–haven’t heard much from him this season. The list goes on and on until one proves in a game. I remember Romo’s first start, he got called in the middle of a cowboy’s game I don’t know if bledsoe got hurt or who was qb and the crowd was chanting his name and his first pass was a pick 6. He’s been their starter ever since.

  6. randy2191 says:

    14.5 held by javon kearse

  7. strandoftds says:

Andrew Luck will be a rising star in the NFL!!

  8. strandoftds says:

    Thanks Randy.

  9. strandoftds says:

I`d like to see Von get 20 sacks.

  10. Atwater4HOF says:

I remember one Standford QB stud who panned out…

I think his name was Elway

Nah but I understand your point, the last few QBs taken top overall have panned out though. Stafford, Bradford, Freeman, Flacco, Ryan. Sanchez is awful but that’s the exception of late

  11. randy2191 says:

isnt the record for sacks like 21 or 21.5 by strahan(sp?)

  12. jsizzla says:

Your sure about that strand? I mean he’s good but sometimes the pro game doesn’t matter even if you are LUCKy.. You have to adapt, improvise and overcome..

  13. Atwater4HOF says:

    Stanford*** My bad

  14. strandoftds says:

I think it is with DeMarcus Ware with 22 now.

  15. strandoftds says:

He looks like Manning or Elway to me. He throws darts on the money most of the time.

  16. randy2191 says:

no ware best was 20 in 2008 just short of the record

  17. Atwater4HOF says:

He is very mobile too. Much more than he is given credit for. LOVE the kid

If we get the chance to draft him it means that Tebow didn’t pan out and we have the number 1 pick. So there is zero chance that we would pass on him if the opportunity presented itself

  18. strandoftds says:

Dan Morino too but Morino dosn`t scramble, Luck does.

  19. jsizzla says:

Ok, so he’s great, but Tebow still gets his chance with first teamers for almost a full season..

  20. strandoftds says:

    Hmmmm, OK. My mistake.

  21. Atwater4HOF says:

I hope Tebow does pan out. It’d give us the chance to draft Marcus Lattimore lol

  22. strandoftds says:

    ooops, Dan Marino. Duh!

  23. jsizzla says:

I don’t think we’re going to be the worst team this year so we should concentrate on a DT or CB 1st pick in the draft!!

  24. randy2191 says:

its strahan with 22.5 followed by gastineau with 22 and reggie white and chris doleman with 21 LT with 20.5 and ware and derrick thomas with 20… thats the small 20 club id love for von to get there his rookie year

  25. strandoftds says:

I`d like to draft the RB from Oregon, Lamichael James. He`ll run over defenses.

  26. jsizzla says:

Von Miller—great first pick for Fox, next Julius Peppers. Legendary player.!!

  27. strandoftds says:

That would be a nice club to join, the 20`s sack club. Von would be legend.

  28. Atwater4HOF says:

I like James too. He is just more of a scat back while Lattimore is a bulldozer

  29. jsizzla says:

LaMichael James will never run over a defense, maybe by them because he’s fast, but never over them because he’s too small (ask LSU). Good try though. I’ll take him too.

  30. randy2191 says:

i say we need DT or CB 1st the other 2nd 3rd RB the 4th DT/DE the 5th CB 6th WR 7th OL

  31. Atwater4HOF says:

Who knows what we’ll need come April

  32. randy2191 says:

    thats our need right now!!

  33. Atwater4HOF says:

True, free agency and injuries and whatnot will obviously play a big part in it come April.

DT wise I actually really like Bunkley.

  34. socalbigbroncofan says:

I think we would have done better if we start tebow so our d would had some rest. When Orton goes 3 and out or turn the football over no rest for the d. They still did good though.

  35. jsizzla says:

Our D has impressed me. The chargers are a good offense and we held our own considering.! Last year it was big play after big play after big run!! It was frustrating.

  36. jsizzla says:

Trent Richardson from Bama would be a nice pick for us too.

  37. strandoftds says:

Richardson is awesome also. I know nothing of Lattimore. I haven`t heard of him. He`s a big back Huh?

  38. 88Odoms says:

Tebow hasnt gotten to practice with starters all year, he was thrown into the fire and it only took him a quarter to adapt and play with his heart, give him the six or so years Orton had to win and then bash him if you dont like him….he technically has 3.5 games under his belt and he sparked everyone on the team and the chargers even started to worry they might lose at the end lol…havent seen anyone ever fear Orton, sorry Orton Im not a basher but the facts are the facts.

  39. Atwater4HOF says:

Yea Lattimore is a stud. He’ll be the first RB off the board if he comes out. He’s a Sophomore out of South Carolina.

  40. Atwater4HOF says:

    6ft tall 235lbs. He’s similar to Richardson

  41. strandoftds says:

By NCaa rules and NFL rules a Sophomore can not enter into the NFL. It`s not gonna happen.

  42. Atwater4HOF says:

Oh that’s right, 3 years out of high school now. Seems like a silly rule to me but yea that would take him out of the draft for next year

  43. strandoftds says:

I`ll take Richardson. I have no problem with that. We need a young plugger up the middle type of RB to complement McGahee.

  44. roya1fantasy says:

Tebow did come in and give us a spark..given… But do any of you think that from before Ortons first snap to the last Orton snap the whole Crowed was booing him had anything to do with him not playing well. I am Tebow supporter but also i will support anyone who is on the field. .. Orton will be better off going to a team that needs him and Fans that will cheer for him, we can see how well he does then.
    ..
ALso, You all do know that CB and DL is not going to be our biggest concern…Saftey is… because Dawkins will most likely be done. and no one that we have to replace him has shown anything halfway decent.

I think our D line is pretty good, I like bunkley, Doom…Even Ayers started showing a little spark when he has been out there. Actually it seems like the whole team plays better Under coach FOX. it’s like Mc D was not getting the best out of them. Fox knows how to get the best out these players.

I am excited for the future

    Go Broncos!!

  45. blwalk01 says:

We need Moreno to play to his potential and stay healthy so we can draft DEFENSE again ….. although i would love to see Blackmon from Oklahoma State BIG receiver …… to early for draft talk though

  46. roya1fantasy says:

Also, did yo know that when Bunkley was with the eagles he could bench more than anyone on that team.

    just thought that was cool

  47. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

I’m back… last post I had read before I left was someone, sdnvl I think, asking what bay meant by using the term: “eat dirt.” Saying: “I know what eat crow means but eat dirt?”

On the Apple dictionary it gives these meanings for those euphemisms:

    Eat dirt informal
Suffer insults or humiliation : the film bombed at the box office and the critics made it eat dirt.

    Eat crow informal
Be humiliated by having to admit one’s defeats or mistakes.

  48. mx310 says:

Tebow needs to begin starting with the first team, and the next 2 weeks needs to be about how to win with him–I know its been said before, but it really is the best way for us to win, going forward. Go Broncos!

  49. BeastFromEast92 says:

Trent Richardson is superior to Lattimore, plus Richardson is a Heisman candidate,I watch a lot of SEC football,so I know the facts!!! Don’t get me wrong,Lattimore is a Beast!!!!

BTW…Glad Fox finally had the guts to play Tebow,we might have won the game if he had started…….Tebow the rest of the season!!!

  50. strandoftds says:

BFE, It`s Hear, It`s Tebow Time Bro!!
