Broncos vs. Buccaneers: Second Quarter Notes

October 5th, 2008 - 2:40pm by Adam Zinser

15:00: It’s still unclear if Denver will go for it, punt or attempt a long field goal. From here, it would be a 54-yard field goal attempt.

Matt Prater comes out onto the field to attempt what is actually a 55-yard field goal from the left hash, and it’s good.

The Broncos have tied it up, 3-3.

14:56: Prater kicks off, and it goes through the endzone for the touchback.

14:00: It’s third-and-seven after a short run by Dunn. Griese finds Clayton across the middle, and he’s taken down by Boss Bailey after an eight-yard gain just past the first-down marker.

13:30: Griese is sacked by Ebenezer Ekuban for an eight-yard loss.

12:46: A delay of game penalty has backed the Bucs up further. Tampa Bay faces a second-and-23 from their own 18.

12:00: Champ Bailey upends Graham on a short pass play, and it’s third-and-very long. Dunn takes a handoff up the middle for a gain of seven, but now the Bucs are forced to punt.

11:00: Royal fields the punt deep in Denver territory and is able to move it out five yards to the 12.

10:58: Cutler fires very deep down the middle for Royal, but it’s just barely out of reach. Royal wants a flag for interference but doesn’t get one.

The fans are booing after seeing the replay — they too wanted a flag.

10:20: It’s third-and-nine after a short pass play to Young. Cutler’s in the shotgun, and he runs again and gets tripped up, falling just short of the first-down marker.

Kern comes out to punt again — hold that.

The fans are booing after watching the replay, feeling that the refs gave a bad spot.

Cutler and Shanahan both feel the spot was incorrect, and Shanahan has challenged the spot of the ball on the play.

9:27: After review, the ruling on the field stands. Kern will punt.

Jackson is run out of bounds by Vernon Fox after a 12-yard return. The Bucs have the ball at their own 41.

8:20: It’s third-and-three after a pair of runs by Graham. Griese is very nearly sacked again, but he fires down the middle to Clayton, completing the pass. A holding penalty negates the play though, backing the Bucs up 10 yards.

7:44: Third-and-12: Elvis Dumervil comes off the left end and sacks Griese.

7:20: Josh Bidwell punts away for the Bucs, booming a 50-yarder. Royal fields it and returns it 20 yards, setting up the Broncos at their own 36.

7:09: On the last offensive drive with his last run, Cutler took fifth place in rushing yards among Broncos quarterbacks.

6:45: Cutler finds Daniel Graham open down the middle for 10 yards and a first down.

5:30: Cutler fires high down the left hash, and Marshall goes up high to haul it in for a 13-yard gain and a first down. The Broncos have moved into Tampa Bay Territory.

5:00: The Broncos move the chains quickly, getting another first down on an 11-yard screen pass to Hall.

4:08: A personal foul for a chop block on Hall moves the Broncos back 15 yards. It’s now first-and-25 at the Tampa Bay 43.

Hall gets some of it back on the ensuing play, picking up nine yards on a handoff up the middle.

3:00: Then Hall is called for a hold on the next play, and Hall is clearly upset by the call, as is Cutler. Now it’s second-and-26 from the Tampa Bay 44.

2:25: It’s third-and-19 from the 37 after a short pass to Royal. Cutler hits Pittman on a screen, and he picks up 15 yards, bringing up fourth-and-four. Prater comes out to attempt a 40-yarder.

Prater’s kick is good, splitting the uprights, and the Broncos take their first lead of the day, 6-3.

2:21: Jackson back deep to receive for the Bucs. He fields it in the back of the endzone and takes a knee for the touchback. First-and-10, Tampa Bay, at their own 20.

2:21: It’s first-and-five at the 25 after an encroachment penalty on Denver. Dunn takes a handoff up the middle and spins out of a couple tackles for a 13-yard gain. And that brings us to the two-minute warning.

John Elway and Gary Zimmerman are on the sidelines near the Broncos bench.

2:00: Griese complete to Dunn for four yards, and the Bucs are in the hurry-up offense.

1:10: The Bucs take their second timeout as Dunn carries the ball three yards before being taken down by D.J. Williams at midfield.

Griese’s pass for Antonio Bryant broken up by Marquand Manuel, and it’s second-and-10 at the 50.

0:45: Griese from the shotgun finds Bryant at the Denver 30, and the Bucs run up to the line to spike the ball.

0:23: Griese complete to Clayton on the right sideline, and he’s knocked out of bounds by Champ Bailey after a gain of 12. First-and-10 at the 17.

0:03: After a Dunn run is stopped by Nate Webster in-bounds, the Bucs let the clock tick down and call their last timeout.

Bryant comes out to attempt a 31-yard field goal, and the kick is good. It’s all tied up, 6-6, at halftime.

  15. vegasbronco42 says:

Aaaaaand, I am late joining today, but how great is it that Miami beat SD? Now our Broncs need to capitalize and win this one….

  16. navy_bronco_fan says:

the chop block call was pretty ticky-tack if you ask me

  17. navy_bronco_fan says:

have you tried stoogetv.com for a tv link?

  18. KoobLis says:

I don’t know guys, I don’t quite like how this game is going.. The 3-man rush thing isn’t really working.. Our defense always breaks in the 2nd half and our offense isn’t going anywhere..

  19. KoobLis says:

Also, one more thing; the officials must be pissed about ed hochuli’s call for us hu..? It seems like they’re targetting us for every small thing.. Like that guy that threw the flag against Andre Hall’s holding all the way from across the field THAT WASN’T EVEN A HOLDING CALL!!

  20. navy_bronco_fan says:

well, hey, they’ve managed to get some pressure on Griese (even some SACKS) and there’s no way the offense doesn’t get it going……plus the last drive was killed by a VERY ticky-tack chop block call…………i’m not sweatin’ it too much yet………keep the faith, brother………GO BRONCOS!!! At least they’re not running the ball down our throats!

  21. chevyman2000 says:

Why do we change from what is working and let the opposing offense just chip away. I dont understand that is coachign we have athletes on D they just never seem to be in the right position. When will get that.

  22. maceano says:

Slowik has no idea what he is doing. It was funny as soon as Griese saw that we lined up in that awful 3-4, he audibled to a run with Dunn who gashed us for 40 yards. Dump the 3-4 and dump Slowik in the nearest lake. I dont think many will mind if we chuck bates in that lake too. That way those two losers can keep eachother company. These guys drag this team down big time!!!

  23. navy_bronco_fan says:

I have to agree……..the 3-4 look is TERRIBLE…………JUST FREAKIN’ TERRIBLE

  24. Cutlerizer says:

I would like to see our Offense hand the ball off on two consecutive plays.

  25. Cutlerizer says:

Hold on to the ball Scheffler!
