Q3 – 15:00: The Broncos continue to hold Joshua Cribbs’ damage on returns to a minimum. Josh Barrett and Darrell Reid drag him down after a 19-yard return. The Browns will start at their own 23-yard line.
Q3 – 13:34: The Broncos defense puts the Browns in an early hole. The pocket collapses on Brady Quinn on first down and Elvis Dumervil picks up a 2-yard sack. After a stop on the run by Ryan McBean on second down, Cribbs makes the catch on third down. He headed upfield, but Dumervil punched the ball loose. Brian Dawkins recovers the fumble, and the Broncos have excellent field position, starting the half at the Browns 37-yard line.
Q3 – 12:19: A false start penalty on Daniel Graham backs the Broncos up five yards. Out of the pocket, Orton erases the penalty, finding Brandon Marshall for a six-yard gain. With Moreno as the lone setback, Orton dupes the defense with an end around to Marshall for 14 yards and a first down.
Q3 – 10:43: After no gain by Moreno on first down and a short gain by Graham in the flat, Orton and the offense faces third and 7 at the edge of the red zone. With three receivers and Moreno in the backfield, Orton found Stokley open on a crossing route. Reliable with five catches in the first half, Stokley dropped the pass, setting up fourth down.
Q3 – 10:39: Prater moves on from his first-half miss, connecting from 38 yards out to extend the Broncos’ lead. Broncos 13, Browns 6
Q3 – 10:35: Taking the kickoff from the edge of the goal line, Cribbs runs out of room quickly, as Darrell Reid grabs him by the ankles. The Browns will start their second-half offense at their own 20-yard line.
Q3 – 10:03: The crowd noises picks up, but it doesn’t upset Quinn and the offense. Braylon Edwards hurdles high over Champ Bailey, picking up 23 yards on first down.
Q3 – 8:25: The combination of Wesley Woodyard and Brian Dawkins makes stops on two runs, placing the Browns in a 3rd and 4 from midfield. Mike Furrey got separation from Dawkins over the middle of the field, but the ball went off his fingertips.
Q3 – 8:16: Dave Zastudil executes a high hanging punt, and rookie Alphonso Smith signals for the fair catch at his own 12-yard line. That’s where the Broncos will take over.
Q3 – 7:14: After a short gain by Correll Buckhalter on first down, Knowshon Moreno takes the carry off left tackle. Shaun Rogers’ face-mask penalty turns a 3-yard gain into an 18-yard gain, giving the Broncos a first down at their own 32-yard line.
Q3 – 6:15: Out of the shotgun, Orton finds Moreno for his first reception of the game – 11 yards and another Broncos first down. Moreno keeps his legs churning, taking the next carry for two yards before Buckhalter comes back in the game. Moreno has 43 all-purpose yards at this point.
Q3 – 4:30: Flushed out of the pocket on a 3rd and 6, Orton finds Marshall for his longest reception of the game. The catch goes for 25 yards, and propels the Broncos into Browns territory at the 28-yard line.
Q3 – 3:17: After a short gain by Moreno, Orton is forced to scramble again and throw the ball away. With third and long from the 27-yard line, Orton completes to Jabar Gaffney. He makes an inside move to try and reach the chains, but he is a yard short of the marker.
Q3 – 2:49: Prater’s fourth field goal attempt of the game, a 37-yard try, sails wide left. He missed one in the same direction late in the first half. The Browns take over at their own 27-yard line, trailing 13-6.
Q3 – 1:18: With pressure from Andre’ Goodman on a cornerback blitz, Quinn finds Braylon Edwards for 16 yards and a first down. Quinn goes right back to Edwards on the next play, finding him for 13 yards. The ball popped loose, but he was ruled down by contact. Edwards leads the Browns with six catches for 92 yards on the afternoon.
Q3 – 1:03: The Broncos defense forces three straight incompletions from Quinn, capped by a pass breakup from Dumervil on third down. Too far out of field goal range, Zastudil’s punt is returned by Alphonso Smith out to the 18-yard line. The 10-yard return sets the Broncos up at that spot.
Q3 – 0:00: After being met head on by Eric Barton on first down for no gain, Orton went back to Moreno on a swing pass out of the backfield. He picks up his second 11-yard catch of the game, closing out the third quarter with a first down. The Broncos will start the fourth quarter at their own 29-yard line.
FOURTH QUARTER
Q4 – 13:50: After a short gain by Buckhalter on the ground, Orton went back to him on a perfectly-executed screen pass. After solid blocks by Chris Kuper and Casey Wiegmann, the play was called back via a holding call on Brandon Marshall. The Broncos re-start with 1st and 10 on their own 47-line, after a 15 yard gain with the penalty.
Q4 – 12:22: Orton continues to find his rhythm, finding Gaffney on an out route. The veteran makes an inside move on Browns CB Brandon McDonald, barreling down to the Browns’ 2-yard line. The 49-yard pass play sets up 1st and goal from that spot, and the Broncos use their first timeout of the half.
Q4 – 12:18: With Russ Hochstein lined up as a fullback, Peyton Hillis follows him into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown run. Prater tacks on the extra point, extending the Broncos’ lead to two touchdowns. Broncos 20, Browns 6
Q4 – 12:17: Joshua Cribbs is again neutralized by Prater on the kickoff, taking a knee three yards deep in the end zone. Cleveland will start from its own 20-yard line.
Q4 – 10:24: The Browns were no match for the Broncos on this drive. Andra Davis started off the stand, stopping Harrison for his team-leading eighth tackle of the game. That flustered the Browns’ line into a false start on the ensuing play, setting up second and long. Dumervil backed the Browns into an even bigger hole, picking up his second sack of the half for nine yards. Facing 3rd and 22 from their own 8-yard line, Dumervil was at it again with another sack, pinning the Browns at their own 2-yard line on the punt.
Q4 – 9:55: Smith had running room on the return, but a holding penalty by Jarvis Moss backs the Broncos up to their own 33-yard line. That’s where they’ll take over.
Q4 – 8:24: Holding a commanding lead, the Broncos turned to the ground game. Moreno picked up five yards on first down. He got stronger on second down, turning in his longest carry of the game. The 17-yard sprint moved the Broncos into Browns territory, with a first down at the 45-yard line. Cleveland’s defense looked exasperated on the ensuing play and before they could blink, another score was on the board. Buckhalter broke by an army of defenders, barreling into the end zone for the 45-yard touchdown run. Prater’s extra point is good. Broncos 27, Browns 6
Q4 – 8:22: Cribbs was left stranded on the kickoff again, with Prater’s boot sailing deep into the end zone. The touchback has the Browns starting at their own 20-yard line.
Q4 – 6:52: Quinn finds Cribbs on a pair of short routes, setting up third and inches. The pocket quickly collapsed on Quinn and Dumervil was the reason. His fourth sack of the game marks a new career high for the fourth-year outside linebacker, and ties a franchise record set by Simon Fletcher against the Chargers on Nov. 11, 1990. Zastudil’s punt is returned by Smith to his own 30-yard line. The Broncos take over from that spot.
Q4 – 5:32: Holding a three-touchdown advantage, Orton puts the ball in the hands of Moreno. He takes picks up 19 yards on the first two carries, setting up another first down near midfield.
Q4 – 3:40: LaMont Jordan gets in on the rushing act, picking up three yards on his first carry and five on the next to set up third and short. Jordan keeps the chains moving, going off a Ryan Clady block for four yards and another first down.
Q4 – 2:00: With the crowd starting a wave of approval, Jordan powers ahead on another two carries, setting up 3rd and 4 from the 33-yard line. Orton milks the clock down to the two-minute warning.
Q4 – 1:47: Going off right tackle, Jordan is stopped short of the marker. The Browns burn their first timeout, with the Broncos facing 4th and 3 from the 32-yard line. Jordan is stopped short on the fourth down by McDonald, and the Browns take over on downs at their own 32-yard line.
Q4 – 0:42: In hurry-up mode, Quinn completes to Harrison on first down for nine yards. Facing 2nd and short, Quinn finds a wide open Robert Royal for his first catch of the game. The 13-yard reception sets up a first down in Broncos’ territory.
Q4 – 0:27:After an incompletion, Quinn takes a deep shot to the end zone for Mohamed Massaquoi, but the ball flies out of the end zone. Facing third and long from the 46-yard line, Quinn finds a crossing Harrison who scurries out of bounds for a 15-yard gain and a first down.
Q4 – 0:27: A pair of incomplete passes intended for Royal sets up 3rd and long. A tipped pass intended for Cribbs lands in the hands of Darcel McBath for the interception. The Broncos kneel out the clock, and move to 2-0 on the season. Thanks for following our blog, and keep checking DenverBroncos.com this evening for full coverage of the victory.FINAL: Broncos 27, Browns 6

ok im glad ortons stats arnt bad. so he only has 2 touchdowns but hes 9th in yards and unlike cutler he has NO picks i mean im not here sayin ortons better than cutler or hes the next john elway but hes a good enough qb to win games. he lead his team to a 9-7 season last year without hester bein the amazing returner he was and had no receivers except our 5th string receiver branden lloyd.
So make up your mind. Last week a lot of you were down on Orton for holding onto the ball too long and getting sacked. Now you say he sucks because he was only 19 for 37 because he threw the ball away when a sack was imminent. Also, how many hot reads did hiss receivers miss? BUNCHES!!!
A good win over a very pathetic team.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
Kicking coverage: A+ Cribbs was a lotal non factor.
Kicking receiving: C Still haven’t found a threat to break one. Hillis, blleehh!!!
Punting coverage: A+ Great coverage. Cribbs didn’t do squat.
Punting receiving: C Still no reliable return man.
OFFENSE:
QB: B- While Orton was no Fran Tarkington, he looked good in his pocket movement. A ot of hurried paaaes made his com[pletion percentage low. Lot of miscommunication. Some his fault, so the receivers fault.
RB: B- Some great long plays, but way to many 2nd and 8 or 9.
WR: C- Drops, missed hot reads, but some excellent YAC.
OL: C+ Had a great deal of trouble handling the Browns blitz packages for quite some time. A few unnecessary penalties.
DEFENSE:
DL: B Excellent run protection. Didn’t generate much of a pass rush by themselves.
LB: A- Great game for Doomerville. Others did excellent job also. MIssed some pass coverage over the middle.
SECONDARY: A+ Three turnovers!!!!!
I watched some of KC/Raider game. Two pathetic teams. How does KC control the ball 39 minutes, have the opposing QB 7 for 24 and still lose?
Raiders have a very good defense, but their offense of pathetic! I’m sure glad that Davis cut Garcia. The Raiders don’t have a QB on their squad that would make even an adequate back up.
Nice Team Win. Hopefully, our offense will awaken now that they have scored. Orton played another game without a turnover. I still think he is the reason the offense sputters. We have far too much talent on the offensive side of the ball for the production we get. Maybe these two wins will help build confidence.
Gotta love the improvement of the D-FENCE. Dumerville was really impressive.
Let’s get ready for Raiders week. Time to go to the blackhole and kick some ass.
GO BRONCOS!!!!
Is there any coverage of Shannon Sharpes speech during halftime induction to the Ring of Fame?
In regards to my previous post, What I meant about scoring, was this offense must be feeling a lot of pressure, new scheme and high expectations. First game, the offense looked pathetic and stale. Hopefully the more they taste success, the better they play. McDaniels can figure out what his QB and the rest of the offense is really good at.
Enjoy this win, the Broncos have already silenced the critics, I remember everyone saying they would start the season 0-4. One more win against the raiders on the road, then back-to-back home games against Dallas then the Patriots. I feel this team is capable of winning all 5 games going into the bye week. Just need our defense to keep up the good work, they are getting ready to go up against some big offensive lines. The Patriots are suspect, just cannot let them hang around.
HOW CAN PEOPLE STILL BE BAD MOUTHING ORTON AND OUR TEAM?????? Orton played an excellent game today. I don’t know how anyone can think he cant throw the long ball. He had so many long throws, he got in and out of the pocket, he escaped sacks, he played AMAZING!!! I want to tell everyone something, if you keep bad mouthing this team and expecting them to do bad, then they are eventually going to play that way!!! Support this team and what they represent or find another site to blog on!!!
ORTON HAS NOT TURNED THE BALL OVER IN TWO GAMES!!! THAT’S GREAT!!!! STOP BASHING HIM!!! HE PLAYED AN AMAZING GAME YESTERDAY!!! HE IS RANKED #11 RIGHT NOW ON THE TOP QUARTERBACKS. HE IS RIGHT BELOW SANCHEZ IS 10 AND MANNING IS 9!!! ORTON IS ONE OF ONLY 5 QUARTERBACKS THAT HAVE NOT THREW AN INTERCEPTION!!! I LOVE THIS GUY AND WHAT HE IS DOING FOR OUR TEAM!! HE IS PLAYING HIS HEART OUT FOR THIS TEAM EVEN CONSIDERING THE SO-CALLED FANS WHO ARE BASHING HIM!!!
I HAVE COMPLETE FAITH IN ORTON!!
FOR HIS STATS THE LAST TWO GAMES GO TO:http://www.nfl.com/stats/categorystats?tabSeq=0&statisticCategory=PASSING
ORTON’S QUARTERBACK RATING IS 90.9 WHICH IS AMAZING!!! IF YOU ARE UNSURE ON IF THAT IS GOOD OR NOT HE HAS A BETTER RATING THAN CUTLER, ROMO, RIVERS, RODGERS, AND THE SUPERBOWL WINNING QB ROETHLISBERGER!!!
I HAVE COMPLETE FAITH IN MY BRONCOS!!!
broncosfreak30, i agree. People need to stop bashing Orton. He’s been doing really good.
Also, if people are wanting throws like Cutler did, remember that while that strong arm was good, it also made him reckless, and he threw a lot of interceptions.
First and foremost, Orton has done everything to help the team win. When he throws the ball away that’s what coaches want. Don’t turn the ball over. Everyone is getting upset because Orton isn’t “forcing” the ball in there like Cutler would try to do. Then if Orton did try to force it in there, then everyone would be bashing him for turning the ball over. Everyone that is bashing Orton, is still butt hurt about the Cutler deal.
I’m very proud of the total team effort yesterday cause that’s what it takes to win football games. Altough these were wins against “not so great” teams, they were wins non the less and shows the character of this team. Ususally games against these types of teams are the ones that get away from you.
This offense is still a work in progress, and you could def. see a drastic improvement from week 1. I hope that trend continues cause the tougher games are yet to come. The more I watch Orton, the more comfortable I am seeing him out there behind center. Seems like Marshall is getting more involved as well, which can only help our team. Nice to see the running game chewing up some yard too.
And what can be said about the D? These guys have gelled right away and are not consistantly giving up those dreaded third down conversions I’ve been so accustomed to seeing year after year. Let’s hope they keep it up and keep pressuring the QB.
Faders dont’ stand a chance against this team as it’s looking now. JR is gonna get sacked over and over and over again. Then we’ll watch the real tests begin for this team. Dallas, Pats, Chargers, and Ravens…….Should be some great football!
Keep up the great work boys! GO BRONCOS!
Wow. That was a great perfomance by our D and hats off to DOOM for a terrific game. Orton has done more than I ever expected, no INT’s. How many other teams can say that about their starting QB? Looks like we will be a force in the AFC this year.
GO BRONCOS
broncosfreak30… We have played the worst two pass/run defense teams in the league. Im not taking anythng away from the win, Our D has really stepped up, but Orton is not going to be the answer when were going to have to have a qb shoot out on our brutal 8 game stretch. He cant throw with out a finger injury much less with one. I just dont think he is the answer still… Go Broncs
AWESOME TEAM WIN!
First of all, Congratulations to Head Coach JMac on your first home opener as our head dude! You continue to show your experience in setting forth a great game plan and well coached team. Nice job today coach!
Congratulations to Mike Nolan for producing and coaching a very talented, disciplined and hungry defense. Nice job coach! glad you’re on our team!
2009 Broncos, EXCELLENT disply of hunger and desire to win today! Most of us realize what you are trying to accomplish! keep up the great effort and energy!
….it’s now on to the ceptic tank of the NFL. Get the win and get out, I’d hate for any part of that organization to rub off on our warriors!
HERE’S A DIET PEPSI TOAST TO VICTORY MONDAY! GOLLY IT’S GREAT TO BE A BRONCO FAN!!!
GO GET EM’ BOYS!
That’s was a great game, especially in the 2nd half.
I am little disappointed to read so many comments about how bad Orton is. I guess I’m watching a different game. Yes, there were a few bad throws, but I also saw quite a few dropped passes. How about that one that Stokely dropped in the red zone??? You can’t blame that one on Orton. The ball went right through Stokely’s hands.
Honestly, I don’t know what you guys are expecting. A win is a win is a win, I don’t care who they’ve played. And technically, beating Cinci was a GREAT win, especially since Cinci not only put up 31 points in Green Bay yesterday (validates our defense holding them to 7 last week), but they WON! This is the same GB team that beat Cutler last week, right? Come on….give the Broncs some credit. They’re not as bad as everyone seems to think.
Back on the Orton thing. I’m really getting pretty tired of the “franchise QB” BS. Look back at Super Bowl history. How many teams have won the SB without a franchise QB. Tons of them! Hell, the Broncs have lost some Super Bowls to them! Phil Simms, Doug Williams….are those franchise QBs??? What about Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson, Mark Rypien?? They’ve WON Super Bowls. Are you surprised??? Look at all the teams that have franchise QBs now. Phillip Rivers, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, even Jay Cutler… What kind of playoff/Super Bowl success have they had?? Exactly. None. It takes more than a franchise QB to win a Super Bowl. In fact, more teams have had success WITHOUT a franchise QB than with. You win playoff games with a great running game and defense. You don’t with just a franchise QB. Go ask Dan Marino, John Elway and Fran Tarkenton. They’ll tell ya.
DOOOOOOOOOM!!!! Outstanding football today D!!! Stick together and Stay together and the offense will take care of itself. If the opponent can’t score, we’ll always have a chance and that’s what wins games!! 4 sacks in one game, OFF-THE-CHAIN!!
a great home opener for our Broncos, we got the total package this week, offense with 27pts on the board and D which only allowed 6 points. Orton definitely stepped up his game and is starting to look comfortable, a good sign at week 2 with a 2-0 record. While a victory over the Browns is not so notable, Cinci played a great game this week making our victory last week look much better. Now we face the Raiders who are looking much better than last year and should be a bit of a challenge (we’ll squash them like we always do). We have a tough schedule ahead of us but if we keep showing improvement like this we will own the division.
.
As for the folks complaining about Orton bashing, get over it, this is football, we respect him when he plays well and bash him when he doesn’t just like any other player so rub some dirt in it and shake it off
GO BRONCOS
haha, that’s what was funny!! Doom had 4 sacks and we had a team total of 7 sacks. We also didn’t have any sacks on us!! Orton moved very well and escaped the rushers several times!!! BELIEVE IN ORTON!!
I’m liking what I’m seeing on both offense and defense, don’t get me wrong because the offense still has a long way to go to be perfect, but no picks and they scored on a suspect defense. Another good win as this should build confidence. I’m still wondering about B-Marsh’s production though. Gaffney looked good and so did Stokley. I don’t know if they’ll make it to the playoffs this year but I’m sure that they’ll make me proud.
Heck man I’m already proud of them and always will be.
GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those of us who like what we are seeing out of Orton, you people have faith in this team. And I just don’t finish reading comments posted with all of the negative chat about Orton. Because those people don’t have faith in this team, because team means all of the Players,Coaches, and Management. Not just the players that you’d like to see play because some of the other players can’t throw the ball 40+ yards.
That’s just my observation, and you have the right to not finish reading my comment.
I had a lot of fun last week at work because Cutler threw all of those picks, lost the game and Orton didn’t lose the game and had no picks. There is a guy in the office that is a Bears fan and he was just thrilled when McD. traded Cutler to Chicago. I told him that Cutler would throw more picks this year than t.d’s. We beat the Bengals 12-7 and then they turn around and beat the Packers yesterday. Then the Bears turn around and beat the Steelers.
Have A Great Day Broncos Country.
GO Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that overall people dislike Orton. I was at the game and he is not very good. He holds the ball for an amazingly long time, but a lot of that is because the offense is predictable. Most of the game Cleveland didn’t even play a safety deep because they don’t even respect Orton’s arm. they booed Orton a lot because of his decision making. He was not impressive at all. BUT, we are playing good D. and even though Doom had a lot of sacks, we are not very good at rushing the QB. Some of you will disagree because of the sack totals, but the secondary play is fantastic and causes the QB to hold the ball for a very long time. Overall though 2-0 even with KO. We should probably run the ball a whole lot more.
